- Chapter 64 - Girlfriend
The sudden wail of police sirens pierced the night sky over East City.
It lasted until the faint light of dawn.
A perimeter was set up in the woods behind a primary school called Mingzhong Third Village in the eastern suburbs.
When Wei Yixian arrived, she overheard an officer reporting:
“We’ve conducted preliminary interviews with the school administration. Chen Baoming used to work as a security guard here, but he was fired due to frequent absenteeism, tardiness, and unauthorized shift swaps over the past two weeks, which greatly displeased the school. However, at some point, he managed to make a spare key for the abandoned granary, suggesting premeditated murder.”
The captain of the investigative unit in charge of the case spotted Wei Yixian and approached her. “Ms. Wei, regarding your wife, Ms. Shang,”
“Where is she?”
No sooner had Wei Yixian spoken than officers emerged from the woods carrying a body bag.
The captain looked at her with pity and unzipped the bag, revealing a lifeless face.
Wei Yixian stared fixedly.
At that moment, the captain thought she resembled a withered tree, drained of vitality.
Soon, Wei Yixian was roughly shoved aside by an urgent, forceful presence.
The Shang family had arrived.
–
Shang Shiqian jolted awake from the nightmare.
She took a moment to steady herself, suppressing the violent pounding of her heart.
In the nearly fifty days since her rebirth, this was the first time she had dreamed of the events leading to her death.
It wasn’t that she was indifferent rather, when subjected to severe trauma, the brain’s avoidance mechanisms had subconsciously dulled those memories.
After all, slowly feeling the life drain from her body, with her will to survive repeatedly sparking hope that someone would come to her rescue, only for that hope to be crushed again and again such an experience was far from pleasant.
Perhaps tonight’s crisis had triggered the memory, causing it to resurface as a nightmare.
Suddenly, a cold hand rested on the back of Shang Shiqian’s hand.
She flinched, instinctively jerking away before rolling to the edge of the bed.
But she quickly realized the hand belonged to Wei Yixian.
“Jimmy, turn on the lights.”
The room brightened as the lights flickered on.
Wei Yixian said nothing, silently observing Shang Shiqian’s “abnormal” behavior.
Shang Shiqian slowly inched back, awkwardly muttering, “Had a nightmare.”
Wei Yixian reached out, pressing her fingers to Shang Shiqian’s neck.
The icy touch made her stiffen, but she resisted the urge to swat the hand away this time.
Wei Yixian remarked, “You’re drenched in sweat.”
Shang Shiqian knew, her pajamas were soaked.
“I’ll take a shower and change,” she said.
She hadn’t forgotten how much Wei Yixian valued cleanliness. Even when sick with the flu, she’d risk a fever just to wash up.
So Wei Yixian probably wouldn’t want to lie next to someone sticky with sweat.
Unexpectedly, Wei Yixian said, “Shower in the morning. Just wipe off and change for now.”
As Shang Shiqian moved toward the wardrobe to grab fresh clothes, Wei Yixian followed. “Let me help you dry off.”
“Huh? No need, I can manage.”
“You wiped my sweat plenty when I was sick, didn’t you?”
Shang Shiqian flushed. “That’s different!”
Back then, she had only dabbed at non-sensitive areas like Wei Yixian’s forehead and the hollow of her neck.
“It’s no different.”
Unable to argue, Shang Shiqian reluctantly handed her the towel.
Truthfully, once she left the blankets, the air conditioning had already cooled her down, leaving far less sweat to wipe away.
However, if she didn’t wipe herself down with water again, the sweat would leave an odor, so Wei Yixian fetched a basin of warm water.
This was the first time Shang Shiqian had undressed in front of Wei Yixian, and she felt shy.
But the lingering fear from the nightmare and today’s events left her no room to dwell on embarrassment.
The warm, damp towel glided over her neck and back, finally washing away that sticky sensation.
Suddenly, Shang Shiqian felt Wei Yixian’s fingers brush against her neck.
She wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but Wei Yixian’s touch lingered precisely over her carotid artery.
The fingertips paused for only a moment before trailing along the curve of her shoulder.
Shang Shiqian’s attention was completely diverted, and her ears quietly flushed red.
“Done?” she asked.
Wei Yixian tapped her elbow. “Lift your arm.”
Shang Shiqian’s entire face turned crimson. “Ahem, just wipe my back. I’ll handle the rest.”
With that, she hastily pulled her pajamas back on and dashed into the bathroom.
