- Chapter 18 - Escaping Closeness, The Atmosphere Between Miss Xi and The Young Mistress Is
In the days that followed, the two interacted on the surface as they always had. However, Xi Zhaowan felt an emotion, like a hidden sprout, silently growing in her heart.
She was uncertain, and found it difficult to confirm.
Facing Yan Qing, she felt a simultaneous urge to escape and to draw closer.
True to her promise, Yan Qing began learning how to make breakfast in earnest. While she was quite resistant to handling meat, she picked up pastry making remarkably fast.
Xi Zhaowan had to admit, Yan Qing was incredibly clever. Why hadn’t she noticed this before?
Xi Zhaowan remembered tutoring Yan Qing when she was a child. Because of her own high intelligence, she had felt that little Yan Qing’s ability to absorb knowledge was no different from that of an average child.
Strangely, now that Yan Qing had grown up, she seemed to have become much sharper. Whether it was the level of comprehension she showed with the piano last time or her proficiency in cooking this time, Yan Qing mastered things almost immediately after Xi Zhaowan demonstrated them just once.
During her own student years, Xi Zhaowan had been known as the “genius scholar” of H City. But based on Yan Qing’s recent performance… with such rapid learning ability, it stood to reason she shouldn’t have been at the bottom of the class every time.
“Sister Wan, come and try my Western-style Grape Shortbread.” Yan Qing had grown fond of the feeling of making pastries; she felt fragrant all over, surrounded by the aroma of baked goods.
And since her first finished product was made for Xi Zhaowan, Yan Qing watched her with a sense of anticipation as she tasted it.
Seeing Yan Qing’s bright eyes fixed on her, Xi Zhaowan took a light bite. The soft, buttery fragrance lingered between her teeth, causing her eyes to crinkle into a smile. “It’s delicious. Qing’er, you’re amazing!”
As she spoke, she reached out and rubbed Yan Qing’s head encouragingly.
It was like praising an elementary school student, or perhaps a little kitten wagging its tail.
Yan Qing’s face flushed. This look of anticipation felt a bit familiar.
The roles had reversed. She was like the disciples or grand disciples under her command, having only learned half a move, they would wag their tails and go to her, their Master, seeking praise.
“Do not be arrogant; do not be self-satisfied!” Back then, as the high-ranking Master, she had been cold and stern with her disciples, wishing she could pour a bucket of cold water over them at every turn.
Now, she regretted not praising those disciples more. Because at this moment, being praised by Xi Zhaowan, the sense of satisfaction in her heart was like the cream overflowing from a cake, fluffy and soft.
Seeing the smile in Yan Qing’s eyes, Xi Zhaowan’s lips curled up as well. The two gazed at each other, a sweet, seamless atmosphere lingering around them.
This was the scene Sister Zhou, who was in charge of the Yan family kitchen, witnessed as she passed by.
Sister Zhou happened to be passing the kitchen to grab some cleaning supplies. She respectfully greeted the two once, then twice, but received no response.
There was no need for a third greeting, as Sister Zhou realized she was merely a redundant obstacle.
Both seemed completely oblivious to her presence, treating her as if she were invisible. But that was fine; as a servant, her presence in the Yan household had never been high anyway.
Sister Zhou felt perfectly at ease with that.
However, the atmosphere between Miss Xi and the Young Mistress was… a bit subtle. It seemed that ever since Miss Xi returned from her trip, she and the Young Mistress had been getting closer and closer.
In her memory, ever since the Young Mistress started high school, Miss Xi had moved to her own villa and rarely returned to the Yan house, let alone coming over to cook for the Young Mistress or dining with her.
Not to mention that after Miss Xi became President Xi of the Yan Group, her professional life became increasingly busy.
Even before she was this busy back when the Young Mistress was still in middle school, Miss Xi had never been like this. They were talking and laughing, giving and taking, eating together, walking together after meals, and it seemed they had even slept together a few times. It was as if they had returned to the Young Mistress’s childhood.
Although the two shared no blood relation, in the hearts of the Yan family servants, Miss Xi was like an elder to the Young Mistress, and the Young Mistress was always very respectful and polite toward her.
Now, they didn’t look like an aunt and niece, but rather like friends. But even saying “friends” didn’t quite fit, what friends stare into each other’s eyes for several minutes? In her mind, Sister Zhou had already scripted a dozen different dramas.
At this moment, she didn’t dare think too deeply. She only suspected she was being overly sensitive and secretly reminded herself that as a servant, she should mind her own business.
