- Chapter 6 - Listening to Only Half the Sentence
Why did she only listen to half the sentence today?
Long after Chi Li had agreed to Mu Zhi’s request, she had spoken with Mu Zhi’s mother about the girl’s aspirations.
Although the Mu family had only one daughter, Mu’s mother had no intention of stopping her when she learned Mu Zhi wanted to cultivate immortality. However, as a worried mother, she held Chi Li’s hand and gave her a heartfelt plea.
“Zhi’er has been the apple of my eye since she was a child. She wants to cultivate, how could I, as her mother, bear to say no?”
“She may be a bit willful, but her heart is pure and kind.”
“I won’t be by her side, so I hope the Immortal Master will be patient with her.”
When speaking of Mu Zhi, the formidable head of the Mu household softened, her eyes filled with maternal love. Every word carried the weight of a mother’s anxiety over her daughter leaving home.
Chi Li accepted each request. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of the girl in bright clothing outside the window.
The flowers blooming in the manor were far less vibrant than the girl’s smile when she looked over.
Chi Li was in no rush to leave the Mu estate. Instead, she stayed for several days, waiting for a time similar to her previous life before finally bidding farewell to Mu’s mother alongside Mu Zhi.
At the time of departure, Mu’s mother held Mu Zhi’s hand and nagged for quite a while. Chi Li showed no impatience, waiting calmly by their side.
After helping Mu Zhi onto the carriage, Chi Li said to her mother:
“You can rest assured. I will take good care of her.”
As Chi Li prepared to board the carriage, she heard Mu’s mother speak behind her.
“Immortal Master, my Zhi’er truly likes you.”
“If you have no such intentions, please do not let her be too heartbroken.”
Chi Li paused mid-motion. Before she could process the meaning of those words, Mu Zhi pulled her into the carriage. Mu Zhi avoided her gaze, lifting the curtain to shout back to her mother.
“Mother, stop talking nonsense!”
As the carriage pulled away, Mu’s mother stood before the Mu manor with a gentle gaze, watching them until they disappeared from sight.
Normally, Chi Li would have chosen to fly Mu Zhi directly back to the Cangqing Sect on her sword. However, she had changed her mind and asked Mu’s mother to prepare a carriage instead.
When they arrived at the foot of the mountain where the Cangqing Sect was located, she chose to lead Mu Zhi up the mountain on foot.
Mu Zhi did not complain at all in fact, she was joyful and excited throughout the journey.
Knowing the climb was long, Chi Li who didn’t need to eat, thoughtfully prepared many of Mu Zhi’s favorite snacks.
Mu Zhi didn’t know why Chi Li understood her tastes so well, eventually chalking it up to the “divine powers” of cultivators.
Occasionally, disciples returning to the sect would fly past on their swords. Upon seeing Chi Li, they would bow respectfully and call out, “Eldest Martial Sister.”
Only after Chi Li nodded in acknowledgment would the disciples fly away.
Mu Zhi stared at the swords beneath their feet, then tilted her head to look at Chi Li, asking curiously:
“Immortal Sister, why can’t we fly on a sword?”
Chi Li gazed into the distance without answering.
The area surrounding the Cangqing Sect was enveloped in rich spiritual energy and swirling mists, making one feel as if they had entered a fairyland.
Chi Li was looking toward the path they had just traveled, now obscured by clouds. She stared for a long time, as if trying to see through the haze.
In her previous life, Chi Li heard that because Mo Fan was physically weak, Immortal Yilin who had picked him up, did not fly back but personally walked him up the mountain.
Chi Li was taking the exact same path now, but not to run into them.
She wanted to know: if Mu Zhi and Mo Fan missed their chance to meet, would he still be brought back to the Cangqing Sect?
Thinking of this, Chi Li shifted her gaze to Mu Zhi and called out softly.
“Mu Zhi.”
Hearing her name, Mu Zhi responded and looked at Chi Li’s serious expression with confusion. Thinking there was something important to be told, she straightened up and stopped rummaging through her snacks.
“Does Immortal Sister have something to tell me?”
Chi Li forcibly suppressed the surging murderous intent in her heart. When she spoke to Mu Zhi, her voice was like clear flowing water, gentle as a spring breeze.
“Those who enter the immortal gates must sever worldly emotions. Naturally, I will not force you into anything, because no matter what, you will be my most beloved Junior Sister. But you must never give yourself up for another person.”
Chi Li paused, meeting Mu Zhi’s beautiful eyes. Her next words were exceptionally serious and powerful.
“You should always be yourself first.”
Mu Zhi was stunned. Those last words echoed in her mind, imprinting themselves deep in her heart.
She whispered the words back: “I should always be myself first…”
Chi Li nodded, then, as if remembering something, her tone grew colder.
“In the future, if you meet someone who claims they must ‘slay their wife to prove their Way,’ just remember: that person is an utter loser.”
