- Chapter 71 - Emptiness
Outside the hospital room.
Wei Yixian listened to the sounds coming from inside, already picturing the scene of the sisters reuniting.
She faintly let out a sigh of relief.
So Shang Shiqian could reveal her true identity after all.
The reason she had rushed over was precisely because she feared Shang Shiqian might not be able to handle the situation and would expose her identity, incurring the system’s punishment.
She had planned to step in at the critical moment to shoulder all the blame and keep Shang Shiqian’s disguise intact.
Now, she hadn’t heard any announcements from the system.
It must have been purely because Shang Shiqian didn’t dare to acknowledge them, or perhaps didn’t know how to explain her resurrection, that she chose to maintain her disguise.
The heavy shackles in her heart finally loosened, but what followed was an overwhelming sense of emptiness.
Without the constraints of the disguise and with Shang Shiqian reunited with her family, would she still need Wei Yixian?
Chu Fei and Ying Jia, who had been sent away earlier, watched Wei Yixian standing motionless at the door, neither knocking nor making any move, their curiosity gnawing at them.
Just who was this “Little Shang”?
Could she be a runaway heiress of the Shang family?
And why had Wei Yixian, who had seemed so indifferent earlier, suddenly rushed here?
Finally, the statue-like Wei Yixian moved.
She stepped away from the hospital room door, her expression not only grim but her steps unsteady, making one worry she might collapse at any moment.
Fortunately, they were in a hospital.
Wei Yixian said to them, “Continue protecting her until.”
Until what? Chu Fei and Ying Jia held their breath.
A trace of melancholy flickered in Wei Yixian’s eyes. “Until she says she no longer needs you, then you can return.”
With that, Wei Yixian left.
Ying Jia said, “If Little Shang is from the Shang family and returns to them, she definitely won’t need our protection anymore, right?”
Chu Fei remained silent.
Though she didn’t know the full story, if Wei Yixian was worried that “Shang Shiyu” wouldn’t return to Tianhao Garden after reuniting with her family, Chu Fei thought that concern was unnecessary.
As Chu Fei had predicted.
When Shang Shixing said, “Let’s go home,” and prepared to take Shang Shiqian back to the Shang family, Shang Shiqian’s reaction took Shang Shixing by surprise.
She said, “Eldest Sister, can I not go back just yet?”
Shang Shixing’s expression turned stern. “If not home, where do you want to go?”
“I promised Wei Yixian we’d have dinner together. She’s probably still waiting for me.”
At the mention of Wei Yixian, though Shang Shixing didn’t openly show her disdain like Shang Xiaowu, she couldn’t help but frown.
“Does Wei Yixian know your identity?”
Shang Shiqian shook her head. “She doesn’t know.”
“Are you sure she doesn’t know?”
“She probably sees me the same way Shang Xiaowu does, just a substitute.”
Shang Shixing: …
How can you say something so heartbreaking so calmly?
Suddenly, Shang Shiqian’s phone rang.
She pointed at the caller ID. “Speak of the devil.”
Shang Shixing took the phone, swiped to answer, and put it on speaker.
Shang Xiaowu’s voice immediately blared out: “Little Substitute, are you still at the hospital?”
Shang Shixing replied expressionlessly, “She’s here!”
“Run! I think Eldest Sister is,” Shang Xiaowu, about to spill the beans, suddenly realized the voice wasn’t Shang Shiqian’s. She froze. “E-Eldest Sister!?”
“What about me?” Shang Shixing asked.
Without another word, Shang Xiaowu hung up.
The anger Shang Shixing had barely suppressed flared up again, as if someone had poured oil on the fire.
If not for Shang Xiaowu’s call, she might have forgotten she had to deal with her first upon returning home!
Shang Shiqian trembled in fear.
Eight years later, Eldest Sister was even more like a strict school principal.
Their mothers were often busy with work, so Shang Shixing, like the eldest daughters in most families, had shouldered the responsibility of helping the elders take care of her younger sisters from a young age.
Though she was only a few years older, she always wore that stern, overly mature expression.
Third Sister Shang Zhaoyan and Shang Xiaowu were both terrified of her.
Second Sister Shang Zhaotang, being only a year younger, had rebelled against her authority. After losing a fight, both were punished by their grandmother to pick up trash with sanitation workers at a nearby scenic spot. Not wanting to repeat the experience, Shang Zhaotang became much more obedient.
As for Shang Shiqian, since she rarely caused trouble, she seldom faced Shang Shixing’s wrath.
But that didn’t mean she wasn’t afraid of her when angry.
Shang Shixing hung up and scrutinized Shang Shiqian. “You’re sure you won’t come back with me?”
“Grandmother taught us to finish what we start. Eight years ago, I didn’t get to say goodbye to this world. Now, I can’t just disappear without a word again.”
Shang Shiqian would return to the Shang family, just not now.
Shang Shixing’s heart ached sharply.
Eight years ago, her younger sister had left home happily to prepare for the Center Game Tournament, only to never return.
They had hoped the kidnappers were only after money because, in typical kidnappings, the criminals would call the family and let them hear the victim’s voice.
But after waiting all night, what they received was news of her death.
Remembering it still pained her deeply.
Shang Shixing had so much to say, so many questions to ask.
But her sister was truly standing before her, alive not an illusion or a shattered dream.
There would be time later to uncover the full story.
