- Chapter 51.1 - The Villainess in a Romance Novel (4)
Gu Lanqiu Could Try Playing Along with Jiang Mengyu.
System 031 was nearly scared out of its wits by Jiang Mengyu.
Even after its host was promptly rushed into the emergency room, it still hadn’t fully recovered from the shock.
Did the host really stab herself with a knife?!
Taking a deep breath to calm its racing heart, System 031 recalled that this host had once even used a bomb to blow herself up so perhaps it shouldn’t be all that surprised.
The host was ruthless toward others, but even more ruthless toward herself.
In truth, Jiang Mengyu had carefully controlled the angle of the knife. Though it appeared dangerously close to her heart, it hadn’t actually pierced it. Even if the caregiver hadn’t intervened, she wouldn’t have been in any real danger.
Still, the wound was real, and she had lost a considerable amount of blood. Her already pale face became even more ghastly and bloodless after the ordeal.
Given the severity of the situation, Gu Lanqiu was obligated, both legally and morally to inform the Zhou family.
Jiang Mengyu’s mother and Zhou’s father arrived quickly. Upon hearing that Jiang Mengyu had secretly hidden a craft knife to attempt suicide, Jiang’s mother nearly fainted. “Impossible!”
She knew her daughter better than anyone. Though Jiang Mengyu was bold, she wasn’t bold enough to throw her life away especially not when she hadn’t yet secured all the wealth and status she desired. What reason could she possibly have to kill herself?
Gu Lanqiu, aware of her disbelief, simply handed her the surveillance footage.
Jiang’s mother broke down in tears, but Zhou’s father gave Gu Lanqiu a meaningful glance. “President Gu, it seems Mengyu was calling out your name?”
And the things she had said, they carried an unusual implication.
Jiang’s mother also snapped back to reality. The events of the past two days had been beyond her expectations. Jiang Mengyu had suddenly broken off her engagement with Xu Zeyan, and now, before attempting suicide, she had called out Gu Lanqiu’s name. Could it be that she and Gu Lanqiu…
What exactly was Jiang Mengyu trying to do?
Why hadn’t she given her mother any warning?
Gu Lanqiu was also in a foul mood, her expression dark and unreadable.
What could she even say?
That ever since saving her, Jiang Mengyu had claimed to be reborn, insisting that in her past life, they had been lovers and now she wanted to resume that relationship?
Gu Lanqiu couldn’t bring herself to say it.
For one, there was no guarantee Jiang’s mother or Zhou’s father would believe it. And then there was the fact that Jiang Mengyu had been Xu Zeyan’s fiancée.
Who was Xu Zeyan? Gu Lanqiu’s nephew!
By that logic, Jiang Mengyu should even be calling Gu Lanqiu “Aunt.”
An aunt getting involved with her nephew’s ex-fiancée, how would that sound to outsiders?
Gu Lanqiu didn’t care about her reputation, but she wasn’t about to take the blame for something she hadn’t done.
Besides, if there really was anything between them, it should be Jiang Mengyu who explained it to her mother not Gu Lanqiu.
Gu Lanqiu remained silent, and Zhou’s father didn’t press further. He had already gained significant benefits from Gu Lanqiu and wasn’t in a position to openly clash with her at least not yet.
The group waited outside the emergency room for several hours before the operation light finally turned off.
Seeing Jiang Mengyu unconscious as she was wheeled out, Jiang’s mother’s eyes welled up again. “Mengyu!”
“My daughter was perfectly fine just days ago, preparing for her next art exhibition. How did things turn out like this in such a short time?”
Her tone carried a veiled accusation, and it was clear who she was directing it at.
Secretary Zhao wanted to speak up to explain on Gu Lanqiu’s behalf, but Gu Lanqiu stopped her with a sidelong glance.
No matter what, Jiang Mengyu had indeed gotten injured under her watch. Gu Lanqiu closed her eyes wearily. “I’ll talk to her properly once she wakes up.”
