The Beta Wife Claimed by Competing Alphas - Chapter 29
That very afternoon, Mu Yan received a phone call from He Fan.
After Shang Qiyue dropped him off at home, he went back to work at the company. When the phone first rang, Mu Yan instinctively suspected it was Lu Chong. Lu Chong had contacted him many times over the past few days; Mu Yan didn’t understand why, after their relationship had ended, Lu Chong acted as if he couldn’t live without him.
Fortunately, it wasn’t him this time. Mu Yan answered the call after the first ring.
“Xiao Yan,” He Fan’s familiar voice rang out. “How is your mother doing? I went to Country A yesterday and was dealing with jet lag after landing, so I didn’t see your message. 150,000, right? I’ll transfer it to you now.”
Mu Yan’s head buzzed. For a moment, he couldn’t say a word.
Fate seemed to have played a joke on him. Just as he had sold himself, an old friend offered a belated helping hand.
“Brother, are you okay? I’m sorry,” He Fan said hesitantly. “Actually… I saw the message when I landed, but I didn’t have 150,000 on hand at the time. I was embarrassed to tell you, so I’m only getting it all together now.”
Mu Yan opened his mouth, but something felt stuck in his throat, leaving him speechless.
“Xiao Fan,” he said with difficulty after a long while, “thank you. Truly, thank you for the trouble. I’ve already…”
“Have you already raised the money?” He Fan asked understandingly. “I’m sorry, brother. It was my vanity; I didn’t reply to your message in time. It’s good that you found the money. I’ll return this to my friends then.”
“Thank you,” Mu Yan said, his voice choking up. “It’s okay. Thank you no matter what.”
“As long as your mother is okay.” He Fan smiled. “I’ll let you go; my friends are calling me to go skiing. Goodbye, Xiao Yan.”
Mu Yan said his goodbyes and stared blankly at the chat box. It was his own decision to go to Shang Qiyue. Rather than blaming something unexplainable like fate, it was better to call it his own choice.
President Shang was a good person; he helped him, never forced him to do anything he didn’t want to do, and was even willing to take his mother to dialysis. There was no need to try and play the victim now after accepting the help.
On Sunday, the day of his mother’s scheduled check-up, Mu Yan’s leg injury had basically healed. His brother, Lin Yi, also came along, saying that after the check-up, the whole family would go out for a local chicken clay pot dinner.
“Oh, why spend that money? You could buy a chicken and stew it at home just the same,” his mother remarked.
“It’s a rare treat,” Mu Yan said, looking up from the report with a smile. “I think that shop’s chicken clay pot really does taste different from home-stewed.”
“Mom, look, this time it was Yan Yan who insisted on eating out,” Lin Yi added.
His mother’s BMI was very low, and the doctor said she needed to pay more attention to nutrition. Her blood pressure and blood sugar were okay, which relieved Mu Yan. The check-up went smoothly and was set to finish before noon. If Shang Qiyue wanted to come over for dinner, Mu Yan could go grocery shopping right after lunch.
Coming out of the EKG room, the hospital corridor was bustling with people. Mu Yan held the reports as he and Lin Yi accompanied their mother to Director Zhang’s office. Perhaps because Shang Qiyue had put in a word, Director Zhang had called him yesterday, saying they could stop by after the check-up to review the results.
“The overall condition is stable, but the kidney function indicators have dropped slightly compared to last time,” Director Zhang said from behind his desk, reviewing the report with a focused and rigorous expression. “The dialysis frequency must be maintained, and more attention needs to be paid to nutrition.”
Lin Yi nodded and was about to ask a question when the clinic door was suddenly slammed open, hitting the wall with a dull thud.
“Where is the doctor? What exactly does your hospital mean by this?! Do you want my grandmother to die here before you’re satisfied?” A man burst in furiously, followed by two other family members who looked equally agitated.
“Professor, I’m sorry, I couldn’t calm the family down,” Mu Yan looked up to see a young Omega doctor rushing in behind them. She was clearly on the verge of tears from fright but was trying her best to remain calm. “Hello, please calm down. I can explain everything to you slowly.”
Director Zhang frowned and set down the report, his voice steady. “Calm down first. If there’s a problem, we can communicate properly.”
He looked at the young girl, signaling her not to be afraid and to stand behind him. As she walked over, Director Zhang whispered a question; the girl nodded, and Director Zhang’s expression softened slightly. He must have already called security, Mu Yan guessed, but it will take a moment for them to arrive.
“Communicate?” The man slammed the table, his eyes bloodshot and his tone arrogant. “My grandmother could still get out of bed and walk when she came in a week ago, and now she’s lying there unable to even eat! Tell me, what happened? Did you treat her wrong?”
“Changes in condition require an analysis of the patient’s specific medical history. We can arrange for further tests—”
“Tests? All you know is tests! All day long you make patients draw blood and do CT scans, spending a ton of money, and for what? It’s useless!” The man grew increasingly violent, pointing his finger at Director Zhang and cursing, “You doctors only know how to scam people out of money. You don’t care about patients’ lives at all!”
