- Chapter 67 - Name
Shang Shixing hadn’t originally planned to dig deep into the identity and background of “Shiyu.”
Yet a vague figure had drawn her into a forest shrouded in mist.
To see that figure clearly, she first had to dispel the fog.
Who was Shiyu?
The connection between Shang Xiaowu, Xiao Luomeng, and Chen Yixun was Shiyu.
Her improved attitude toward Wei Yixian was also because of Shiyu.
This in itself was an unusual signal.
In the office, when Chen Yixun saw the photo of Shang Shiqian, her shocked expression and the question she asked were quite thought-provoking.
Chen Yixun clearly recognized the Shang Shiqian in the photo.
But she had posed a contradictory and dissonant question, “Who is this?”
She didn’t know Shang Shiqian, yet she recognized “Shang Shiqian”?
If she truly knew “Shang Shiqian,” it could only be that she had seen Shang Shiqian’s photo somewhere else.
But having seen the photo, there was no reason she wouldn’t know that Shang Shiqian was the fourth daughter of the Shang family.
Moreover, if she had only seen Shang Shiqian’s photo, she wouldn’t have been so distraught and asked whether Shang Shiqian had a twin.
Therefore, Shang Shixing speculated that Chen Yixun might know someone who looked very much like Shang Shiqian but wasn’t named Shang Shiqian.
Taking into account Shang Xiaowu’s unusual behavior, Shang Shixing had no choice but to add “Shiyu” to the list of suspects.
“Chairman Shang, it’s been a while since we last spoke. Congratulations on winning the East City Charity Award.”
Weng Qizheng was very surprised to receive Shang Shixing’s call.
Although they knew each other and had exchanged contact information, they didn’t usually interact.
At most, they might communicate once or twice a year regarding matters related to the East City University Go Room.
Lately, there had been no issues with the Go Room, so she couldn’t fathom why Shang Shixing was contacting her at this time.
“Thank you, Professor Weng,” Shang Shixing said with dignified politeness. “I heard you’re leading a team to the University Go Championship. I wish your students a swift victory.”
Weng Qizheng laughed. “I appreciate your kind words.”
After the pleasantries, Shang Shixing got to the point: “I heard you once hired a Go expert to coach the students?”
“Oh, you mean Shang Shiyu?”
Shang Shixing’s thoughts faltered, and her expression grew more serious.
“Her name is Shang Shiyu?”
“Yes. Is there something you need from her?”
Shang Shixing collected herself. “Recently, my younger sister has been going through some things, and she won’t talk about it. I heard she’s friends with Shang Shiyu, so I wanted to ask Shang Shiyu for some insight. Do you happen to know where she is now?”
This was a case of feigning ignorance.
Shang Xiaowu had stayed overnight at Wei Yixian’s place last time, which meant Shang Shiyu lived there Shang Xiaowu certainly wouldn’t have stayed over just for Wei Yixian.
Weng Qizheng didn’t detect anything amiss and, trusting Shang Shixing’s character, replied straightforwardly, “She used to live in my small house, but she moved out last Friday after her coaching work ended. I’m not sure where she’s living now. However, I have her contact information. I can send it to you if you need it.”
“Thank you.”
After obtaining the phone number, Shang Shixing asked a friend to look into it.
The number was registered to Wei Yixian.
Shang Shixing murmured to herself, “Why would it be ‘Shang Shiyu’?”
Shang Yufeng happened to pass by and overheard her muttering. “Why are you suddenly mentioning that name?”
Shang Shixing was startled and instinctively asked, “Grandma, you know her too?”
“Know who?”
Shang Shixing snapped back to her senses and countered, “Grandma, have you heard the name Shang Shiyu?”
Shang Yufeng smiled and said, “Your sisters’ names were decided even before your mothers planned to have children.
“Originally, four names were prepared Shixing from ‘keeping pace with the times,’ Shiqian from ‘times have changed,’ Shidai from ‘time waits for no one,’ and Shiyu from ‘time waits for no one.’
“But after giving birth to Shidai, your mothers decided not to have any more children, so the name Shiyu was never used.”
Shang Shixing smiled faintly, “No wonder the name sounds somewhat familiar.”
“‘Time waits for no one’ and ‘time waits for no one’ have similar meanings, so after your mom gave birth to Xiao Dai, she couldn’t decide which name to use.
“At the time, Xiao Qian was nearby and thought ‘Dai’ was the character for ‘dull,’ so she said, ‘The sleeping sister looks dull, let’s name her Shi Dai.’
“And that’s how Shidai’s name was settled.”
Shang Shixing was in elementary school at the time and was at school, so she didn’t know about this little episode.
“Grandma, do many people know about this?”
“It’s not an important matter, so we never mentioned it to outsiders.”
Since Shang Shiqian had just been brought up, Shang Yufeng added, “Xiao Qian’s birthday is coming up soon.”
Most families choose Qingming Festival, Chongyang Festival, or the anniversary of a loved one’s death to pay respects to the deceased.
Few people choose to commemorate on the birthday of the departed.
The Shang family is different.
Valuing familial bonds, they attach great importance to such occasions.
However, the Shang family doesn’t plan to hold any high-profile memorial events. They will simply visit the cemetery as usual and then have a light lunch together as a family upon returning.
Shang Yunyu’s experiment is at a critical stage and she can’t make it back, but Zhu Fu has already taken leave and will fly back a day early.
