- Chapter 55.1 - The Villainess in a Romance Novel (8)
“Darling, sleep a little longer.”
Only now did Gu Lanqiu realize that her nightgown had ridden up at some point, and as Jiang Mengyu’s hand slid downward, her palm came into direct contact with Gu Lanqiu’s bare thigh.
Unhindered.
Her fingertips were too cold, sending a shiver through Gu Lanqiu.
An inexplicable sense of danger surged within her, and instinct drove Gu Lanqiu to struggle fiercely. “Jiang Mengyu!”
Her long hair was disheveled, and a rare trace of confusion flickered in those always calm and composed eyes.
“Lanqiu,” Jiang Mengyu withdrew her hand from Gu Lanqiu’s leg and instead cupped her face. “I’ve missed you so much.”
“Loose has been looking for you too.”
She rambled on, her voice slightly slurred. “If only this dream could last forever.”
Even now, she still believed she was dreaming.
Gu Lanqiu took a deep breath. “Let go.”
Jiang Mengyu didn’t release her immediately but instead pressed her cheek closer.
Gu Lanqiu couldn’t make out her expression, but the scent of jasmine grew stronger, and Jiang Mengyu’s ragged, hurried breaths filled her ears.
The darkness made everything feel uncontrollable. With sight obscured, her other senses sharpened. Gu Lanqiu didn’t know what Jiang Mengyu intended to do. She held her breath slightly, her expression darkening like storm clouds.
Then, without warning, a soft touch grazed her cheek. It took Gu Lanqiu two full seconds to realize it had been Jiang Mengyu’s lips.
“Jiang Mengyu!”
Before she could finish, a finger pressed against her lips. Jiang Mengyu stroked Gu Lanqiu’s face gently, as if soothing a child. “Sleep, Lanqiu.”
She clung to Gu Lanqiu like a large stuffed toy, holding her so tightly that escape was impossible.
The sofa wasn’t spacious. With two people lying on it, they had to press close to avoid falling off.
Jiang Mengyu wrapped her arms around Gu Lanqiu, resting her head against her shoulder, her voice low and tender. “Lanqiu, I love you.”
Gu Lanqiu let out a silent, cold laugh. Jiang Mengyu had not only touched her leg but also kissed her cheek. In her thirty-some years of life, no one had ever dared to take such liberties with her.
Rage and disbelief churned in her chest, and she struggled again, but Jiang Mengyu’s grip was unyielding.
The sensation of another person’s breath so close made Gu Lanqiu’s skin prickle.
She forced herself to steady her heartbeat, deciding to wait until Jiang Mengyu fell asleep before throwing her out.
When the woman in her arms finally stilled, Jiang Mengyu wasn’t surprised.
Gu Lanqiu cared too much about appearances. She couldn’t bring herself to push her away in a more undignified manner, nor did she want to provoke Jiang Mengyu into doing something even more reckless. So, for now, she had no choice but to relent.
Jiang Mengyu tightened her embrace, closing her eyes, her mind finally at peace, no unwelcome voices lingered.
Gu Lanqiu waited for Jiang Mengyu to loosen her hold, discomfort gnawing at her. Yet, against her will, her body adapted to Jiang Mengyu’s embrace faster than her mind could protest.
Guan Lanqiu wasn’t accustomed to sharing a bed with anyone, yet inexplicably, she didn’t dislike Jiang Mengyu’s presence. In fact, her body felt an unfamiliar sense of relaxation.
Before Jiang Mengyu even fell asleep, Guan Lanqiu’s eyelids grew heavy in the faint scent of jasmine.
Days of exhaustion and sleeplessness had long worn her body down. Now that she finally relaxed, drowsiness immediately overwhelmed her mind.
She tried to resist the urge to sleep, but her consciousness grew increasingly hazy until, at some point, she sank into a deep slumber.
Jiang Mengyu opened her eyes. By the dim moonlight, she saw the person in her arms had already fallen asleep.
This was just an ordinary modern world, no ABO dynamics existed here. Yet, Guan Lanqiu could still smell the pheromones from Jiang Mengyu’s previous world.
Once could be dismissed as coincidence, but twice in a row? Jiang Mengyu couldn’t convince herself it was mere chance.
Sister, is it really you?
When Guan Lanqiu woke up, daylight had long since flooded the room.
Her body felt warm, as if soaked in a soothing bath. She squinted against the light and shifted slightly, only to realize something was still draped over her waist.
Her awareness snapped back instantly, memories rushing in last night’s events flooding her mind.
Guan Lanqiu immediately sat up. With a cold expression, she pushed Jiang Mengyu away, the lingering warmth of another person on her skin making it hard to believe she had actually spent the night curled up with Jiang Mengyu on that tiny sofa.
