The Cannon Fodder Became the Empire's Beloved Omega - Chapter 52
Gu Yu’s eyes darkened slightly.
Watching the Omega beside him hastily put distance between them, as if trying to avoid him, his mood instantly soured.
Did he dislike him? Or an inexplicable tightness gripped his chest, making it hard to breathe. He lifted his gaze, looking at the person who deliberately averted his eyes, and responded with a faint “Mm.” He only said, “Let’s head back first.”
Upon hearing this, Yu Ruan hesitated. He had already decided to keep his distance from Gu Yu and wanted to get used to it sooner rather than later. But Gu Yu’s timing was just too deliberate refusing outright would feel too harsh.
After a long moment of thought, Yu Ruan nodded silently. “Okay.”
Keeping some distance didn’t mean abandoning their friendship. Gu Yu had been so good to him; he couldn’t be ungrateful.
As Ye Yizhou and the others’ car disappeared from view, Yu Ruan walked alongside Gu Yu, neither of them initiating conversation. The awkward tension in the air grew palpable. After a long internal struggle, Yu Ruan finally mustered the courage to speak up. “By the way, I didn’t get a chance to ask earlier. Were you hurt at the end there?”
Gu Yu paused mid-step, his dark blue eyes shifting as if lost in thought. After a few seconds, he replied with an “Mm,” saying, “The setting and monsters were all fake. It’s not that easy to get hurt.”
At this, Yu Ruan finally remembered what he had forgotten. He let out a sudden “Ah!” and instantly abandoned his resolve to keep his distance. Without thinking, he grabbed Gu Yu’s wrist and hurriedly dragged him toward Cheng Mu. “Cheng Mu, call an ambulance, quick!”
Cheng Mu turned around, utterly baffled as he watched Yu Ruan pull Gu Yu toward him. “What’s wrong? Are you two injured?”
“Not me, it’s Gu Yu,” Yu Ruan explained. “He fell from the first floor of the castle to save me! Is there a doctor available? Can you ask them to come check on Gu Yu? I’m really worried!”
“…” Cheng Mu instinctively glanced at Gu Yu. Taking in the Alpha’s calm demeanor, he couldn’t bring himself to tell Yu Ruan that the person standing beside him was, in terms of combat ability, on par with Lin Fenghan.
Why was it that among Alphas, he had neither a sweetheart to care for him nor the strength to measure up to others?
Comparing Alphas was truly infuriating!
Feeling a pang of bitterness, Cheng Mu nodded to Yu Ruan. “Don’t worry, don’t worry. The doctor is already on the way. Just wait a bit and” His gaze shifted to Gu Yu, and he swallowed nervously. “Try to comfort him a little more.”
As perceptive as Cheng Mu was, he had already sensed the peculiar atmosphere between the two. Now, standing closer, he caught a faint whiff of honeyed sweetness tinged with a hint of lime carried by the breeze. His eyes widened in surprise.
Was this?
Noticing Cheng Mu’s thoughtful gaze, Gu Yu coldly lifted his eyes and moved to shield the person behind him.
Gu Yu’s action confirmed Cheng Mu’s suspicions. He raised an eyebrow meaningfully and smiled. “Don’t worry,” he said to Gu Yu. “My greatest virtue is knowing when to keep my mouth shut.”
Yu Ruan watched the two of them exchanging cryptic remarks, utterly bewildered. Soon, a middle-aged man in a white coat hurried over, and Yu Ruan immediately forgot everything else, urgently pulling Gu Yu along as he said, “Doctor, hello, could you please examine him first?”
The doctor shakily put on his glasses, and upon seeing Gu Yu’s face, he froze.
His gaze shifted between the two of them before he couldn’t help but ask, “Your Highness Gu Yu may I ask, where are you injured?”
Gu Yu lifted his eyes and slowly rolled up his sleeve, revealing a bandage faintly stained with blood. “My arm.”
The doctor: “…” Just as expected.
“From a superficial look, your injury doesn’t seem serious,” the doctor said cautiously after a moment of deliberation. “How about this could you spare some time for a thorough full-body examination? Otherwise, it’s difficult for us to assess the extent of your injuries.”
Gu Yu pulled his sleeve back down, his expression indifferent. “No need.”
Yu Ruan didn’t believe it for a second. “How could you only injure your arm after falling from such a height? Don’t push yourself, we’re out of the arena now. Besides your arm, are you sure there’s nowhere else you feel unwell?”
“Mm.”
“…” Yu Ruan was at a loss for words.
A sense of helpless frustration spread in his heart. After a moment of dejection, Yu Ruan suddenly recalled that Gu Yu only seemed to respond more when the matter involved him. When it came to himself, Gu Yu was usually rather indifferent.
Thinking of this, he tentatively said, “Actually, I feel a bit unwell too.”
Gu Yu paused in the act of rolling up his sleeve.
Noticing his reaction, Yu Ruan immediately began improvising according to his plan, convincing himself it was a white lie. “My head feels a bit dizzy, and I’m a little nauseous. Maybe it’s from the intense exercise earlier. How about we both go for a full-body check-up?”
Gu Yu lifted his gaze slightly, glancing at the sincere Omega, and felt a subtle mix of emotions half amused by the clumsy lie, and half warmed by the other’s genuine concern.
Though the feeling lasted only a moment, it still struck a nerve. Like the sweet pheromones that flood the senses when biting into something, it swept through his rationality like a sudden gust of wind, leaving only instinct behind. “Mm.”
