- Chapter 7 - Crying Until His Whole Body Turned Red
Let alone crying, an Alpha in their normal state does not show signs of vulnerability, introversion, withdrawal, or insecurity. However, this does not mean that Alphas do not experience these emotions.
Suppressed negative emotions are unearthed, amplified, and poured out during the rut. Influenced by pheromones, an Alpha in heat becomes extremely unstable and dangerous. To alleviate their stress and anxiety, an Alpha who is losing control tends to destroy external objects to release their restless impulses.
Unless injected with a potent high-grade inhibitor or soothed by the pheromones of a high-compatibility Omega, an Alpha enduring a long rut alone is very likely to die from pheromone frenzy.
Xiao Chi, kneeling on the ground, was already rambling incoherently. No matter how little Jiang Lanyi cared about Alpha physiology, he knew the situation was critical.
Who knew if Xiao Chi had remembered to take his inhibitors while he was so absorbed in his work? He wondered if these things were like insulin for diabetics, where missing a single day was not an option. Although he had heard that the Medical Bureau had developed special drugs to delay ruts and heat cycles, Jiang Lanyi could not be certain Xiao Chi was using them.
Alphas were such a hassle. In the future, he really should find a Beta; a simple, steady life was the way to go.
Jiang Lanyi bent over to fish the phone out of Xiao Chi’s trouser pocket. His white T-shirt collar dipped down, and the soft fabric draped over Xiao Chi’s sweat-drenched head like a gentle hand stroking him.
This shirt had just been taken down from the balcony. Since Jiang Lanyi moved in, Butler Zhang took both their clothes from the laundry basket, washed and dried them together, and sorted them back into the wardrobes.
Following Xiao Chi’s instructions, Butler Zhang had purchased a new brand of laundry beads. They were shaped like blue-green leaves, with a slogan that read: “Transports you to an ancient camphor forest in a water town south of the Yangtze River after the rain.”
Betas are not sensitive to pheromones. Therefore, Jiang Lanyi had no idea that he was currently covered in the same scent as Xiao Chi’s pheromones, as if he had been steeped in the Alpha’s embrace for so long that the scent had soaked into his very bones.
As this soft, full body pressed down, seemingly carrying the Alpha’s personal mark, the last string in Xiao Chi’s mind snapped with a “pop,” and his consciousness went blank.
“Ugh, hiss, hey, Xiao Chi!”
The suit pocket was tight against the thigh. Before Jiang Lanyi could reach the phone stuck in the pocket, he was suddenly grabbed by the tall Alpha and tackled to the floor. His back hit the cold ground, causing a sharp pain.
However, the back of his head was well-protected by a large hand. The sensation of the impact against that palm was scorching hot yet incredibly soft. Xiao Chi’s knuckles, on the other hand, were likely badly scraped.
Jiang Lanyi thought he had simply lost his balance and fallen, but then Xiao Chi leaned in and took a bite. A wet tooth mark instantly appeared on his T-shirt, and the fabric tore at the canines to reveal the Beta’s smooth skin.
“You!” Jiang Lanyi’s eyes widened in fury.
His white T-shirt had cost 49.9 with free shipping! Things were different now; in the past, he would have scoffed at clothes under 1,000, but now he had to think twice before buying a shirt for 99.
And this dog-like bastard Xiao Chi had actually bitten a hole in his clothes!
Who cared about an Alpha’s rut? You might be dying, but what I have lost is a high-value short-sleeved shirt that I could have eventually used as pajamas!
Jiang Lanyi felt a surge of rage. He wanted to flip Xiao Chi over with a sudden kick, just like in the novels. But the strength gap between a Beta and an Alpha was naturally vast, and Xiao Chi was now fully exhibiting rut characteristics. With violent impulses surging through his blood, his eyes were bloodshot and low growls vibrated in his throat.
He had truly turned into a beast.
Back in school, some Betas used to joke privately that Alphas were just beasts with a higher level of civilization; otherwise, why would they be so easily influenced by pheromones and turn into rabid animals?
At the time, Jiang Lanyi had just listened. But now, pinned beneath such an Alpha, that well-trained physique felt like a lush tree, with fingers turned into roots, firmly gripping him as if he were soil from which to draw nutrients.
Aside from anger, a sense of fear began to creep into the Beta’s heart as he found himself pinned down.
He could move his arms freely, but he absolutely could not reach Xiao Chi’s phone anymore. Any hitting or pounding was useless; Xiao Chi seemed unable to feel pain. He only cared about one thing: nuzzling and eating.
Jiang Lanyi was both shocked and annoyed, his handsome face turning a shade of red so deep it looked ready to drip blood.
After being nuzzled for five minutes, he furiously grabbed Xiao Chi’s hair and swung his fist at the bastard’s temple. He landed several “thuds” in a row, intending to knock him out.
But Xiao Chi only furrowed his brows deeper, and the bridge of his nose wrinkled into shallow creases. He used his lips, tongue, and teeth together, greedily sucking at his “soil” with audible smacking sounds.
Jiang Lanyi tried to pull him away by his hair, but he indirectly caused himself even more pain. Dammit, how can this place, how can it be stretched like this, hiss.
“Your uncle, get off, you pervert, look closely at who I am, ah, fuck, Xiao Chi!”
His vision blurred with rising tears. Jiang Lanyi’s resistance seemed to turn into nothing more than insignificant background music, while the Alpha’s movements grew more decisive.
