The Crematorium of the Top Omega Chasing After Alpha - Chapter 21.2
After the inspection concluded, Song Qingpei said, “Ruixue-jie, I don’t think the damage to this mecha is particularly severe. It should be repairable.”
“No rush. It’s getting late today, we’ll continue tomorrow.”
“Alright.”
After discussing it, the two decided that Song Qingpei would try her hand at the repairs the next day.
Song Qingpei was somewhat surprised. “M-me? Am I capable?”
Murong Ruixue smiled. “Even if you don’t believe in yourself, you should trust my judgment.”
Hearing this, Song Qingpei felt a bit embarrassed but replied earnestly, “Thank you, Ruixue-jie. I’ll do my best.”
By the time they left the maintenance room, it was already 9 p.m.
Song Qingpei was startled, she hadn’t realized how quickly time had flown by. She packed her things and prepared to head home.
Murong Ruixue beside her spoke up, “Qingpei, would you like to have dinner together?”
Just as Song Qingpei was about to respond, her smart device rang. She answered it and immediately broke into a wide, radiant smile.
“Mommy, when are you coming home?”
“What’s the matter, sweetie? Missing Mommy?” Song Qingpei chuckled.
“Mhm, I miss you so much. Song Song wants to sleep with Mommy tonight.”
“Ah, I see!”
Song Qingpei glanced apologetically at Murong Ruixue. “I’m really sorry, my daughter is quite clingy. Please don’t mind it.”
“That’s normal for a child. You should head back quickly.”
After exchanging a few more words, Murong Ruixue smiled and left.
Watching her retreating figure, Song Qingpei frowned slightly. She wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but Murong Ruixue had been unusually kind to her lately, leaving her with a vague sense of unease.
It felt somewhat ungrateful to think this way, yet she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
Preoccupied with these thoughts, Song Qingpei returned home to find Ming Yu and Song Song waiting for her in the living room.
As soon as Song Song spotted her, she cheered and rushed into her arms as usual. “Mommy, Mommy~”
“Sweetie, come here for a hug.”
Song Qingpei picked up Song Song with a smile, her peripheral gaze sweeping over Ming Yu, whose expression remained as cold as ever.
She couldn’t help but recall the text message. Of course, she had no intention of inviting a scolding, so she decisively chose to play dumb.
” It’s getting late. I’ll take Song Song to bed now,” she said directly.
Without another glance at Ming Yu, she carried Song Song upstairs.
Ming Yu, completely ignored, seethed with anger, her chest heaving and her face darkening ominously.
She had waited all day, but her message seemed to have vanished into thin air.
Hoping that Song Qingpei might have a surprise for her, she had skipped dinner, finished her work early, and returned home by seven, only to wait until past ten. If she hadn’t urged Song Song to call Song Qingpei, the woman probably wouldn’t have bothered to come back.
And now that she was finally home, she had the audacity to ignore her completely!
Not only did she ignore her, but she didn’t even spare her a single glance!
Gritting her teeth, Ming Yu watched the mother and daughter ascend the stairs. In a fit of rage, she hurled a cushion from the sofa, sending it flying several meters away to lie pitifully on the floor, utterly neglected.
Song Qingpei carried Song Song back to their room, and the two chatted for a while.
Seeing that the little one was still full of energy, she found a picture book for Song Song to look at and then headed into the bathroom for a shower.
Song Qingpei wiped her face, letting the rushing hot water wash away the fatigue of the day.
Unbeknownst to her, the sound of the water masked the knocking at the door.
Song Song hopped off the bed and saw Ming Yu standing outside the door. “Mommy~” she said in her tiny voice.
Ming Yu peeked inside and asked, “Where’s your mom?”
“Mommy’s taking a shower.”
Hearing this, Ming Yu hesitated for a moment before asking, “Is your mom still angry?”
Song Song’s big, dark eyes rolled thoughtfully. “Did you make Mommy angry again?”
“I didn’t.”
Song Song pouted, wearing an expression of disbelief. “You must have done something to upset Mommy again, that’s why she’s mad~”
“It’s not…”
Ming Yu tried to explain, but Song Song tilted her head in confusion. “Why don’t you try to cheer Mommy up?”
At this, Ming Yu sighed helplessly. “I don’t know how.”
“Mommy, you’re so silly,” Song Song said with a serious expression. “Just give her kisses, hugs, and act a little cute that’s all it takes to make Mama happy.”
Ming Yu: “…”
“Come on, you have to cheer Mama up properly.”
As Song Song spoke, the door was pushed open, and Song Qingpei emerged from the bathroom in a bathrobe.
Her snow-white skin appeared even more radiant and fair, her long hair casually cascading down, revealing delicate collarbones. The curves of her chest were faintly visible, evoking a sense of intrigue.
Ming Yu froze for a moment, then quickly averted her gaze.
Song Qingpei was also taken aback, her smile stiffening slightly.
She hadn’t expected Ming Yu to come looking for her and asked in surprise, “What are you doing here? Is something wrong?”
The question stirred a surge of irritation in Ming Yu, but she felt too embarrassed to bring up the matter of the ‘birthday.’ She scrutinized Song Qingpei, her eyes flickering with uncertainty and shifting emotions.
That gaze made Song Qingpei uncomfortable, and she was about to ask Ming Yu to leave.
“Mama!”
Song Song came skipping over, tugging at Song Qingpei’s sleeve and looking up with her little face. “Can you sleep with me tonight?”
