- Chapter 27.1 - The Cannon Fodder Alpha Secretly in Love with the Female Lead Omega (24)
Jiang Mengyu Never Loved Her in the First Place.
Chi Jingyan and Chu Muyao had just taken their seats when Secretary Zhao, who had pre-ordered the dishes, saw Chu Muyao add two desserts to the order. The food soon arrived one after another.
They had only taken a couple of bites when Chi Jingyan’s phone, placed on the table, suddenly buzzed twice, lighting up the screen.
Chi Jingyan glanced at it casually, but her expression froze instantly before gradually darkening.
Noticing her tension, Chu Muyao set down her chopsticks and said understandingly, “If you have something to attend to, maybe we should,”
After all, she wasn’t in the mood to eat much either.
Chi Jingyan snapped out of her thoughts and shook her head. Picking up her phone, she stood up. “I need to take this call. Would you mind waiting for me for a few minutes?”
“Go ahead.”
Only when Chi Jingyan’s figure had completely disappeared from view did Chu Muyao silently let out a sigh of relief.
She also took out her phone from her bag to check for any new messages. Just as she lowered her head, a woman’s voice suddenly sounded beside her.
“Xiao Yao?”
Chu Muyao instinctively looked up, her eyes widening in surprise.
“Sister Li!”
She exclaimed joyfully, “When did you get back?!”
The woman referred to as Sister Li had an exceptionally mature and striking beauty. Standing before Chu Muyao, her gaze remained fixed on her.
“My flight landed at eight last night.”
Chu Muyao’s eyes curved into crescents. “That’s wonderful!”
“It’s been so long since we last saw each other!”
“Mm.” The woman’s lips curled slightly. “This time, I don’t plan on leaving again anytime soon.”
Her eyes bore deeply into Chu Muyao’s.
Chu Muyao mirrored her smile, her eyes sparkling, and a faint blush unconsciously tinted her cheeks.
By the time Chi Jingyan returned, the seat beside Chu Muyao was empty.
Chi Jingyan could clearly sense that Chu Muyao’s mood had improved significantly compared to before she left, but she didn’t pry. Instead, she simply sat back down across from her.
The two resumed their meal in silence.
Chu Muyao seemed distracted, her head lowered, oblivious to the small earpiece that had somehow appeared on Chi Jingyan’s beautiful ear, hidden beneath her dark hair.
…
Jiang Mengyu ignored Chi Jia.
The soothing, gentle voice of the lounge singer flowed into her ears, singing an English song.
“If you wanna go, then I’ll be so lonely.”
Jiang Mengyu’s fingers tapped rhythmically against her leg in time with the music. Her complete disregard for Chi Jia only strengthened the latter’s determination to win her over.
“Why are you here alone?”
Chi Jia spoke as she casually took a seat beside Jiang Mengyu.
Even if Jiang Mengyu didn’t respond, she didn’t feel the slightest bit awkward. “Why didn’t my dear sister bring you along?”
Without waiting for Jiang Mengyu to answer, Chi Jia continued on her own, “Oh, I remember now. My sister is on a date with an Omega at a restaurant nearby. How could she possibly bring a third wheel?”
At this point, Jiang Mengyu finally glanced sideways at her. Her eyes were deep and dark, like a calm sea under the night sky, with dangerous tides hidden beneath the serene surface.
Chi Jia instinctively recalled the last time in the private room when Jiang Mengyu had looked at her just as expressionlessly before injecting the drug into her body without hesitation.
This was a bold and ruthless woman.
Chi Jia gritted her teeth. Though she felt wary, she wasn’t frightened. Instead, her body trembled with the thrill of such a provocative challenge.
Her heartbeat quickened as she stared straight at the person before her. The blue ambient lights of the bar cast a soft glow on Jiang Mengyu’s profile, softening the Alpha’s otherwise aggressive beauty. Her face was half-hidden in the dim light, and the coldness in her eyes seemed less pronounced, replaced by an alluring mystique that made one want to draw closer.
Unconsciously, Chi Jia lowered her voice.
“I remember you used to despise Chi Jingyan. Why are you willing to follow her now?”
