- Chapter 58 - The Message Talisman
Qi Xianqing’s voice wasn’t loud, yet it exploded above Yan Jue’s head like sudden thunder.
Yan Jue’s eyes widened instantly. Her three fluffy tails, previously waving about in agitation, snapped stiff in place.
Who? Chu Fu?
Qi Xianqing lay slumped over the table, murmuring, “That day in the cave, she stood guard for me while I cultivated… but only dual cultivation partners do that for each other. I thought she liked me…”
“But she seems to have no idea.”
Yan Jue: “…”
“And I was so badly injured that day, yet she didn’t ask about my wounds at all. After we returned to the mountain, she didn’t even contact me. What does she mean by that?”
Qi Xianqing’s voice dropped very low.
The candle flame on the desk flickered, illuminating the girl’s snowy-white face tinged with a faint blush.
Exquisite and enticing.
Qi Xianqing frowned slightly. “Could it be… she’s the type who plays with people’s hearts?”
Thump.
Yan Jue’s heart began pounding wildly. She tucked her face down, curling into a little ball of fox fluff, burning from head to toe thank the heavens her thick fur hid everything.
Ba-dump… ba-dump…
“Back at the beginning, she came every day just to provoke me. I found her quite annoying. But I don’t know when it started… she suddenly became like a different person.”
“I could sense something in her… something that attracted me.”
The night was quiet, the faint chirping of insects drifting through the window.
Qi Xianqing: “It’s strange. She’s a woman, and I can’t possibly like a woman. There has never been a precedent for two women dual cultivating.”
And even if there was, she had always focused single-mindedly on cultivation and never learned about such things.
Qi Xianqing: “…Maybe that junior sister is simply special. That’s why I feel differently about her compared to the others.”
The little fox lowered her head, her whole body itching with discomfort.
Although, well..
What kind of peak straight girl declaration was that?!
She said so much and still concluded her feelings were “senior sister likes junior sister”?! That’s not it at all!
Yan Jue’s mind was a mess of fireworks.
Qi Xianqing’s soft breath brushed through her fur now and then, making her belly itch again.
Not just the fleas from Su Yang Immortal Mansion Qi Xianqing herself was scaring her to death.
Yan Jue lifted her hind leg and scratched her belly desperately. Soon the whole quiet room was filled with tap tap tap tap scratching sounds.
Qi Xianqing suddenly noticed. “What’s wrong? You’ve been scratching since the moment I saw you today.”
Yan Jue: “…”
Isn’t it because YOU scared me?
Qi Xianqing reached out to touch her belly, and Yan Jue instantly froze, instinctively trying to pull away.
Qi Xianqing: “Don’t move. It’s fine.”
She held the fox’s two soft paws, flipped her over easily, and Yan Jue found herself lying helplessly on her back, belly exposed her fox body’s most vulnerable spot.
She had no choice but to surrender to Qi Xianqing’s tyranny, turning her face away with a vigilant stare.
Qi Xianqing parted her fur and frowned. “Wait here.”
Qi Xianqing rose and walked toward her storage chest, crouching to search for something.
Yan Jue lay on the floor, forcing her racing heartbeat to calm, sneaking a sideways glance.
Qi Xianqing returned holding the immortal sword, Candle-Shadow.
In the dim light, the blade slid from its sheath, revealing a shimmering blue-green surface.
Yan Jue: “?!”
She froze, pressing flat against the floor, staring at Qi Xianqing with wide amber fox eyes.
Qi Xianqing crouched before her. The sword’s glow flashed faintly as she carefully scraped the fur around Yan Jue’s belly.
It was a sword capable of killing, yet in Qi Xianqing’s hands it held no aggression at all the blade moved with dexterous precision.
She was… shaving her.
Red fox fur drifted down in tufts.
Yan Jue was emotionally collapsing terrified, comfortable, nervous all at once.
She struggled a bit, but Qi Xianqing gently patted her chest, soothing her. Yan Jue closed her eyes and kicked her legs involuntarily as a cool sensation spread across her abdomen.
The North Sea Black Iron ring around her neck tightly suppressed all her demonic energy, which was why even Candle Shadow failed to notice anything.
Qi Xianqing examined the exposed skin. “Look, you scratched yourself raw.”
