Long before either of them was born, Shen Youqing and Xue Gu had already been promised to each other in marriage.
Every day, Shen Youqing followed Xue Gu around, calling him “big brother” at every opportunity. Though physically frail and delicate, he was spoiled, arrogant, and difficult to deal with.
Xue Gu hated him.
Seeing Xue Gu avoid him like the plague suited Shen Youqing perfectly. He could follow the original plot while reducing the risk of anyone discovering that he was actually a man.
Everything went according to plan—until the powerful family backing Xue Gu collapsed. Their allies scattered, the court descended into panic, and Xue Gu was exiled to the frontier.
The night before his departure, he blocked Shen Youqing’s path.
A warm, lingering kiss brushed the corner of Shen Youqing’s lips. The usually cold and untouchable childhood friend looked unexpectedly vulnerable as he quietly asked Shen Youqing to wait for him.
The smile on Shen Youqing’s face nearly cracked.

Even after realizing something had clearly gone wrong, Shen Youqing stubbornly continued following the plot.
He sent a letter to the frontier breaking off their engagement and soon found himself with a new fiancé.
According to the typical progression of a Qidian protagonist’s story, the hero would return from hardship stronger than ever, build a harem, rise to power, and crush all his enemies.
As for a minor cannon-fodder character like Shen Youqing, his fate in the original novel was simple:
He would die miserably on the very day Xue Gu ascended the throne.
Three years later, Shen Youqing stood before his childhood friend once again.
The youthful innocence had vanished from Xue Gu’s face. His gaze was cold and dangerous. Rough, warm fingers brushed Shen Youqing’s cheek as he spoke in a gentle voice.
“Liar.”
Meanwhile, Shen Youqing’s system had malfunctioned, making escape impossible for the time being.
“Wait! Let me explain!”
Eventually, Shen Youqing’s cross-dressing secret is exposed.
On the day of his wedding to his replacement fiancé, he seizes the opportunity to fake his death and run away.
Unfortunately, he runs straight into Xue Gu.
Seated on horseback, Xue Gu casually wipes blood from the tip of his blade. Under the moonlight, the polished steel reflects the dark, terrifying expression on his face.
“I’ll give you two choices.”
The blade rests against Shen Youqing’s throat.
“Either you die…”
“Or you come with me.”