Startled by the sudden roar, their mother trembled. Lin Yi frowned and shielded her at his side, whispering, “Mom, don’t be afraid.”
Mu Yan looked up at Director Zhang and saw that his face remained calm, unaffected by the other man’s rage.
“If you have an objection to the treatment plan, you can file a complaint with the medical affairs department. We will arrange for a review and expert consultation,” Director Zhang’s voice remained level. “But if you are here to cause a scene, I will have to let hospital security handle it.”
“Are you threatening me?” The man’s eyes turned cold, and he suddenly reached out to grab Director Zhang’s collar. “Do you know who my father is?”
Lin Yi instinctively reached for his brother’s hand, wanting to tell him not to get involved, but he was a step too late. Director Zhang had indeed helped their family a lot, but even though the man was a Beta, he was tall and sturdy. Lin Yi was selfish; he didn’t want his brother to take the risk.
Mu Yan stepped forward in a few strides, blocking the space between Director Zhang and the man. “Sir, please calm down. I am also a family member of a patient, and I understand how you feel. Director Zhang has been at this hospital for many years and has a very good reputation. There must be a misunderstanding. Please, sit down and let’s talk slowly…”
At a private research institute in City A.
Calling it a research institute was a bit of a stretch; it was more like Shang Qiyue’s private clinic. The primary focus of this institute was researching the rare pheromone disorder he suffered from.
“The situation has improved, which could be a sign of positive progress, though there is also a chance it’s just a normal fluctuation. Have you tried interacting with an Omega?”
Shang Qiyue shook his head. The doctor brought over a perfume-like bottle, sprayed the liquid onto a testing strip, and handed it to him. Shang Qiyue frowned after just one sniff.
“Does it still make you feel uncomfortable? This is an extract from a very high-level Omega’s pheromones.”
For a normal Alpha, the pheromones of a high-level Omega would smell refreshing and pleasant. Unfortunately, Shang Qiyue was no ordinary Alpha. Whether the pheromones smelled like Longjing tea or jasmine, he only found them disgusting.
“This is already the third course of this therapy, sir. Do you wish to continue, or shall we try a different approach?”
“I remember you mentioned a Beta whose pheromones you could smell last time. I discussed this with my mentor; it might be a good breakthrough point.”
“Let’s stick with the original therapy. We’re already on the penultimate course. Maybe quantity will lead to a quality change,” Shang Qiyue leaned back on the sofa, speaking lazily.
Compared to the doctor, who was anxious to find research results and publish papers, the patient didn’t seem to care about his illness at all. The doctor grumbled internally that these rich second-generation kids who studied abroad really had nothing but water in their heads. Who talks about ‘quantity leading to quality change’ here? Just don’t blame us if it doesn’t work.
Regardless, he found it hard to understand Shang Qiyue. Unless he never planned to find an Omega, an Alpha with a pheromone disorder was no different from being impotent. What a waste of such a handsome face.
Shang Qiyue hadn’t expected any substantial progress today anyway. He stood up lazily, contacted his personal assistant on his phone, and began checking emails and replying to messages. There weren’t many emails on a Sunday; he scanned them quickly, and none required immediate attention.
Few people had his private contact information. He opened his messages and found only one from Mu Yan.
“Is the master coming over for dinner today? If you are, I’ll go grocery shopping after my mom’s check-up. [Rose] Besides tomato-stewed beef, is there anything else you’d like to eat? [Rose]”
Getting up early and bustling about all day, yet he still had the energy to go grocery shopping. Mu Yan certainly was high-spirited.
Shang Qiyue called him back, intending to tell him not to bother with the shopping. He would just have someone deliver a few dishes later to save Mu Yan the trouble. He had kept a little canary, not hired a chef. It was just meant to add a bit of spice to life; why take it so seriously?
The phone rang several times before it was finally picked up. Just as Shang Qiyue was about to speak, he heard the sound of soft sobbing from an Omega on the other end.
An Omega? Shang Qiyue’s brain stalled for a second. Recalling Mu Yan’s honest and obedient demeanor, he didn’t think Mu Yan was the type to use his money to keep an Omega.
“I’m looking for Mu Yan,” Shang Qiyue said, his tone unfriendly. “Who are you?”
” I’m sorry, leader. I am Mu Yan’s brother. My brother was just injured. Can he call you back after he wakes up?”
“Injured? How did he get injured? Is it serious?” Shang Qiyue’s brow furrowed. “Where is he right now?”
“Give me the address. I’m coming over now.”
Lin Yi looked at the contact name “President Shang” on Mu Yan’s phone and felt dazed for a moment. He quickly convinced himself that since Yan Yan worked at a large company, it was normal for the leadership to show strong humanitarian concern for their employees.
“We’re at the First Hospital. we accidentally got caught in a medical dispute.”