A while later, she hurried out again, snatching the towel and basin right out of Wei Yixian’s hands.
Inside the bathroom, she wiped herself down thoroughly until her body temperature cooled, emerging fresh and clean.
Meanwhile, Wei Yixian had gone downstairs and returned with a bottle of red wine.
“A drink? It’ll help you sleep.”
For once, Shang Shiqian didn’t refuse.
Starting tomorrow, she wouldn’t have to go to East City University, so sleeping in a little wouldn’t hurt.
The wine wasn’t strong. After the salty, bitter, and sour flavors took turns on her tongue, a sweet, lingering aftertaste remained.
Wei Yixian said, “They likely attacked you because of me. If you have any thoughts or feelings about it, let them out.”
Shang Shiqian had no thoughts, much less resentment.
She replied, “Honestly, I’ve been mentally prepared for this, so don’t worry about it.”
“‘Mentally prepared’, you mean when you warned me to be cautious of the Zhou family?”
Shang Shiqian grinned cheekily. “Yeah. If you cross them, they might retaliate by targeting someone you care about. So, in their eyes, I count as someone you care about, right?”
Wei Yixian: …
Was this her way of coping?
She studied Shang Shiqian for a moment before chuckling. “You’re not wrong, but there’s one thing I should correct.”
“It’s not just in their eyes. In my heart, you’re the person I care about most.”
Perhaps it was the alcohol, but hearing these stirring words made Shang Shiqian feel dizzy, her heart soaring.
“Wei Yixian, (after being reborn) meeting you again is the best thing that could’ve happened.” Shang Shiqian set down her glass, boldly cupped Wei Yixian’s face, and kissed her.
After pulling away, she asked, puzzled, “Wait, you weren’t asleep? How did you know I woke up?”
Wei Yixian said casually, “Oh, I had a nightmare too.”
“Ah, was it scary?”
Wei Yixian nodded. “Yes, terrifying.”
“If it woke you up, it must’ve been really bad.”
Wei Yixian added, “Too bad I didn’t sweat.”
Shang Shiqian: ?
What’s there to regret about that?
She nonchalantly took the glass from Wei Yixian’s hand and placed it on the nightstand. “Alright, it’s late. Let’s sleep.”
They lay back down, and after having Jimmy turn off most of the lights, only a dim bedside lamp remained.
Shang Shiqian asked, “Wei Yixian, can I hold you while we sleep?”
Wei Yixian didn’t answer but responded with action.
She nestled into Shang Shiqian’s embrace and placed Shang Shiqian’s hand on her waist.
Shang Shiqian tightened her hold, satisfied. “Nice and cool.”
Wei Yixian: “…”
Shang Shiqian asked again, “Are you hot?”
Wei Yixian replied, “The temperature is just right.”
Shang Shiqian fell silent.
She stared blankly at the outline of Wei Yixian’s face, traced by the interplay of light and shadow.
Suddenly, a surge of unwillingness welled up in her heart.
She knew this emotion might have stemmed from the moment she was killed, only suppressed after her rebirth.
Now, as memories resurfaced, this feeling reemerged.
Shang Xiaowu’s grievances, Wei Yixian’s affection, and unfinished ambitions ignited her will to survive.
She wanted to reunite with her family, stay by Wei Yixian’s side for a long time, and return to the chess world.
But doing so would inevitably taint the purity of her feelings for Wei Yixian.
After wrestling with her conscience for a while, Shang Shiqian decided to lower her moral standards.
She summoned the system: [Little Black System, I’ve made up my mind, I’m going to do missions!]
The system was thrilled by her enthusiasm and rewarded her with digital fireworks: [Praise-worthy!]
[Now, I’m assigning you an important task!]
[Mhm, go ahead, Host.]
Shang Shiqian declared with utmost solemnity: [Every day, you must knock the digital wooden fish 100 times for me to accumulate virtue! The morality I lack elsewhere, I’ll make up for here!]
System: “…”
Wei Yixian: “…”
Are you trying to carve virtue into a sinking boat?
After shedding her psychological burden, Shang Shiqian felt much better.
She tentatively whispered, “Wei Yixian.”
Wei Yixian opened her eyes, looking at her with an amused expression. “Hmm?”
“Can you be my girlfriend for a year?”
Wei Yixian feigned ignorance. “Why just a year?”
“Because you only recharged a year’s worth of phone credit?”
In the darkness, the air fell silent for several seconds.
Wei Yixian asked, “If I recharge more, can I be your girlfriend forever?”
“Theoretically, yes.”