“If they truly had talent, why would they need to kill someone to prove themselves?”
A hint of sarcasm touched Chi Li’s voice at the end. Mu Zhi listened, only half-understanding, but she answered obediently.
“I understand.”
Satisfied, Chi Li gently patted the girl’s head.
“Protecting yourself is the most important thing.”
Mu Zhi knit her brows in confusion. “Are there really people like that? If you kill your wife to ‘prove the Way,’ the wife is still a person. That’s a crime. Even if it’s not a life for a life, they can still successfully ascend? I feel like that’s very unreasonable.”
Mu Zhi pouted, her mood clearly dampened. “Then I think the ‘legal system’ of the gods in heaven isn’t very good.”
“Because such people often stand in positions of power and believe what they do is the truth, a matter of course,” Chi Li said indifferently.
“But in reality, no one has ever said that we cannot be the ones in power.”
The breeze pushed the mist around her feet, her sleeves fluttering in a stunning arc. Her deep eyes looked at the girl before her like a compassionate deity, yet deep within them was an undisguised, burgeoning ambition.
She did not give her pity to the world. In a life where she didn’t even know if she had a chance at survival, her pity was reserved solely for the person in front of her.
Simply because Chi Li did not want someone as proud as Mu Zhi to sacrifice herself to fulfill someone else’s path to godhood just because “Heaven” willed it.
That would not only be unfair to Chi Li’s years of careful teaching but, more importantly, unfair to Mu Zhi.
Pulling her thoughts back, Chi Li’s gaze turned cold. She glanced down the mountain once more. Seeing no one, she took Mu Zhi’s hand and continued upward.
The higher they went, the thinner the mist became.
The gate-keeping disciples of the Cangqing Sect immediately bowed respectfully upon seeing Chi Li.
“Eldest Martial Sister is back so soon? Has your training ended?”
Chi Li did not show others the same warmth she showed Mu Zhi. She resumed her usual cold demeanor, nodded slightly, and said:
“No, I have brought back a Junior Sister.”
The disciple was surprised, then saw Mu Zhi peeking out from behind Chi Li.
She was as bright as a blooming peach blossom, possessing the innocent charm of a young girl, showing no fear toward the unfamiliar environment.
“I am the Junior Sister the Immortal Sister brought back,” Mu Zhi said with unmistakable pride.
The disciple smiled and said warmly, “Eldest Martial Sister rarely brings anyone back. Anyone she chooses must have extraordinary talent.”
Hearing this, Mu Zhi’s mood soured. The “flower” seemed to wilt slightly as she muttered:
“Has she brought others back before?”
Chi Li heard the hint of interrogation in Mu Zhi’s voice and found it strangely amusing. She curved her slender fingers and lightly tapped the girl’s forehead, her voice filled with doting helplessness.
“You’re only listening to half the sentence again. The second half is the important part.”
The tap was light and didn’t hurt, but Mu Zhi still covered her forehead. Her fair face flushed red, though she remained stubborn.
“Is the first half not important then?”
The disciple nearby found Chi Li’s behavior unusual and couldn’t help but look twice. Amused by Mu Zhi, he explained:
“Eldest Martial Sister, don’t tease the young lady.”
He then turned to Mu Zhi. “Eldest Martial Sister has been in seclusion for years. This trip down the mountain was her first time leaving for training. So, you are the first person she has ever brought back.”
He glanced at Chi Li and continued, “Furthermore, to be recognized as a Junior Sister before even officially joining the sect… that’s also a first.”
Chi Li nodded, not denying his words. “He is correct. I have cultivated in seclusion for many years. As for bringing people back, there is only you.”
Chi Li didn’t realize how sincere she sounded. Mu Zhi’s blush deepened until her face was as bright as rouge, making her look even more captivating.
Seeing Mu Zhi turn her head away in embarrassment, Chi Li’s expression softened. Then, remembering something, she asked the disciple:
“Has Master gone down the mountain?”
The disciple thought for a moment and nodded. “Immortal Yilin mentioned a few days ago that he sensed a ‘heavenly anomaly.’ After informing the Sect Master, he left in a hurry. He hasn’t returned yet.”
Hearing this, Chi Li’s face darkened. An involuntary pressure radiated from her, making those around her shudder.
Her brow furrowed slightly as she fell into deep thought.
She had thought that by preventing their initial meeting, the outcome would change. Now it seemed she had underestimated “Heaven” and its blatant favoritism.
At that moment, she felt a hand slide into hers, their fingers intertwining.
The warm, delicate sensation brought Chi Li back to reality. Seeing Mu Zhi looking down with a red face, her gaze softened instantly.
“Let’s go. I’ll take you to meet the Sect Master first.”
Chi Li did not pull her hand away, silently accepting Mu Zhi’s gesture.
Even though she was the one who initiated the hand-holding, Mu Zhi’s face was so hot that even the cool mountain breeze couldn’t chill her blush.