Talk about what?
Mr. Zhou’s eyes darkened with thought, it seemed something had indeed happened between Mengyu and Gu Lanqiu that they weren’t aware of.
Mrs. Jiang thought the same.
Though she appeared on the verge of collapsing from crying, her mind was actually sharp and clear.
Jiang Mengyu was clearly playing a long game. Though Mrs. Jiang didn’t know the specifics of her plan, she could only strive to secure the greatest advantage for her based on the current situation.
After all, the incident had happened under Gu Lanqiu’s care, she had to take responsibility!
For several people, this was a sleepless night.
Jiang Mengyu, however, had been under general anesthesia during surgery and slept soundly.
But as the anesthesia gradually wore off, she began murmuring deliriously.
“Lanqiu… Lanqiu…”
“Don’t go!”
Mrs. Jiang tightly grasped Jiang Mengyu’s hand. “Mengyu, what are you saying?”
Mr. Zhou turned to stare at Gu Lanqiu, but her reaction was inscrutable. Her face showed little emotion, her dark eyes silently fixed on Jiang Mengyu.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t say anything else, only repeating Gu Lanqiu’s name over and over, her hoarse voice laced with a despair that tugged at the heart.
Her thoughts were also a chaotic mess.
From the fragments of her subconscious, Gu Lanqiu caught a few key words.
I won’t leave, fire get out.
Had their past selves encountered a fire, and had she given Jiang Mengyu the chance to escape while she herself perished in the flames?
Gu Lanqiu didn’t believe she was the self-sacrificing type.
Still, Jiang Mengyu’s unconscious state didn’t seem feigned anesthesia could indeed cause people to babble uncontrollably.
But precisely because these words might be true, Gu Lanqiu found them all the more surreal.
Would she really fall for a woman like Jiang Mengyu someone who relied on petty schemes and craved vanity?
Her gaze grew more probing as she studied Jiang Mengyu intently, her eyes settling on Jiang Mengyu’s weakly trembling hand.
Her fingertips lifted several times, only to drop limply back onto the bed just like when she had raised her hand before driving the knife into her own chest, as if trying to grasp something.
What exactly was she thinking?
By the time Jiang Mengyu woke again, daylight had fully broken.
The room’s air conditioning was set to a comfortable temperature neither too cold nor too warm. The sunlight streaming through the window made her blink dizzily, forcing her to squint.
A shadow soon fell over her.
“You’re awake.”
The scene felt eerily familiar.
Jiang Mengyu stared fixedly at the face before her. After a few seconds, she struggled to lift her hand. “Lanqiu… you’ve finally… come for me?”
Gu Lanqiu’s expression remained calm. “Sorry to disappoint, but I’m still alive and so are you.”
Jiang Mengyu tried to push herself up, but the sharp pain in her chest made her grimace. “What happened to me?”
“You don’t remember last night?” Gu Lanqiu pressed a hand to Jiang Mengyu’s shoulder, holding her down. “Stay still, don’t move around.”
She could barely even sit up now. The nurse thoughtfully brought a straw, and Jiang Mengyu tilted her head to take a few sips of warm water, finally soothing her parched throat.
The pain in her chest grew increasingly intense, as if Jiang Mengyu had only just fully awakened. Lowering her eyes, she murmured softly, “I’m sorry.”
Her face was as pale as paper, so frail it seemed a gust of wind could knock her over.
Gu Lanqiu sat down in the chair by the hospital bed. “Seems you haven’t forgotten.”
Her throat itched terribly. Jiang Mengyu wanted to cough but accidentally tugged at her wound, making the pain even more unbearable.
She gasped heavily, her fingers clutching the sheets beneath her. From holding her breath, a faint flush finally appeared on her cheeks.
Gu Lanqiu watched silently, unmoving.
It took a long while before Jiang Mengyu’s body gradually relaxed, though her voice still carried ragged breaths. “I’ve caused you trouble.”
