- Chapter 20 - The Elixirs Were Fed to Wild Boars
She said her elixirs were fed to wild boars.
After calming down and hearing Chi Li’s words, Yun Xi seemed to realize something. She released Chi Li’s hand and began rummaging through her storage space, mumbling under her breath.
“I almost forgot what I had in here since you didn’t mention it.”
As Chi Li took a step back, she silently laid down a barrier.
Outside, Immortal Yilin seemed to sense something. He paused, glancing toward the room out of the corner of his eye, but he said nothing and made no move to stop them.
Before Yun Xi even pulled the item out of her storage space, she covered her nose and mouth with her other hand, her expression flickering with disgust.
Not far away, Mo Fan, failing to notice the revulsion in their eyes, spoke up with a hint of anticipation.
“Is Senior Sister Yun looking for an elixir for me?”
Yun Xi didn’t argue. A flash of cunning gleamed in her eyes, and her voice carried a touch of mock eagerness.
“Yes, yes, yes. I’m looking for one just for you.”
Hearing Yun Xi’s words, a look of joy surfaced on Mo Fan’s face. He began to speak:
“I knew Senior Sister Yun was kind-hear…”
Before he could finish, he saw Yun Xi toss something toward him. He instinctively reached out to catch it.
“Thank you, Senior Sister Yun…”
In an instant, an unspeakable stench filled the air. It was an overbearing, irresistible force that invaded his nasal cavity, turning his unfinished words into a dry heave the very next moment.
Mo Fan stared at the incredibly foul-smelling spirit herb in his hand. The smile on his face gradually stiffened, and he even forgot to cover his nose.
Technically, that spirit herb was extremely precious and rare, but it possessed no medicinal effects only a pervasive, rank odor.
After Yun Xi discovered it, she kept it specifically to deal with shameless people who tried to snatch her elixirs. Using it now felt perfectly appropriate.
Mo Fan’s eyes rolled back repeatedly. Looking weak and breathless, it seemed he wouldn’t be saying any more disgusting things for a while.
The room was filled with the stench, but Yun Xi looked quite satisfied. Feeling more refreshed than ever, she pushed the frowning Chi Li toward the exit, her voice carrying a playful tone.
“Alright, alright, you can go now.”
Chi Li remained silent for a moment. She pushed away Yun Xi’s hand, still glancing back uneasily.
“I will return quickly.”
Knowing what Chi Li was worried about, Yun Xi nodded and glanced at the overwhelmed Mo Fan.
Standing outside the door, the sinister, possessed-like aura from before had vanished from Immortal Yilin. He had returned to his usual gentle demeanor. Seeing Chi Li walk out, he looked at her with a soft expression and asked:
“You asked me to come out, is there something important?”
Chi Li had prepared her excuse long ago. She nodded, her serious tone adding a layer of credibility to her words.
“Reporting to Master: before I came to Pill Peak, Junior Sister Mu, whom I was caring for, woke up. She informed me that she encountered a broken sword in the Sword Pavilion and saw an unknown vision within it.”
Upon hearing this, Immortal Yilin’s brow furrowed. He repeated the words in a low voice.
“A broken sword?”
The only broken sword that could appear in the Sword Pavilion of the Cangqing Sect was the one left behind by the Ancestral Master years ago.
However, ever since the Ancestral Master announced his seclusion, that broken sword had vanished without a trace.
Everyone in the Cangqing Sect assumed the Ancestral Master had taken the sword with him.
As if sensing Immortal Yilin’s thoughts, Chi Li spoke again with certainty.
“Master, I believe it is the Ancestral Master’s sword.”
After speaking, Chi Li lowered her eyes. The shadows cast by her eyelashes made it impossible to discern her true emotions.
Strictly speaking, Chi Li was telling the truth.
However, she did not mention that it was merely a phantom image, not the actual Ancestral Master’s sword.
Since it concerned the Ancestral Master’s weapon, Immortal Yilin’s expression turned grave. He pondered for a moment before speaking.
“In your opinion, what does this signify?”
The appearance of the Ancestral Master’s sword usually meant either his imminent return or the onset of great chaos in the world.
Chi Li’s expression remained unchanged, and her response was ambiguous.
“I believe that regardless of whether it is true or false, further investigation is required.”
