- Chapter 58.1 - The Villainess in a Romance Novel (11)
Jiang Mengyu Doesn’t Like the Her of This Lifetime.
The shock in Wen Lingyi’s eyes was unmistakable.
Gu Lanqiu: “…Let’s go inside first.”
She knew what Wen Lingyi wanted to ask, but with Jiang Mengyu present, Gu Lanqiu couldn’t answer.
The three of them walked in together. The private restaurant was exquisitely decorated small bridges over flowing water, mist curling in the air carrying a faint sense of tranquility and serenity.
A server led them to a private room near the courtyard. Gu Lanqiu turned to Jiang Mengyu, “You go in first.”
Jiang Mengyu lowered her eyes and nodded, “Alright.”
She was obedient, not questioning Gu Lanqiu’s decision in the slightest.
Wen Lingyi watched their interaction with wide eyes. Once Jiang Mengyu had entered, she pulled Gu Lanqiu a few steps toward the wooden bridge in the middle of the courtyard.
“No way, President Gu, you’re really…”
She gestured toward Jiang Mengyu’s direction with her chin.
“It’s not what you think,” Gu Lanqiu said softly.
Wen Lingyi: “Is she the girl you mentioned to me last time?”
She always had a knack for cutting straight to the heart of the matter.
“Mm.” Gu Lanqiu didn’t deny it.
Wen Lingyi clicked her tongue, “And you say it’s not what I think??”
The evening breeze lifted Gu Lanqiu’s long hair. She remained silent, her mature and striking face betraying no hint of shame.
Wen Lingyi studied her friend standing before her, her gaze sweeping over Gu Lanqiu’s face.
“Do you know who she is?”
Had Gu Lanqiu lost her mind?
How could she get involved with her nephew’s ex-girlfriend?
Wen Lingyi didn’t even dare imagine the uproar this would cause if word got out.
Gu Lanqiu’s reputation would undoubtedly take a hit.
Gu Lanqiu averted her eyes, “I know.”
Wen Lingyi frowned, “Then why…”
Gu Lanqiu: “She has nothing to do with Zeyan now. They’ve already broken up.”
Wen Lingyi took a deep breath, “When people talk about this, they won’t care that she and Xu Zeyan have broken up. They’ll still see her as connected to him.”
Gu Lanqiu couldn’t possibly be unaware of this. Did she really not care about her reputation anymore?
Wen Lingyi recalled the last time she’d seen Gu Lanqiu, when Gu Lanqiu had firmly insisted she didn’t like Jiang Mengyu.
That wasn’t so long ago.
The way Gu Lanqiu had instinctively defended herself just now didn’t seem like someone who was indifferent to Jiang Mengyu.
Wen Lingyi never imagined the woman who’d changed Gu Lanqiu’s sexual orientation would be Jiang Mengyu. Had she known, she would never have encouraged Gu Lanqiu to follow her heart last time.
Seeing Gu Lanqiu fall silent, Wen Lingyi couldn’t help but shake her head, “Lanqiu, you’ve really fallen for her.”
Gu Lanqiu: “…I haven’t.”
Wen Lingyi stared straight at her, “Do you even believe that yourself?”
Gu Lanqiu exhaled softly, “Didn’t I tell you last time?”
Only by smelling Jiang Mengyu’s scent could she sleep well.
Wen Lingyi: “So?”
“Are you planning to sleep with her for the rest of your life?”
Even as Gu Lanqiu grew silent at her words, Wen Lingyi pressed on, “What if she falls for someone else in the future?”
“Are you really going to sleep between a married couple?”
Gu Lanqiu instinctively retorted, “She won’t.”
Wen Lingyi scoffed, “How can you be so sure she won’t?”
“People change, Lanqiu.”
“Just like you, if I had told you before that you’d fall for Xu Zeyan’s ex-girlfriend, would you have believed me?”
Gu Lanqiu wanted to say she didn’t like Jiang Mengyu, but the words stuck in her throat, lingering unspoken.
Wen Lingyi’s words served as a wake-up call. Gu Lanqiu had always thought that since it was only a month, she could just play along with Jiang Mengyu. Once Markel arrived in China, she would have him try to hypnotize Jiang Mengyu to forget the events of her past life.
Back then, Gu Lanqiu hadn’t considered that Jiang Mengyu’s scent could cure her insomnia.
If she stuck to her original plan, would Jiang Mengyu after losing her memories still be willing to sleep beside her?
Gu Lanqiu didn’t even need to think. The answer surfaced instantly in her mind.
She wouldn’t.
