- Chapter 6 - The Gold-Digging Supporting Female Character in a Story of True and False Young Masters (Part 6)
“Master Ling, the post Cui Minmin made was deleted by someone, and the data wasn’t preserved. It can’t even be recovered.” The person on the other end of the phone reported nervously.
“Check Cui Minmin’s account,” Ling Yuanbai said, still sitting in his car, his fingers lightly tapping on the steering wheel as he pondered.
The person quickly replied, “Master Ling, Cui Minmin’s account has been suspended. It won’t be restored anytime soon.”
“I see.” Ling Yuanbai chuckled, somewhat surprised that Fang Mo had acted so quickly. Was Fang Mo confident he could compete with him, or had he lost his senses over a beauty?
But in just one day, could Su Qingmeng really have such influence? Ling Yuanbai was skeptical. Perhaps Fang Mo was deliberately putting on a show for him.
“Then…”
“Let it be for now,” Ling Yuanbai said calmly. The person on the other end breathed a sigh of relief and promptly hung up.
Ling Yuanbai looked through the windshield toward the bus stop ahead, the one that serviced the tenement buildings. Sure enough, before long, he saw the bus pull in. Fang Mo stepped off first, followed closely by Su Qingmeng.
Fang Mo wore his usual icy expression, while Su Qingmeng trailed behind him with a smile, seemingly the only one invested in their interaction. Yet Ling Yuanbai noticed Fang Mo’s deliberate pause after stepping off the bus, his younger brother had slowed his pace for Su Qingmeng.
Tap, tap. Two knocks sounded on the car window.
Ling Yuanbai turned to see Lu Yaoqing outside the window. He collected his thoughts, rolled down the window, and flashed a friendly, neighborly smile.
“Illegal parking. Pay the fine,” Lu Yaoqing teased playfully.
Ling Yuanbai played along. “How much is the fine?”
“It should be at least a few hundred thousand,” Lu Yaoqing replied with mock seriousness. To her surprise, Ling Yuanbai actually pulled out a black-gold card from his wallet and prepared to hand it to her.
Unamused by his excessive cooperation, Lu Yaoqing pouted. “I’m in a hurry to get to class. I don’t have time to joke around with you.”
“Yaoqing, ” Ling Yuanbai suddenly called out to her.
Lu Yaoqing, who had been about to turn and leave, looked back at him in confusion. She noticed the hesitation on his face. Though not particularly sensitive, she knew Ling Yuanbai well. When her gentle, refined childhood friend wore such an expression, it meant he had encountered something troubling.
Without a second thought, she quickly turned her gaze forward and spotted Fang Mo and Su Qingmeng standing unusually close to each other.
They were almost a head apart in height. Though only Su Qingmeng was smiling and talking, the way Fang Mo occasionally glanced down at her was enough to show that he treated her differently. After all, she had never heard of Fang Mo being this close to any other girl.
Lu Yaoqing’s face paled slightly, and she found herself following them almost involuntarily.
Su Qingmeng spotted her keenly and greeted her warmly, “Yaoqing, over here!”
She naturally linked arms with Lu Yaoqing and introduced her to Fang Mo with a smile, “Senior, this is my classmate, Lu Yaoqing. Yaoqing, this is Fang Mo, a junior in the Computer Science Department.”
Lu Yaoqing naturally knew Fang Mo. She had fallen in love with him at first sight on the first day of freshman orientation and had been inquiring about him ever since. Hearing that he disliked girls who actively pursued him, she had always held back, not daring to approach him. Now, witnessing the ambiguous atmosphere between him and Su Qingmeng, she forced a strained smile.
“R-Really? Class is starting, I think the bell already rang. I… I should go…” Lu Yaoqing stammered incoherently, pulling her arm back from Su Qingmeng’s grasp. Without looking back, she hurried toward the classroom.
Su Qingmeng glanced at Fang Mo. The male lead beside her hadn’t even batted an eyelid upon seeing the female lead. She let out a soft, disapproving click of her tongue. Fang Mo shot her a sidelong glance but suddenly grabbed her arm, saying, “Watch out.”
The next moment, Ling Yuanbai drove past slowly in his car, braking to a stop beside Su Qingmeng. Leaning out the window, he apologized, “Sorry, classmate, I didn’t hit you, did I? Would you like me to take you for a check-up?”
Ling Yuanbai was strikingly handsome and poised. Even after nearly hitting someone, he didn’t evoke any resentment. Su Qingmeng could clearly see the gentle smile on his lips and the cold indifference hidden behind his glasses.
