- Chapter 79 - Scent of Flowers
Shang Shixing stood under the corridor for a while, sorting through the chaotic thoughts in her mind. Only after straightening them out did she turn to go back inside.
Just as she rounded the moon gate, she saw Shang Yufeng sitting by the railing, feeding the koi fish.
Lanke was sprawled nearby, stealthily pawing at the fish food in her bowl to eat.
Shang Shixing’s heart skipped a beat, but she reassured herself that her grandmother was too far away to have heard anything.
She walked over casually. “Grandma, isn’t it too late to feed them? Will the koi be able to digest it?”
“The temperature’s too high. They can have an extra meal,” Shang Yufeng replied.
Shang Shixing said nothing, waiting for her grandmother to finish before helping her back inside.
Shang Yufeng fed the fish at a leisurely pace.
Shang Shixing stepped forward to take the empty bowl.
Only then did Shang Yufeng wipe her hands with a handkerchief and, in passing, clean Lanke’s mouth.
“What was the name of that friend of Xiao Dai’s again?”
Shang Shixing feigned ignorance. “Which friend?”
“The Go teacher staying at Wei Yixian’s place.”
Shang Shixing said, “Shiyu. Lingchu has met her before. Don’t you remember, Grandma?”
Shang Yufeng studied her for a moment before asking, “Not Shang Shiyu?”
Without changing her expression, Shang Shixing replied, “Shang Shiyu was just a name I mentioned to you in passing during our last chat.”
“Shiyu” and “Shang Shiyu” though only one character apart carried entirely different meanings when Shang Yufeng first heard them.
“Shiyu” could be a surname, with the given name being Yu, Yu, or Yu. Shang Yufeng wouldn’t associate it with “Time Waits for No One.”
But with the Shang family name added, and the explicit use of the characters “Shi” and “Yu” from “Time Waits for No One,” it was hard for Shang Yufeng not to read into it.
She withdrew her gaze and sighed with feigned resignation. “Seems like once you’re old, everyone thinks they can fool you.”
She picked up Lanke and headed back inside, her back slightly hunched, her silhouette exuding an air of loneliness.
Shang Shixing wore a wry smile.
The old lady had watched too many melodramas, she was putting her acting skills to good use.
–
Not long after ending the call with her elder sister, Shang Shiqian received another phone call.
This time, it was Weng Qizheng.
Shang Shiqian counted the days, the University Go Championship had already concluded, so Weng Qizheng was likely calling to share the results.
Sure enough, Weng Qizheng’s excitement was palpable even through the phone.
The results of this Go tournament were groundbreaking for East City University.
A female student had won the women’s individual championship, a male student had taken third place in the men’s individual division, and the remaining students, though they hadn’t claimed the top spot, had advanced to the quarterfinals.
The championship awarded the top eight, meaning all of East City University’s participating students had earned prizes.
Moreover, due to the high points accumulated by the two students who had placed in the top three, East City University’s overall team score surpassed the second-place team by two points, securing the team championship.
This was the best result East City University had ever achieved in the history of the University Go Championship.
The organizers had invested heavily in promoting the event, and as the coach of the winning team, Weng Qizheng naturally drew attention from the Go community.
Her past identity as a world champion was widely publicized, and her Go school received a surge in inquiries and enrollment applications.
If not for these matters delaying her for a few days, she would have called Shang Shiqian to share the good news the moment the results were announced.
Weng Qizheng directly transferred a 2,000 yuan bonus to Shang Shiqian and invited her to attend the celebration banquet.
Considering her recent busy schedule, Shang Shiqian declined: “I’m very happy they’ve achieved such success, but unfortunately, I’m tied up with miscellaneous tasks and can’t be there to celebrate with them. Please convey my congratulations to them, Fifth-Dan Weng.”
“Alright.” Weng Qizheng knew her temperament and didn’t press further.
In a car parked not far away.
Pu Feifei glanced at the rearview mirror and asked, “President Wei, should I get out and call Xiao Shang?”
Shang Shiqian had recently become quite the social butterfly.
The most obvious sign was the increase in incoming calls and visitors.
This change had been gradual, but Pu Feifei still remembered Shang Shiqian from just over a month ago someone with nothing, who barely even needed a phone.
She was both pleased that Shang Shiqian’s social circle had expanded and her life had grown richer, and wistful for Wei Yixian, who couldn’t even get through to her on the phone right now.
Xiao Shang was just too popular.
Wei Yixian snapped out of her thoughts and gave a soft “Mm.”
Pu Feifei got out of the car.
Wei Yixian turned to look at the figure outside.
The white LED lights at the restaurant entrance illuminated her, as if she were bathed in sunlight.
No, it was more accurate to say she had always been radiant.
Even after losing everything and starting over, her brilliance couldn’t be dimmed.
People would naturally gather around her again. Gradually, her life would no longer revolve solely around Go and her lover.
Family, friends, mentors, rivals.
When that time came, how much space would remain in her heart for a lover?
A flicker of struggle passed through Wei Yixian’s eyes, but she ultimately suppressed those dark thoughts.
Before long, Shang Shiqian noticed them.
After hanging up the phone, Shang Shiqian climbed into the car.
She was about to kiss Wei Yixian when she suddenly remembered she hadn’t rinsed her mouth after dinner, so she settled for holding Wei Yixian’s hand instead.
“Did you come all this way just to pick me up?” Shang Shiqian asked.
