- Chapter 46 - She Didn't Eat It at All
The things sent out today went uneaten.
During these few days in the secret realm, Xiyu was forced by the mandate of Heaven to secretly follow Mo Fan. Although she could leave for brief periods, the two of them seemed forcibly bound together, making Xiyu increasingly depressed and frustrated the more she thought about it.
Consequently, the few individuals Chi Li had casually mentioned were killed by Xiyu using subtle methods silently, with no one the wiser.
Soon, in less than five days, the cultivators sent by the Yueming Sect had vanished completely, and almost all cultivators from other sects had perished as well.
However, Mo Fan, who lacked spiritual power, found himself sailing smoothly through this peril-filled secret realm. Not only did he avoid attacks from fierce beasts, but he also repeatedly encountered cultivators from other sects who offered him protection.
Out of a guilty conscience, Mo Fan never mentioned the Yueming Sect cultivators who had previously been with him to anyone else.
During these days, Chi Li would occasionally check on Mu Zhi. Xiyu, not wanting to stay by Mo Fan’s side alone, would go along, though she was repeatedly warned by Chi Li not to let Mu Zhi discover them.
Chi Li herself didn’t realize the trace of nervousness she revealed when warning Xiyu, but Xiyu saw it clearly and chose to say nothing.
By now, the two had reached the place where Mu Zhi and He Wen were staying. Fearing discovery, they both hid in the distance, watching from afar.
Xiyu looked at Mu Zhi, then at Chi Li, who was acting as cautious as a thief and spoke teasingly.
“It’s been so many days. Are you still not going over to see her?”
Chi Li merely lowered her eyes and gave a helpless smile, answering Xiyu:
“I promised her I wouldn’t risk entering the secret realm.”
Hearing this, Xiyu found it quite novel and remarked:
“From the sound of it, you came here behind your little Junior Sister’s back.”
Chi Li smiled without answering, but she didn’t deny it either. Xiyu pondered for a moment and asked curiously:
“You care this much… do you like her?”
Even as she asked, Xiyu felt the question was redundant. From what she had seen these past few days, Chi Li undoubtedly liked this Junior Sister she constantly spoke of.
Upon hearing this, Chi Li’s gaze fell once more on the figure with her back turned to them. Her deep, beautiful eyes seemed to ripple, gradually turning tender like melting glaciers.
Watching Chi Li’s expression, Xiyu expected her next words to be an admission. She did not expect Chi Li to say:
“She is my Junior Sister. How could I not like her?”
Xiyu was momentarily speechless. She looked at Chi Li with a strange expression, as if she had gained a completely new understanding of the person before her. After a period of silence, Xiyu frowned and chose her words delicately, speaking tentatively:
“Besides seeing her as a sister… do you not see her as anything else?”
Xiyu thought she was being obvious enough, but clearly, she didn’t fully understand this person she had once struck with lightning.
Chi Li’s brow furrowed slightly, but her response was quite frank:
“She is who she is. Why would I see her as anyone else?”
Hearing the slight displeasure in Chi Li’s voice, Xiyu was speechless again. She desperately wanted to manifest a water mirror in front of Chi Li to show her whether the look in her eyes was truly “just for a sister.”
Ultimately, Xiyu resisted the urge. She realized that with Chi Li’s current mindset, no amount of hinting would ever be noticed. Giving up on her attempts to imply anything more, Xiyu sighed.
She then frowned, looking toward Mu Zhi’s direction as if searching for something. Finding nothing, a flash of doubt crossed her eyes, and she whispered:
“Where did that little thing go again?”
She added helplessly, “Playing again, I see.”
They had arrived stealthily, and even the swarm of snakes protecting Mu Zhi and He Wen had failed to detect them.
Chi Li remained hidden behind a tree, gazing softly at Mu Zhi in the distance. After a long while, she finally spoke to Xiyu, her expression returning to its usual indifference.
“Let’s go.”
“Not going to watch a bit longer?”
“No.”
Xiyu laughed. “True. Once we’re out, there’s no need for this sneaking around.”
As they left, Xiyu turned back toward where they had been. Something new had appeared there.
“What did you leave behind this time?” Xiyu asked curiously.
Chi Li didn’t answer immediately. She paused, glancing back out of the corner of her eye to see Mu Zhi looking at the object with a confused expression.
“Something she likes to eat.”
“Cultivators have already achieved Inedia (fasting). I don’t believe she still feels hunger,” Xiyu said, suddenly feeling Chi Li might be beyond help.
“She won’t be hungry, but she likes it,” Chi Li said, her tone softening instinctively at the mention of Mu Zhi.
“But…”
Xiyu frowned as if a very serious problem had occurred to her. She stared at Chi Li and said:
“You leave these things silently and anonymously. Do you really think your Junior Sister will eat them?”
Xiyu had wanted to say this the first time Chi Li left something, but she had held back. Seeing as the secret realm was about to close, she finally couldn’t help herself.
Chi Li froze, appearing to seriously consider the question for the first time.
Seeing her like this, Xiyu knew Chi Li had likely just acted on a whim, worried her Junior Sister wouldn’t eat well. All of Chi Li’s usual caution vanished whenever her Junior Sister was involved.
