The Canary and Little Cannon Fodder [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 8
The two finished their breakfast and rested for a while before departing at exactly half past eight for the “Starlight for You” audition location.
The audition was held in an office building owned by the production company, Huayue Media. Aside from the characters requiring open auditions, nearly eighty percent of the minor roles had already been reserved for the artists of Huayue Media. The roles currently up for audition included the male lead, the second male lead, the second female lead, and the third female lead.
Bo Shuyi and Lin Nanyun took the elevator to the designated floor. Before the doors even opened, they could hear the chaotic and noisy sounds of the crowd outside.
“Ding!”
As the elevator doors slowly slid open, the actors who were nervously preparing for their auditions instinctively looked over, wanting to see if another rival had arrived.
A delicate, snow-white foot stepped out of the elevator. The toes were rounded, and the nails were painted a brilliant crimson, looking like red plum blossoms against the snow. Against the thin black straps of her sandals, the skin on her instep appeared radiantly white.
Then came the slender ankles, followed by the gracefully curved calves.
The crowd’s gaze slowly moved upward until it landed on a face beautiful enough to make everyone present pale in comparison. For a moment, their breath hitched.
The instant Bo Shuyi stepped out of the elevator, time seemed to hit the pause button. Everyone stared at her, unmoving, their mouths open but unable to make a sound.
“Huh? Why did it suddenly get so quiet?” Lin Nanyun asked as she followed behind Bo Shuyi.
“I do not know either,” Bo Shuyi said as she pursed her lips. She pretended to be frightened, hugged the arm of Lin Nanyun, and hid behind her.
The performance of stage fright by Bo Shuyi snapped everyone back to reality. The male artists cast lingering, reluctant glances at her before turning back to their preparations; Bo Shuyi was not a threat to them.
The female artists, however, were different. The stares they directed at Bo Shuyi were filled with jealousy and wariness, especially those auditioning for the second female lead. They felt particularly disgruntled. The character of the second female lead was designed to be sexy and charming, with a beauty second only to the heroine. In their minds, there was a ninety-nine percent chance that Bo Shuyi was there to audition for that role.
“Bo Shuyi? Why is she here?”
“She is definitely here for the second female lead.”
“She just has a face that is barely passable. In terms of acting, she definitely will not pass the audition.”
“Exactly. Bo Shuyi has no acting skills. Director Luo will surely not take a liking to her.”
The female artists lowered their heads and whispered to one another while keeping their eyes fixed on Bo Shuyi.
Lin Nanyun patted the hand of Bo Shuyi to comfort her. “It is fine. Just follow me.” In truth, Lin Nanyun was also a bit intimidated. She wondered why so many people were looking at her.
Lin Nanyun held her head high, leading the frail and beautiful princess toward the audition room like a proud queen. The crowd instinctively parted to make a path for them.
Assistant Xiao Jia, who was standing in front of the audition room confirming the list, saw Bo Shuyi and immediately came forward with a smile. “Teacher Bo, you are here. Director Luo and the others are already waiting inside. I will take you in.”
Luo Yunqi had informed Xiao Jia beforehand that Bo Shuyi would be acting as one of the judges for this audition.
Bo Shuyi nodded politely and walked inside with Lin Nanyun. Xiao Jia did not recognize Lin Nanyun and reached out to stop her, saying to Bo Shuyi, “Teacher Bo, we have regulations. Unrelated personnel cannot enter the audition room. Perhaps your friend could wait outside?”
Lin Nanyun spoke up, “Hello, my name is Lin Nanyun. I am here representing Hangshan Media. Director Luo should have mentioned my name.”
The eyes of Xiao Jia widened in surprise. “Manager… Manager Lin? So it is you. I am sorry I did not recognize you. Director Luo did mention it, but I did not expect you to be so young.”
Once Xiao Jia realized Lin Nanyun was the investor, she unconsciously began using honorifics.
“It is quite alright. I should have identified myself sooner,” Lin Nanyun said.
Xiao Jia breathed a sigh of relief, laughed awkwardly, and opened the door to invite them in.