Wei Yixian lifted her gaze and said, “I just got off work. Heard you hadn’t gone home after dinner and were strolling around, so I swung by on my way.”
“So you haven’t had dinner yet?”
“Not hungry yet.”
Shang Shiqian turned to Pu Feifei. “Sister Pu, what ingredients do we have at home?”
“Plenty.”
Shang Shiqian then asked Wei Yixian, “What would you like? I’ll cook for you.”
“Cheese lobster noodles?”
“Let’s try something different.” Shang Shiqian hadn’t forgotten how poorly her last attempt at lobster had turned out.
A faint smile finally appeared in Wei Yixian’s eyes. “But that’s exactly what I want. Besides, I had someone switch to a different type of lobster.”
Since it was for Wei Yixian, Shang Shiqian naturally deferred to her preference. “Alright, then we’ll make that.”
Passing by a flower shop, Shang Shiqian asked Pu Feifei to pull over, then bought a bouquet and presented it to Wei Yixian.
Wei Yixian was surprised. “Why the sudden flowers?”
Shang Shiqian couldn’t help sharing her excitement. “I just received a 2,000 yuan bonus!”
Wei Yixian: “…”
She wouldn’t have batted an eye at receiving 20 million herself, yet here was Shang Shiqian, overjoyed by a mere 2,000.
But of course, it wasn’t the money that delighted her, it was what the bonus represented: the success of her Go students.
Wei Yixian lightly touched the white violets, still glistening with artificially sprayed droplets. “Do you always buy me flowers when you get a bonus?”
Shang Shiqian replied, “I’d buy them for you even without a bonus.”
She suddenly realized that she and Wei Yixian were a couple wasn’t it perfectly normal for lovers to buy flowers for each other?
If she wanted to give them, she would. There was no need to wait for a special occasion.
Wei Yixian lowered her head slightly to smell the flowers, and the strands of hair tucked behind her ear slipped loose, obscuring the faint curve of her lips.
–
Wednesday evening.
After work, Wei Yixian arrived at an upscale club.
It was a bar with a KTV, built by the riverside in a standalone commercial building spanning six floors.
The first floor housed a two-story duplex lobby for the club;
The second and third floors were comprehensive bars, divided into several counters by liquor type;
The fourth floor was reserved for KTV private rooms;
The fifth and sixth floors were VIP-exclusive areas, with the sixth floor even featuring an open-air swimming pool.
Wei Yixian went straight to the sixth floor, where several of her friends had already gathered.
Most of these friends were people she’d met during her “exile.” Beyond sharing professional and personal interests, they had also helped her a great deal.
However, they were usually based in Harbor City or Garden Country, so this rare gathering was why Wei Yixian hadn’t turned down the invitation.
After exchanging pleasantries, one friend chided her, “I’ve been asking you to play tennis lately, but you never come out.”
Wei Yixian was about to plead work commitments when another friend teased, “Don’t you know? Dark is in a relationship now. Of course, she’d rather spend time with her girlfriend.”
“Dark” was the English nickname they’d given Wei Yixian, inspired by the Dark Warrior.
Naturally, each of them had their own codenames too.
“Wait, wasn’t that just a rumor?”
As soon as the question was asked, all eyes turned to Wei Yixian, waiting for her to clarify.
After a moment’s thought, Wei Yixian said, “It’s not a rumor.”
“Wow! Who is it?”
Wei Yixian replied, “She’s not part of our circle.”
Just then, a voice chimed in from the doorway: “Do we have the honor of meeting her?”
The newcomer was none other than Yin Zaishui.
“Water!”
The finance world wasn’t exactly vast, and as it happened, some in the room also knew Yin Zaishui.
Wei Yixian glanced at the friend who had organized the gathering.
The woman shrugged, indicating she had no idea either.
It was obvious to anyone that Yin Zaishui had been invited by the friend who had just greeted her.
Sure enough, the friend explained the reason for Yin Zaishui’s presence.
Although Yin Zaishui and Wei Yixian were ex-lovers, making the situation slightly awkward, Yin Zaishui had recently assisted Wei Yixian significantly with the Zhou Ran Group acquisition case. Thus, Wei Yixian didn’t object.
However, regarding Shang Shiqian, Wei Yixian said, “There will be a chance, but not now.”
A friend joked, “What, are you saving that introduction for your wedding?”
Wei Yixian smiled faintly. “Maybe?”
With Yin Zaishui’s arrival, the gathering shifted from a private affair to a more business-oriented discussion and Wei Yixian refrained from sharing much about her personal life.
She stayed only a little over an hour.
When she received a text from Shang Shiqian, her lips curved slightly. “I have something to attend to, so I’ll take my leave. Put tonight’s expenses on my tab.”
After she left, Yin Zaishui didn’t follow. Instead, she stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching everything unfold at the club’s entrance.
Soon enough, Wei Yixian’s figure emerged from the doorway.
A woman stepped out of the car and took the initiative to approach, holding Wei Yixian’s hand.
Though their words couldn’t be heard and their expressions were unclear, one could sense an unusual happiness radiating from Wei Yixian.
The woman who had invited Yin Zaishui over said, “You shouldn’t have come back, because there’s no place left for you by Wei Yixian’s side. Isn’t that, right?”
Yin Zaishui said nothing, simply downing the wine in her glass in one go.
President Wei (legal trouble edition): Wants to keep his wife confined by his side, hidden away.
Shang Si: Forced love?
