- Chapter 61 - Lacking Virtue
After two days of preparation over the weekend, when the market opened on Monday, Wei Corporation’s stock had declined, but not as severely as feared.
Seeing this, the board members’ criticism of Wei Yixian’s decision to terminate the acquisition deal lessened considerably.
However, the harshest condemnation didn’t come from outside it came from within the Wei family itself.
Wei Yihui confronted Wei Yixian directly in her office, while Wei Yizhu, who usually liked to play the mediator during sibling disputes, intercepted her car in the Wei Corporation parking lot after work.
The siblings’ accusations were nearly identical: “Why did you suddenly decide to terminate the acquisition while Dad was abroad?”
Wei Yixian replied, “It was the board’s decision.”
“Dad was already overseas by Friday. Who called the board meeting?”
Wei Yixian countered indifferently, “Who told you the decision was only made on Friday?”
Wei Yizhu suddenly remembered the anniversary of the old patriarch’s death, when Wei Yixian had spent a long time in the study with their father and aunt.
It dawned on him, they had already made the decision long ago, keeping it hidden from those who were cut out of the loop!
His face darkened. Didn’t this mean Wei Yongkun never truly considered them his real sons?!
Wei Yixian’s expression remained calm, but her eyes were full of disdain. “Did you really think I wouldn’t find out just because you used someone else’s identity?”
Zhou Ran Group had committed financial fraud and concealed potential debts, all to inflate the company’s valuation during the acquisition.
If that were all, many shareholders might have turned a blind eye, given the potential benefits the acquisition could bring to Wei Corporation.
But the Zhou family wanted Wei Corporation to issue shares to Zhou Ran Group’s original shareholders, meaning that if the financial fraud came to light, Wei Corporation would be the one suffering the losses.
Wei Yizhu, eager to grab a bigger slice of the pie, had publicly followed the trend by buying some shares, but in reality, he had secretly colluded with the Zhou family through a shell company owned by his birth mother, Qi Lu.
After breaking up with Wei Yongkun, Qi Lu had moved to Taiwan. Even though the shell company’s registered owner was someone else, Wei Yixian still found a way to trace it back to her.
Wei Yongkun might lack business acumen, but as the head of the Wei family and the primary beneficiary of Wei Corporation, he would never tolerate his own family conspiring with outsiders to steal from him.
Wei Yixian added, “You should learn from Wei Yihui. Right now, she’s probably on her way to ask her parents for money to cover her losses.”
As the car window rolled up, Wei Yizhu’s usual facade shattered. His eyes, nearly hidden by the folds of his face, gleamed with malice as he watched the luxury car drive away.
–
When Wei Yixian returned to Tianhao Garden and saw the sports car parked on the lawn leaving deep tire tracks in the grass she walked inside expressionlessly.
Pu Feifei greeted her, “Welcome back, President Wei.”
Wei Yixian scowled. “Let the air out of that car’s tires.”
Pu Feifei: “…?”
Just then, Shang Xiaowu emerged from the basement and muttered loudly, “Wow, Wei Yixian, you’re so petty!”
A vein throbbed in Wei Yixian’s forehead. “Allowing you inside is already the height of my generosity. Why should I bother with morals when dealing with someone as uncivilized as you?”
After the incident of being framed, Shang Xiaowu was confined at home by the Shang family under the pretext of focusing on her creative work, and some of her previously scheduled tasks were canceled.
For the two days she was confined, she spent them painting at home.
Today, she couldn’t take it anymore and requested to go out for some fresh air.
Shang Yufeng said, “Just stay home quietly for a few more days. If you really want to go for a walk, you can stroll around the nearby scenic area.”
Shang Xiaowu tried to get Li Xiao and Zhao Duxing to “rescue” her.
Shang Yufeng said, “You were framed at Zhao Duxing’s birthday banquet, and you still dare to go out with her?”
“It was her birthday banquet, she must have been set up too.”
In that situation, if Shang Xiaowu got into trouble, the person who organized the banquet would inevitably bear some responsibility, so she believed Zhao Duxing wasn’t behind it.
Shang Yufeng remained unmoved.
Li Xiao did come over, but when she saw Shang Yufeng sitting in the living room like an immovable pillar, she didn’t dare suggest taking Shang Xiaowu to the filming set and slunk away.
Shang Xiaowu cursed Li Xiao in her heart for being unreliable.
She sprawled inelegantly on the sofa and said dejectedly, “Can I at least go pick a fight with Wei Yixian?”
Shang Shixing, who had just returned home, heard this and said, “You can.”
Shang Xiaowu thought she misheard. She sprang up like a carp leaping out of water. “Big sister, what did you say?”
Shang Shixing said, “You can go find Wei Yixian.”
As for Shang Xiaowu’s motive for going to Tianhao Garden, she didn’t take it seriously.
Shang Xiaowu felt like the sun had risen from the west.
But she didn’t care about the reason. After changing her clothes, she dashed out the door.
Shang Yufeng stroked Lanke and asked calmly, “What did Wei Yixian do to change your attitude?”
Shang Shixing said, “Actually, a few days ago, I received an email. Someone warned me that Xiaowu’s social circle isn’t clean.
I’ve had people trace the sender, but their skills are at the level of a top-tier hacker. Even when we tracked the IP of the connection, it pointed to servers overseas.
However, this precisely indicates that the person behind it must be from the elite families of Dongcheng.
Because only someone with not just money but also social status even connections and resources abroad could afford to hire a top-tier hacker.
