- Chapter 59 - Handling
Near the Shang residence stood a distinctive shopping complex. Its top floor featured a large terrace with a Ferris wheel and several open-air food stalls and hot pot restaurants.
Operating until 5 a.m., the place was both safe and hygienic, making it a popular late-night dining spot for many young people.
Since Shang Xiaowu often visited with friends, she had saved the contact numbers of several stall owners. After picking a place for dinner, she called ahead to reserve a table otherwise, she might end up eating on the ground due to the overwhelming crowds.
When Shang Shiqian arrived, she glanced up at the Ferris wheel shimmering with colorful lights.
Noticing this, Shang Xiaowu asked, “Have you ever ridden a Ferris wheel before?”
Shang Shiqian smiled. “Yes, but it was a long time ago.”
Her earliest memory of visiting an amusement park and riding the Ferris wheel dated back to when she was four. Their mothers were often too busy with work to spend time with them, but after Shang Xiaowu was born, their mother took advantage of her remaining leave to accompany her and their eldest sister to the amusement park.
Of course, their grandparents had also taken them there frequently, but Shang Shiqian had never been particularly interested in the rides. Every visit, she would sit to the side and play chess with her grandfather. Later, after joining the Go master’s dojo, she rarely went to amusement parks at all.
Shang Xiaowu didn’t press the topic further. After sitting down, she slid the menu toward Shang Shiqian. “What do you want to eat?”
“Just grilled eggplant for me.”
“That’s it? At least get the ‘late-night trio.'”
Shang Shiqian asked, “What’s the ‘late-night trio’?”
“Barbecue, beer, and crayfish.”
“You drove here. Why would you drink?”
“It’s so close to home. I’ll just leave the car here and have our eldest sister pick me up.”
Shang Shiqian gazed into the distance.
The bustling city was ablaze with lights.
Only the closed-off scenic area at night remained shrouded in darkness, with a few sparse lamps resembling drifting fireflies.
She withdrew her gaze and said, “Didn’t you just have dinner? No need to order too much.”
“The food tonight wasn’t great. I barely ate anything, so I’m starving now.”
Shang Shiqian chuckled. “Or maybe your taste buds are just too sensitive?”
Shang Xiaowu didn’t respond. Remembering she had a pack of candy in her bag, she took it out to snack on while waiting for their food.
Shang Shiqian glanced at it and suddenly recalled that in Shang Xiaowu’s side stories, there were multiple mentions of her eating candy. But based on her observations these past few days, Shang Xiaowu didn’t seem to have a habit of eating sweets at all.
Cautious, she intercepted the candy. “Did you steal this from your niece?”
“Steal? She stuffed it into my bag!” (Wasn’t it perfectly natural for an aunt to take her niece’s candy?)
Shang Shiqian examined the packaging.
Though flashy, it looked like a common brand of Popping Candy. However, when she turned it over, she noticed it lacked the “QS” mark, the Food Quality Safety certification.
Not only that, the production information didn’t match the English text below. A legitimate company would never make such a basic mistake.
Shang Shiqian asked, “Are you sure your niece put this in your bag?”
Shang Xiaowu hesitated. “Probably? No one else would’ve put candy in my bag.”
Shang Shiqian: “…”
How careless!
“When did you first notice this in your bag?”
Shang Xiaowu showed no impatience and replied, “I left after dinner. What’s wrong?”
“Where have you been today?”
Seeing her ask in such detail, Shang Xiaowu grew uneasy: “I stayed home, then went to a friend’s birthday party in the evening before coming straight to meet you. What’s going on?”
Shang Shiqian suspected this packet was the same drug from the original story that led to Shang Xiaowu’s downfall.
But this was just speculation. Without evidence, her guesses would only cause unnecessary panic.
Moreover, given Shang Xiaowu’s personality, she would undoubtedly confront everyone at the birthday party immediately.
If the culprit couldn’t be identified, it would only alert them prematurely.
Considering this, Shang Shiqian scolded her: “You don’t even know who put it there, yet you dared to eat it?”
Shang Xiaowu was left speechless.
Quick-witted, she realized: “Is there something wrong with this?”
“Not sure. If you don’t mind, I’ll call Xiao Luomeng over.”
“Why her?”
“To have late-night snacks together.”
Shang Xiaowu knew this was an excuse but didn’t stop her.
…
Xiao Luomeng lived and worked nearby, arriving in less than twenty minutes.
Spotting the beer on the table, she grabbed a bottle, pried off the cap with the table edge, and took a swig.
Shang Xiaowu had never seen such a rough woman and was exasperated: “Even if you’re Shang Shiyu’s friend, isn’t this too much?”
Xiao Luomeng asked, “Are you treating tonight too?”
Shang Xiaowu said, “It’s Shang Shiyu’s turn.”
“Then I’m drinking hers. Your opinion means squat.”
“You!”
Shang Shiqian handed Shang Xiaowu a peeled crayfish: “Eat.”
After downing half the icy beer, Xiao Luomeng finally asked Shang Shiqian, “Where is it?”
Shang Shiqian passed her the packet of Popping Candy.
Xiao Luomeng put on disposable gloves. Just one glance at the packaging made her expression change.
Upon opening it, her face turned grave, and her gaze sharpened as she looked at Shang Shiqian: “Where did this come from?”
Seeing their reactions, Shang Xiaowu guessed the truth and confessed: “Someone put this in my bag.”
She recounted the day’s events.
Xiao Luomeng said, “Looks like we’ll all need to visit the police station.”
At that moment, a cool voice interjected: “I’m afraid that won’t be possible.”
Xiao Luomeng was about to sternly reprimand them when she realized the words hadn’t come from either woman.
