- Chapter 72 - He is His Duke (16)
Aside from that earlier dramatic cry, the hole fell silent once again.
However, Felix Cheng was clearly no longer as worried as before. He rolled a small pebble between his fingertips, one that Jiang Yi had tossed out as a signal of his safety. The two shared a tacit understanding: one stayed silent, and the other followed suit. Felix sat with his long legs drawn up against the wall, arms resting relaxedly on his knees, eyes closed to rest.
In this deserted corner with the perfect amount of light, it was an ideal spot for a mid-morning nap. Felix’s body relaxed, his head resting lightly against the wall. In these precious moments of regained freedom, he was content to linger in comfortable repose.
Thus, when Jiang Yi stealthily nudged his way out of the hole, he was met with the sight of his “Prince” napping. The sleeping Prince had his head tilted back slightly; the flowering vines trailing down the wall cast a peaceful shadow across his cheek, and the usual cold distance in his features had completely vanished. A few strands of silver-white hair poked at his forehead, fluttering with his shallow breaths.
Jiang Yi forgot the sights he had seen inside the mouse hole. He intentionally slowed his pace, stood on his tiptoes to grab a flowering vine on the wall, and gave a little kick, swinging himself toward Felix.
Oh no stop, stop, stop! Don’t hit the Prince, don’t wake him up.
Jiang Yi held his breath, his stiff tin clothes even indenting slightly from the tension. Fortunately, he managed it; his body came to a halt, limbs splayed out as he clung to the wall.
“Phew,” Jiang Yi let out a long sigh.
After resting for a moment and relying on his nimble agility, Jiang Yi soon found himself hugging a blooming morning glory, the one closest to Felix. His intention was to sit inside the flower; since he was so small, it served as a perfect seat where he could sit beside the Prince and enjoy this rare, beautiful moment.
Unfortunately, he forgot he was solid.
Solid metal, to be exact.
The moment Jiang Yi let go, his heavy body, far too much for the delicate flower to handle, began to plummet. He let out an involuntary cry. Realizing his mistake, he quickly slapped his hands over his mouth, his short legs kicking out instinctively.
The next second, the thick flowering vines tangled around his thighs, leaving him hanging upside down.
“Oh,” Jiang Yi squeaked softly. God was truly not being friendly to him. With a look of frustration, he struggled mightily, trying to reach the vines binding his legs.
Heave-ho, heave-ho. The brave Tin Soldier Jiang Yi cheered himself on.
“What are you doing?”
Felix’s slightly husky voice rang out right in Jiang Yi’s ear. Jiang Yi jolted, delivered a sharp kick, and the vine snapped.
“Aaah!”
With nothing left to hold him, the heavy, solid Jiang Yi fell straight down. The rushing wind hit his metallic face, and he couldn’t help but think of random things like how great scientists had studied free-fall, and he was currently participating in this dangerous activity; or how, under such immense force, even hard metal would inevitably sustain wounds…
Jiang Yi squeezed his eyes shut. He imagined himself smashing into a rock, his handsome face getting a small dent that would make the Prince no longer admire, trust or like him.
“Oof.”
The imagined pain didn’t come. Jiang Yi tumbled into a patch of softness. A comfortable warmth enveloped him, and he felt himself being squeezed by that soft surface.
“Jiang Yi,” Felix called his name.
It was the Prince’s voice. Jiang Yi carefully opened his eyes a crack. The first thing he saw was snow-white skin with lines running across it—the Prince’s palm print. Right now, this massive, cupped hand was his only support.
Jiang Yi looked up from the hand. Felix had his head lowered, his aggressive features drawing closer and closer, giving Jiang Yi a feeling akin to suffocation. He clutched his chest.
A few stray silver-white hairs brushed against his hard body. It tickled, but Jiang Yi didn’t dare move, turning as stiff and straight as a rod. Felix had a high brow bone and a straight bridge of his nose, which cast small shadows over his eyes. Deep in those shadows, his pupils, longer and paler than a normal person’s, were fixed on him, lingering.
“Jiang Yi.” Felix called him again.
Smack.
The sound wasn’t heavy, but Felix watched as Jiang Yi slapped… no, covered his own face, only revealing his bright eyes through the gaps in his fingers.
” Prince, I’m so sorry. This really wasn’t my intention.” Jiang Yi racked his brain for an excuse, finally settling on the morning glory that caused his fall. He pecked a finger out and pointed to the side. “You wouldn’t believe it, but it was all the flower’s fault.”
Felix: “What did the flower do wrong?”
“The flower insisted on being lazy. It didn’t catch me.”
“Was it not because you were too heavy?”
“Of course not!” Jiang Yi blurted out. His voice lost its previous softness in his hurry to defend himself, and he let out a frustrated “Aw.”
Felix let out a soft laugh. Warm breath puffed against the top of Jiang Yi’s head; he found his body acting up again, spinning several circles in Felix’s palm. After a while, Jiang Yi sighed and folded his heavy, stiff body, attempting to sit cross-legged in the palm.
Snap!
The sound of something breaking echoed. Felix had a bad feeling. The next second, Jiang Yi’s mischievous right leg fell off his body and rolled away. He watched with wide eyes as Jiang Yi held his own leg up high over his head, looking completely innocent.
