Chapter 26: A Tangled Mess
113
Bai Yao didn’t know how many times she had been so embarrassingly captivated by Luo Qi’s beauty.
Even with the silver mask covering half her face, Luo Qi didn’t need to make any extra movements. As long as she stood straight, her naturally radiant beauty could not be diminished in the slightest.
She stood beneath the moon; the moonlight was soft and bright, yet Bai Yao felt the entire sky was filled with her presence.
Bai Yao, having finished admiring the beauty, retracted her gaze and looked at Gu Sanmei in front of her, adding the three large characters “Exit Now” in a note above his head.
114
Luo Qi had come out to look for Bai Yao.
But as she approached, she saw Bai Yao raising her hand to Gu Sanmei in a swearing gesture, and then was caught off guard by Bai Yao’s passionate declaration.
Luo Qi froze on the spot, staring at the determined and sincere Bai Yao.
So Yao Yao really likes women?
Luo Qi then vaguely recalled the day on the roof when Bai Yao rushed into her arms.
Could Yao Yao really feel that way about her?
And if Yao Yao was indeed like that, then was her feeling for Yao Yao also that kind of feeling…
Luo Qi stared blankly at Bai Yao, the beat in her left chest gradually accelerating.
As her mind raced, Luo Qi was slowly nearing the final answer, but before she could fully comprehend it, Bai Yao in front of her suddenly spoke again.
115
On the other side, eager to shake off Gu Sanmei and find Luo Qi, Bai Yao patted Gu Sanmei’s shoulder and gave him one last perfunctory answer: “Everything I said is true, no lies.”
Gu Sanmei gave a final confirmation, “You really have your eye on our Fourth Master?”
Bai Yao glanced at Luo Qi, and said urgently, “Yes, yes, yes.”
Gu Sanmei threw Bai Yao a charming smile, “Got it, sister. You should have said so earlier. If that’s the case, you certainly won’t run away anymore.”
He looked up and imagined a beautiful future, saying, “When you stay in our fortress later, we’ll be true sisters.”
Bai Yao gave a sincere-looking yet perfunctory reply: “You’re right.”
Gu Sanmei had only come to check if Bai Yao had tried to escape again. Now that he had unexpectedly received a good answer, he cheerfully turned and walked toward his courtyard.
“Alright, sister, I’m relieved now. I’ve left a little maid inside to look after things. When you want to rest later, just ask her to take you to an empty room.”
Passing by Luo Qi, the good-humored Gu Sanmei kindly reminded her, “Hey, did you get lost? The latrine is straight east, and your dance troupe’s resting area is due south. You’re welcome.”
116
Watching Gu Sanmei hum a tune and walk away, Bai Yao rushed to Luo Qi’s side and said, “You came to find me!”
She wore her usual smile, her clear, round eyes shining like autumn water, and her freshly applied makeup was beautiful and delicate.
Luo Qi slightly lowered her eyes, staring intently at Bai Yao, but didn’t answer.
Bai Yao said, “Hmm?”
Although it was a bandit den, Black Cloud Fortress was actually very quiet after dark.
The wind passed over the eaves, stopping at the wall, bringing a refreshing scent of grass and a few sparse sounds of insects and birds.
In this environment, with Luo Qi staring at her, meeting those eyes filled with a starry tide, Bai Yao couldn’t help but recall how those eyes had been turbulent that day.
Bai Yao silently swallowed. She vaguely felt the atmosphere gradually changing, but couldn’t tell if it was for better or worse.
Bai Yao asked in confusion, “Luo Qi, why aren’t you talking? Why did you come to find me?”
Luo Qi lowered her eyes, finally speaking, “I came to talk about how to escape.”
Bai Yao was also planning to discuss this with Luo Qi and Lie Ruyang. Hearing Luo Qi say this, Bai Yao first organized her thoughts, but before she could speak, she heard Luo Qi say, “I apologize.”
Bai Yao was startled: “Ah?”
Bai Yao was confused: “What did you just say?”
Luo Qi lifted her lashes to look at Bai Yao and said, “I was too presumptuous. I didn’t know you wanted to stay here.”
The eyes storing star-light were once again obscured by her feathery lashes. Luo Qi said, “Yao Yao.” After calling her name, she paused, then continued, “Get some rest soon.”
“I’m leaving.”
117
Bai Yao saw the obvious look of dejection on Luo Qi’s face and quickly reached out to grab Luo Qi’s sleeve.
Her strength was light, but Luo Qi immediately stopped, though she still didn’t turn back.
Is she sulking?
Bai Yao looked at Luo Qi, then suddenly understood.
Hadn’t Luo Qi also questioned her when she asked Qin Wufang to call her by her “nickname” earlier?
That’s it! A young girl’s stubborn insistence on friendship!
118
Taking another step forward and grasping Luo Qi’s wrist, Bai Yao quickly explained, “Those words I said just now were to trick Gu Sanmei, they weren’t real! Of course I want to escape.”
Luo Qi looked at Bai Yao, lifting her lashes again as she spoke, and said, “Really?”
A trace of joy she couldn’t suppress rose on her face, but then immediately faded.
Because Bai Yao said in confusion, “Si Qingyu is a woman! How could I like her? I definitely like men!”
Bai Yao was perplexed. Although For the Prince, For the Phoenix was a fictional setting, it was still an ancient romance novel. Why did the people inside, one after another, think she was heading down the “Big Orange is Settled” path (i.e., becoming gay)?
But now that she had said the words aloud, Bai Yao felt a pang of guilt.