How could such a cramped space where she couldn’t even stretch her legs properly compare to her custom-made mattress? Yet, despite tossing and turning in bed for nights, she had somehow slept soundly for the first time in days on that sofa.
The renewed energy in her body constantly reminded her: she should have been uncomfortable, yet last night, she had slept more deeply than she had alone.
Was it because of Jiang Mengyu’s scent?
Jiang Mengyu stirred awake at the movement, frowning as she blinked away lingering drowsiness. “Lanqiu?”
Guan Lanqiu stared at her impassively. “Get up. Get out.”
Kicking me out right after sleeping together?
Jiang Mengyu propped herself up, her voice still rough with sleep. “What’s wrong?”
“Don’t make me say it a third time. Out.”
The sky had cleared, warm sunlight spilling into the room, bright enough for Jiang Mengyu to see the icy detachment on Guan Lanqiu’s face as if she were some unwelcome nuisance.
Just minutes ago, they had been wrapped in each other’s warmth.
Barefoot, Jiang Mengyu stood, but Guan Lanqiu didn’t so much as glance down, her dark gaze fixed unwaveringly on Jiang Mengyu’s eyes.
Her rejection was unmistakable.
Jiang Mengyu lowered her eyes. “Then I’ll go.”
Guan Lanqiu said nothing. Not a single word, even as Jiang Mengyu stepped out and closed the door behind her.
Jiang Mengyu glanced at her palm. She had half-expected Guan Lanqiu to slap her in anger.
By the time Jiang Mengyu changed and went downstairs, Guan Lanqiu was already at the entryway, slipping on her shoes.
She had changed into a fresh outfit, a white blouse and a sleek black mermaid skirt, polished yet undeniably alluring. The only thing colder than her attire was her gaze, sharp and scrutinizing, as if looking down from a height.
Glancing briefly at Jiang Mengyu, Gu Lanqiu averted her gaze. She didn’t look at her again, instead bending down to change into her high heels, picking up her watch from the hallway cabinet and putting it on, then preparing to leave.
In that brief moment, Jiang Mengyu had already stepped in front of Gu Lanqiu. “Lanqiu.”
Gu Lanqiu looked at her coldly. “What is it?”
Jiang Mengyu pursed her lips. “About last night… it was my fault.”
Gu Lanqiu scoffed. “So you haven’t lost your memory after all.”
Strictly speaking, Jiang Mengyu hadn’t done anything particularly wrong. It was just that Gu Lanqiu hated the feeling of being forced, yet last night, she had inexplicably fallen asleep and slept deeply at that.
Having contradicted herself, Gu Lanqiu could only suppress her anger, with nowhere to direct it.
“I always lose control of myself,” Jiang Mengyu said, hanging her head. “Lanqiu, you can be angry, you can scold me or hit me, just don’t abandon me, okay?”
Gu Lanqiu had indeed planned to keep giving Jiang Mengyu the cold shoulder, at least for the next few days. She didn’t want to see her at all.
“Miss Jiang, I’m tired of hearing your promises.”
Jiang Mengyu’s words were as useless as empty air. She’d make earnest assurances, only to forget them the next moment.
“That’s enough. I have work to do at the company. I’m leaving.”
Gu Lanqiu turned to walk away, but hurried footsteps sounded behind her, Jiang Mengyu had caught up.
Out of the corner of her eye, Gu Lanqiu saw Jiang Mengyu raise her hand, but for some reason, she didn’t reach out to stop her. Instead, she stood silently in place, watching as Gu Lanqiu walked away.
Gu Lanqiu didn’t soften. She strode to the car door, bent down, and got in.
Jiang Mengyu covered her mouth and coughed twice, watching until Gu Lanqiu’s Cayenne was completely out of sight before turning back inside.
As expected, Gu Lanqiu didn’t return that night.
Jiang Mengyu sat by the floor-to-ceiling window, slowly sipping the fig and pork rib soup that the housekeeper, Aunt Zhang, had prepared. She sank into the armchair, her gaze fixed outside the window, her expression calm and distant, lost in thought.
Aunt Zhang watched Jiang Mengyu’s back, recalling the faint argument she’d overheard that morning between Jiang Mengyu and President Gu.
She didn’t fully understand the nature of their relationship, she’d assumed they were sisters, but the way President Gu treated Jiang Mengyu didn’t quite fit that idea.
Ah, the conflicts between employers were none of her business as an outsider. Still, Jiang Mengyu looked pitiful. She was already ill, and if she dwelled too much on her worries, it wouldn’t do her any good.
Aunt Zhang shook her head and sighed silently.
After finishing the soup, Jiang Mengyu returned to her room.