As the figures of Lin Nanyun and Bo Shuyi disappeared behind the door, the actors waiting outside were filled with astonishment. They immediately checked their phones and realized there were still five minutes before the auditions were scheduled to begin.
They wondered by what right Bo Shuyi was allowed to go in five minutes early.
“Bo Shuyi certainly has talent. Wei Chunze has only been dead for a few months and she has already found a new benefactor. It seems this benefactor is quite powerful; she might have even been pre-selected for the role,” He Yaoxin said sourly to her manager, Han Fang.
Han Fang frowned. “It is not impossible. You had better hope that the role Bo Shuyi secured is not the second female lead.”
He Yaoxin slammed her script onto the floor. “If it is not the second female lead, could it be the third or fourth? The third is ugly and the fourth is fat. Which one do you think suits her?”
People nearby looked over at the commotion. Han Fang hurried to pick up the script and shoved it back into the hands of He Yaoxin. “Nothing is certain yet. This is all speculation. Why are you getting so worked up?”
“What if it is true? Do not forget, if I do not get the second female lead, you will lose a large commission!” He Yaoxin said crossly.
Han Fang knew the temper of He Yaoxin and did not argue with her. She whispered, “What are you afraid of? Even if you do not get the second female lead, the third female lead will definitely be yours. Manager Qian has already handled everything for you. Do not worry.”
The Manager Qian whom Han Fang mentioned was the benefactor of He Yaoxin and one of the investors for “Starlight for You.”
After hearing the words of Han Fang, the expression of He Yaoxin did not improve; instead, it grew worse.
“Qian Zhengyi is truly useless. He calls himself an investor, yet after all my efforts to please him, he can only give me the third female lead. Why does Bo Shuyi get to play the beauty while I have to play the ugly one? With her acting skills, she still dares to come out and perform. How am I any worse than her!”
Han Fang gave her a warning look. “Director Luo has always been strict. With your acting skills, you are only slightly better than Bo Shuyi. If Manager Qian had not arranged it for you, do you think you could have secured the third female lead on your own? You would be outmatched even for the fourth female lead!”
He Yaoxin fell silent, but her face remained indignant.
The auditions officially began at nine o’clock. Because there were so many participants, Luo Yunqi personally handled the auditions for the male lead and the second female lead. The second male lead and the third female lead roles were left to the assistant director. Once the assistant director chose someone, Luo Yunqi would take a look; if there were no major issues, the choice would be finalized.
The assistant director for the third female lead had already been bribed by the benefactor of He Yaoxin, Qian Zhengyi. The audition of He Yaoxin for the role was merely a formality.
He Yaoxin was third in line for the second female lead audition. However, after entering the room, she saw no sign of Bo Shuyi. The woman who had arrived with her was also nowhere to be seen. Only Luo Yunqi and the screenwriter were in the room.
He Yaoxin could not help but feel flustered. She had been staring at the door the entire time and had not seen Bo Shuyi come out.
The acting of He Yaoxin was not very good to begin with, and with her mind in such a state, her performance was even worse. Luo Yunqi took one look, called for a stop, and told her to leave.
Before a pale-faced He Yaoxin left, she caught a glimpse of what seemed to be another door behind Luo Yunqi.
Han Fang did not even need to guess the result of the audition of He Yaoxin. Even if Bo Shuyi had not been pre-selected for the second female lead, there were plenty of actresses with better skills and better looks than He Yaoxin fighting for the role. It would never be her turn.
Han Fang stood at the door waiting for He Yaoxin. The actors before her had all taken three to five minutes, but He Yaoxin came out in less than two.
Ignoring the stares of the others, Han Fang pulled He Yaoxin aside. Seeing her look of suspicion and uncertainty, she asked worriedly, “Yaoxin, what is the matter?”
He Yaoxin grabbed the hand of Han Fang. “It is too strange. Bo Shuyi and that woman she came with were not inside. I was watching the whole time; she never came out after going in. Where do you think she is hiding?”