Beneath the red fur, her fox skin was snowy white, with several clear claw marks bleeding slightly.
Qi Xianqing took out several small boxes from her qiankun pouch, choosing one made of yellow wood.
She opened it and carefully scooped out some ointment, applying it to the wounds bit by bit.
Yan Jue clenched her teeth, resting her chin against Qi Xianqing’s shoulder.
“Where did you go and catch a skin disease? Stay like this for a few days.”
The moment Qi Xianqing released her, Yan Jue rolled upright with a thump.
Qi Xianqing patted her head. “No licking.”
The excruciating itch that had tormented her belly was already fading, replaced by a soothing coolness.
Yan Jue lowered her head, too embarrassed to look at her.
Yan Jue didn’t return to human form after leaving Qi Xianqing’s place.
She remained a fox, sitting on the bed in a daze.
According to the plot, the Five Dragon Summit was approaching.
In two months, Qi Xianqing would pierce her chest with a sword.
Leaving the mountain now would be the safest.
But…
If standing guard for the other was truly a sign of affection, then in Qi Xianqing’s eyes, she had clearly shown goodwill but afterward vanished without a word.
That really was a bit… scummy.
So annoying.
Yan Jue rolled around on the bed. Her freshly treated belly felt cool.
Even if Qi Xianqing did like her, that feeling existed only because she appeared human.
If Qi Xianqing found out she was a demon… would she still feel that way?
She’d probably skewer the little fox demon with one strike…
The sky darkened.
Wind whipped violently along the mountain path, bending the bamboo on both sides.
Yan Jue carried her qiankun bag and the uniform iron sword of outer sect disciples, descending the mountain with heavy thoughts.
The wind grew fiercer.
Maybe it was the weather, but a faint unease crept into her heart.
Soon she reached the foot of Five-Dragon Mountain.
A barrier still shimmered there, just like before.
A faint golden sheen glimmered at the mountain gate this was the barrier that had blocked her a year ago.
Yan Jue narrowed her eyes, stepped forward, and closed them as she passed through.
This time, the barrier did not stop her.
Her heart leaped but the moment she crossed it, a sudden pain stabbed her chest.
Yan Jue halted instantly.
Agonizing pain surged through her, threatening to swallow her whole.
No.
She clutched her chest tightly.
No… this pain again.
Cold sweat slid down her cheek. She staggered forward a few steps, gripping a railing.
No good.
Every step worsened the pain. After three steps, her strength failed her and she collapsed to her knees.
Her vision blurred.
The clouds thickened overhead, wind howling through her ears.
She fell into the soft grass, eyes opening and closing.
She had considered this possibility.
She couldn’t escape.
Heaven wouldn’t let her leave.
Though nothing in this world seemed to visibly restrain her, the moment she interfered with the male and female leads’ relationship, Heaven punished her.
The heroine liked the hero because he would grow strong.
Yan Jue, the fox demon, was a necessary stepping stone for that growth.
Without her yin essence, the male lead wouldn’t shine at the Five Dragon Summit and wouldn’t attract Qi Xianqing’s admiration.
Yan Jue used all her strength to crawl back. Only after re-entering the mountain did the pain gradually ease.
The wind roared, clouds gathered, bamboo swayed wildly.
It was going to rain.
Yan Jue stood slowly and walked back uphill, frowning as she thought through countermeasures.
She wasn’t panicked she had expected this outcome and came only to confirm it.
Maybe encountering the male lead was unavoidable.
If she wanted to escape, she had to confront him first.
The world was beautiful she didn’t want to die.
And she wouldn’t sit and wait for death.
The one who killed her was not the male lead. It was Qi Xianqing.
Yan Jue walked on. The drizzle had already begun, unnoticed.
In the bamboo forest, Qi Xianqing stood with her hands behind her back.
Her mid-fusion cultivation was already terrifying, and she advanced using Red Lotus Karma Fire, making her strength even more formidable.
Candle Shadow darted through the air like a dragon.
Blue-green sword energy rippled outward like water. A single light touch against a bamboo leaf.
The entire stalk split cleanly in the next breath.
Qi Xianqing: “Not bad. You’ve improved.”
Candle Shadow twirled joyfully, proud of herself.
