The Cannon Fodder Roles I Play All Become White Moonlights [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 30.2
The thought of soon overthrowing Jiang Lingfeng, the division commander, and triggering a major reshuffle in the navy, which higher-ups had repeatedly warned not to touch, filled him with excitement. He flashed Jiang Lingfeng a sinister smile.
The Second Regiment arrived quickly.
The entire army formed neat square formations on the training ground, with clear divisions between the regiments.
Only Su Qingmeng was late, and everyone grew restless as they waited.
Jiang Lingfeng’s jaw tightened more and more as he silently watched the sun gradually sink westward, counting the seconds in his heart. He thought, Five more minutes. If Su Qingmeng doesn’t arrive by then, I’ll have to take action, regardless of the consequences!
Fortunately, just as he counted to 180 seconds in his mind, Su Qingmeng arrived.
With her left leg bandaged, Su Qingmeng seemed to move with some difficulty. She wore a red floral long-sleeved blouse and a white long skirt, making her appear both delicate and charming.
But Jiang Lingfeng’s gaze was fixed on her leg. In an instant, his murderous aura surged uncontrollably, and he glared at Lin Jiaying with an icy intensity.
For a moment, Lin Jiaying felt an illusion of suffocation, as if Jiang Lingfeng might strangle him without a second thought. Unconsciously, he blurted out an explanation, “She injured it while dancing!”
Su Qingmeng had excellent balance. Standing on one foot, she pointed her crutch at the person holding an umbrella behind her and said with slight annoyance, “Could you be a bit more professional with that umbrella? The sun is hitting me.”
The man Lin Jiaying had sent to forcibly bring her there was speechless. Why wasn’t this girl the least bit afraid? And wait, why had he obediently held the umbrella for her all the way here?
Lin Jiaying sneered, “Comrade Su, your behaviour is starting to resemble that of a capitalist’s wife.”
“What behaviour?” Su Qingmeng, never one to back down, retorted faster than he could continue. “I’m injured, and Director Lin dragged me here by force. If you ask me, Director Lin’s actions are nothing short of banditry and hegemony. You even defy orders from above, they’ve already approved my rest. Does Director Lin think he can control everything single-handedly, or perhaps even change the sky over this southern island?”
Lin Jiaying snorted heavily. “I won’t engage in your sophistry.”
Jiang Lingfeng took a step forward as if to support Su Qingmeng, but she deftly avoided him, instead placing her hand on Li Jianhua’s arm. Picking up her crutch, she pointed at Chen Dayong: “Chen Dayong, since you’re here too, it’s time to settle the score for when your wife and son ganged up on my son. Do you think that just because Old Yang is gone, you can bully us, a widow and her child? You ungrateful wretch! Have you forgotten that if it weren’t for Old Yang pulling you up, you’d have been executed long ago for being a river pirate!”
Chen Dayong hadn’t expected Su Qingmeng to target him first upon her arrival, it was completely different from what he had envisioned. He quickly glanced at Lin Jiaying.
Lin Jiaying was equally taken aback by Su Qingmeng’s sudden attack on Chen Dayong. It seemed the girl had no shortage of people to offend.
Those standing near Chen Dayong clearly noticed the covert exchange of glances between him and Lin Jiaying but remained silent, except for Su Qingmeng.
The fearless girl spoke out in front of the entire assembly: “Why are you looking at Director Lin? Planning to collude with him to frame me or slander the Yang family?”
She then turned to Lin Jiaying with feigned politeness: “Director Lin, I’m not implying that you would slander me. I mean, someone of your stature, a high-minded, principled cadre from the capital, would never engage in any underhanded dealings with Chen Dayong.”
If the situation hadn’t been so tense, Li Jianhua would have laughed aloud. Glancing to his right, he noticed Old Zheng stifling a chuckle as well. To his left, even Jiang Lingfeng’s eyes held a clear glint of amusement, more obvious than his own.
Lin Jiaying gritted his teeth and said, “I would never slander you, but if you and Jiang Lingfeng have done anything improper, the organization will uncover it.”
“Director Lin,” Su Qingmeng, with her delicate appearance, stood out among the group of burly men, looking vulnerable and helpless. Compared to the others, her words seemed more credible. “Didn’t I explain everything clearly during your last investigation? Deputy Director Zheng and Political Commissar Li were both present. So what new scheme are you plotting now? I mean, why exactly have you summoned me, an injured person, here?”
Lin Jiaying raised his chin, signalling Chen Dayong to continue his accusations against Su Qingmeng. Chen Dayong stammered as he tried to fabricate stories about her and Jiang Lingfeng, but to his surprise, the young girl showed no sign of panic. Instead, she looked at him with utter disdain.
Chen Dayong suddenly found himself at a loss for words. As he lowered his head, pondering how to vilify Su Qingmeng and Jiang Lingfeng, Jiang Lingfeng abruptly spoke: “Chen Dayong, what was your motive for killing Lin Wangbei?”
Chen Dayong’s head snapped up, his eyes wide with disbelief as they met Jiang Lingfeng’s sharp, penetrating gaze. For a moment, he panicked, and in that panic, a murderous intent surged within him.
With the exception of Su Qingmeng and Lin Jiaying, everyone present was a soldier who had faced life and death on the battlefield, including Old Zheng, who had transitioned from military service. They were acutely sensitive to killing intent and almost simultaneously grew alert.
“Jiang Lingfeng, you killed Division Commander Yang! I’ll make you pay with your life!” Chen Dayong swiftly drew his sidearm, but in the next instant, Jiang Lingfeng had disarmed him with one hand.
