The Cannon Fodder Ex-Wife Changes to Take the Black Moonlight Script - Chapter 26.2
So much so that she momentarily wondered: Who was the one who had come back from the dead? Why did Wei Yixian seem more like someone who had spent time in the underworld than she did?
Wei Yixian shifted her gaze to the screen and gave a nonchalant “Hmm.”
Shang Shiqian finally relaxed, sensing something familiar in her demeanor.
She asked, “Why are you back so early?”
Wei Yixian tapped her wristwatch. “Lunchtime.”
The digital clock on the wall showed it was already 12:30 PM.
Shang Shiqian hit pause and got up to eat.
Wei Yixian asked, “Weren’t you watching the opening ceremony?”
“Oh, I just found out the opening ceremony was moved to the evening, so I was checking out past matches of the Weijia League participants on the livestream platform.”
Eight years was enough time for a whole new generation of Go players to rise in the ranks.
The prime of a professional Go player’s career isn’t very long typically five to ten years with peak performance usually around the age of twenty. After thirty, most begin to decline.
The age limit for professional certification (before 25) takes this into account.
Thus, Shang Shiqian was eight years behind her peers in experience and practical play, and she lacked deep familiarity with the rising stars.
She urgently needed to fill in those eight missing years.
Wei Yixian stood up. “Let’s eat first.”
Though Shang Shiqian was engrossed in Go, she wasn’t so obsessed as to skip meals. She followed Wei Yixian to the living room for lunch.
After lunch, Shang Shiqian returned to the basement to study the matches, while Wei Yixian went to her study to handle company matters.
They didn’t see each other again until dinner that evening.
The opening ceremony was scheduled for 8:00 PM. Shang Shiqian took a shower and, without even drying her hair, curled up on the sofa to watch the livestream on the sports channel.
Wei Yixian came downstairs too.
Shang Shiqian asked, “You’re watching too?”
“Let’s hold tonight’s Go lesson here. You can explain the tournament rules to me as we watch.”
This way, she could teach Wei Yixian about Go while saving time. Shang Shiqian happily agreed.
Opening ceremonies usually began with the host introducing the guests, participating teams, and players, followed by speeches from key officials, and then cultural performances.
When the host introduced the vice president of the Xia Kingdom Go Association and the live broadcast camera cut to a man in the front row of the venue, Shang Shiqian’s face revealed a look of surprise.
Wei Yixian, who had been secretly observing her, asked, “Vice President of the Go Association, Xin Hao Meijin, Tengen, 9-dan. Do you know him?”
Shang Shiqian forced a smile to avoid showing any flaws. “Anyone who studies Go would know him, wouldn’t they?”
Suddenly, she realized something. The host had only introduced Xin Hao as the vice president of the Go Association and hadn’t mentioned his titles, yet Wei Yixian knew them so clearly. Could she also know him?
She voiced this doubt.
Wei Yixian replied calmly, “Eight years ago, during the Tengen title match, he was the defending champion, the Tengen who had won five consecutive championships.” She paused for half a second, her tone turning subtle. “And it was the night before my ex-wife Shang Shiqian was supposed to challenge him that she died.”
Shang Shiqian gritted her teeth in frustration at the memory.
Damn it. Of all times to kidnap her, why did it have to be at such a critical moment?
If she didn’t already know the culprit was dead, she’d have gone to give them a piece of her mind.
Wei Yixian raised an eyebrow at her irritated expression and continued, “He defended his Tengen title, achieving six consecutive wins, and the following year, he successfully defended it again, setting a record of seven consecutive Tengen titles. It wasn’t until he turned 30 six years ago that he faced Chen Dongzhu, who was then an 8-dan player, and his streak was finally broken.”
“Chen Dongzhu” Shang Shiqian knew him too.
He was only a year older than her, making them contemporaries in the Go world. As a result, they had faced each other many times during her career.
When Shang Shiqian was twenty, during the Meijin title match, she defeated the reigning champion Chen Dongzhu with a score of 2-1, successfully defending her Meijin title.
And eight years ago, during the Tengen title match, they had met again in the finals.
In the end, Shang Shiqian defeated him once more, earning the right to challenge the reigning Tengen.
Wei Yixian casually shared an update on Chen Dongzhu’s recent status: “Chen Dongzhu is now a 9-dan player and the first in Xia Kingdom to simultaneously hold the Meijin, Tengen, and Kisei titles.”
“Kisei?!” Shang Shiqian was shocked.
Wei Yixian seemed to understand her surprise and explained, “This ‘Kisei’ title is different in meaning from the one held by Kisei Yu Yifei.”
The Kisei title held by Shang Shiqian’s master, Yu Yifei, was bestowed upon him by the nation in recognition of his contributions to Go, a unique honor.
Later Kisei titles were earned through the Kisei tournament, making them merely competitive titles.
Wei Yixian added, “The first Kisei tournament was planned in 2017 and held in 2018.”
Shang Shiqian suddenly understood.
By then, she had already been buried for over a year, no wonder she hadn’t known about this tournament.
Still, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Wei Yixian’s explanations were oddly detailed, as if she knew Shang Shiqian was unaware and was deliberately filling her in.
She asked her system, [Little Black System, don’t you think it’s strange how much Wei Yixian knows about all this, despite being a Go novice? And she actually had the patience to explain so much to me!]
The second point was what truly shocked her.
Just a few days ago, Wei Yixian had been so impatient with her that she could barely stand to look at her.
Why the sudden change in attitude these past two days?
The system replied: “Knowing how to play Go and being familiar with Go-related information are two different concepts. For example, does a die-hard football fan who watches the World Cup regularly and can rattle off all the tournaments and star players necessarily know how to play football?”
Shang Shiqian found this reasoning quite convincing and stopped dwelling on that point.
Wei Yixian: “…”
She waited until Shang Shiqian finished his conversation with the system before revealing a mocking expression: “You boast about being so good at Go, how come you don’t even know these basic things?”
Shang Shiqian said: “I told you before, I came from the mountains. I only know how to play, I’m not very familiar with this kind of information.”
Wei Yixian snorted.
Thinking to herself: Normally you’re full of inconsistencies, but now you suddenly remember your “from the mountains” backstory.
Suddenly, her train of thought froze.
Mountains, the Shang family cemetery was located on a small hill.
Shang Shiqian: Yes, I came from this very mountain.
Wei Yixian: How morbid?