Gu Lanqiu had seen how Jiang Mengyu treated others. There was no way she would grow close to someone she didn’t like.
Her fingers unconsciously dug into her palm as Wen Lingyi’s rambling words tangled her thoughts into a mess.
Jiang Mengyu stood by the window, sipping from her teacup. Through the wooden lattice, she could vaguely make out the figures of Gu Lanqiu and Wen Lingyi.
Wen Lingyi seemed to be saying something to Gu Lanqiu, but the latter remained silent.
The shadows of the courtyard trees swayed in the wind, casting dappled light over Gu Lanqiu. Though Jiang Mengyu couldn’t hear what was being said, she could sense the turmoil and heaviness in Gu Lanqiu’s demeanor.
After one last glance, she turned and returned to her seat at the table.
Gu Lanqiu seemed to sense something, but when she looked toward the window, there was no one there.
“I’m talking to you, what are you looking at?” Wen Lingyi asked, displeased.
She followed Gu Lanqiu’s gaze but saw nothing.
“I know,” Gu Lanqiu cut her off. “Let’s go inside.”
It was clear Gu Lanqiu didn’t want to discuss it further.
Wen Lingyi knew her well enough to understand that Gu Lanqiu disliked being pressured. Her reminder could only go so far any more, and Gu Lanqiu would grow annoyed.
“Fine.”
Wen Lingyi trusted that Gu Lanqiu knew her limits. She was sure Gu Lanqiu had already considered everything she’d just said, yet she still chose to proceed this way…
Suddenly, Wen Lingyi grew curious. What kind of charm did Jiang Mengyu possess to make Gu Lanqiu act so recklessly?
Wen Lingyi had originally made plans with someone else, but she canceled last minute, forcing her way into Jiang Mengyu and Gu Lanqiu’s private space.
Gu Lanqiu didn’t object, so Jiang Mengyu naturally didn’t refuse either.
Her attitude toward Wen Lingyi was polite yet distant. Aside from greeting her initially with a brief glance, Jiang Mengyu’s attention remained fixed on Gu Lanqiu, hardly wavering.
The meal passed in near silence.
Wen Lingyi barely spoke throughout, quietly observing the two.
Jiang Mengyu wasn’t talkative either, but she was incredibly attentive, always anticipating Gu Lanqiu’s needs before she even realized them herself. Sometimes, Jiang Mengyu’s hand would reach out before Gu Lanqiu had even reacted.
Wen Lingyi marveled inwardly. No wonder Gu Lanqiu liked Jiang Mengyu, she was just too considerate.
After the meal, Gu Lanqiu prepared to take Jiang Mengyu back to Beiyuan.
Before parting, Wen Lingyi patted Gu Lanqiu’s shoulder. “You… sigh.”
She had already said everything she needed to say earlier. Wen Lingyi only hoped that Gu Lanqiu would be alright.
But thinking about how Jiang Mengyu doted on Gu Lanqiu, while Gu Lanqiu refused to even acknowledge her own feelings, Wen Lingyi couldn’t shake the feeling that their relationship wouldn’t progress smoothly.
She hoped it was just her imagination.
On the ride back, Gu Lanqiu closed her eyes, feigning sleep.
Jiang Mengyu stared at her profile and asked, “Lanqiu, does Miss Wen dislike me?”
Gu Lanqiu opened her eyes. “No.”
She paused, then added, “What does it matter whether she likes you or not?”
Jiang Mengyu didn’t see Wen Lingyi often anyway. Even if Wen Lingyi didn’t like her, it wouldn’t affect her.
Jiang Mengyu pursed her lips. “But she’s your friend.”
[What if Wen Lingyi speaks ill of me in front of Lanqiu?]
[Would Lanqiu distance herself from me because of that?]
Gu Lanqiu was suddenly reminded of Wen Lingyi’s earlier words, especially her firm declaration, “You’ve truly fallen for her.” She felt momentarily dazed.
Did she really like Jiang Mengyu?
At this thought, Gu Lanqiu frowned slightly and quietly studied Jiang Mengyu for a few seconds. Then, abruptly, she raised her hand, her fingertips inching closer to Jiang Mengyu’s cheek.
Jiang Mengyu remained still, allowing Gu Lanqiu to approach.
The backseat was dimly lit, half of Jiang Mengyu’s face obscured in shadow. Though the emotions in her eyes weren’t entirely clear, Gu Lanqiu could feel her gaze fixed intently on her face.
Cool fingertips brushed against Jiang Mengyu’s brow. Gu Lanqiu gently tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear, her fingers trailing along Jiang Mengyu’s cheek, leaving a tingling sensation in their wake.