Preparing offerings and handling the tomb-sweeping has always been Shang Shixing’s responsibility, and this year is no exception.
Shang Yufeng has full confidence in Shang Shixing’s ability to handle things and, without asking any questions, took the cat leash and went out for a walk with Lanke.
Shang Shixing called the cemetery’s security office, intending to ask the old security guard to clean up in advance.
Unexpectedly, the old guard who answered the phone hemmed and hawed, first saying he was sick, then claiming he had encountered something supernatural and wanted to resign.
In the end, the old guard’s granddaughter, Xiao Wu, took the call and explained the situation on his behalf: “Director, my grandfather fell recently and has been resting at home these days. My father is standing in for him at the cemetery.”
Shang Shixing had heard too many people claiming to have encountered supernatural phenomena lately, and she keenly sensed that the old guard wasn’t just delirious from illness and talking nonsense.
She said, “A bone injury takes a hundred days to heal. This is a work-related injury. I’d like to visit him would that be convenient?”
“Of course.”
After hanging up, Shang Shixing had her assistant buy some fruit, and they drove together to the old guard’s home.
The old guard’s injuries weren’t serious just superficial wounds but his mental state didn’t look good. As soon as he saw Shang Shixing, he said he wanted to resign.
But when asked about the supernatural encounter, he hesitated and seemed to be hiding something.
“Uncle Wu, you’ve been guarding our Shang family’s cemetery for over a decade. Is there anything you can’t say directly?” Shang Shixing asked.
This successfully broke down the old guard’s defenses, and he explained the whole story.
It turned out his fall had happened back in June.
That day, while backing up the surveillance footage from the cemetery, the Shang family cemetery had two cameras installed at the entrance, and the recordings were overwritten every month, so backups were made monthly, he unexpectedly discovered that on May 21st, a disheveled female ghost had drifted out of the cemetery and crawled out through the security booth.
The more he thought about it, the more frightened he became.
During his night shift, his mind was hazy, and he failed to see the stone steps clearly, stumbling and falling.
Fortunately, he only suffered scraped skin and no broken bones.
But he believed he had been tripped by the female ghost.
“I can’t continue with this job anymore.” Once this thought emerged, it wouldn’t stop.
He wanted to resign to Shang Shixing, but his son stopped him, saying it wasn’t a ghost at all, but someone had infiltrated the Shang family cemetery.
In the past, there had been incidents where business rivals or criminals tried to sabotage the tombs of the Shang ancestors to bring about the family’s decline or harm their descendants.
That’s why the Shang family had enclosed the cemetery and hired specialized tomb guards to monitor it.
If the Shang family found out about this, the old security guard would surely be held accountable for negligence.
His job paid well with little work, essentially equivalent to the Shang family providing for his retirement.
The old guard’s idle son came up with a terrible idea, he would take over the night shift for his father, inspect the entire cemetery from top to bottom, and after resolving any issues, the old guard could return to work.
So the old guard went home to rest.
But he couldn’t feel at ease, always feeling as if a ghost had followed him home.
Because he often experienced sleep paralysis.
Sometimes when he got up at night, he found the faucet running.
His granddaughter, Xiao Wu, interjected, “Grandpa has a poor memory; he forgets to turn off the faucet after washing his hands in the bathroom.”
“Nonsense!” the old guard retorted angrily.
But Shang Shixing had no time to hold him accountable or listen to their argument over whether the faucet was left on by a person or turned on by a ghost in the middle of the night.
She asked, “Where is the backup footage?”
The old guard’s expression grew even more troubled.
Xiao Wu spoke up before he could, “It’s on the computer; I’ll find it for you.”
The old guard looked at her in surprise.
Xiao Wu took out her laptop, opened a folder containing hundreds of gigabytes of video files, all surveillance recordings.
“During which time period did you see the ghost?” Shang Shixing asked.
The old guard snapped back to reality, thought for a moment, and said uncertainly, “Around four or five in the morning.”
Shang Shixing located the video by its time label and started watching.
The old guard pulled Xiao Wu aside and whispered, “Didn’t your dad delete the footage?”
Xiao Wu glanced at Shang Shixing, who was fully absorbed in reviewing the surveillance, and said, “I never agreed with Dad’s falsification. If the Shang family found out, both you and Dad would be questioned. I had to leave a way out for our family, so I saved a copy before he deleted it. See, Chairman Shang has come knocking, hasn’t she!”
The old guard felt guilty but also relieved that his granddaughter was clever; otherwise, he really wouldn’t be able to explain his encounter with the supernatural.
Suddenly, Shang Shixing stood up abruptly.
Her face showed shock, astonishment, and even a dazed expression.
The old guard said to Xiao Wu, “Look, even the chairman is scared.”
Xiao Wu was speechless: The chairman’s expression didn’t look like fear at all.
Instead, it seemed as if she had seen something that struck deep into her soul.
Xiao Wu was about to speak when Shang Shixing composed her expression and said to the assistant, “Send this video to my email, export all the other videos as well, and delete the backup from this computer.”
As Shang Shixing was leaving, she told Xiao Wu, “You handled this very well.”
Only after she had walked far away did the old security guard ask, “What did the Chairperson mean by that?”
Xiao Wu, sweating profusely, said, “She overheard our conversation.”
Shang Shixing would inevitably deal with the old security guard’s son, but for now, she had to go verify one thing first.