Xiyu laughed. “So, your Junior Sister didn’t eat the previous items at all.”
Chi Li pursed her lips and remained silent.
After the two left, Mu Zhi, sensing something, looked toward their former hiding spot but saw nothing.
She walked over warily, her long silk scarf draped over her arm, floating in the air like a wisp of smoke as it hooked the object off the ground.
The food box was as exquisite and beautiful as always. Mu Zhi reached out and opened it. The sweet aroma of pastries filled the air, but she didn’t dare touch them.
“Junior Sister Mu.”
He Wen walked over, silently looking at the item in Mu Zhi’s hand. “Still haven’t found out who is leaving these?”
Mu Zhi’s gaze was heavy as she nodded. “Except for these snakes, there isn’t a single cultivator around us.”
In short, it was impossible for any cultivator to deliver things so quietly. Furthermore, the cultivators who entered the realm were all of similar cultivation levels.
Yet, every time, the items delivered were exactly what Mu Zhi loved to eat. It was as if an invisible person was constantly watching them.
At that thought, Mu Zhi felt a chill run down her spine. She handed the box to He Wen and said:
“Senior Sister He, please take these and dispose of them.”
The origin of these things was unknown. Since they were still in the secret realm, they couldn’t afford to be careless. He Wen nodded and replied:
“Rest here, Junior Sister. I will come back once I’ve handled it.”
Elsewhere, Chi Li and Xiyu found Mo Fan again. The area appeared peaceful but was hidden with formations, the core of which was concealed. It wasn’t the work of demonic beasts, but of a person.
A thick mist gradually spread, surrounding those who hadn’t yet left. Every step taken was onto a formation, they were deep within it, yet completely unaware.
The mist covered only a small area. From a distance, Chi Li narrowed her eyes, peering through the fog to see the people inside.
A mocking smile touched the corner of Chi Li’s mouth, quickly replaced by coldness. Her slender fingers formed a seal, and a flash of killing intent crossed her sharp features.
Seeing this, Xiyu watched Chi Li with interest. Once the spell was finished, she spoke:
“Your formation is strong enough. If you strengthen it further, the people inside won’t have a way out.”
“Then let them have no way out,” Chi Li said coldly and mercilessly.
Xiyu wasn’t overly surprised. Although it had only been a few days, she had truly felt Chi Li’s genuine desire to kill Mo Fan. Xiyu didn’t know where this hatred came from, but she had no intention of prying.
However, over these days, Xiyu had become well aware of Chi Li’s strength. Even though only her primordial spirit had entered, and her cultivation was capped at the Golden Core stage, her power was not to be trifled with. Moreover, Chi Li had found a way to use her spiritual power freely, to a degree that even Xiyu felt a bit wary.
Yet, for some reason, whenever Chi Li tried to kill Mo Fan regardless of the cost, he always managed to resolve the situation.
But the “resolution” was strange. Whenever Mo Fan was about to take a fatal blow, others would appear, one after another, to die in his place.
Once could be considered a coincidence, but Xiyu had witnessed it every single time. This caused Xiyu to fall into a silence. She could feel that “It” placed great importance on Mo Fan, and their actions might even be under surveillance.
Thinking of this, Xiyu looked at the indifferent face beside her but still couldn’t read anything.
Since previous attempts failed to kill him, Chi Li changed her strategy. This time, the formation wouldn’t harm him directly but would trap him there indefinitely. Besides the trapping formation, there were also illusion arrays surrounding the area. This was to ensure total success, silent and unnoticed.
Deep within Chi Li’s eyes was an endless coldness, like an abyss. As she looked at the figure in the array, she didn’t hide her fleeting ferocity.
“This time, he surely won’t get out.”
Xiyu remarked, then muttered under her breath, “This person really has a charmed life.”
Through the black mist, the figure inside was just standing there. The smile on his face was strangely eerie, like a fool dreaming of something pleasant, completely failing to notice the thickening fog.
Chi Li sneered. “That’s not necessarily true.”
Xiyu’s eyes flashed with surprise. She pondered for a moment before asking:
“He’s nothing special. Why does ‘It’ favor him so much?”
Chi Li shook her head slightly and didn’t answer. She had no way of investigating who had written the “text” she had seen.
She didn’t believe it was a divine book determining everyone’s fate. If it were truly written by a god, why was the logic so flawed? Why was everything specifically designed to clear a path for Mo Fan? And why did the story end abruptly after Mo Fan’s ascension?
It felt more like a story fabricated by some destitute scholar.
Seeing that Chi Li wouldn’t answer, Xiyu didn’t mind and turned her gaze back to Mo Fan in the array.
What Mo Fan saw was a smooth journey for himself, treasures and heavenly opportunities were all within his grasp. This illusion kept him deeply immersed and unable to extricate himself.
At that moment, the mist began to spread unexpectedly.
Chi Li’s expression tightened. She grabbed Xiyu and retreated. Just as she frowned, trying to investigate, she caught sight of a figure out of the corner of her eye. Her face changed instantly.
“Mu Zhi.”
