- Chapter 23 - When Delusions Become Real
“Can you come help me? Please… get closer to me, touch…”
The night was heavy and dark, the sky like stagnant water. The Xi residence looked as though it were encased in a massive sheet of thin ice.
Xi Zhaowan lay amidst the damp mist of the bathroom, the orange glow of the lights tracing the sharp outline of her chin.
Zhao Wan, have you truly forgotten who you are? Don’t push things too far!
Twenty minutes ago, a stranger’s text had arrived. The screen emitted a cold, white light in the deep night, making the woman’s eyes grow dark and profound.
She pressed her lips together and didn’t reply. Instead, she issued a command to her subordinates: Continue the acquisition of Zhao Group shares, suppress Zhao enterprises.
The Zhao Group had once belonged to her father. But after his death, her uncle, Zhao Er, had used every means possible to claim that the eldest miss of the Zhao family had also perished alongside her parents in that “incident,” allowing him to take control of the company legitimately.
Xi Zhaowan was only twelve then, sent to a remote orphanage where no one cared for her. It wasn’t until she was sixteen that she met Yan Manxing’s father, Yan Jue. Because she had changed her name, Yan Jue never knew she was the former heiress of the Zhao family.
However, Xi Zhaowan knew that the Yan family had climbed to the top by stepping over the corpse of the Zhao Group. Yet, she didn’t hate the Yans, she only detested her own blood relatives, those who had driven her away and stripped her of her inheritance before her parents’ bodies were even cold.
Though the Yan family had acquired parts of the collapsing Zhao Group years ago, a “starved camel is still bigger than a horse,” and Zhao Er had been desperately keeping the remains afloat.
Out of respect for her parents’ hard work, Xi Zhaowan hadn’t completely annihilated the Zhao Group after becoming the CEO of Yan Group. She hadn’t expected that her mercy would be met with Zhao Er’s ruthless attempt to poison her.
Reflecting on the incident, she deduced that if the poison wasn’t in the wine, it must have been on that bouquet of flowers.
She had been hesitant when she first received the invitation, but because she suspected Zhao Er played a hand in her parents’ deaths, she had entered the tiger’s den to investigate. Fearing the danger of going alone, she had brought Yan Manxing along. Though Manxing was oblivious, her presence as the Chairman of the Yan Group was meant to make the enemy think twice.
She hadn’t expected Yan Manxing to leave halfway through, nor that she herself would be so defenseless.
But her enemies had overlooked the risk of failure. They had been so blinded by the potential rewards of success that they now faced total ruin: a step by step takeover and suppression by Xi Zhaowan’s secret forces.
Zhaowan heartlessly thought: Hah, begging for mercy now? It’s far too late.
Zhao Er had likely forgotten that she was no longer that weak, small child. If they dared to bully her again, she would repay them a hundredfold.
She had analyzed the toxin in her lab, it was RT Toxin, which had extreme solubility. If not for Qing’er, she wasn’t sure she would have survived. Thinking back, she felt a wave of lingering fear followed by a strange sense of luck.
She had dissected the situation countless times, why was Qing’er able to save her? It remained an unsolved mystery. It also became a recurring memory, those two intimate healing sessions felt like a dream, a secret and beautiful bond between them.
No, perhaps it is only a beautiful memory for me. Xi Zhaowan’s brows furrowed. In the Yan residence, her heart which had fluttered upon seeing Yan Qing, sank back into a difficult entanglement.
“Wan’er, if you meet someone you like, you must be brave and fight for them,” her mother’s gentle voice echoed in her mind.
The image of Yan Qing’s cold, elegant face and those clear, pure eyes surfaced again…
Qing’er…
She was clearly her junior. For seventeen years, they had lived so close, yet it felt as though she had never truly seen her.
She lay in the bathtub crafted from pink crystal rock. Amidst the memories, her fingertips condensed with moisture, tracing the silent, subtle recollections of the healing.
Her cheeks flushed crimson. Her red lips murmured Yan Qing’s name, over and over, with deep longing.
“Yan Qing… Qing’er…”
In her imagination, she captured the girl’s icy aura and the cedar-like fragrance. Her thoughts and emotions fell into an unknown, desolate territory.
All her hidden desires were awakened by the girl. Her body, buried in “ice” for over thirty years, felt as though it had just risen from a mine, thawed easily by the girl’s bright gaze and a single lipstick mark.
A strange tide swept over her. By the time she realized it, she had entered an early Heat Phase. This realization flashed briefly through her mind, but her languid, bewitching body no longer had the strength to reach for the suppressants in the bathroom drawer.
