- Chapter 49.1 - The Villainess in a Romance Novel (2)
“Actually, I was reborn.”
Jiang Mengyu slept for a long time.
When she awoke from the haze, her head was spinning violently, and a wave of nausea rose in her chest. Jiang Mengyu furrowed her brows tightly, and the moment she opened her eyes, she inadvertently called out:
“Lan Qiu!”
Before her was the stark white ceiling of the hospital. Jiang Mengyu took a deep, heavy breath and was about to push herself up when a calm female voice suddenly sounded beside her.
“Miss Jiang.”
Turning her head, Jiang Mengyu saw Gu Lanqiu sitting cross-legged on a chair, gazing at her with composed eyes. “You’re awake.”
She was no longer wearing the shirt from last night. Instead, a soft woolen sweater accentuated her perfect proportions, her long hair loosely cascading down her back, lending her an air of casual elegance.
Jiang Mengyu stared intently at Gu Lanqiu’s face, scrutinizing her from head to toe. Only after confirming that there wasn’t a single scratch on her did she finally relax.
Gu Lanqiu took in every one of her reactions.
Setting down the documents in her hand, she asked, “Still feeling unwell?”
Jiang Mengyu wasn’t seriously injured, just a mild concussion. Even the doctor couldn’t help but remark on how lucky she was.
Jiang Mengyu shook her head. Her gaze never left Gu Lanqiu, her eyes brimming with too many emotions, as if she had countless things to say. But in the end, she merely lowered her eyelids slightly and remained silent.
A hint of curiosity flickered in Gu Lanqiu’s eyes.
She really did seem different from before.
Rising to her feet, Gu Lanqiu approached Jiang Mengyu, her figure casting a shadow over her.
“Thank you for saving me last night.”
Though her words were polite, the favorability meter remained unmoved.
“You’re welcome,” Jiang Mengyu replied softly.
Gu Lanqiu studied the girl before her, then paused before continuing, “I don’t like owing favors. Name what you want, and I’ll grant it.”
Jiang Mengyu looked up at Gu Lanqiu, pressed her lips together, and averted her eyes. “I didn’t save you for that.”
Gu Lanqiu didn’t ask why. She wasn’t interested in Jiang Mengyu’s motives only that she had helped her. In return, she would fulfill Jiang Mengyu’s request.
But beyond that, Gu Lanqiu had two more questions for her.
Jiang Mengyu’s face was unnaturally pale. Noticing this, Gu Lanqiu handed her a cup of warm water.
Jiang Mengyu stared at the hand so close to her, Gu Lanqiu’s nails a healthy pink, her fingers slender and delicate.
Not the withered, ghastly white described in the original text.
She took the cup and murmured, “Thank you.”
Gu Lanqiu observed her every move. Only after Jiang Mengyu had taken a sip did she speak again. “Zeyan said you want to break off the engagement?”
“Yes,” Jiang Mengyu admitted without hesitation.
Cradling the glass in both hands, she took another small sip before lifting her eyes to meet Gu Lanqiu’s once more, her gaze earnest and unwavering.
Gu Lanqiu saw not a trace of reluctance in her eyes. So it wasn’t a misunderstanding on Xu Zeyan’s part, Jiang Mengyu truly wanted to call off the engagement.
“Why?”
Gu Lanqiu wasn’t like Xu Zeyan, the kind of fool who judged people by appearances. She understood Jiang Mengyu far better than he ever could.
Though she possessed a charming and beautiful face, her mind wasn’t particularly sharp. Yet, her ambitions soared high. She clearly adored vanity and luxury but pretended to be aloof and refined on the surface.
Compared to Xu Zeyan himself, Jiang Mengyu was far more enamored with the wealth and status behind him.
Only Xu Zeyan couldn’t see it, still believing Jiang Mengyu truly loved him.
Gu Lanqiu was well aware of this but had no interest in intervening. Though Xu Zeyan was the only child left by her elder sister, she felt little affection for him. It was only because he was relatively obedient that she occasionally didn’t mind helping him.
If this was how she treated Xu Zeyan, her indifference toward Jiang Mengyu was even more pronounced.
So it was no surprise her favorability toward Jiang Mengyu was zero. In Gu Lanqiu’s eyes, Jiang Mengyu was merely an outsider, her virtues or flaws were irrelevant.
But now, this person had suddenly acted in a way completely contrary to Gu Lanqiu’s impression of her, even arriving at the perfect moment to help, as if she had foreseen the event. This made Gu Lanqiu deeply suspicious.
“He’s two-timing,” Jiang Mengyu said flatly, as if discussing something unrelated to herself.
“Isn’t that something you’ve known all along?” Gu Lanqiu countered.
Her reaction was equally calm, clearly already aware of Xu Zeyan’s indecision between Jiang Mengyu and Zhou Xinying.
But since none of the involved parties seemed bothered, Gu Lanqiu had no interest in meddling in their private affairs.
“I don’t want to tolerate it anymore.” Jiang Mengyu’s head was still wrapped in bandages, her lips pale, her cheeks gaunt with a fragile pallor, like a willow branch on the verge of snapping frail and delicate.
