- Chapter 57.1 - Auntie
Shang Xiaowu was a woman of action.
After picking up Shang Lingchu, she headed straight for East City University.
Peering out the car window, Shang Lingchu realized this wasn’t the way home and immediately asked curiously, “Auntie, are you kidnapping me?”
Shang Xiaowu: …
If the little brat hadn’t been sitting in the back seat, she would’ve flicked her forehead.
Shang Xiaowu asked, “Yes, are you going to call the police?”
Shang Lingchu glanced at the children’s smartwatch on her wrist, hesitated, then sighed with exaggerated maturity, “I don’t want Auntie to go to jail, so forget it.”
Shang Xiaowu: “Then should Auntie thank you for not turning me in?”
“You’re welcome.”
After laughing, Shang Xiaowu said, “Auntie needs to meet a friend. If you don’t want to come, I can take you home first.”
“Auntie, you’ve already decided to act first and ask for permission later, so stop saying things you don’t mean. You’ll feel guilty for lying to a kid, and listening to you lie makes me uncomfortable too. But since you’re my auntie, I’ll forgive you!”
Shang Xiaowu: …
Who on earth taught this little brat to talk like this?
Her eldest sister didn’t speak in such an infuriating way, and her sister’s wife barely came home a few times a year. So the real culprit must be,C.C.!
At that moment, a certain long-haired cat curled up on a meditation cushion in the Shang household suddenly sneezed.
Shang Yufeng, who had been writing at her desk, paused and picked it up. “Lanke, did you catch a cold too?”
She checked the time and murmured, “Why aren’t Xiaowu and the others back yet?”
Civilization Street, East City University.
Shang Lingchu sat in the café, staring longingly at the little cakes in the display case before turning to ask, “Auntie, can I have a cake?”
Shang Xiaowu replied, “It’s almost dinnertime. If you eat cake now, you won’t have an appetite later, and your mom will scold you again. Besides, didn’t you say your tooth hurts? Should you really be eating sweets?”
Shang Lingchu protested, “My tooth hurts because it’s falling out, not because of a cavity. I can eat sweets!”
“It’s precisely because you need to protect your new teeth that you shouldn’t eat too many sweets. Those new teeth will stay with you for life, once they’re damaged, they’re gone.”
Shang Lingchu crossed her arms, pouting angrily.
When Shang Shiqian walked in, she saw a fair-skinned little girl with two braids, wearing a T-shirt and a plaid skirt simple yet neat sulking with her cheeks puffed up.
In her, Shang Shiqian caught a faint resemblance to her eldest sister.
“Lit—” Shang Xiaowu almost called out “Little Stand-in” but stopped herself, remembering it would set a bad example for the child. Instead, she said, “Shi Yu.”
Shang Shiqian chuckled. “Shang Xiaowu’s being polite and well-behaved today.”
Shang Xiaowu huffed.
Shang Lingchu, who had been sulking, instantly shifted her attention. She studied the tall, stylishly dressed woman whose face was hidden behind a mask and quietly tugged her aunt’s sleeve.
“Auntie, who is this big sister?”
Shang Shiqian bent down, resting her hands on her knees to meet Shang Lingchu’s eye level.
“My name is Shiyu, ‘Shi’ as in ‘Time Waits for No One,’ ‘Yu’ as in ‘with.’ By family rank, you should call me Auntie.”
Shang Lingchu said, “But lots of aunties older than you don’t like being called ‘Auntie.’ They say ‘Big Sister’ is more polite.”
“But I don’t mind.”
Shang Xiaowu said, “She likes being called ‘Auntie,’ so just call her that!”
Shang Lingchu called out, “Okay, Little Auntie.”
Shang Shiqian felt her heart melt.
Her little niece was truly adorable!
Shang Xiaowu asked, “What do you mean, ‘Little Auntie’?”
“She’s younger than Auntie, so she’s Little Auntie.”
“How do you know she’s younger than me?”
“Auntie just called her ‘Little Shiyu,’ which means she’s younger than Auntie.”
Shang Xiaowu was left speechless.
Shang Shiqian marveled her little niece was indeed the child of her eldest sister.
She asked, “What’s your name? Would you like some cake?”
The little girl’s eyes lit up. “Thank you, Little Auntie. My name is Shang Lingchu, ‘Ling’ as in ‘season,’ ‘Chu’ as in ‘beginning.'”
Shang Xiaowu quickly intervened, “She’s losing her baby teeth. My sister doesn’t let her eat too many sweets.”
