- Chapter 28.1 - The Cannon Stepmother in an Era Novel (Part 9)
Jiang Lingfeng stood guard outside all night, but Lin Wangbei did not appear as he had anticipated. The next morning, he came as usual to cook breakfast for Su Qingmeng, without bringing Yang Dongming.
Su Qingmeng, unusually, followed him into the kitchen and watched as Jiang Lingfeng deftly rolled up his sleeves and tied on an apron.
The tall, stern man still exuded an aura of severity even with the apron on, especially when he picked up the knife to chop vegetables and tossed them into the wok. His movements seemed less like cooking and more like mercilessly striking down an enemy.
The intensity of his presence was so overwhelming that Su Qingmeng couldn’t help but take two steps back.
Noticing her movement, Jiang Lingfeng lifted his eyes and gave her a deep, lingering look. “Sister-in-law, it might be better if you wait outside.”
But Su Qingmeng stubbornly refused. When he sat in front of the stove to tend to the fire, she even sat down beside him, so close that there was less than a foot of distance between them.
Jiang Lingfeng’s expression remained unchanged, but the speed at which he pulled the bellows doubled, causing the flames to surge and nearly leap out.
Su Qingmeng seemed to think the distance wasn’t close enough and shifted even closer to him. He straightened his back rigidly, keeping his gaze fixed straight ahead, but she crooked a finger, signalling him to lower his head. Leaning close to his ear, she whispered, “I saw Lin Wangbei come around here the other day, but I don’t know if he was scouting the area or doing something else. Maybe he installed some kind of shady equipment.”
As if seeking Jiang Lingfeng’s reaction, she moved even closer and voiced another point of suspicion: “Lin Wangbei is very familiar with Nanjiang Island. He’s only been on the island for such a short time, yet he knows some paths even I’m unaware of.”
On the beach, she hadn’t known when he had hidden there or how he had managed to catch up with her and Teacher An so quickly. The only explanation was that he was extremely familiar with Nanjiang Island and knew some unknown shortcuts.
The breath from the girl’s words brushed against Jiang Lingfeng’s ear, carrying the faint, unique fragrance of her. For the first time, Jiang Lingfeng found his mind wandering during a conversation. His gaze swept over her parted red lips, lingering for a few seconds before he distractedly averted his eyes and nodded to indicate he had understood.
Jiang Lingfeng had been pulling the bellows too vigorously, causing a layer of half-dried congee to stick to the bottom of the pot. Su Qingmeng looked at him, but he remained unperturbed, calmly stating, “This is just how congee is cooked.”
If Su Qingmeng didn’t know how to cook herself, she might have believed him, given his confident demeanor.
Jiang Lingfeng told Su Qingmeng to go eat while he inspected the house from top to bottom. Sure enough, he found a military-grade listening device under the dining table. It was brand new, likely recently installed.
This was not something Lin Wangbei could have obtained on his own. Jiang Lingfeng immediately realized that the target might not only be Su Qingmeng but also him.
Whoever had given this device to Lin Wangbei knew him well and understood his investigative abilities, which was why they hadn’t installed it in his home but in Su Qingmeng’s.
However, they couldn’t afford to let their guard down against Lin Wangbei either.
Su Qingmeng mouthed the question to him: “What do we do now?”
Jiang Lingfeng’s gaze once again fell on her red lips. Glossy with moisture, they resembled crimson roses at dawn, exquisitely vibrant. For a moment, he nearly lost his focus again.
After a brief pause, he shook his head at her and spoke slowly, his voice neither too loud nor too soft, just enough to be overheard: “I kept watch all night, and Lin Wangbei never showed up. He must have settled down. You can rest easy tonight, sister-in-law. Once he’s better, I’ll escort him off the island.”
Su Qingmeng was momentarily taken aback but quickly caught on, replying with a bright smile.
Jiang Lingfeng watched her grin like a little fox, a flicker of amusement in his eyes. After a moment’s thought, he took her hand and wrote a few words in her palm: I’ll be here tonight.
When he finished writing, her hand remained in his, one small and fair, the other large and tanned, fitting together perfectly. The lingering softness of her palm on his fingertips made Jiang Lingfeng suddenly reluctant to let go.
Unaware of his thoughts, Su Qingmeng pulled her hand back and shot him a playful glare, complaining softly, “That tickles.”
“Mm.” Jiang Lingfeng’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he gave a simple acknowledgment and turned to leave. “Dongming is still over there. I’ll head back now. Xiao Zhang is waiting outside.”
But the moment the door closed, he raised a hand to cover his eyes and stood there, unmoving, for a long time.
“Chief? Chief?” Xiao Zhang called out twice, his voice tinged with concern.
Jiang Lingfeng lowered his hand, straightened his posture, and waved dismissively at Xiao Zhang, signaling that he was fine.
Su Qingmeng went to the cultural troupe but still didn’t see Lin Wangbei. A few girls discussed visiting him together and casually invited Su Qingmeng along. They expected her to refuse, but to their surprise, she agreed without hesitation.