Her tone was polite, a stark contrast to the way she had desperately called Gu Lanqiu’s name the night before.
“Not exactly trouble,” Gu Lanqiu crossed her legs, traces of exhaustion visible in her eyes. “But Mrs. Jiang is furious.”
Jiang Mengyu paused. “I’ll explain it clearly to my mom.”
“How do you plan to explain it to her?”
Jiang Mengyu fell silent again. After a long moment, she whispered, “I’ll break off the engagement with Xu Zeyan.”
Gu Lanqiu tapped her fingers lightly on her knee. “Mrs. Jiang really wants you to marry Zeyan. You must have thought the same before, didn’t you?”
Before Jiang Mengyu could respond, Gu Lanqiu added, “Was that gold locket really yours?”
So she even knew about that.
Seeing the surprise in Jiang Mengyu’s eyes, Gu Lanqiu didn’t explain but continued, “Are you sure Mrs. Jiang will really agree to you breaking off the engagement with Zeyan?”
Jiang Mengyu pressed her lips together, silent for several seconds before murmuring, “But I don’t like him.”
“You’re right. I am selfish, greedy, and vain. That gold locket was also taken from Zhou Xinying.”
Jiang Mengyu stared fixedly at Gu Lanqiu, the ambition in her eyes laid bare before her. “Zhou Xiang dotes on me, but only because he loves my mom.”
A hint of mockery crept into Jiang Mengyu’s expression. “But does he really love my mom? No, he only loves the gentle, submissive facade she puts on.”
“If my mom showed her true self to him, would he still love her the way he does now?” Jiang Mengyu saw it all too clearly.
Precisely because she understood that everything before her was just an illusion of prosperity, Jiang Mengyu was even more determined to fight and seize. Only what she held tightly in her hands was real.
“To maintain this comfortable, wealthy life, my mom can keep wearing a mask to please Zhou Xiang. So can I.”
[Will Lanqiu think I’m a bad woman?]
[She must hate me even more now.]
[But I don’t want to pretend in front of her.]
[I want her to see the real me.]
Gu Lanqiu listened quietly. Though she had once mocked Jiang Mengyu for being materialistic, now, hearing these words, there was no trace of scorn on her face.
“Xu Zeyan is easier to placate than Zhou Xiang.” Jiang Mengyu averted her gaze. “When I said the gold locket was mine, he never doubted me for a second. Even though I couldn’t recall any childhood details, he chose to believe I’d forgotten due to trauma rather than investigate further.”
“Such a fool, yet he possesses everything I’ve ever dreamed of. Life truly isn’t fair.”
Calling someone a fool right in front of their aunt only Jiang Mengyu would dare to do something like that.
At this moment, the resentment in Jiang Mengyu’s heart was so overwhelming that even System 031 couldn’t tell whether she was acting or speaking her true feelings.
“But the more foolish he is, the better it is for me.”
Jiang Mengyu abruptly shifted the topic. “Lanqiu, I accounted for everything except for your accident.”
Gu Lanqiu was a mountain weighing down on Xu Zeyan. With her around, no matter what he did, he could never cause any real trouble.
Yet, in the original story, after the car accident, she withdrew behind the scenes, no longer intervening, even coldly watching as Xu Zeyan ran amok.
The accident had changed Gu Lanqiu’s personality or rather, it stripped away her pretense, revealing the ruthlessness buried deep within her.
That was why Jiang Mengyu was certain Gu Lanqiu was just like her. Her confession wouldn’t earn Gu Lanqiu’s scorn, if anything, it would make her find Jiang Mengyu even more intriguing.
Sure enough, the next second, System 031’s voice echoed in Jiang Mengyu’s mind.
[Ding! Target Gu Lanqiu’s favorability +5. Current total favorability: 152.]
System 031 wept tears of joy in its little black room. Finally, some progress!
