- Chapter 20 - Cannon Fodder Ex-Boyfriend 20 - I Finally Found You
Gu Shiyu emerged from the Qi residence, originally intending to go straight home. However, a phone call from Father Su forced him off his path once again in the middle of the night.
Su Jingyi was acting out again. Consequently, the Su family needed him, someone who was not even officially engaged to the boy and, strictly speaking, had no legal relation to him to soothe and discipline this rebellious Omega who refused to follow anyone’s orders.
Because he had successfully talked Su Jingyi down from the tallest tree in the Su estate when they were children, the task of comforting and educating the Omega had inexplicably become his responsibility.
“He only listens to you,” they would always say, using that as an excuse to shrug off their own parental responsibilities and burdens.
They would even dangle a “carrot” in front of him, saying, “You two will definitely get engaged eventually; the Gu and Su families will be one soon enough,” just to keep him committed to the task.
To the old Gu Shiyu, this wasn’t much of a burden.
After all, his father’s primary requirement for him was to maintain a strong connection with the Su family to secure maximum benefits for the Gu family. Moreover, while Su Jingyi always appeared to loathe him on the surface, it was true—as the Sus claimed—that no matter how much the Omega resisted, the final result always aligned with Gu Shiyu’s words.
But today, whether it was due to exhaustion or some other reason, Gu Shiyu felt a surge of irritation toward the task of pacifying Su Jingyi for the first time.
Perhaps influenced by the protagonist’s mood, a drizzling rain began to fall as the Maybach pulled into the Su family estate.
Gu Shiyu rolled down the window. The wind, laced with rain, instantly swept over him, dampening his hair and moisturizing his pale, somber face. He reached out to wipe his cheek. The cold, damp sensation made him instinctively think of the bottle of ice water he had carefully wiped clean with a tissue, and that clean, frigid pheromone scent that felt as though a blizzard were howling toward him.
It was cold and bone-chilling. That feeling of suffocation, as if being completely buried by heavy snow, was truly impossible to like, at least for an Alpha whose pheromones were naturally incompatible.
This was why the union of Alpha and Omega was considered correct and natural; only their pheromones could blend without resistance, attracting and entangling each other, sparking deeper desires.
That was how it was supposed to be.
Was it really?
Gu Shiyu blinked slowly and moved his gaze away from the Omega’s interrogation. His face remained as cold and indifferent as ever.
“If you insist on thinking that way, there is nothing I can do. However, as I said, I do not agree.”
“So you are on their side too, are you? No! That is not right. Because”
The Omega on the bed let out a soft laugh. His gaze toward Gu Shiyu reflected the nearby lamplight, looking as though a flame had been ignited within his eyes.
“You have always been on their side.”
The sound of rain hitting the window shifted from a slow rhythm to a rapid beat. Droplets struck the transparent glass, sliding down in winding trails and washing away non-existent dust, yet failing to clear the mess scattered across the floor inside.
“I simply do not agree with the extreme idea you just mentioned. It has nothing to do with your father or the others.”
In the dimly lit bedroom, Su Jingyi leaned against the headboard, tugging repeatedly at the wrist handcuffed to the nightstand. The clinking and clanging made Gu Shiyu, sitting on the sofa nearby, frown and rub his tortured ears. He took a deep breath and offered his second piece of advice for the night.
“I think you should calm down first.”
Su Jingyi stroked his chafed wrist. Hearing this, he acted as if he had heard a hilarious joke, laughing until tears leaked out.
“Calm down? I think I am being very calm. Are you not the ones who are crazy? I just want to move out and live on my own for a while. Is that really worth such a huge reaction?”
As he spoke, Su Jingyi tugged at the handcuffs again.
He looked genuinely perplexed, his eyes filled with a wandering confusion as if he truly did not understand why his family was blocking this decision. It was just moving out; it was not as if he wanted to go die somewhere.
The Omega pouted aggrievedly, his amber pupils trembling under the light as if tears might fall at any moment.
But Gu Shiyu did not buy the act.
Facing the Omega’s tearful expression, the Alpha on the sofa spoke calmly:
“If your so-called moving out means leaving the city to go to Oates, then I think their strong reaction is not entirely without reason.”
Oates was a vacation island Father Su had purchased ten years ago. Due to various reasons, no one had set foot there since.
Upon hearing Su Jingyi’s plan, Gu Shiyu did not need to think hard to know the Omega would not be going alone. He would certainly take a certain Alpha with him—an Alpha he was currently planning to send away.
Lowering his eyelashes, Gu Shiyu rubbed his hands together on his knees. He pondered for a moment before looking up at Su Jingyi.
