- Chapter 2 - Severance
The stars gradually dimmed as time passed.
A pale hue spread across the sky, and the faint morning light outlined the silhouettes of the standing tombstones with increasing clarity.
Shang Shiqian stepped away from her own grave, took a few steps forward, and then let out a sigh of relief.
Her tomb was the newest, which meant that no relatives had passed away in her family since her death.
Her family was still alive, this was the best news she had received since her rebirth.
Just as Shang Shiqian was about to leave the Shang family cemetery to return home, she suddenly froze in place.
Could she even go back?
In everyone’s eyes, she was already dead cremated and buried.
Was she supposed to go back and tell her family that she had been resurrected by a system?
Her family would never believe such nonsense. They would either think she was a criminal who had undergone plastic surgery to impersonate Shang Shiqian, or they would find her origins suspicious and send her to a research facility for dissection…
With a sliver of hope in her heart, Shang Shiqian asked the system, “System, since you revived me, you must have also taken care of my identity issue, right?”
What answered her was the system’s prolonged silence.
Shang Shiqian was never lacking in patience. Like a pine tree, she stood firmly in place.
In this invisible standoff, the system finally spoke guiltily: Ahem, since reviving you consumed too much of my energy, I don’t have any left to resolve your identity issue. You’ll have to handle that yourself. Also, due to insufficient energy, I’ll be entering power-saving mode. In this mode, only the most basic self-service functions will remain available. I’ll only reactivate once you make contact with the female lead and recharge my energy.
After saying this, it emitted a beep and truly fell silent.
Shang Shiqian: “…”
This system is really not city at all!
Suddenly, she noticed a beam of light in the distance.
The Shang family cemetery had a caretaker. Though in Shang Shiqian’s memory, it was just an elderly man with poor eyesight, he wouldn’t fail to notice a living person standing right in front of him.
Not wanting to alert the Shang family, Shang Shiqian had no choice but to avoid his patrol route, climb through two windows of the guardhouse, and escape the cemetery.
Half an hour later.
Shang Shiqian stood on a desolate stretch of road, surrounded by wilderness with no villages or towns in sight, and fell into deep thought.
Where exactly was this?
Which direction led back to the city?
Though she remembered the Shang family cemetery, she had always been driven here by a chauffeur in the past and never bothered to memorize the route. In her mind, the distance between the Shang residence and the cemetery was just a twenty-minute car ride not far at all.
“Not far my foot!” Shang Shiqian suddenly realized.
A twenty-minute drive would mean walking until her legs gave out!
She knocked on the system: “System, can you call me a ride?”
In power-saving mode, ride-hailing services are unavailable. If you need directions, silently recite to view the offline map.
True to its word, the system provided a map, though it only appeared in Shang Shiqian’s mind, with no physical form.
Checking the distance from her current location to the Shang family estate, she found it was about 15 kilometers.
She also understood why she hadn’t seen a single car in half an hour, the fifteen-kilometer stretch between the Shang family cemetery and the estate was surrounded by nature reserves, horse ranches, golf courses, and high-end rehabilitation centers.
These areas were not open to the public, and since this road led to a protected reserve, passing vehicles were naturally scarce. She would have to walk at least five more kilometers before reaching another road.
Suddenly, Shang Shiqian heard the sound of a car approaching from behind. Delighted, she stepped onto the curb and waved.
A battered pickup truck sped past.
Two minutes later, the same pickup reversed back.
The morning sun pierced through the clouds, casting its light over the misty mountain forests.
On the bustling main road, a sleek and understated black luxury car turned onto a quiet country lane, instantly enveloped in silence.
The woman resting in the back seat opened her eyes and glanced down at the bouquet in her arms. Her long, dark hair slipped from behind her ear, cascading over her cheek and blocking the streaks of sunlight filtering through the window.
She tucked the strands back behind her ear, her wristwatch glinting in the morning light.
The female secretary in the passenger seat, who had been attentively monitoring the back, quickly turned around. “President Wei, we’re almost there,” she said.
Wei Yixian, CEO of Wei Corporation, lowered her gaze slightly before responding indifferently, “Mm.”
She turned to look out the window just as a pickup truck marked with the “Forestry Bureau” logo sped past, its tires grinding over the yellow dashed lines on the road. Wei Yixian heard a faint beep.
Wei Yixian spoke up, “What was that sound?”
Both the male driver and the secretary froze. The secretary asked, “What kind of sound, President Wei?”
Wei Yixian parted her lips but then closed them again, shutting her eyes. “Must have misheard. Never mind.”
Neither the driver nor the secretary said another word.
Soon, the luxury car came to a stop in front of the gates of a cemetery.
From the guardhouse, an elderly man peeked out, then sat back down and dialed a number on his phone.
The secretary stepped out first and approached the guardhouse. Through the window, she addressed the old security guard, “Hello, the CEO of Wei Corporation is here to pay respects to the Fourth Miss Shang.”
The guard took a slow drag of his cigarette before leisurely pressing the unlock button. The wrought-iron gates slowly swung open.
Wei Yixian stepped out of the car with the bouquet. Two petals drifted to the ground. She glanced down and handed the flowers to her secretary. “These aren’t fresh. I expect better next time.”
The secretary stiffened, hesitating to speak.
Without waiting for an explanation, Wei Yixian strode into the cemetery.
The secretary moved to follow but was stopped by the driver. “Hey, where are you going? Come back.”
The secretary looked puzzled.
The driver said, “Unless you want a scolding, don’t go in there. This isn’t a place for us.”