A Beta’s saliva and sweat are colorless and odorless, but to Xiao Chi, they tasted like nectar. He was parched; even though he hurt the other man while chewing, and received several soft blows in return, he felt as though he were being encouraged.
Jiang Lanyi was exhausted. His face was a mess of tears and sweat, and his body felt sticky and damp. His thin, soft T-shirt clung to his waist, the hem was curled, and the collar was ruined.
He had struggled for so long that his physical strength was mostly spent. Consequently, when Xiao Chi’s murmuring lips found his neck, Jiang Lanyi did not react immediately, thinking he just wanted to eat somewhere else.
It was only when the canines grazed the scent gland and the sharp objects pressed against it that Jiang Lanyi shivered instinctively. His struggling, which had briefly subsided, became violent once again.
“Xiao Chi, wake up! Look at who I am, don’t, hmph.”
Xiao Chi had likely mistaken him for someone else, some delicate and soft little Omega who could provide pheromonal assistance.
Though Jiang Lanyi had never seen an Omega around Xiao Chi, not even a particularly attractive Beta. Xiao Chi seemed to have no interest in such things, even during the peak of his teenage hormones.
Once, bored at a party, Jiang Lanyi asked him about his ideal type. Xiao Chi had merely stared back with somber eyes, scanned the “fair-weather friends” surrounding him, and eventually curled his lip. “You would not want to know.”
Jiang Lanyi shrugged; he really was not interested.
But isn’t there a saying that the more clean-cut someone appears on the surface, the wilder they are in private? He did not believe for a second that Xiao Chi was some kind of pure gentleman.
With Xiao Chi’s elite genes, background, and looks, there were plenty of Omegas willing to throw themselves at him. He would likely be like most wealthy heirs, moving through a forest of flowers without a single leaf sticking to him. Eventually, he would marry a high-quality Omega of equal status, and they would spend their lives in mutual respect or mutual alienation.
By then, he would likely have forgotten that he once forcibly pinned down a Beta, bit his gland, and poured in every drop of his overloaded pheromones.
Countless fragments of Xiao Chi suddenly exploded into view, flashing during the Alpha’s temporary marking. They crowded into his swollen hippocampus until it felt as though it would burst.
He felt terrible, as if he were catching a fever. His nose was sore, his eyes were sore, and his whole body was aching; even lifting a finger was an ordeal.
How long has it been since Xiao Chi last did this? The volume is so huge.
Jiang Lanyi grit his teeth, feeling as though he were experiencing an avalanche or a tsunami. His meridians felt as if they were being crushed and then reconstructed. Even the strands of his hair were being branded with the Alpha’s mark.
His vision darkened in waves. In the moment before he fainted, Jiang Lanyi suddenly thought: if this were a cultivation novel, when he next opened his eyes, his marrow should be cleansed and he should have formed a Golden Core.
By the time the family doctor hurried over, Xiao Chi had already injected himself with a potent inhibitor. His expression was calm, showing no remaining symptoms of the rut.
“Inhibitors on the market always have side effects, and the new products from the Medical Bureau are still in the testing phase. You should avoid using them frequently,” the family doctor said, performing a full check-up on Xiao Chi first.
Xiao Chi lowered his eyelashes and gave a quiet “mm.” “How is he?”
“Mr. Jiang is fine for the time being. It is just a minor injury to the gland. He will need a five-day course of medication, and we will return then to check on him.”
The family doctor was highly professional. He did not ask why a fainted Beta was in his employer’s home, nor did he investigate the cause of the red swelling on the Beta’s body.
After giving Xiao Chi the necessary instructions, he and his team left with their high-tech equipment. They moved quietly, fearing they might disturb the person resting on the bed.
Xiao Chi sat down by the bed, the mattress dipping under his weight. Jiang Lanyi’s hand slid to his side, brushing against his thigh.
When Xiao Chi had regained his senses, he had been holding this very hand’s fingers in his mouth. Judging by the state of his saliva, he had sucked every inch of the finger roots and gaps. On Jiang Lanyi’s right ring finger, there was a slightly deeper tooth mark that circled it like a ring.
He traced that irregular mark, and his canines began to itch again.
An Alpha’s rut usually lasts about seven days. A single potent inhibitor can maintain a clear state of mind for five days. However, with a partner nearby and hormones being triggered, the effectiveness of the inhibitor would likely drop to only two days.
A potent inhibitor can only be used once a month, which is why the doctor suggested Xiao Chi stay away from Jiang Lanyi during this period. A Beta cannot soothe an Alpha’s rampaging pheromones; too much contact would be detrimental to both of them.
Xiao Chi looked at Jiang Lanyi’s sleeping face, the doctor’s words echoing in his ears.
“Alpha pheromones cannot take root or survive inside a Beta’s body; they dissipate within five minutes. Therefore, a temporary mark has no lasting side effects on a Beta.”
“However, Mr. Jiang’s body had a rejection reaction to you, which we can interpret as an allergy. Based on the blood test results, he appears to have a pheromone-intolerant constitution.”
A pheromone-intolerant Beta. Under his temporary mark, he had developed a low fever. Even now that the fever had broken, he was not sleeping peacefully.
His eyelashes were damp, his lip was bitten, and his body was slightly curled. Beneath the dry, clean clothes were Xiao Chi’s finger marks and hickeys, turning the rest of his skin a flushed pink.
It looked exactly as if he had been seduced into heat.