“Oh, no”
For the seventh time, Jiang Yi tried to snap his right leg back onto his body, but the leg was like a broken part; no matter how much force he used, it wouldn’t go back in.
“Why did it fall off?” Jiang Yi lay dejectedly in Felix’s palm, sighing in despair.
Felix poked the rounded leg, his voice calm. “Does it hurt?”
“I really want the Prince to comfort me.” Jiang Yi took a deep breath. “But I am an honest soldier. Prince, it actually doesn’t hurt at all.”
“If it doesn’t hurt, it’s fine,” Felix said. Perhaps the transformation magic was failing slightly, and it couldn’t cause major damage to Jiang Yi’s true form.
The most important thing now was to find the wicked Dark Wizard. Felix began to recall the events after leaving the town. Where did they say they were going before finding the Wizard? Right, to the giant python’s cave for the Magic Mirror. They had likely wasted a lot of time in Ashlea Castle; they couldn’t afford to dally further.
Felix stood up and said, “We need to leave the castle now and head to the python’s cave. Before that, we need to find Nus.”
Jiang Yi asked, “Who’s Nus?”
Felix glanced at him. “My horse.”
“Then why are we going to the python’s cave?”
“To find a miraculous Magic Mirror.”
Jiang Yi was like a toddler with a thousand questions. “What do we need a Magic Mirror for?”
“To defeat the Dark Wizard.”
“Defeat the Dark Wizard.”
Felix interrupted him: “To defeat the Dark Wizard and break the curse on us.”
Hearing this, Jiang Yi immediately grew tense. Standing on one leg, he hopped forward. “Prince, what curse are you under?”
“The curse of losing one’s freedom.”
Felix spoke calmly, but Jiang Yi’s mind filled with various terrifying images. He drew his longsword, nearly losing his balance, and cursed, “Bad Wizard.”
“Yes, a bad Wizard,” Felix echoed.
“But, but before we go, we need to do one thing,” Jiang Yi said.
“What’s that?”
“Rescue the kind Sage.”
“The Sage?”
Jiang Yi nodded vigorously. He finally remembered Auden trapped in the mouse hole and explained to Felix: “I originally thought the Sage was dead; he was trapped in a wicked formation. But just as I was about to leave, he suddenly opened his eyes and begged me to save him.”
“Auden?” Felix knit his brows.
“Yes, I told the Prince about him before,” Jiang Yi said.
“I wasn’t paying attention. Continue.”
“Auden told me he received a punishment from God. He hopes to go out and seek atonement.”
“If it’s a punishment, he shouldn’t be wandering around.”
Jiang Yi waved his small hand, his sparkling eyes seemingly saying, ‘Prince, come closer.’ Felix stared at him for a few seconds before leaning down. “What is it?”
Jiang Yi whispered, “Honestly, I didn’t want to save him either, but he said that without his help, we wouldn’t be able to leave the castle.”
“Who knows if that’s just a lie to escape,” Felix said.
“Just in case. What if we really need him?”
Felix was silent for a moment, steadying the little man who was about to fall. “How do we save him? Recite some strange incantation, or call someone over?”
“Well. I was thinking, we take a big hammer and smash the mouse hole. Then we can get him out.” Jiang Yi gave a bashful smile.
Felix thought that. made a lot of sense. Things were perhaps not as complicated as imagined; strange things happened in this world all the time, and sometimes, all you really needed was a hammer.
Coincidentally or perhaps not so coincidentally. Felix actually found a hammer made of pure gold in the grass outside the mouse hole. He swung the gold hammer and smashed it against the opening.
After a cloud of dust settled, Felix and Jiang Yi saw Auden, looking like prey that had fallen from a spiderweb, lying on the ground, more dead than alive.
“So this is the legendary Sage.”
Felix gave a hum of acknowledgment. He took a piece of withered wood and used it to poke the Sage Auden, who was about the same size as Jiang Yi.
“The Sage says he’s currently in a weakened state, which is why he’s so small,” Jiang Yi explained.
“He’s fainted.” Felix nudged Auden’s face with the tip of the wood; the Sage’s eyes remained closed.
“Maybe we should feed him some dew.” One-legged Jiang Yi hopped onto the grass, cupped some sweet dew in his palms, and hopped back to feed it to Auden.
“Prince, the books all say to do this.” Jiang Yi looked up at Felix, his smile radiant, showing off his “erudition.”
Jiang Yi’s smile was always infectious; a faint smile appeared on Felix’s face as well. “Mm.”
The big and the small sat on the grass, quietly waiting for the Sage who had drunk the dew to wake up.
Jiang Yi said, “If he still hasn’t woken up in half an hour, we’ll leave. With the bravest soldier of the Royal Guard here, I can definitely lead the Prince out of the castle.”
“Cough, cough, cough.”
Just as Jiang Yi was about to perform his excellent swordsmanship on one leg for Felix, Auden slowly regained consciousness.
The first words Auden spoke were: “Duke Felix Cheng, after six years, I finally see you again. Young Master Gnas is very worried about you.”