Jiang Mengyu slightly lowered her eyelids. Just as Chi Jia thought she still wouldn’t respond, Jiang Mengyu suddenly spoke softly, “That doesn’t seem to have anything to do with you.”
Chi Jia laughed. “I know you like Chi Jingyan, don’t you?”
The feelings Jiang Mengyu had painstakingly suppressed, the ones she couldn’t reveal to outsiders, were casually blurted out by Chi Jia.
Her tone was flippant and careless. “Didn’t you used to prefer obedient and docile Omegas like Chu Muyao?”
“Chi Jingyan has a terrible temper, she’s an Alpha, and she doesn’t even treat you like a human being.”
As she spoke, Chi Jia’s gaze fell on Jiang Mengyu’s neck.
The small bar was stuffy with the air conditioning on, so Jiang Mengyu had taken off her jacket and undone the top two buttons of her shirt, revealing the necklace around her neck. The three letters engraved on it were glaringly exposed to Chi Jia’s eyes.
Chi Jia clicked her tongue. “Are you really content being Chi Jingyan’s dog?”
Jiang Mengyu replied succinctly, “None of your business.”
Chi Jia tilted her head, studying her. “How can you say it’s none of my business?”
“Chi Jingyan is my sister. It’s my duty to eliminate threats for her.”
“Keeping someone with ulterior motives by her side isn’t the Chi family’s way of doing things.”
“If anything scandalous happens, it’ll be the entire Chi family’s reputation at stake.”
Chi Jia spoke with righteous indignation, though her words would have carried more weight if she hadn’t previously drugged Chi Jingyan in public without a shred of sisterly regard.
Jiang Mengyu’s voice was low. “I won’t hurt her.”
“That’s hard to say.” Chi Jia abruptly changed the subject. “But I’m genuinely curious, what exactly do you like about Chi Jingyan?”
When Jiang Mengyu remained silent, Chi Jia added leisurely, “Or do you just enjoy being someone’s dog?”
Jiang Mengyu showed no reaction, but System No. 031 in her mind was furious.
It was one thing for Chi Jingyan to call the host a dog, she was the protagonist, after all. But Chi Jia, a mere villainous side character and the female lead A’s defeated opponent, what right did she have to mock the host?
[Host! Put her in her place hard!]
Jiang Mengyu did not refute Chi Jia as No. 031 had expected. Instead, she relaxed into the booth’s sofa, her long lashes half-lowered, her gaze distant and unfocused.
Chi Jia raised an eyebrow. “So it’s true?”
As she spoke, she leaned closer to Jiang Mengyu. “Chi Jingyan is the most clueless when it comes to romance. She brings you along on a date, happily dining with someone else next door while leaving you here to drown your sorrows alone.”
“Rather than suffering like this by her side, why not come with me?”
Chi Jia extended her hand toward Jiang Mengyu. “I’m much gentler than Chi Jingyan.”
Before her fingertips could brush Jiang Mengyu’s shoulder, her wrist was abruptly caught in Jiang Mengyu’s grip.
Jiang Mengyu regarded her with cold eyes. “Ah Yan is wonderful.”
“As long as I’m willing, no matter how she treats me, I’ll cherish it.”
“There’s no need for you to comment.”
She flung Chi Jia’s hand away.
In the restaurant next door.
The knife in Chi Jingyan’s hand suddenly scraped against the plate with a jarring screech, drawing Chu Muyao’s attention. She looked up at Chi Jingyan. “What’s wrong?”
Chi Jingyan didn’t seem the type to act so carelessly.
Chi Jingyan pressed her lips together. “It’s nothing.”
“I was just lost in thought.”
“Oh.” Chu Muyao lowered her head again.
Her reaction was unusually calm, showing no anger at Chi Jingyan’s distraction in her presence.
Chi Jingyan exhaled softly.
The two sat across from each other at the table, yet their minds were elsewhere, their attention far from one another.
The conversation between Jiang Mengyu and Chi Jia continued.
Chi Jia wasn’t the least bit surprised by her rejection.
If Jiang Mengyu had switched sides so easily, Chi Jia would have found it utterly boring. Deep down, she harbored some of the worst Alpha tendencies she relished taking what belonged to others.
“You’re devoted to her, but my dear sister doesn’t seem to feel the same.”