In just two moves, Jiang Lingfeng broke Chen Dayong’s right arm and pinned his other arm, rendering him completely immobile.
At this moment, he truly realized that Jiang Lingfeng hadn’t become the division commander by mere luck, especially when Jiang Lingfeng presented evidence of his secret dealings with Lin Wangbei in front of the entire army.
Jiang Lingfeng had been prepared all along. From Lin Wangbei’s autopsy report to on-site trace photographs, from the military map of the Southern Frontier Island that Chen Dayong had provided to Lin Wangbei, to his own application for wiretapping equipment and the listening devices retrieved from the Yang residence.
“Chen Dayong, do you have anything to say?” Jiang Lingfeng asked with extreme calm.
Chen Dayong turned to look at the Third Regiment he had personally trained, only to realize that the First and Second Regiments had already surrounded them. He stood no chance of winning.
His eyes red with fury, he spat out bitterly, “I refuse to accept this! After all these years of hard work, why should you be the division commander? Just because you grew up in the army, while I started out as a water bandit?”
Jiang Lingfeng offered no explanation as to why Chen Dayong could never become division commander. With a wave of his hand, he ordered Chen Dayong to be taken away.
Then, he turned sharply to face Lin Jiaying.
Lin Jiaying clearly hadn’t expected that his collaborator was also the murderer of his son. He stood frozen in place, completely stunned.
“Director Lin, Lin Wangbei is not only guilty of aggravated assault and attempted murder, but his actions on the Southern Frontier Island also involve espionage. As his father, we have no choice but to suspect you as well. Please cooperate with our investigation,” Jiang Lingfeng said coldly.
All these days in the army, he had been setting the stage.
Lin Jiaying had sailed smoothly through life, always looking down from above as others fell into the traps he laid. He never imagined that one day he would be brought down on this remote Southern Frontier Island, defeated by Jiang Lingfeng, a man he had always looked down upon for his origins as a stray child.
His lips turned pale, and cold sweat drenched him. He could only utter weakly and fearfully, “I’m not a spy. I had no idea what Lin Wangbei was doing… Old Zheng, Old Zheng! You know me!”
Terrified of being stripped of his position and losing everything, he flailed like a drowning man searching for a lifeline. Finally, his eyes landed on Su Qingmeng, and he reached out to grab her.
But before his hand could touch her, Jiang Lingfeng swiftly intercepted it. The man, trained in the military since childhood, was strong, in that instant, Lin Jiaying felt as though his wrist would shatter. Then, in the next moment, his knee was struck hard…
It was Su Qingmeng’s cane hitting his knee.
Lin Jiaying cried out in pain and fell to his knees.
Jiang Lingfeng turned to look at her, and she blinked innocently, saying without a hint of guilt, “I was just scared. It was purely self-defense.”
If not for the mischievous glint in her eyes, Jiang Lingfeng might have believed her. A flicker of amusement crossed his gaze as he casually replied, “Hmm.”
Jiang Lingfeng handed Lin Jiaying over to Li Jianhua, interrogation was the political commissar’s job, and then turned to Old Zheng. “Minister Zheng, my apologies for any lack of hospitality these past few days. I hope you’ll understand.”
Old Zheng looked at Jiang Lingfeng with a complex expression, suddenly realizing why Jiang Lingfeng had remained so silent these days. He had been quietly observing Lin Jiaying’s antics, only to strike when the time was right and capture them all.
Who said that someone who grew up in the army didn’t know how to play mind games?
He patted Jiang Lingfeng’s hand. “I came mainly to investigate Lin Wangbei’s case. Now that we’ve found the real culprit, I’ll send a telegram to the capital.”
Old Zheng hesitated and glanced at Jiang Lingfeng. Chen Dayong was a soldier, and the military could execute him directly if he committed a crime, but Lin Jiaying was different, he still had to bring Lin Jiaying back with him.
Jiang Lingfeng didn’t make things difficult for him and nodded. “I’ll also report my findings to my superiors. When the time comes, I’ll arrange for someone to escort you and Lin Jiaying back to the capital.”
Old Zheng let out a long sigh of relief. Then, looking at Jiang Lingfeng and the sharp-tongued Su Qingmeng standing behind him, he couldn’t help but feel a little curious about how such a reserved man had managed to pursue such a quick-witted young woman.
Perhaps it was because he was being too brazen, but Jiang Lingfeng subtly positioned his tall frame completely in front of Su Qingmeng, shielding her from view. “Minister Zheng, you must be tired today. I’ll have Xiao Zhang escort you back to the guesthouse.”
Without waiting for Old Zheng to get far, Jiang Lingfeng turned around and scooped Su Qingmeng up into his arms.
Su Qingmeng gasped in surprise, pushing against his chest with her hands. “Jiang Lingfeng, what are you doing?!”
Jiang Lingfeng remained as steady as a mountain. “Your foot is injured. I’m carrying you back.”
His gaze fell on her flushed cheeks, her eyes glistening, whether from anger or embarrassment, he couldn’t tell, adorable and captivating.
“Put me down!” Su Qingmeng exclaimed irritably.
Thinking she was embarrassed by the presence of others, Jiang Lingfeng lowered his voice and reassured her, “It’s fine. Everything that happens in the military base is strictly confidential. They won’t gossip.”
But Su Qingmeng rolled her eyes at him. “With you holding me like this, the sunlight is directly hitting my face. All the sun protection I’ve done these past days has gone to waste.”
That reason was so quintessentially Su Qingmeng that Jiang Lingfeng couldn’t hold back a laugh.