Immortal Yilin could not be certain of the possibility of the Ancestral Master’s return, but he recognized the gravity of the situation. He said solemnly:
“If that is the case, I will find a time to explain the situation to Immortal Shangling.”
Just as Immortal Yilin prepared to head back into the room, Chi Li suddenly called out to him.
“Master.”
Chi Li rarely used such an urgent tone. It caused Immortal Yilin to halt his steps. Then, he heard Chi Li speak in a heavy, pressing voice.
“Master, two people have already been injured in the Sword Pavilion.”
The Ancestral Master’s sword would not actively harm people, but since injuries had occurred, the matter was urgent.
Hearing this, Immortal Yilin frowned and thought for a moment. He abandoned the idea of entering the room and said to Chi Li:
“Let him return on his own once his injuries are healed. I am going to find Immortal Shangling now.”
Chi Li bowed respectfully, her expression indifferent.
“I will relay the message to him.”
Once Immortal Yilin had left, Chi Li turned around and looked at the closed door. Her expression instantly turned cold and sharp.
Inside, Yun Xi didn’t know what it was that Mo Fan felt he absolutely had to say. Enduring the suffocating stench in the room, he said to her:
“Senior Sister Yun, I believe you will definitely be able to heal me.”
Yun Xi backed away with a look of pure disgust.
“I already told you, my elixirs are expensive and taste terrible.”
As she spoke, a voice inexplicably appeared in Yun Xi’s mind. It repeatedly commanded her in an irresistible tone to agree to Mo Fan’s request.
Perhaps seeing that Yun Xi remained unmoved, the voice changed its strategy. It began to entice her, listing the benefits she would receive in the future once Mo Fan became powerful.
Yun Xi felt irritated. Crossing her arms, she sneered back at the voice in her head.
[If he becomes powerful, why shouldn’t I become powerful first? No matter how you look at it, it’s more beneficial for me to rely on myself.]
Seeing that Yun Xi was immune to both threats and bribes, the voice vanished.
Yun Xi thought it had finally stopped and began to relax, only to find her mouth opening against her will. She was losing control and was about to agree.
This unknown horror terrified Yun Xi, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t control herself.
“Junior Brother Mo…”
Mo Fan was hesitating whether or not to throw away the foul herb in his hand when he heard Yun Xi speak. He immediately looked up with anticipation and saw what appeared to be “pity” for him in Yun Xi’s eyes. He smiled with satisfaction.
“Senior Sister Yun, I knew you were a kind person.”
Yun Xi curled her lips. She raised her hand, intending to pull off the disguise veil on her face, and spoke slowly.
“I will give the elixir…”
Before she could finish, the door behind her was kicked open with a loud “Bang!” The sudden crash caused the two people inside to hold their breath as they stared blankly at the newcomer.
Chi Li raised her hand to cover her nose. Her sharp gaze landed on Mo Fan, making him shiver violently as he stammered:
“Big… Big Senior Sister…”
Chi Li ignored him. She turned and grabbed Yun Xi’s wrist, speaking with absolute certainty.
“Yun Xi, didn’t you say that you accidentally lost all your elixirs and fed them to the wild boars in the mountains?”
Upon hearing Chi Li’s voice, Yun Xi seemed to snap back to her senses. She regained control over her body, though she was still shaken. She hurriedly addressed Mo Fan.
“My elixirs were all fed to wild boars. Junior Brother Mo should seek someone else.”
There were so many people on Pill Peak; anyone’s pills would be enough for Mo Fan to recover. There was absolutely no need for him to keep picking on her.
Hearing Yun Xi’s ruthless rejection once again, a dark emotion flickered in the depths of Mo Fan’s eyes. He lowered his head, putting on a pitiful act.
“I truly hope I recover soon.”
“If you’re sick, take medicine,” Chi Li said coldly.
Mo Fan immediately looked over with a hurt expression, causing both women to feel a sudden wave of revulsion. They retreated from the room together, leaving him alone holding the herb that reeked of decay.
As the door slammed shut, the inside and outside were completely isolated. With the windows and doors tightly closed, the stench from the spirit herb grew increasingly concentrated, becoming a suffocating, indescribable odor.
Mo Fan’s grip tightened. He looked down at the bizarre herb in his hand.