Her master always said the strength of a sword wasn’t measured by its explosive power but by the depth of its inner force.
Candle-Shadow wanted to be a great sword! She trained diligently every day!
Suddenly, Candle Shadow sensed something.
Far along the mountain path, a slim figure walked slowly familiar.
Candle Shadow paused for half a breath before letting out a delighted chime and shooting forward.
Qi Xianqing blinked. “You..”
Before she could finish speaking, the sword was already gone.
Qi Xianqing saw the figure too and froze.
Yan Jue…
Yan Jue was climbing the path when something flew to her, blocking her way and rubbing happily against her shoulder.
Candle Shadow.
She froze, stepping back, but the sword followed, cold blade pressing lightly against her back.
Rub rub.
“Why is Junior Sister here?” a familiar voice sounded behind her.
Yan Jue spun around and stared straight into Qi Xianqing’s clear, water like gaze.
Qi Xianqing approached in a snow white long dress, hem fluttering in the wind.
Yan Jue’s heart lurched painfully, then raced uncontrollably.
She forced a stiff smile, face burning red. “Why are you here?”
Qi Xianqing’s expression held no readable emotion. “Few people use this lower mountain path. I come here occasionally to practice sword techniques.”
Yan Jue: “Oh.”
For some reason, Qi Xianqing felt Yan Jue seemed… deflated.
Rain fell, yet Yan Jue didn’t even open a protective shield.
Her light colored robe clung to her, black hair soaked and sticking to her forehead like a wounded little animal.
Qi Xianqing frowned. “What’s wrong?”
Her voice was unexpectedly stern.
Yan Jue flinched, lips tightening. “Nothing.”
Why was she suddenly so serious? Scaring her like that?
Qi Xianqing: “Did someone bully you?”
Yan Jue: “…”
You did! YOU bullied me!
Qi Xianqing simply looked at her as if no matter how long Yan Jue took to gather her thoughts, she was willing to wait.
Where did she get such patience?
Yan Jue swallowed, staring at her for a long moment. “Senior Sister, I was just thinking.”
Qi Xianqing paused.
Yan Jue stepped back slightly. “I was just thinking… this world is so cruel. No matter how strong you are, someone stronger will always exist.”
She lifted her eyes. “Have you ever been afraid… that someday, someone stronger than you might kill you?”
Her voice was serious, almost solemn.
Qi Xianqing’s brows furrowed slightly.
Yan Jue wasn’t really asking. She was speaking to herself voicing her own fear. Fear of dying for inexplicable reasons. Fear of dying by Qi Xianqing’s sword simply because she was a demon, or because of the male lead.
She hadn’t seduced the male lead, hadn’t harmed anyone.
Suddenly, something pressed on her head.
Yan Jue blinked and looked up.
Qi Xianqing had placed her palm gently on her head, rubbing lightly like calming a small animal.
Qi Xianqing hesitated, then said softly, “You don’t need to worry about such things.”
Yan Jue: “Of course Senior Sister wouldn’t worry. You’re strong.”
Qi Xianqing met her gaze and froze.
For a moment, she sensed Yan Jue had a secret. Something she couldn’t say. Something tied to her life.
Qi Xianqing felt she was just one step away from a truth.
“But I’m different. I’m weak…” Yan Jue began, but her next words caught in her throat.
Qi Xianqing had handed her a talisman plate.
Carved from jade, intricate inscriptions etched into it.
Yan Jue recognized it.
A message talisman used for simple long distance communication when crushed.
She had used one to summon Xue Shuangxing in Suyang Immortal Mansion.
“Junior Sister.” Qi Xianqing’s voice pulled her back.
Her peach blossom eyes lowered gently. “You saved my life. I don’t know how to repay you.”
Yan Jue blinked.
Qi Xianqing continued, “If you ever encounter danger or someone tries to kill you crush this talisman.”
“No matter where I am, I will come to your side immediately.”
The rain fell harder and harder. Her gaze was steady and soft.
Yan Jue held the talisman wanting to laugh, wanting to cry, feeling something warm and indescribable swelling in her chest.
She looked up and met Qi Xianqing’s startled eyes.
After holding back for a long moment, Yan Jue finally murmured, half crying, half laughing
“…Thank you, Senior Sister.”