“Then how do I recharge?”
Shang Shiqian shamelessly replied, “Probably by loving me. Very, very much.”
Wei Yixian smiled. “Okay.”
Shang Shiqian: “…”
You agreed just like that?
“Don’t you have any conditions?”
“I do.” Wei Yixian gripped her hand and pressed it against her chest. “Stay by my side.”
–
The investigation into the assault case involving “Shang Shiyu” was not progressing smoothly.
The three men who had pretended to be drunk refused to admit they had targeted Shang Shiqian.
They insisted they were intoxicated and had mistaken Shang Shiqian for a female scammer who had swindled their “boss.”
They argued that while mistaking her identity was their fault, they hadn’t actually harmed Shang Shiqian.
On the contrary, Chu Fei and Xiao Luomeng had beaten them, one breaking their bones, the other giving them a minor concussion and they weren’t about to let that slide.
As one of the parties involved, Shang Shiqian lacked identification, so her testimony couldn’t be formally recorded, leaving her vulnerable to their counteraccusations.
At the police station, Wei Yixian had anticipated this outcome, so she called Xie Mei and others back to the company for an overnight emergency meeting.
By the next morning, Xie Mei arrived with updates.
“They discovered that their private accounts had indeed received large sums of money from unknown sources, one person got 100,000, while two others received 50,000 each, dated just three days ago. Tracing the remittance accounts further, they found that one of these accounts had also received a transfer from overseas a week earlier, a full 500,000.”
Wei Yixian pondered, “A week ago that would be right after the acquisition case was terminated.”
“Exactly. So it’s possible someone wanted revenge over this matter.”
As for why they targeted “Shang Shiyu”?
It wasn’t hard to guess.
Wei Yixian was always surrounded by bodyguards and only frequented high-end venues, making it nearly impossible for anyone to get close.
If someone wanted revenge, the only way was to strike at those close to her.
Currently, there were only two people Wei Yixian cared about: her first love, Yin Zaishui, and the rumored Caged Canary.
From tonight’s actions, it seemed the perpetrator had uncovered the identity of Wei Yixian’s Caged Canary and chose to go after the easier target”Shang Shiyu.”
Wei Yixian said, “Focus the investigation on the Wei and Zhou families.”
The reason Yin Zaishui wasn’t targeted might be because she also had bodyguards, but very few people could have traced “Shang Shiyu’s” connection to Wei Yixian.
It couldn’t be ruled out that the perpetrator confirmed “Shang Shiyu’s” identity through Pu Feifei and the only ones who knew Pu Feifei was her personal secretary were members of the Wei family.
The Zhou family was included because, in the original storyline, they had pulled similar stunts before.
“Find out who paid them. Tell him that turning himself in voluntarily could lead to leniency. If he refuses to cooperate, report him for accepting funds from overseas sources, money laundering, espionage. His financial trail won’t hold up under scrutiny.”
“Once he confesses, let the three thugs know that he took 500,000 but only gave them 200,000 to split.”
With this strategy, one of the thugs quickly cracked due to resentment over the unfair distribution.
The apprehended “boss,” fearing charges of espionage and money laundering, confessed that someone had approached him shortly after his release from prison, asking him to teach someone a lesson.
The “leader” who had taken 100,000, upon learning the “boss” wasn’t the real employer, angrily admitted, “That shameless middleman actually outsourced the job?!”
Keeping 300,000 for himself and only giving them 200,000 to risk jail time, how could the “boss” be so ruthless?!
The investigators were speechless.
He gave you 200,000, and you still pocketed half, only handing out the rest to your lackeys?
With the “boss’s” cooperation, the police soon traced the overseas account that had wired him the money to Qi Shuide.
Most people wouldn’t recognize the name, but Wei Yixian knew exactly who he was.
Qi Shuide was Wei Yizhu’s uncle, who had already emigrated abroad.
If he refused to cooperate, the police would have to wait until he re-entered the country to arrest him.
Though there was no direct evidence linking Wei Yizhu to this.
How could Qi Shuide, who hadn’t set foot in the country for years, know so much about the people around Wei Yixian?
Wei Yixian’s eyes turned icy. “Hmph. Seems like I’ve let him live too comfortably all these years.”
Meanwhile.
Chen Yixun, who had signed up for summer social practice, stepped into the Phoenix Education Foundation building with his school group.
Wei Yixian: Haven’t you noticed I’ve been trying to top up my phone balance this whole time? It just won’t go through!
Shang Si: Because of network lag.