Turning her head, she cursed inwardly: “Trouble’s here.”
Shang Shiqian was surprised to see the newcomer: “Wei, Ah Hang, weren’t you working overtime? Why are you here?”
It was Wei Yixian, wearing a face mask.
“Ah Hang! How intimate,” Shang Xiaowu muttered sourly.
Wei Yixian ignored her and answered Shang Shiqian, “I knew you were still having supper, so I came straight after work.”
Xiao Luomeng raised an eyebrow. “Why not? As citizens, we have a duty to cooperate with police investigations, don’t we?”
Chu Fei, standing beside Wei Yixian, said, “This place is too crowded. Let’s talk somewhere quieter.”
Xiao Luomeng agreed.
Shang Xiaowu, unconcerned, kept eating crayfish.
Hearing this, she wiped her mouth and said, “But we haven’t even finished our supper yet.”
Shang Shiqian took off her gloves, dried her hands, and flicked her younger sister’s forehead. “Who cares about late-night snacks now? Pack it up.”
Shang Xiaowu reluctantly packed the food.
The group descended in the elevator.
The mall had already closed for the day. Apart from the few people eating late-night snacks on the terrace, the interior was nearly empty.
When they reached the parking lot, Xiao Luomeng said to Shang Xiaowu, “What I mean is, since we’ve come into contact with this stuff, we should all take a urine test to prove our innocence.”
Shang Xiaowu muttered, “The package wasn’t even opened when you arrived.”
If she ended up at the police station, her family would surely investigate her thoroughly wouldn’t that expose the little stand-in?
Xiao Luomeng replied, “But we can’t rule out the possibility that something was tampered with in what you ate today.”
Shang Xiaowu felt uncertain. “I’ll go alone. Shang Shiyu only came to see me tonight, she’s definitely clean.”
Xiao Luomeng also knew Shang Shiyu was undocumented. If she ended up at the station, it would be troublesome.
She bent the rules this once. “Fine, just the two of us then. I’ll call my mentor to pick us up.”
Before she could dial, Wei Yixian interjected, “You should inform the Shang family first.”
If word got out that Shang Xiaowu had taken a drug test, even if she was clean, the media would twist it into a scandal.
Internet trolls would inevitably jump to conclusions with their impeccable logic: Drugs can be traced in urine for 3-7 days. A negative result now doesn’t mean she wasn’t using a week ago.
If she wasn’t guilty, why would the police make her take a test?
No prior drug history? The Shang family probably covered it up…
Wei Yixian was blunt. “Shang Shidai can’t handle a crisis. Shang Shixing is the best person to deal with this.”
Shang Xiaowu stomped her foot in anger. “What do you mean? Looking down on me?!”
Wei Yixian gave her a sidelong glance. “With the way you were about to eat something suspicious without even realizing you were being framed, do you really think you deserve my respect?”
“I just wasn’t on guard,” Shang Xiaowu defended herself.
Wei Yixian ignored her excuses and pulled Shang Shiqian’s hand to leave. “Let’s go.”
Shang Shiqian glanced worriedly at her sister, clearly reluctant to leave her.
Wei Yixian said, “Xiao Luomeng isn’t a cop, she can bend the rules and pretend she never saw you. Sun Wei can’t.”
“I know.”
Shang Shiqian got into the car with Wei Yixian, but the vehicle didn’t start immediately.
Before long, the eldest sister Shang Shixing’s car appeared.
Sun Wei also arrived in a police car.
Whatever agreement they reached, Shang Shixing took Shang Xiaowu away, while Sun Wei drove Xiao Luomeng, following behind them.
Knowing her eldest sister was handling it, Shang Shiqian finally relaxed.
“Can we go home now without worry?” Wei Yixian asked.
Shang Shiqian felt a little embarrassed. “Yeah. Thank you, Ah Hang.”
“For what?”
“For picking me up?” A flicker of doubt crossed her mind, but she didn’t voice it.
Wei Yixian looked at her, keeping up the act. “You seem particularly concerned about Shang Shidai. Why?”
Shang Shiqian replied, “She’s a friend. And I hope that through her, I can resolve the misunderstandings between you and the Shang family, bridging the gap.”
She expected Wei Yixian to scold her for meddling.
Instead, he said nothing.
Back at Tianhao Garden, Wei Yixian immediately locked himself in the study.
The next morning, Shang Shiqian learned from the news what Wei Yixian had been busy with the night before.
At 7:30 p.m. the previous evening, the Wei Group had issued an announcement declaring the termination of its acquisition of Zhou Ran Group.
To reassure shareholders, the announcement also stated that the acquisition was still in the negotiation and planning stages and had not been formally implemented, so it would not affect the company’s operations or harm the interests of the company and its shareholders.
Though brief, even without financial expertise, Shang Shiqian could sense the storm brewing from these reports.
Sure enough, after Wei Yixian returned from playing tennis, her personal phone kept ringing her work phone was with Xie Mei.
Only those close to her would call her private number.
Wei Yixian ignored all the calls.
Just as Shang Shiqian was about to leave, Wei Yixian’s phone rang again.
The new call made her instinctively glance at Shang Shiqian.
Thinking she was waiting for him to take the initiative, Shang Shiqian leaned in and kissed her: “I’m heading out.”
Wei Yixian smiled and nodded: “Go ahead.”
Only after Shang Shiqian waved goodbye did she step aside to answer the call.
Shang Shixing’s voice came through the phone: “That email you were the one who had it sent, weren’t you?”
Shang Xiaowu: Why did Mom take you and Big Sis to the amusement park right after I was born?
Shang Shixing: Thanks to you, Mom got maternity and breastfeeding leave.
Shang Xiaowu: )