She only needed Qing’er. She wanted Qing’er’s scent to fill her, to mark her. Imagining that scent was already beside her, amidst her struggle, she picked up her phone, dialed that familiar number, and made one final, indulgent decision.
Unbeknownst to Xi Zhaowan, within her Dantian, spiritual energy was swirling irregularly during her Foundation Establishment… simultaneously stirring Yan Qing, who had once transferred that energy to her.
Yan Qing sat in meditation, unaware that her every move was being watched or rather, that she was seeing Xi Zhaowan.
At the same time Xi Zhaowan was losing herself in infatuation, Yan Qing was meditating like an old monk. After two sessions of dual cultivation through healing, Yan Qing’s spiritual energy was on the verge of reaching the Golden Light Stage.
During those intimate treatments, she had felt shy, her heart had raced. As dense as she was, she wondered if this was a side effect of the cultivation, making her unable to stop thinking about Xi Zhaowan.
She missed her. She had felt a sense of loss when Xi Zhaowan didn’t come home for several days, though she understood why.
She kept up her habit of practicing cooking, just so she could make Xi Zhaowan’s favorite dishes when she returned.
Day after day, she meditated. In the midst of longing and confusion, her heart dedicated to the path of immortality, was repeatedly tempered. She questioned herself.
During Xi Zhaowan’s absence, while it was a pity they couldn’t continue dual cultivation, Yan Qing thought she had returned to a state of calm, like a still well.
Yet, during her rigorous meditation, that damn image of Xi Zhaowan appeared again in a bathroom, face flushed with shame, whispering softly.
Yan Qing was subconsciously shocked. Why am I seeing Xi Zhaowan in my visions again? It doesn’t look like the previous erotic dreams… Is she suffering from the poison again?
It must be because I think of her during the day that I dream of her during meditation, Yan Qing thought firmly.
What Yan Qing didn’t know was that her spiritual energy had entered Xi Zhaowan and helped her “Innate Spirit Base” body automatically build its foundation. The result: if Xi Zhaowan’s “Sea of Qi” reacted with heat, it would trigger Yan Qing to temporarily enter the Sound Light and Circle Light Stages.
The powers of these stages, the second and third levels after the Golden Light Stage allowed one to see and hear what another person was doing and saying from hundreds or even thousands of miles away, like “Clairvoyance” and “Clairaudience.”
Yan Qing knew none of this.
Treating it as a dream, Yan Qing felt her consciousness drift into the bathroom. Through the mist, she saw what Xi Zhaowan was doing. Her expression changed instantly, and her face turned bright red.
Xi Zhaowan was murmuring “Qing’er” enchantingly, her eyes shimmering like spring water. She lay in the pink crystal tub like a blooming rose. What… what is she doing to herself?
Yan Qing heard her own name being called in soft, private whispers.
“Qing’er… Qing’er… don’t leave me… okay?”
Xi Zhaowan murmured, her lips slightly parted, her eyes hazy like peach blossoms, radiating a charm Yan Qing had never seen before.
She saw the woman open her beautiful eyes, the corners brimming with the moisture of intense emotion.
In Yan Qing’s “dream,” she saw Xi Zhaowan pick up her phone and dial Yan Qing’s number.
Simultaneously, Yan Qing’s actual phone rang. She picked it up, the screen displayed: “Auntie Qinghe.”
Yan Qing nearly jumped out of her meditative state. Her legs, folded in a double-lotus position, almost tumbled off the bed.
The caller: Xi Zhaowan.
How could it be such a coincidence?! She had just seen Xi Zhaowan call her in a vision, and then her phone actually rang.
Fanning her burning face, she answered the phone with a complex expression.
The woman’s voice was exhausted and husky, the tone identical to the one in the vision.
“Qing’er… the poison, it seems to be acting up again. Can you… come help me?”
Ah, she’s poisoned and suffering, yet I was thinking of her like that in my head! I’m so depraved!
Yan Qing didn’t think twice about the request. Filled with a sense of “guilt,” she shook her head violently as if she could shake away the images she had just seen and heard.
Having dreamed of Xi Zhaowan like “this and that” several times, Yan Qing felt like she was becoming a “closet pervert.” What happened to focusing solely on immortality?!
Sister Wan is suffering from toxin right now, and here I am, acting all serious while meditating, but actually imagining her… that way? How could that be possible?!
“Sister Wan! Wait for me, I’m coming right now.” Yan Qing leaped out of bed and swiftly changed into outdoor clothes.
She had to help her.
She didn’t forget to button the top button of her high-end shirt. Fearing the night chill, she skipped the skirt and put on tight jeans. She tied a clever knot at the waist of her cardigan, her long legs moving fast as she knocked on the door to tell the butler to prepare the car for a high-speed trip to Xi Zhaowan’s house.