“Our families are currently discussing our engagement. They certainly will not let you leave at this time, let alone go to a place as far as Oates, where monitoring and security facilities are not even complete. Therefore, I suggest you drop the idea. Otherwise, you will likely spend the time until our engagement confined to this bed.”
Su Jingyi’s fingers stiffened around the handcuffs. He was unwilling to give in but had to admit Gu Shiyu was right.
However, he had no other choice. There were too many dangers surrounding Li Qingran. He could not, and would no longer allow, the Alpha to be entangled by other Omegas without his knowledge.
Therefore, he had to hide him far away—somewhere no one could find him.
But what could he do?
An Omega with only affection but no real power was merely a beautiful ornament in the family, displayed in the hall and kept under constant surveillance. So much so that the moment he discussed a trip to Oates with his confidant, Father Su had him locked in his room the next second.
Su Jingyi gripped the handcuffs tightly. The silver rings bit deep into his tender flesh, looking as if they might slice through his wrists and stain the white sheets red with blood.
No one understands me, Su Jingyi thought blankly. And no one will help me.
“I can help you.”
Amidst the flickering light, a tall figure appeared beside the lost Omega.
Su Jingyi looked up instinctively. The next second, he was caught off guard by a pair of ink-black eyes. The darkness in them flowed like a quiet river; no one knew what was hidden beneath the surface.
Su Jingyi blinked, doubting he had heard correctly. “What did you say?”
“I said, I can help you,” Gu Shiyu repeated patiently.
“I can tell Uncle Su that you have chosen Oates as our honeymoon destination. That is why you want to send someone ahead to scout the location and finish setting up the estate’s facilities. This way, even if Uncle Su still will not let you leave, he at least will not stop you from sending him away.”
Su Jingyi sat up straight. “What do you mean by this?”
The Alpha’s dark shadow on the floor grew more intense as he stepped closer to the light, yet his expression remained composed.
“Am I wrong? Do you not want to send Li Qingran away?”
Su Jingyi’s body tensed even further. “I do not know what you are talking about!”
“It is fine if you do not understand. You just need to know that I can help you achieve the result you want.”
For the first time, Gu Shiyu gave Su Jingyi a small smile. He had not used hair gel today, letting his soft hair fall over his forehead, which made him look less mature and aggressive.
But Su Jingyi still could not trust him. “But why would you help me?!”
When did Gu Shiyu become so kind-hearted?
“Actually, it is not really about helping you. I have just reached a realization.”
The Alpha shrugged. “You are never going to leave Li Qingran, are you? So, rather than forcing you apart and creating an even more uncontrollable situation, I might as well help you hide him. It is better for both of us right now.”
Su Jingyi still felt it was strange. He moved his lips to argue or refuse, but the Alpha spoke again in a leisurely tone:
“Otherwise, do you have a better way, given you cannot even leave this bedroom? Or would you rather cooperate with Qi Ziyan, who is so dedicated to your wellbeing?”
The handcuffs connecting the headboard to the Omega’s wrist were suddenly pulled into a straight silver line.
Smooth, level, and without another snag.
Even Li Qingran, who had always wanted a quiet life, felt that things had been a bit too quiet lately.
Ever since Su Jingyi had left his doorstep that day, there had been no sign of him. Qi Ziyan had not suffered another fit and tried to force help upon him either. As for Gu Shiyu, after sending a message in the middle of that night saying “the plan is pushed back a few days,” he had seemingly vanished from the face of the earth.
Everyone seemed busy with their own plans.
That was good.
That was how major characters should behave.
They should not keep coming over to increase the screen time of a cannon fodder character unless it was useful.
Li Qingran stretched, opened the curtains, and bathed in the warm sunlight with his eyes closed for a while. Then, he changed into loose, casual clothes, intending to go out for a big meal to mark a perfect end to his comfortable and cozy rut.
However, as Li Qingran went downstairs to leave his room for the first time in a long while, a tall figure in black appeared before he could even exit the revolving door.
The person was clearly an Alpha, dressed entirely in black. He was even wearing a black mask and hat. His aura was heavy and low; even standing in the sunlight, he seemed to radiate a dark gloom.
He seemed uncomfortable, constantly adjusting the angle of his hat. When he raised his arm, his bulging muscles nearly strained the seams of his shirt.
Li Qingran glanced over several times.
He found the outfit strangely familiar.
Just as he was wondering where he had seen this look before, the Alpha across from him seemed to sense something and snapped his head up, his gaze locking directly onto Li Qingran’s position.
Li Qingran froze. Before he could react, the stranger strode toward him. Beneath the black brim of the hat, a pair of dark green eyes fixed on him like a venomous snake locking onto its prey. A faint scent of gunpowder lingered on his pale fingers. It was scalding and hot, matching his raspy, excited voice.
“I finally found you!”
Li Qingran heard him say.