At the same time, they must be familiar with Xiaowu’s social circle.
But this person must have a poor relationship with our family. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have to warn us secretly like this. They could have just told us directly and even earned our goodwill.”
Shang Yufeng didn’t understand hackers or IPs, but she trusted her granddaughter’s investigation and reasoning.
“After narrowing it down one by one, the scope shrank significantly,” Shang Shixing said. “But at first, I wasn’t sure it was Wei Yixian until I called her and tried to trick her.”
Of course, Wei Yixian was also a cunning old fox, so Shang Shixing didn’t manage to trick anything out of her.
But one thing did make her sense something unusual.
After hearing about the ghost rumors at the Treasure Pavilion, she had people investigate whether someone was behind it.
Although the school claimed the “witness” had a high fever and was delirious, unable to distinguish dreams from reality.
The person involved, Yi Jing, also stated that it was due to the pressure of the approaching Center Game Tournament, compounded by the physical toll of the flu, and that he had simply misseen things.
But the fact that such an absurd ghost story could spark heated discussions and spread beyond the campus was quite thought-provoking.
She needed to figure out if there was someone pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Her investigation revealed that a month ago, Wei Yixian had donated a batch of equipment to East City University, which had no prior collaboration with her.
Recently, a company under Wei Yixian’s holdings signed an “industry-academia cooperation” agreement with East City University.
After that, East City University hired a temporary administrator for the Treasure Pavilion.
This new Treasure Pavilion administrator had a military background. After retiring from service, he joined a security company and became a private bodyguard.
Interestingly, the one who hired this bodyguard was none other than Wei Yixian.
Not long after, rumors of hauntings began to surface.
Shang Shixing couldn’t help but suspect Wei Yixian’s involvement in the haunting rumors.
However, after years of dealing with him, even though she harbored resentment toward Wei Yixian over Shang Shiqian’s matter finding his actions hypocritical for “ostensibly rejecting the arranged blind dates set by the Wei family because of Shang Shiqian, while actually waiting for his first love to return from abroad”, she had to admit that he was exceptionally talented in business and finance.
Wei Yixian wouldn’t spend millions hiring a private bodyguard just to spread rumors at East City University.
The cost was too high it would be cheaper to just pay some internet trolls to stir the pot.
The industry-academia cooperation with East City University also didn’t align with Wei Yixian’s usual profit-driven principles.
All of this seemed to point toward Wei Yixian’s rumored Caged Canary.
Shang Shixing had only hinted at investigating that person when Wei Yixian diverted her attention with the email matter.
She suspected Wei Yixian’s unusual behavior was somehow connected to Shang Xiaowu frequently visiting East City University and Tianhao Garden recently, so she used Wei Yixian to test Shang Xiaowu.
Sure enough, to conceal the existence of a third party besides Xiao Luomeng, Shang Xiaowu admitted that the person she had supper with that night was Wei Yixian.
This meant Shang Xiaowu, Xiao Luomeng, and Wei Yixian all knew that person and they were all hiding the person’s existence to protect them.
Shang Shixing said, “So she wasn’t going to see Wei Yixian she was going to see that person named Shi Yu.”
Hearing the commotion downstairs, Shang Shiqian came up as well.
“What’s going on?”
Wei Yixian sneered.
Shang Xiaowu looked guilty.
Pu Feifei tactfully explained, “The Fifth Young Miss Shang mistook the lawn for the garage and parked her car on the grass.”
Shang Shiqian immediately understood what had happened and said to Shang Xiaowu, “Couldn’t you just park in the garage? Haphazard parking isn’t a good habit.”
Shang Xiaowu replied, “I’ll go move the car now. Just tell me how much the lawn repair costs, and I’ll pay for it.”
“It’s not about the money it’s about basic decency. Don’t do this again.”
Wei Yixian said, “Next time? There won’t be a next time. I won’t let her in again.”
Seeing Shang Xiaowu about to retort, Shang Shiqian quickly ushered her out.
“What she did was indeed excessive. You were right not to let her in before,” Shang Shiqian said righteously.
A faint smile appeared on Wei Yixian’s face. “You’re not thinking of apologizing on her behalf, are you?”
Shang Shiqian: “…”
Was she that easy to read? Wei Yixian could even see through this.
“Is that okay?”
“No.” Wei Yixian refused. “She’s an adult now. She should take responsibility for her own actions.”
“Fine then.” Shang Shiqian didn’t insist after all, she could tell Shang Xiaowu was deliberately trying to annoy Wei Yixian.
Wei Yixian hadn’t provoked her, so her behavior was indeed unjustified.
When Shang Xiaowu returned, Wei Yixian asked her, “When are you leaving?”
Shang Xiaowu replied, “I’ll leave naturally once the little stand-in gets off work.”
She specifically said “off work,” so Wei Yixian understood her implication and said, “Even after she gets off work, she’ll be staying the night here. You can leave now.”
Shang Xiaowu asked Shang Shiqian in surprise, “You moved back in?”
“Not exactly. My luggage is still at the dorm.”
Shang Xiaowu: ?
Why couldn’t she quite understand the dynamic between these two?
Not knowing what wild assumptions she’d made, Shang Xiaowu immediately gave Wei Yixian a strange look: “Did you learn Go so well you ended up in bed together?”
“Cough cough cough.” Shang Shiqian choked on her own saliva.
Wei Yixian calmly handed Shang Shiqian the glass of water from the table to drink.
Then she answered Shang Xiaowu’s question: “Is that not allowed?”
“Pfft!”