The secretary sighed. “But the flowers… President Wei called me at 4:30 this morning, demanding a fresh bouquet by 5:30. At that hour, what florist in the city is open? I rushed to the flower market and barely found one shop with its lights on. Getting any flowers at all was a miracle, how could I possibly check if they were fresh?!”
By now, the secretary was mentally cursing Wei Yixian for being unreasonable.
The driver said in a knowing tone, “The last secretary quit because she couldn’t take it anymore.”
The secretary: “…”
No wonder the salary was so high, yet not a single secretary had lasted two years under Wei Yixian.
Her future looked bleak indeed!
Before long, a red luxury car pulled up and drove straight into the cemetery grounds.
The secretary’s eyes widened. “That car!”
The male driver said, “That’s Miss Shang’s car. This is the Shang family cemetery, only their own family members are allowed to drive inside.”
The female secretary was puzzled. “But CEO Wei and the fourth Shang sister are legally married. Logically speaking…”
“Shh, do you want to lose your job? I’d advise you not to bring this up in front of CEO Wei or the Shang family.”
The secretary seemed to recall something and immediately fell silent, cautiously glancing around.
Inside the Shang family cemetery, Wei Yixian stood expressionless before Shang Shiqian’s tombstone, her gaze inscrutable.
At the sound of heels clicking against the stone pavement, she turned her head.
A woman bearing a fifty percent resemblance to the portrait on the tombstone but with sharper, more mature features walked over, exuding a heavy aura.
Wei Yixian knew her all too well.
This was the eldest daughter of the Shang family, Shang Shixing.
Shang Shixing asked, “What’s the occasion today? Why have you suddenly come?”
Wei Yixian replied, “Other times, I might not have the chance to enter… What do you think?”
Shang Shixing scoffed, a self-deprecating smile on her lips. “True. If Mother and the others hadn’t gone abroad, you wouldn’t have been able to step foot here, let alone appear before Xiao Qian.”
Wei Yixian studied her, a trace of curiosity and confusion in her eyes. “But you let me in.”
Shang Shixing said coldly, “Drop the pretentious act. I know Yin Zaishui has returned to the country. I allowed you in so you could see Xiao Qian one last time and make a clean break. From now on, you and Xiao Qian have no ties whatsoever. I don’t want to see or hear you using her as an excuse to refuse remarriage ever again.”
Wei Yixian pressed her lips together, then after a long pause, nodded. “Understood.”
With that, she turned and walked away without looking back.
Shang Shixing withdrew her gaze and slowly crouched down, staring at the girl in the tombstone portrait. “Sorry you had to see someone so unpleasant.”
She pulled out two smooth, round chess pieces one black, one white from her pocket and placed them before the tombstone.
“I came in a hurry and didn’t bring flowers, only these two chess pieces. I hope you like them.”
“Stupid of me, of course you’d like them.”
“I just wonder if there’s anyone to play chess with you over there.”
“Not long ago, Mom and the others visited a Go dojo. They said with your talent, the seven-year-old you would’ve already joined and started making a name for yourself. They wanted to see if they could run into you…”
“But I think you’re still in this world, aren’t you? You just got lost again and forgot the way home, right? I’ve burned so many maps for you, did you get them? When you have time, send me or Mom a dream, okay?”
–
“Achoo!”
After sneezing violently several times, Shang Shiqian rubbed her nose and scanned the room for tissues.
Her eyes darted around until she spotted a tissue box buried under a stack of files, though the dust-covered sheets made her suspect her nose was cleaner than the paper itself.
A hand lifted the files, and the dusty tissue was plucked out to wipe the desk.
A woman in a black T-shirt and camouflage pants said, “This place hasn’t been cleaned in ages, it’s pretty dusty. If it’s too much, you can wait outside for a bit.”
Shang Shiqian obediently stepped out.
The woman in black snorted. “Seriously? You’re just gonna leave? Couldn’t you lend a hand?”
Shang Shiqian entered again, then sneezed three times in a row, the last sneeze even sent snot flying.
The woman in the black T-shirt found the sight too disgusting to bear. She quickly grabbed some tissues for her and told her to wash her face and hands in the bathroom.
By the time Shang Shiqian returned, the woman had already tidied up the tables and chairs inside.
She pulled out a notebook, glanced at Shang Shiqian, and said, “Sit.”
Shang Shiqian obediently sat down.
“What’s your name? Where do you live? Who else is in your family? Do you have any identification? What are your family’s contact details…”
A barrage of questions followed, but Shang Shiqian couldn’t answer a single one, sitting as silent as a mute.
The woman in the black T-shirt wasn’t in a hurry, idly clicking the retractable pen in her hand.
Curious, Shang Shiqian asked instead, “Are you a police officer?”
The woman closed her notebook, her expression sour, before finally replying after a long pause, “I used to be.”
“Oh.” Shang Shiqian’s gaze drifted to the “Forest Patrol Duty Roster” on the wall. “Your name is Xiao Luomeng?”
The woman in the black T-shirt said, “Right now, I’m the one asking the questions, not you. Confession brings leniency, resistance brings severity.”
Shang Shiqian really wanted to confess, but she must have been erased from official records by now, right? There’d be no trace of her.
“My name is Shang Shiqian, Shang as in Shang Yang, Shiqian as in ‘time passes and things change.’ Other than my name, I don’t remember anything.”
Xiao Luomeng stared at her, and she met the gaze calmly.
After a long silence, Xiao Luomeng said, “Let’s go.”
Shang Shiqian asked, “Where to?”
“The police station.”
Female Secretary: President Wei is really, unhinged!!!
Shang Si: Off to the police station, how thrilling.
President Wei: …