Amidst the chaos, Bai Yao mumbled softly, “I should like men, right?”
However, Bai Yao glanced at Luo Qi. Under the attack of Luo Qi’s beauty, Bai Yao lowered her head, and her self-doubt escalated: “At least I used to…”
Could it be that I don’t like men, but just like good-looking people?
Otherwise, why does my heart always flutter when I see Luo Qi?
Her little brain was nearing its limit. Bai Yao drew a sword and cut through the mess: “Ay, I don’t know, I don’t know. I used to know, but now I’m not so sure.”
In this moment of turmoil, the little thinker gnomes in Bai Yao’s brain were constantly tripping over each other and feeling miserable. They didn’t notice the sudden bright spark in Luo Qi’s eyes in front of her.
The little gnomes shouted and jumped around. Bai Yao simply lowered the volume in her brain.
Character Bai Yao.

Bai Yao looked up at Luo Qi and said, “Hey, let’s not worry about that for now. I want to ask, how did you recognize Lie Ruyang earlier?”
Lie Ruyang had altered her appearance, even slightly changing her body shape and height. If Bai Yao hadn’t seen the soles of her shoes, she wouldn’t have guessed who she was.
Luo Qi replied, “When I took action to subdue that strong man, I felt the circulation of her qiyun (energy flow). It was the same as when I sparred with Master Guilan earlier.”
Bai Yao thought for a moment and pressed further, “So, if she were just an ordinary person without internal energy, you wouldn’t have recognized her?”
Luo Qi nodded, “Mhm. Her disguise is indeed very skillful. It would be hard for me to recognize her.”
So that’s how it is.
It seems Lie Ruyang’s character setting of being skilled in disguise has not been broken.
Luo Qi asked, “Why are you asking this?”
Bai Yao smiled at her, “I was just curious.”
Then Bai Yao took Luo Qi’s hand again and said, “Follow me. Let’s go back to the dance troupe’s area.”

Late at night, a figure appeared deep within the lush mountains of Black Cloud Fortress.
The person stood among the trees, placed a leaf against their lips, and blew a bird call.
Moments later, the sound of wings flapping echoed in the dark night. Si Qingyu lowered the leaf from her lips, raised her wrist high, and caught a black eagle circling down.
Placing a rolled-up piece of paper into the small wooden tube next to the eagle’s leg, Si Qingyu raised her wrist and let the black eagle fly away.
Watching the black eagle quickly melt into the distant sky, Si Qingyu couldn’t help but recall the young lady’s look of trust.
Si Qingyu murmured, “I apologize, Miss Yun. General Yun will find you sooner or later. Rather than letting the credit go to others, it’s better to secure it in our hands.”
What Si Qingyu didn’t know was that at almost the exact same time, Bai Yao, who hadn’t believed her at all, followed Luo Qi to the dance troupe’s residence and found Lie Ruyang.