She shook her head but felt Fang Mo’s grip on her arm tighten slightly. Tilting her head up, she noticed his tense jawline.
Ling Yuanbai first glanced at Fang Mo’s firm hold on Su Qingmeng’s arm before meeting Fang Mo’s gaze. Both their eyes were calm and unreadable, revealing nothing unusual.
Nodding politely at Fang Mo, Ling Yuanbai said gracefully, “I’m Ling Yuanbai, a junior in the Finance Department. If there are any issues, feel free to come find me.”
Seizing the opportunity, Su Qingmeng pulled out her phone and smiled brightly. “Then could I trouble Senior Ling to add me on WeChat?”
Both Ling Yuanbai and Fang Mo paused for a moment. Ling Yuanbai looked into Su Qingmeng’s crescent-shaped peach blossom eyes and couldn’t help but chuckle softly. In the end, he still added her on WeChat.
With his contact secured, Su Qingmeng’s smile deepened. As Ling Yuanbai drove away, she turned to meet Fang Mo’s unusually dark gaze. Showing no trace of guilt, she asked coyly, “Senior, why are you still holding my arm?”
Only then did Fang Mo realize his hand was still on her arm. His palm suddenly felt scorching hot, and he quickly released her, feeling an inexplicable surge of irritation.
Pretending not to notice his frustration, Su Qingmeng bid him farewell with a cheerful smile. When she entered the Finance Department classroom, she saw Lu Yaoqing sitting dejectedly alone in the last row. Her usual group of friends occupied the front row, her usual spot, and kept glancing back at her.
As Su Qingmeng sat down beside her, Lu Yaoqing mumbled, “Can you let me sit alone in the back row?”
“What’s wrong, Yaoqing?” Su Qingmeng mimicked her posture, leaning over the desk. When Lu Yaoqing turned her head, she met Su Qingmeng’s pitiful, teary eyes. “If I did something wrong earlier, I can apologize.”
Faced with those misty peach blossom eyes, Lu Yaoqing’s heart instantly softened. Her sadness had nothing to do with Su Qingmeng.
“It’s not your fault. I’m just feeling a bit unwell.” Lu Yaoqing hesitated before asking, “You and Senior Fang Mo, are you two close?”
As if caught off guard by the question, Su Qingmeng’s face flushed bright red. After a moment, she sneakily glanced around before pulling Lu Yaoqing closer and whispering into her ear, “Fang Mo and I just started dating. He’s a bit aloof, so I’m not sure how long it’ll last. I’m only telling you, please don’t tell anyone else!”
“Yaoqing? Are you okay? You look a little pale.”
Lu Yaoqing stared at Su Qingmeng’s red lips moving as she spoke, but a roaring sound filled her ears, making it hard to hear anything else.
“Yaoqing?” Su Qingmeng called her name again.
Lu Yaoqing forced a smile and said, “I think Senior Fang Mo is a good person. I’m sure the two of you will last.”
Before she could finish, tears began streaming uncontrollably down her face. Unable to hold back any longer, she let out a loud sob. Her first heartbreak had struck too suddenly, and she couldn’t bear it.
Seeing Lu Yaoqing crying so pitifully, Su Qingmeng, the very cause of her distress, felt a twinge of guilt. She pulled a tissue from her bag and gently wiped Lu Yaoqing’s tears, soothing her softly, “What’s wrong? Who made our Yaoqing cry? Tell me, and I’ll go teach them a lesson.”
Lu Yaoqing’s sobbing drew attention from the front rows. Not only were her friends watching, but even some classmates she barely knew were turning to look. Fortunately, they were seated in a corner. Su Qingmeng straightened up, slightly turning her body to shield Lu Yaoqing from view. She smiled warmly at the curious onlookers and gestured for them to stop staring.
Noticing the attention, Lu Yaoqing tried hard to stifle her sobs. She had already lost in love, she didn’t want to lose her dignity too.
Without turning around, Su Qingmeng patted her slender shoulder and said, “If you can’t hold it in, lean on my shoulder. No one will see. Don’t worry, even if you soak my clothes, I won’t mind.”
Lu Yaoqing buried her face in Su Qingmeng’s shoulder and cried quietly. She had no idea how much time had passed when she finally lifted her head, her eyes red and swollen. Noticing she had soaked a patch of Su Qingmeng’s clothes, she felt deeply embarrassed but didn’t know how to bring it up.