Yan Qing felt embarrassed for a few minutes. But after rubbing her head, Xi Zhaowan continued to look at her with a smile. Not wanting to lose her momentum, Yan Qing steadied herself and met her gaze.
This was the second time Xi Zhaowan had rubbed her head. Initially, she found it difficult to maintain the posture of a junior in front of Xi Zhaowan at times, she even felt that based on her true age, she should be Xi Zhaowan’s elder.
But psychologically speaking, Xi Zhaowan was indeed more mature than her in certain aspects. And physically too, she glanced inadvertently at the other woman’s exquisitely defined curves.
Even though she had marveled at it many times, every time she looked, she wanted to marvel again.
Yan Qing swore that even in the entire Light Spirit Continent, based on her years of experience, she had never seen a woman with a better figure or a more beautiful face than Xi Zhaowan. Every frown and every smile held a captivating charm, and every gesture carried an indescribable elegance.
She had to admit, compared to the original host’s biological mother, Yan Manxing, she preferred being with Xi Zhaowan. The interaction between them was becoming more like that of equals. She could feel that after several deep conversations and the “joint cultivation” in the bathroom, the current Xi Zhaowan no longer viewed her as just a child.
After all, she was a very powerful adult Yan Qing, the standout of the younger generation of the Light Spirit Continent, the Sect Master of the Qingyun Gate, and a cultivation genius.
She really wanted Xi Zhaowan to know that she was even more powerful than she imagined, with enough ability to protect herself and many others.
Enough ability to give her more protection than she could ever dream of.
The premise being… she had to continue practicing, making progress like she did last time, rather than stagnating.
Thinking of this, she felt a mix of joy and worry. The joy was that she had made a breakthrough in her cultivation.
The worry was that for days she had been diligently sitting cross-legged every night, but because this body lacked flexibility, a night of meditation usually resulted in numb, aching legs and a sore back the next day.
And yet! All that persistence and pain wasn’t as effective as taking off her clothes and soaking in a bathtub pressed against Xi Zhaowan.
So, when could they have the next joint cultivation?
And what reason could she use to make Xi Zhaowan agree without it seeming strange?
She couldn’t exactly get the other woman drunk and then carry her to the bathtub or the bed.
What if she woke up halfway? How would she explain herself?
Say: “Hi, Sister Wan, I just wanted you to help me test if this bed… is soft or not?!”
A genius like Xi Zhaowan a genius who might only be slightly less smart than herself believing such words? Not a chance.
At the same time, Yan Qing realized she had become quite fluent in the language of the ABO world. After not speaking in archaic terms for a long time, her internal monologues had become more frequent.
This wasn’t a good sign. Especially when facing Xi Zhaowan, she always had so many thoughts twisting around.
Like a childish brat, Yan Qing thought to herself.
“President Xi, this is an invitation from Hangyu High School,” an assistant said, handing an invitation to Xi Zhaowan. “Should I decline it for you now? After all, your schedule is very busy lately, and there are several cases from Country A discussed by President Yan that need your refinement.”
As in previous years, the assistant was prepared to decline it according to Xi Zhaowan’s habits.
The invitation from Hangyu High School was for an outstanding alumna to return to the school to give a lecture, and Xi Zhaowan was the only one invited.
In other words, it was a solo lecture for her.
Not all students were invited back. On one hand, it was because Xi Zhaowan’s brilliance had left a significant mark on Hangyu.
On the other hand, it was due to the Yan family’s donations to Hangyu High School’s library and other infrastructure.
Most importantly, Xi Zhaowan’s status as a research scientist made Hangyu High School wish they could invite her back every year to give a talk to the students.
In the beginning, Xi Zhaowan had some time to accommodate her alma mater and held one session. Later, as she got busier, she declined several times.
This time, for some reason, she really wanted to go. Qing’er was studying there now; she wanted to see her at school, see how she was doing and how she got along with her classmates.
It was also a good chance to share some easily understandable insights from her field of research with the students.
“No need to push it. Move the other appointments back a bit.” Xi Zhaowan looked up. “I’ll attend according to the time Hangyu provided.”
The assistant’s heart stirred. She felt that President Xi was in a very good mood and seemed to be looking forward to this lecture.
It seemed like just a commonplace invitation, right? No different from the previous ones. There was nothing particularly special about this time.
The assistant nodded in agreement and suppressed her confusion as she closed the door.