Gu Lanqiu paused but didn’t ask how she had come to this realization. Instead, she posed another question: “How did you know I’d be followed?”
Secretary Zhao had checked the dashcam footage from Xu Zeyan’s SUV. Jiang Mengyu had clearly arrived at the scene with purpose, even setting the navigation’s final destination to the exact spot of the accident.
This left Gu Lanqiu utterly perplexed.
Even if Jiang Mengyu had known in advance that she’d be followed, how could she have predicted exactly when the van would collide with them?
Jiang Mengyu pressed her lips together, silent.
Gu Lanqiu’s dark gaze fixed on the girl in the hospital bed. Judging by Jiang Mengyu’s frail appearance now, it was hard to imagine she had the audacity to deliberately ram another vehicle.
After all, the slightest misstep could have been fatal.
Yet Jiang Mengyu had emerged completely unscathed.
This level of ruthlessness, along with her precise control over distance and speed, made Gu Lanqiu realize she might have misjudged her. The real Jiang Mengyu was far more adept at deception than she’d thought.
Jiang Mengyu offered no explanation because none was needed. Gu Lanqiu would soon learn the reason.
She silently counted down in her heart.
3… 2… 1…
Just as Gu Lanqiu, seeing her silence, was about to press further, a faint voice abruptly sounded in her ears.
[Lanqiu definitely won’t believe me, because I already knew she’d be in trouble today.]
[Thank goodness… this time, I made it in time.]
Gu Lanqiu’s brows snapped together. “What did you say?”
Jiang Mengyu: “Huh?”
A look of confusion crossed her face. Weak from her injuries, her voice was barely audible. “I didn’t say anything.”
Gu Lanqiu’s eyes were deep, her face revealing neither joy nor anger, yet her gaze was sharp as a blade, sweeping back and forth across Jiang Mengyu’s face.
Jiang Mengyu’s lips were clearly sealed shut, yet moments later, Gu Lanqiu heard her voice again, whispering in her ear.
[Is Lanqiu hallucinating? Is this a side effect of the car accident?]
What on earth was going on?
The confusion in Jiang Mengyu’s eyes was so genuine that Gu Lanqiu could even detect a deeply hidden trace of concern in them.
Was she worried about her?
Gu Lanqiu didn’t think her relationship with Jiang Mengyu was anywhere near that close.
Jiang Mengyu’s reaction was off.
And what did she mean by saying she already knew something would happen last night?
Jiang Mengyu showed no signs of faltering. She met Gu Lanqiu’s gaze openly, her expression calm, yet waves of concern kept bubbling up in her mind.
[Lanqiu still has red veins in her eyes, did she not sleep last night?]
[She wasn’t hurt, was she?]
Gu Lanqiu frowned, her eyes fixed unwaveringly on Jiang Mengyu, her gaze almost unnervingly perceptive.
No wonder she was the woman in the original story who could turn the tide.
Jiang Mengyu wondered, how would a normal person react upon suddenly discovering they could hear someone else’s thoughts?
Gu Lanqiu had only asked that one question at the beginning. After that, no matter what Jiang Mengyu thought in her mind, she didn’t show the slightest hint of reaction, as if she hadn’t heard anything at all.
The tense silence between them lasted until Secretary Zhao entered the room with the doctor.
“President Gu, as you instructed, I’ve brought lunch for Miss Jiang. I’ve also checked with the doctor, she’s allowed to eat.”
Hearing this, Gu Lanqiu glanced at Secretary Zhao. Why was he being so talkative all of a sudden?
Secretary Zhao’s expression remained unchanged as he placed the food container on the coffee table, not uttering another word.
Yet Gu Lanqiu heard his voice continue to echo in her mind.
[What does President Gu mean by looking at me like that?]
Gu Lanqiu rubbed her temples. Was she really hallucinating?
The doctor examined Jiang Mengyu once more, confirmed there were no serious issues, and gave her some instructions, urging her to rest properly before finally leaving the ward.
Secretary Zhao had also brought two caregivers with him.
Gu Lanqiu sat on the nearby sofa, watching as the caregivers arranged the meal containers on the small table in front of Jiang Mengyu all light, bland dishes.
Jiang Mengyu ate slowly, managing only a few bites after a long while.
Her head was still spinning, and she had little appetite.
[My stomach feels awful, but Lanqiu had this bought for me. I don’t want to waste it.]
The woman sitting nearby remained silent, yet her presence was undeniably strong. Jiang Mengyu could clearly sense the nervousness of the caregivers beside her.
She forced herself to take a few more bites before finally hearing Gu Lanqiu say coolly, “If you can’t eat, don’t force yourself.”
Jiang Mengyu set down her spoon. She knew Gu Lanqiu had been observing her the whole time that gaze was too obvious to ignore.
Turning to Gu Lanqiu, Jiang Mengyu looked weary, but a faint, reluctant warmth still flickered in her eyes. “Lan… President Gu.”
“If you have other matters to attend to, please don’t let me keep you.”
Was this how she acted in front of Zeyan too, playing the victim, retreating to advance?