Besides, the shock of her resurrection was overwhelming. She needed time to process.
The rest of the family still didn’t know. She had to carefully consider how to handle this.
Having made up her mind, Shang Shixing said, “I respect your choice. But first, you’re coming with me for a full medical checkup.”
Shang Shiqian didn’t question Shang Shixing’s motives. Even if the checkup was to verify her DNA, it only proved her eldest sister’s intelligence was still sharp. She was overjoyed, not resentful.
“It’s already evening. Won’t most hospital departments be closed?”
Shang Shixing said, “Getting them to work overtime is just a matter of a word.”
Shang Shiqian: …
Heavens, why hadn’t she noticed before her rebirth that everyone around her had the makings of a domineering CEO?
Or was it that once people reached middle age, the CEO aura just naturally emerged?
Though she grumbled inwardly, Shang Shiqian obediently followed her eldest sister’s arrangements for a full physical.
Even with expedited processing, the results would take two or three days. After the checkup, Shang Shiqian didn’t linger at the hospital.
During this time, she had learned about Yu Yifei’s condition today was just a follow-up visit, and after changing his ostomy bag, he had left.
The reason he’d been given a room was part of Shang Shixing’s plan to catch the culprit.
Yu Yifei had no idea of Shang Shixing’s intentions, nor that the person he’d played against today was the student whose death he had most regretted, Shang Shiqian.
By the time Shang Shiqian returned to Tianhao Garden, it was almost 10 p.m.
“Ah!” Shang Shiqian smacked her forehead.
“What’s wrong?” Shang Shixing, who had personally escorted her back, asked worriedly.
“I forgot to tell Wei Yixian. It’s so late. She couldn’t have been waiting for me all this time, could she?”
Amid the reunion with her family, she’d forgotten to inform her.
Shang Shixing shot her a glance.
Unable to resist stirring the pot: “You were gone so long, and she didn’t even call to check on you.”
She held back the more cutting remark.
Though DNA results weren’t in yet, Shang Shixing was already convinced this was her younger sister.
She couldn’t bear to tell Shang Shiqian that Wei Yixian’s lack of initiative spoke volumes about her place in Wei Yixian’s heart.
Shang Shiqian chuckled. “She’s busy with work. It’s normal.”
Shang Shixing: …
Was my sister always this much of a lovesick fool?
For a moment, she doubted again whether this was really Shang Shiqian.
–
The villa was dark, save for the floodlights illuminating the path from the gate to the front door.
The lights couldn’t speak.
But Shang Shiqian understood, this arrangement meant Wei Yixian was waiting for her return.
Afraid the path would be too dark, she had left a light to guide her home.
Entering and turning on the lights, the house was as quiet and cold as ever.
Shang Shiqian had grown used to the living room being merely decorative.
She headed to the bar area and, luckily, didn’t see Wei Yixian.
Then the staircase lights flickered on, and Wei Yixian, clad in a nightgown, appeared at the top.
Staring at Shang Shiqian, she wondered if she’d drunk too much and was hallucinating.
“Why are you?” Why are you back?
Her alcohol-fogged mind quickly caught up, and she changed her question: “Why are you back so late?”
Guiltily, Shang Shiqian said, “I just found out the Go Sage has cancer. I rushed to see him, and he held my hand, talking. I forgot about our dinner plans. I’m sorry.”
Wei Yixian knew she wasn’t telling the whole truth, but she wasn’t angry at all.
Shang Shiqian asked, “Have you eaten?”
Wei Yixian shook her head.
“Me neither. I’m starving. I’m going to make some late-night snacks. Want some?”
“Mm.” Wei Yixian nodded.
Shang Shiqian went to raid the fridge.
Wei Yixian was particular about fresh, clean food, so ingredients were rarely kept overnight. Leftovers were usually taken home by the chef or maids.
But tonight, Shang Shiqian was surprised to find the fridge well-stocked.
“Are these all for tonight’s dinner?” she asked Wei Yixian, who was leaning against the fridge.
Wei Yixian’s face was flushed, and the scent of alcohol on her confirmed she’d been drinking.
Luckily, the wine’s aroma wasn’t as strong as whiskey or brandy.
“Mm.” Wei Yixian stared intently at her.
Shang Shiqian: …
So that’s why Wei Yixian hadn’t called, she’d been sulking.
Probably so angry she’d skipped dinner and just drank!
With a sigh, Shang Shiqian pulled out some ingredients.
Filet mignon, she couldn’t cook it. Pass.
Bird’s nest, she couldn’t prepare it. Pass.
Gooseneck barnacles disgusting. Pass.
Alba white truffles, she only knew how to make chicken and mushroom stew. Better not ruin it.
After much deliberation, she settled on two live lobsters and decided to make lobster congee.
But these lobsters looked expensive. What if she ruined them?
Maybe she should call the chef for advice?
As she pondered, someone hugged her from behind.
Wei Yixian rested her forehead against Shang Shiqian’s shoulder, murmuring drunkenly, “I’m glad you’re back.”
Shang Xiaowu (pointing accusingly): Even Sister Chu knew I’d come back. Did you really have so little faith in me?
Wei Yixian: )
Meanwhile, at the Shang residence.
Shang Xiaowu was hopping around frantically: Aah, Eldest Sister, I really didn’t mean to keep it from you! Please spare me.