He stared at it for a moment, then, ignoring the lethal amount of stench it emitted, he looked at it as if he had acquired a precious treasure. With a face full of adoration, he murmured to himself:
“The Senior Sisters must be reluctant to let me continue being hurt.”
His words were disjointed, as if he were merely completing a specific line of dialogue, indifferent to whether anyone would answer him.
If Yun Xi knew that the herb she had left to disgust him was being cherished in such a twisted manner, she would have regretted not throwing him into a cauldron to burn him to death.
However, they were already outside and knew nothing of what was happening within.
Yun Xi took a moment to steady herself. Once she was certain she was no longer being forcibly controlled, she let out a long sigh of relief. One hand soothed her wildly racing heart while she extended the other toward Chi Li. Her terrified expression vanished, replaced by a grin.
“Give me a jar of wine. I need to calm my nerves.”
Chi Li glanced at her. She knew this was just an excuse, but she didn’t call her out.
She pulled the weakest wine from her storage bag and handed it to Yun Xi. Yun Xi didn’t complain, she took it and started drinking.
The spice spread down her throat, making Yun Xi feel completely clear-headed.
They walked in silence for a long time until they left the courtyard. Only then did Yun Xi lower the wine jar and speak gloomily.
“Just what is his background? He’s terrifying. No wonder you personally told me to be wary of him.”
Thinking back on what just happened, Yun Xi felt a chill run down her spine and couldn’t help but continue complaining.
“That guy is a dozen generations younger than me, but the way he looks at me… it’s like he thinks I’m his wife. If he isn’t disgusted, I certainly am!”
“I already said my elixirs are expensive. Does he think because he’s a man and Immortal Yilin’s new disciple, I’ll give them to him for cheap? Good grief, his desire to be a freeloading leech is written all over his face. Just how thick is this guy’s skin?”
Chi Li listened quietly, knowing Yun Xi had been holding back her anger. Once Yun Xi had finished venting, Chi Li spoke.
“Keep the disguise veil for now. Avoid contact with him as much as possible.”
Yun Xi nodded, removed the veil from her face, tossed it into her storage space, and spoke indignantly.
“As soon as Junior Sister Mu’s people deliver the materials, I’m going to strengthen the barrier around my courtyard. I won’t be wandering out unless I have to.”
“I was wondering why my eyelid has been twitching lately. So this was waiting for me.”
Suddenly, Yun Xi seemed to think of something. Her voice softened as she looked at Chi Li hesitantly.
Chi Li noticed her gaze, sighed, and said:
“You want to ask about my Master, don’t you?”
It wasn’t a question, she had already guessed Yun Xi’s thoughts.
Since Chi Li had brought it up, Yun Xi voiced her confusion.
“Immortal Yilin was clearly being influenced earlier. Aren’t you going to tell her?”
Chi Li closed her eyes, the “scripted” words flashing through her mind. Finally, she sighed.
“It’s useless. Master, she…”
Her voice trailed off. When she spoke again after a long pause, her voice had turned freezing cold, hiding a murderous intent that made one’s blood run cold.
“She is a crucial step arranged by it. The influence on her is hundreds or thousands of times stronger than on us.”
“I can remind her, but she can’t stay lucid for long.”
Hearing this, Yun Xi realized the severity of the situation. Her eyes grew grave, and she patted Chi Li’s shoulder comfortingly.
“It will be alright. It seems you are the exception now.”
Then, Yun Xi’s expression shifted, and she spoke with a deep frown.
“But you need to know why you are the exception.”
Upon hearing this, Chi Li froze.
She had always assumed that because of her rebirth and because she could see those “words,” she had become the anomaly in this world.
But now that Yun Xi had said it, she felt as if she had fallen into a state of total confusion.
Why was she the exception? It clearly had nothing to do with Mo Fan.
Who exactly made her the exception?
She knew nothing. With no immediate harm present, Chi Li could only take things one step at a time.
As she thought this, a sudden sharp pain shot through Chi Li’s head. Fragmented memories, shrouded in gray mist, made it difficult for her to see clearly. She couldn’t remember what she was overlooking.
She looked into the distance, trying to peer through the clouds, but it was in vain.
Her hands clenched beneath her sleeves until her knuckles turned a terrifying white, as if she were exerting all her strength to endure something.
There was still a long time before she would be framed for colluding with the Demon Race.
In the limited time she had left, she had to find a way to break the game.