Shang Shiqian glanced at her niece, then thought of her eldest sister, and regretfully said, “Then I guess it’s a no.”
Shang Lingchu: “…”
Ugh, her mom wasn’t even here, she wouldn’t know if she ate it. Why were adults so inflexible?
Drinking coffee at this hour would make it hard to sleep at night, so Shang Xiaowu went next door to buy milk tea before returning to enjoy the air conditioning.
Little Shang Lingchu sipped plain cold water from her thermos.
Shang Shiqian asked, “How old are you, Lingchu?”
“Six.”
Shang Shiqian recalled seeing another child in the back seat of her eldest sister’s car during her last visit to the Shang family and asked, “What about the younger one? Why didn’t you bring her along?”
“She’s two. Too young, the nanny’s watching her.”
Shang Lingchu chimed in, “Little Auntie, my sister’s name is Lingxi, ‘Xi’ as in ‘hope.'”
Shang Shiqian smiled. “Both your names are lovely.”
Shang Lingchu replied politely, “Thank you!”
Just then, Shang Lingchu’s smartwatch rang.
She answered the call, her voice sweet and soft. “Great-Grandma!”
Shang Yufeng’s cheerful voice came through. “Little Chu, why aren’t you back yet?”
“Auntie brought me to see a friend.”
Shang Xiaowu quickly added, “Grandma, I picked up Lingchu and stopped by to visit a friend. We’ll be back soon.”
“Glad you found her. Drive safely.”
After hanging up, Shang Xiaowu noticed Shang Shiqian seemed lost in thought.
“What’s on your mind?”
Shang Shiqian snapped out of it, suppressing the lump in her throat. “Nothing. How’s Grandma doing?”
“Grandma’s fine, but Grandpa’s memory is getting worse,” Shang Xiaowu sighed.
Shang Shiqian then asked casually, “And your, mother? How is she?”
“They’re probably doing well. Mother went abroad recently for an academic conference, and Mumu went with her. After returning, one buried herself in the lab, and the other naturally stayed away from home too.”
Their mother, Shang Yunyu, and Mumu, Zhu Fu, had never married.
Back when they were young, same-sex marriage legislation hadn’t yet been passed.
After Parthenogenesis Technology progressed from breakthrough to maturity and developed for over a decade, more and more children were born and raised healthily through this method. To protect related rights, calls for legal reforms grew louder, prompting Xia to revise its laws.
By then, the two had already raised three children Shang Shixing was born to Shang Yunyu, while Shang Shiqian and Shang Shidai were carried by Zhu Fu and saw no real difference whether they had a marriage certificate or not.
Additionally, given that Zhu Fu’s workplace environment is relatively conservative, not having a marriage certificate actually reduces the obstacles to promotion. So over the years, they never bothered to register their marriage officially.
This has been an open secret within their circle.
Shang Shiqian didn’t pry into her eldest sister and sister-in-law’s affairs. After all, asking too much about the sister-in-law’s work could easily invite unnecessary trouble.
Shang Xiaowu and Lingchu stayed on Wenming Street for about an hour. As the Shang family’s dinner time approached, Shang Shixing called to check on them, and they finally left.
Before departing, Shang Shiqian gave the black chess piece pendant from her backpack to Lingchu.
“I noticed you’ve been playing with it the whole time, you must really like it. Consider it a gift for our first meeting,” she said.
Lingchu accepted it with both hands. “Thank you. Auntie, Mommy says when you receive a gift, you should give one in return. I didn’t bring anything, but Mommy is taking me to the amusement park tomorrow. Would you like to come with us?”
Shang Xiaowu cut in, “She’s busy.”
Lingchu pouted. “I was inviting Auntie Shiqian, not you, Auntie.”
If possible, Shang Shiqian would have loved to accept. But she couldn’t just appear in front of her eldest sister like that, so she politely declined. “I won’t be free until July 10th. Before then, I really can’t make time for the amusement park. But if you still want to go after July 10th, I’d be happy to take you.”
Shang Xiaowu asked, “Why July 10th? East City University’s semester ends on July 3rd, doesn’t it?”
“Because the National College Go Championship is the next day. My job is to coach the students and give them extra training. Once they leave for the competition, my work is done.”
Shang Xiaowu gasped in surprise. “Wait, so you really weren’t there to learn Go after all?!”
Shang Shiqian didn’t bother explaining further and urged them, “Aren’t you supposed to be heading back for dinner? Don’t keep Grandma waiting too long.”
After her niece and sister-in-law left, Shang Shiqian returned to the university cafeteria for dinner.