Her heart remained steady and calm, without any discomfort.
She truly could accept Jiang Mengyu more than she had thought.
Just as she was about to withdraw her hand, her fingers were suddenly caught. Gu Lanqiu lifted her gaze to meet Jiang Mengyu’s deep, dark eyes. Her expression remained indifferent. “What’s wrong?”
Jiang Mengyu stared at her intently. “What does this mean?”
Gu Lanqiu rarely initiated closeness with Jiang Mengyu. More often, it was Jiang Mengyu who drew near, while Gu Lanqiu neither rejected nor accepted her advances.
“Nothing,” Gu Lanqiu said. “Your hair was messy.”
Given Gu Lanqiu’s personality, she wouldn’t normally care whether Jiang Mengyu’s hair was messy or not.
It was just an excuse.
Jiang Mengyu slowly lowered her head, her lips drawing closer to Gu Lanqiu’s fingers. Her movements were deliberate, giving Gu Lanqiu ample time to pull away.
Gu Lanqiu guessed her intention. Her fingers twitched slightly, as if to resist, but in the end, she didn’t withdraw her hand as Jiang Mengyu’s soft kiss landed lightly upon it.
A fleeting touch.
The warmth came and went so quickly it might have been Gu Lanqiu’s imagination.
Gu Lanqiu silently watched Jiang Mengyu.
Jiang Mengyu tilted her head, pressing her cheek into Gu Lanqiu’s palm. “Lanqiu.”
Her voice was soft and lingering, carrying an unspoken intensity. “I like you so much.”
Gu Lanqiu remained quiet for a long moment before murmuring in response:
“Mm.”
The shower in the guest bedroom was broken.
Jiang Mengyu had to cut her bath short. Wrapped in a towel, she stepped out of the bathroom, dripping wet.
“Lan Qiu.” Jiang Mengyu spoke while sniffing slightly.
The scent of shower gel and shampoo still lingered on her, the faint jasmine fragrance now almost imperceptible. Yet Gu Lanqiu seemed to still catch a whiff of it.
Jiang Mengyu’s long hair continued to drip, her body still damp. Water had accidentally gotten into her eyes, leaving them glistening and slightly reddened. She looked like a drenched puppy, pitiful and helpless as she gazed at Gu Lanqiu.
Gu Lanqiu only glanced at her twice before averting her eyes.
“Go to my room.”
There was actually another bathroom downstairs, but neither of them mentioned it.
Jiang Mengyu carried her clothes into the master bedroom.
She continued her shower, the faint sound of running water drifting out, inexplicably filling the room with an ambiguous atmosphere.
After her bath, Jiang Mengyu changed into the new nightgown she had bought that day. The dark purple silk fabric accentuated her slender and graceful figure. Her long hair, now dried, cascaded loosely down her back, exposing her delicate neck and arms to the air.
System No. 031 inexplicably felt that its host was like a peacock showing off.
So was this her goal in deliberately breaking the showerhead?
When Jiang Mengyu stepped out, Gu Lanqiu was sitting absentmindedly by the floor-to-ceiling window, her back turned, revealing only one hand hanging in the air.
The very hand Jiang Mengyu had kissed just hours before.
Jiang Mengyu walked toward Gu Lanqiu. As she got closer, she noticed how unusually relaxed Gu Lanqiu looked.
She was reclining on the sofa with her legs crossed, eyes half-lidded, the undone collar of her shirt revealing glimpses of her elegant collarbones.
“Lan Qiu.”
Jiang Mengyu called softly.
Gu Lanqiu lifted her gaze to look at her, pausing slightly when she took in Jiang Mengyu’s current attire.
“Finished showering?”
“Mhm.” Jiang Mengyu stopped in front of Gu Lanqiu. “Drying my hair took some time.”
Gu Lanqiu uncrossed her legs and stood up. She was still wearing her daytime outfit, a shirt tucked into a mermaid skirt, her waist so slender it seemed as if it could snap with a touch, her legs straight and long.
As she rose, a woody rose fragrance wafted toward Jiang Mengyu.
Jiang Mengyu reached out to touch Gu Lanqiu’s earlobe. Gu Lanqiu didn’t flinch, only feeling a light pinch before Jiang Mengyu withdrew her hand, revealing an earring in her palm.
“It was loose,” Jiang Mengyu explained.
“Mhm.” Gu Lanqiu turned and walked toward the bathroom.
Jiang Mengyu toyed with the earring in her hand, the sapphire embedded in it glinting brilliantly under the light.