It actually worked!
Yu Ruan immediately brightened up, smiling at Gu Yu. Happily, he took the Alpha’s hand and asked, “Then let’s go to the hospital. Thank you for your trouble.”
The doctor quickly agreed.
Yu Ruan bid farewell to Cheng Mu and pulled Gu Yu along to follow the doctor to the hospital. On the way, the doctor had already scheduled appointments for both of them, and the examination results came out quickly.
Looking at the report in his hand, the doctor felt too embarrassed to tell Yu Ruan that Gu Yu was perfectly fine. He could only vaguely change the subject, prescribing some anti-inflammatory medication while desperately apologizing with his eyes to the silent Alpha beside him. “There might be a slight concussion. I’m sorry to trouble both of you, but please stay in the hospital for observation for a day.”
“Alright, thank you for your hard work.”
Hearing this, Yu Ruan finally breathed a sigh of relief: I knew it couldn’t be that he was completely fine. Good thing I dragged Gu Yu to the hospital. Thinking back, I’m really glad I did!
He blinked and sincerely thanked the doctor who had been forced to work overtime late at night. Then, he walked back to Gu Yu’s side and carefully tugged at his sleeve. “Should we go get admitted to the hospital?”
Gu Yu glanced at the examination slip in his hand: he had a mild concussion and needed to be hospitalized for observation for a day. Yu Ruan’s slip was even more absurd it simply stated “low blood sugar” and prescribed three doses of glucose, after which he could leave.
“…”
What a quack.
Noticing the furrow in Gu Yu’s brow, Yu Ruan thought he might be uncomfortable with the phrase “hospitalization for observation.” After a moment’s thought, he offered, “It’s fine. We don’t have classes tomorrow anyway. I can stay with you at the hospital, and we can go back together later?”
Gu Yu’s grip on the slip tightened slightly, and a strange feeling stirred in his heart. He looked up at the cautious Omega beside him, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly as he swallowed the words of refusal.
“Alright.”
Worried about the alarming words “concussion” on Gu Yu’s examination slip, Yu Ruan made sure not to let him handle any of the hospitalization procedures. Fortunately, the doctor who had brought them had already informed the hospital staff before leaving. All they needed to do was sign a form and register, and the admission process was quickly completed.
Yu Ruan treated Gu Yu as if he were a fragile porcelain doll, carefully guiding him into the hospital room. The room had already been tidied up by a domestic robot neat and clean, ready for them to settle in.
Since Gu Yu’s injury was to his head, the doctor hadn’t prescribed any medication. The two of them sat in the room for a while before a nurse carrying a medicine tray entered. On it were anti-inflammatory solution and glucose, which she said were for their treatment.
Yu Ruan gave her a friendly smile and pulled the curtain aside. “Is there anything I can help with?”
“No, no, please just sit down,” she quickly waved him off. “Let me start with your IV. Are you feeling okay right now?”
Yu Ruan paused for a moment, then nodded. “I’m fine.” As he spoke, he realized the needle was about to be inserted and unconsciously pursed his lips, rolling up his sleeve. “Thank you.”
The nurse smoothly took his outstretched hand and wiped it with an alcohol swab. “Don’t worry, I’m very skilled, it won’t hurt! Just close your eyes and pretend an ant is biting you. It’ll be over quickly!”
“…” Yu Ruan’s face instantly flushed with embarrassment.
He hadn’t expected her to be so “considerate,” immediately seeing through his fear of needles and even calling it out. He felt utterly mortified, wishing he could find a crack in the floor to disappear into.
It was embarrassing to admit, but even though he’d been injured many times before, no matter how many shots he’d received, he still instinctively feared the sensation of a needle piercing his skin.
Just then, a slightly cool hand suddenly covered his eyes.
Yu Ruan instinctively closed his eyes, his eyelashes brushing against the other’s palm in a slow, ticklish motion. The other person’s fingers trembled slightly, as if startled by the touch. “Don’t blink.”
Yu Ruan was confused. “Gu!”
Before he could finish speaking, the slight sting of the needle piercing his skin came from the back of his hand. Only then did he belatedly realize: Gu Yu, noticing his fear, had deliberately blocked his view of the needle. That explained what had just happened.
His heart felt as if something had struck it hard, and the gland at the nape of his neck warmed slightly. Flustered and moved, he blinked several times in succession. “Thank you.”
The hand on his shoulder tightened slightly, as though restraining something. Yu Ruan immediately recalled the earlier warning, “Don’t blink” and, feeling awkward, blinked several more times involuntarily.
The hand covering his eyes instantly pressed down with more force.
Yu Ruan: “…”
Help! QAQ
He really didn’t mean to do it on purpose!
The ticklish sensation came in waves, and the Omega under his palm resembled a startled rabbit, timidly testing the boundaries. Gu Yu pursed his lips, his expression cold as he glanced sideways. “Are you done?”
“Mm-hmm, almost there!” The nurse quickly removed the adhesive tape and tied a neat little bow on the Omega’s wrist. “Alright, you can open your eyes now!”
Gu Yu immediately withdrew his hand.
Yu Ruan looked up blankly. His eyes, suddenly exposed to the harsh fluorescent light, experienced a brief moment of blindness. He closed them uncomfortably, then saw the pretty little bow now adorning the back of his hand. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” The nurse smiled at him before turning her gaze behind him. “Your Highness Gu Yu, it’s your turn now. Please extend your arm, I’ll help clean the wound.”