Lin Wangbei lived in the cultural troupe’s dormitory, though unlike the others who slept in shared bunks, he had a room to himself. When the girls arrived, he greeted them with a gentle smile. Only when no one was paying attention did his gaze drift toward Su Qingmeng.
Su Qingmeng met his look with a defiant stare. Her peach-blossom eyes held a spring-like allure, yet there was no tenderness in them, only the wild, untamed beauty of a flower in full bloom, making him itch to pluck it right then and there.
He smiled at her even more gently, his expression almost indulgent, which sent shivers down Su Qingmeng’s spine. Without waiting for the other girls, she turned and left alone.
When Teacher An saw her, he asked if Lin Wangbei was leaving Nanjiang Island. She nodded, and he breathed a sigh of relief.
After work, Jiang Lingfeng acted as if nothing had happened, bringing Yang Dongming over to cook and eat together. He left before nightfall, instructing Su Qingmeng only to lock the door securely.
The wind that night was stronger than the previous one, nearly extinguishing the kerosene lamp several times. Su Qingmeng glanced at the calendar and realized it was already May. The island was about to enter typhoon season, and the sea winds were growing fiercer than usual.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door, faint at first, almost drowned out by the howling wind, but it grew increasingly violent, as if someone were trying to smash the door to splinters.
“Who is it?” Su Qingmeng called out from inside.
There was no response, only the relentless pounding.
Clad in a pristine white nightgown and holding the kerosene lamp, she called out again.
This time, the knocking stopped. Then, with a sharp click, the lock gave way. Before anyone could push it open, the ferocious night wind burst the door inward. There, standing in the doorway, was Lin Wangbei. The wind whipped his clothes around him, making him appear even more gaunt and harmless, except for the gleaming surgical knife in his hand.
Lin Wangbei smiled calmly at Su Qingmeng, stepping inside as casually as if he were returning home.
Su Qingmeng remained remarkably calm. “What do you want?”
“I originally only wanted a pair of eyes, but Qingmeng, you are too beautiful.” He deftly pulled a syringe from his pocket with his left hand, and even with only one hand, he swiftly drew the liquid from the small vial into the syringe in an instant.
“With skills like that, why did you stop being a doctor?” Su Qingmeng mocked.
Lin Wangbei smiled good-naturedly. “It was too painful. You have no idea how much I wanted to destroy those ugly bodies lying before me.”
Su Qingmeng lowered her gaze. “So, you switched to digging out eyes instead?”
Lin Wangbei was both startled and delighted. “You really are clever. From the moment you performed that dance, I knew you were extraordinary. I used to only enjoy preserving beautiful eyes, but unfortunately, once removed from the body, they lost their beauty. I pondered over it for a long time, and it wasn’t until I met you that I understood what true beauty is. I finally realized that beautiful eyes deserve the most perfect vessel as their container.”
Su Qingmeng raised the kerosene lamp high, allowing Lin Wangbei to see her features clearly.
He stared at her with near obsession. The young woman, without a trace of makeup, had hair cascading like a waterfall. Even in the simplest nightgown, her appearance was nearly flawless.
This time, he had learned his lesson. He wouldn’t just extract Su Qingmeng’s eyes; he would preserve her entire body as a specimen, making her beauty eternal.
Lin Wangbei didn’t take the delicate Su Qingmeng seriously. He approached her recklessly, but she hurled the kerosene lamp at him with force. He dodged to the side, yet the scalding lamp still struck him, splashing onto his face.
His eyes filled with shock. Su Qingmeng hadn’t thrown it straight at him, whether by coincidence or because she had anticipated his evasion, he couldn’t tell.
The smell of burning skin filled the air as the kerosene seared his flesh. Lin Wangbei’s face twisted into a grim expression, and he lunged at Su Qingmeng. But before he could touch her, Jiang Lingfeng burst in with his men and pinned him to the ground.
Lin Wangbei was no match for the soldiers. Once pinned, he couldn’t get up again.
Struggling to lift his head from the floor, he saw Jiang Lingfeng shielding Su Qingmeng behind him. He could only catch a glimpse of one of her eyes, the warmth in them had turned to icy winter frost as they met his gaze. Truly beautiful.
He snarled, “Su Qingmeng, time will make you repulsive. You should remain as you are now, a goddess of beauty worshipped by the world.”
Jiang Lingfeng’s eyes were filled with a cold, murderous intent. He stepped forward and snatched the syringe from Lin Wangbei’s hand.
With a sharp crack, Lin Wangbei let out a agonized cry, his left arm had been broken as well.
Jiang Lingfeng waved his hand, signalling his men to take Lin Wangbei back to the military base.
The tall soldier stood up, his back radiating an intimidating aura that was quite frightening.
However, he didn’t turn to face Su Qingmeng immediately. Instead, he first extinguished the still-burning kerosene lamp on the floor, fetched a broom to clean up the debris, and carefully restored the items that had been knocked over during the commotion. Only then did he finally look at Su Qingmeng.
His tightly clenched jawline betrayed his foul mood. Su Qingmeng tilted her head to look at him, as if unaware of why he was so upset.