In truth, the original character had plenty of friends, and many had messaged her over the past few days. But Jiang Mengyu hadn’t replied to any of them except for Madam Jiang’s messages, which she answered separately.
That Madam Jiang had held back this long was already quite remarkable.
The original novel described Madam Jiang as someone who excelled at stirring up trouble, but she genuinely cared for her biological daughter and had her best interests at heart.
Even though Jiang Mengyu’s actions had completely disrupted their previous plans, Madam Jiang had still cooperated without causing any trouble.
Since Gu Lanqiu hadn’t told her to keep it a secret, Jiang Mengyu informed Madam Jiang that she was staying at Beiyuan.
[Madam Jiang: ?]
Madam Jiang grew increasingly uneasy. Even if Gu Lanqiu wanted to thank Meng Yu for saving her, was it really necessary to arrange for her to stay at her own villa?
The Zhou family wouldn’t mistreat Meng Yu, and Zhou Xiang had already promised to protect her from Xu Zeyan’s bullying.
Gu Lanqiu’s actions, why did they resemble those of people who kept “golden canaries” as lovers?
Suddenly, Madam Jiang recalled Jiang Meng Yu’s words at the hospital: “I love her.” A shiver ran down her spine.
[Madam Jiang: What exactly is your relationship?]
She had always assumed Jiang Meng Yu was joking, how could two women possibly be together?
It was simply absurd.
Jiang Meng Yu leisurely typed back: [I’m pursuing her. She hasn’t agreed yet.]
After sending the message, it took a long time before Madam Jiang replied.
[Madam Jiang: ???]
Jiang Meng Yu didn’t explain further. She stood by the window, gazing at the night outside. The weather forecast said it would rain again tonight.
She just wondered if there would be thunder again.
Gu Lanqiu couldn’t sleep.
She was staying at another apartment tonight. Though she had often rested here before, for some reason, lying in bed now, her mind was unusually clear.
She grabbed her phone from the nightstand, it was already 1:30 a.m.
Rubbing her throbbing temples, Gu Lanqiu threw off the covers and got out of bed. As she walked toward the walk-in closet, she dialed her friend Wen Lingyi.
The call connected quickly.
Wen Lingyi’s voice was drowsy. “Boss Gu, calling me in the middle of the night, what’s the matter?”
“Come out for a drink,” Gu Lanqiu said succinctly.
Wen Lingyi yawned and joked, “What, did you get your heart broken?”
Gu Lanqiu paused, recalling Jiang Meng Yu’s kiss on her cheek, and for a moment, she didn’t respond.
Wen Lingyi instantly perked up. “Wait, seriously?”
But wasn’t Gu Lanqiu perpetually single?
Hadn’t heard about her getting close to any man recently either.
Wen Lingyi didn’t think of other possibilities just yet.
Gu Lanqiu sidestepped the question, giving Wen Lingyi an address before hanging up.
Eager for gossip, Wen Lingyi arrived faster than anyone. By the time Gu Lanqiu parked at the bar’s entrance, Wen Lingyi’s car was already there.
“Well, well, Boss Gu,” Wen Lingyi said with a grin.
She frequented this bar and even had a private room reserved for her. The two headed straight to the third floor.
The moment they entered the room, Wen Lingyi couldn’t hold back. “So, who is it?”
Gu Lanqiu remained silent.
Wen Lingyi waved off the nearby attendant. “We’ll take care of ourselves. You can leave.”
Once everyone was gone, she pressed again, “Now can you tell me?”
Gu Lanqiu took a sip from her glass. The sharp burn of the alcohol only sharpened her mind. Images from last night replayed in her head, she could even recall the tenderness and sweetness in Jiang Meng Yu’s voice when she called her name.
She closed her eyes briefly. “Who it is doesn’t matter.”
“Then how far have you two gone?” Wen Lingyi cut straight to the point.
Gu Lanqiu: “…She kissed my cheek.”
Wen Lingyi: “?”
“That’s it?”
She hadn’t sacrificed her sleep to hear about some innocent schoolgirl crush. She wanted the juicy, adult stuff!
Gu Lanqiu frowned. “Without my consent, no matter how far things go, it’s still an offense to me.”
“Is it still forced love?”
Wen Lingyi hissed, “You didn’t hit her?”
“She was injured,” Gu Lanqiu replied flatly. “It’s somewhat related to me.”
“Oh, I see,” Wen Lingyi’s eyes darted around. “And then?”
“There is no ‘and then.'” Gu Lanqiu poured herself another drink. “I don’t really want to see her right now.”
Honestly, Wen Lingyi didn’t think it was that big of a deal, but Gu Lanqiu had a point man, who didn’t respect women’s boundaries were indeed unacceptable. “Then just give her the cold shoulder for a while. Men are all cheap, you can’t be too nice to them.”