Chi Jia was referring to Chi Jingyan’s date with Chu Muyao.
“The eldest daughter of the Chi family can’t afford to fool around with an Alpha. Besides, Chi Jingyan needs to marry a highly compatible Omega to produce high-tier offspring, that’s our grandfather’s demand.”
If Chi Jingyan ever hoped to inherit the Chi family, this was non-negotiable.
Chi Jia didn’t believe Chi Jingyan would abandon years of discipline for the sake of an Alpha. If Chi Jingyan were truly that lovestruck, Chi Jia would probably laugh herself awake in her dreams.
“But I’m different.” Chi Jia’s tone carried a hint of self-mockery.
Though Old Master Chi treated her and Chi Jingyan equally on the surface, Chi Jia saw the truth, his favoritism leaned unmistakably toward Chi Jingyan.
“Whatever Chi Jingyan can’t give you, I can.”
As she spoke, Chi Jia pulled a bank card from her bag and offered it to Jiang Mengyu.
“There’s five million in here. Consider it a token of my sincerity.”
She had investigated Jiang Mengyu’s background raised in an orphanage, renting her own place since fourteen, once so poor she could barely afford meals.
Five million meant nothing to Chi Jia, but for Jiang Mengyu, it should have been a fortune.
Yet Jiang Mengyu didn’t take it. She stared at Chi Jia calmly, her eyes even tinged with mockery. “You think I stay with Ah Yan for money?”
Then what else could it be?
Chi Jia couldn’t understand what could have caused Jiang Mengyu’s attitude toward Chi Jingyan to undergo such a dramatic transformation, aside from money. Jiang Mengyu had clearly despised Chi Jingyan before.
“You wouldn’t understand,” Jiang Mengyu shook her head.
Chi Jia wanted to say more, but as she leaned forward, something hard unexpectedly pressed against her waist.
Her body stiffened instantly. She looked down though the tavern was dimly lit, she could still clearly see what Jiang Mengyu was holding in her hand.
It was a silver pistol.
Chi Jia took a deep breath. “Chi Jingyan even gave you this?”
The pistol wasn’t particularly special, it was just the one Chi Jingyan always carried, rarely ever setting it aside.
Jiang Mengyu didn’t answer. Instead, she gazed coldly at Chi Jia and said, “Don’t come near me.”
Was Jiang Mengyu guarding her chastity for Chi Jingyan?
So restrained that she wouldn’t even allow others to touch her?
For some reason, Chi Jia suddenly recalled the displeased look on Chi Jingyan’s face two nights ago in the old mansion’s corridor when she had reached out to touch Jiang Mengyu.
In that moment, she understood something. Even with a gun pointed at her, Chi Jia didn’t get angry. Instead, she smiled meaningfully.
“Chi Jingyan actually really…”
She didn’t finish her sentence, only chuckled again. “You have to give me a reason.”
“Otherwise, I won’t give up.”
Chi Jia was certain that during Jiang Mengyu’s time with Chi Jingyan, she must have deliberately studied Chi Jia’s personality. After all, as the person Chi Jingyan hated the most, she deserved that much attention.
Chi Jia was also someone who would stop at nothing to achieve her goals.
Jiang Mengyu frowned. “A-Yan once saved me, so I won’t betray her.”
As she spoke, a warning flashed in her eyes, her voice deeper than before. “Stop scheming against A-Yan. Otherwise, even if it costs me my life, I’ll drag you down to hell with me.”
“So you want to die with me,” Chi Jia blinked. “Rounding it off, does that mean you want to be with me?”
Jiang Mengyu: “…”
Even System No. 031 was stunned.
[Host, this is the first time I’ve seen someone even more shameless than you.]
Jiang Mengyu twitched her lips. “I concede defeat.”
She holstered the gun, no longer looking at Chi Jia, but her voice drifted lightly into Chi Jia’s ears. “I’ll always be watching you.”
Chi Jia grinned. “Then you’d better keep a close eye on me. Who knows, if you blink, I might just kick Chi Jingyan into hell first.”
She made no effort to hide her hatred for Chi Jingyan, even to the point of wishing for her death.
Having achieved her goal, Jiang Mengyu had no interest in continuing this exchange. “Get lost.”