Su Qingmeng thoughtfully handed her a wet wipe from her bag. “Press this on your eyes. It’ll help with the swelling and redness.”
Touched, Lu Yaoqing felt like crying again. This girl, who was even more delicate than her, had offered her shoulder to cry on and was so considerate and forgiving. She gazed at Su Qingmeng’s profile, her peach-blossom eyes filled with tenderness. Such a fairy-like classmate deserved to be in a relationship, even if it felt like a waste on a guy. But the thought that it was Fang Mo.
“I’m okay…” Lu Yaoqing mumbled. “I’m sorry. You trusted me enough to tell me about your relationship, and I should be happy for you. It’s just that I just went through a breakup, so I couldn’t help crying. I didn’t mean to ruin your moment.”
Su Qingmeng finally turned to face her. Lu Yaoqing’s eyes were red from crying, and with her adorable appearance, she looked a bit like a little rabbit. No wonder she was the story’s sunshine-like heroine, she could even apologize to the rival who had stolen her crush. Su Qingmeng reached out and patted her head, comforting her, “It’s okay to cry after a breakup. The next one will be even better.”
“Yeah, you’re right…” Lu Yaoqing nodded.
Su Qingmeng watched the girl’s sullen expression, her eyes darting thoughtfully before she smiled and said, “Have you ever heard the saying that a new bag cures all ailments, including heartbreak?”
Lu Yaoqing looked at her slightly confused, only to see her open her phone’s photo album and point to a bag in the picture. “Do you like this bag?”
Although it wasn’t a brand she usually carried, the design of the bag appealed to Lu Yaoqing’s taste, and she found herself liking it at first glance.
Seeing the sparkle in her eyes, Su Qingmeng quickly added, “When I bought this bag yesterday, I thought it was as sweet as you are. It would suit you perfectly. I decided to get it first, if you liked it, I’d give it to you. If not, I’d keep it for myself.”
Lu Yaoqing, being naturally naive, didn’t notice the flaws in Su Qingmeng’s words and was deeply moved. “Alright! Transfer the bag to me. How much did you pay for it?”
Su Qingmeng bit her lip, hesitating for a moment before saying, “Forget it, forget it. Between good sisters, why talk about money? Consider it a gift from me.”
“No way!” Lu Yaoqing wasn’t the type to take advantage of others. Besides, she noticed that Su Qingmeng’s clothes were from common brands and didn’t seem particularly well-off. “I have to pay you, or else you’re not treating me like a sister.”
Su Qingmeng’s eyes curved into a smile. “It’s only thirty thousand yuan. Honestly, I feel a bit embarrassed even charging you…”
Lu Yaoqing immediately transferred fifty thousand yuan to Su Qingmeng via WeChat, but Su Qingmeng clicked “Decline.” Lu Yaoqing sent the money again, saying, “Consider the extra as a prepayment for future purchases you help me with.”
“No!” Her fairy-like classmate threw her words back at her. “I already feel bad taking your money. Giving me extra is just too much. Are you not treating me like a sister?”
Su Qingmeng had a gentle beauty, and even when she showed a hint of temper, it came across as soft, warming Lu Yaoqing’s heart. As the only daughter of the Lu family, she was used to being generous in her interactions, and her friends often took advantage of her wealth without a second thought. Someone like Su Qingmeng was a rare find among her acquaintances.
Unable to help herself, Lu Yaoqing hugged Su Qingmeng and said, “Qingmeng, you’re so wonderful.”
“Girls in the back row, mind your behavior!” The teacher’s sudden warning from the podium made Lu Yaoqing awkwardly release Su Qingmeng. The two of them tacitly lowered their heads, then turned slightly to share a quiet laugh.
At noon, when Fang Mo went to the cafeteria, he spotted Su Qingmeng.
She was sitting with Lu Yaoqing, chatting and laughing, her smile far more genuine than the ones she gave him. He also noticed several male students approaching her, and she seemed to accept their advances without hesitation, frequently taking out her phone to add them on WeChat.
Frowning, he took a detour to avoid them.
That evening, after his late shift, he ran into Su Qingmeng again.
The girl was standing in the exact same spot as the day before, waving at him as she said, “Senior, have you made up your mind? Will you be my boyfriend?”
Fang Mo’s gaze, however, fell on her phone. The still-lit screen clearly showed a chat interface. From the moment they’d met until now, Su Qingmeng had never once asked to add him on WeChat.