Song Qingpei was taken aback. “What?”
Song Song blinked her big eyes. “Can Mommy and Mama both sleep with me?”
It was the first time Song Song had made such a request, but Song Qingpei wasn’t about to agree.
She almost blurted out, “No!”
“Okay,” Ming Yu replied even faster than she did.
“Yay!” Song Song cheered, waving her arms excitedly and bouncing up and down on the spot.
A complex emotion flickered in Song Qingpei’s eyes as she looked at Ming Yu with confusion. Strangely, Ming Yu’s cold, stern expression softened considerably, and she even offered a faint smile.
This made Song Qingpei feel as if she were seeing a ghost had Ming Yu been possessed today?
Before Song Qingpei could correct the situation, Song Song eagerly pulled both of them toward the bed.
“Hurry, hurry! Tonight, I want to sleep with Mama and Mommy~”
Song Song exclaimed excitedly, tugging Ming Yu along while dragging Song Qingpei toward the bed.
Song Qingpei was both amused and exasperated by her daughter’s antics. But seeing the hopeful look on Song Song’s face, she couldn’t bring herself to refuse and allowed herself to be pulled onto the bed.
“Lie down quickly, time for bed!”
Song Song lay in the middle, addressing the two awkwardly seated figures.
Ming Yu glanced at Song Qingpei, then silently turned and lay down on the other side, though her gaze remained fixed on Song Qingpei.
“Mommy, aren’t you going to sleep?”
Noticing her mother hadn’t moved for a while, Song Song opened her watery eyes and looked at Song Qingpei expectantly.
Reluctantly, Song Qingpei ignored Ming Yu’s stare and lay down on the other side, patting Song Song gently. “Alright, Song Song, time to sleep now!”
Song Song nodded obediently and said, “Goodnight, Mama. Goodnight, Mommy.”
“Goodnight.”
With Ming Yu right beside her, Song Qingpei didn’t want to engage with her and reached out to turn off the light.
In the darkness, Song Qingpei’s eyelids twitched incessantly.
Over the past few days, she had been trying hard to restrain herself, avoiding thoughts of the past and deliberately creating distance and coldness, all in the hope of moving on as quickly as possible.
Yet just as she had finally let go, Ming Yu had inexplicably drawn close again.
Her eyes wide open in the dark, Song Qingpei sighed inwardly, feeling nothing but exasperation. It seemed Ming Yu simply couldn’t let anyone think well of her.
Finally, she let out a soft sigh, turned over, and faced away from Ming Yu.
Ming Yu turned her head, her dark eyes quietly fixed on her back, motionless.
She didn’t know why she had agreed to Song Song’s request at that moment, but a faint voice in her heart whispered that she didn’t want the day to end so inexplicably.
The two remained silent, with only the sound of their breaths flowing through the air.
A long, long time passed.
It had been so long that they could hear Song Song’s quiet breathing, confirming she was already asleep.
Song Qingpei, who had been lying with her back to Ming Yu, suddenly sat up and called out softly in the darkness, “Ming Yu?”
Ming Yu didn’t respond, only her breathing grew slightly heavier.
“I know you’re not asleep.”
Unwilling to admit her own awkwardness, Ming Yu deliberately coughed and asked, “What is it?”
What could it be? Song Qingpei raised an eyebrow slightly. “Song Song is asleep. You can go back now.”
“…” Ming Yu didn’t speak. Instead, she abruptly sat up and stared directly at her.
Though the light was dim, having adjusted to the darkness, Song Qingpei could still feel the piercing intensity of that gaze, making her deeply uncomfortable.
She couldn’t help but frown. “It’s late. I need to rest.”
A heavy, drawn-out breath filled the air.
Song Qingpei felt a vague unease and was about to speak when suddenly, a dark figure rose from the bed, pressing straight toward her. It pinned Song Qingpei’s shoulders, trapping her firmly against the edge of the bed. “You, what are you doing?”
Ming Yu leaned in close, suppressing her anger, her words icy. “Song Qingpei, what do you think I’m doing?”
Afraid of waking Song Song, Song Qingpei didn’t struggle. Instead, she flicked on the light with a sharp snap.
The room instantly brightened, and Ming Yu’s delicate, striking features came into Song Qingpei’s view. Her cold eyes blazed with fury.
“Ming Yu, what exactly do you want?” Song Qingpei lowered her voice.
“Song Qingpei, what day is it today? Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten.” Ming Yu spoke through gritted teeth.
At the mention of this, Song Qingpei’s expression immediately turned cold. She let out a mocking laugh and looked at Ming Yu with disdain.
In an instant, Ming Yu’s imposing demeanor faltered. She murmured softly, “In the past, you always.”
“Always what? Celebrated your birthday? Or gave you gifts?”
Song Qingpei was utterly infuriated by her audacity and let out a series of cold laughs. “Ha, what a joke. On my birthday, you gave me a slap. Do you want me to return the favor?”
Ming Yu was left speechless, staring at her in disbelief.
Song Qingpei clenched her teeth. “Let go of me and get out!”
Ming Yu, still in shock, continued to grip her shoulders tightly, momentarily frozen.
Unable to bear it any longer, Song Qingpei raised her hand and slapped Ming Yu’s exquisitely beautiful face.
Smack!
A sharp sound echoed through the room as Ming Yu’s face jerked to the side.
Clutching her right cheek, she stared blankly at Song Qingpei. The anger in her eyes slowly faded, replaced by utter disbelief.
