- Chapter 27 - He is His Flower (27)
Raw.
Feverish.
Chaotic.
Consciousness slowly returned.
Xie Cheng first perceived the temperature different from his own habitually cool body heat a scorching physique was pressed tightly against his back. An arm, carrying a weight and presence that couldn’t be ignored, was loosely wrapped around his waist.
It was a bit hot.
Just like last night, when the flowing sweat soaked through the floral blanket until it was squeezed into a corner and kicked off the bed.
Xie Cheng’s lashes fluttered as he rolled over.
The folding bed wasn’t large, and this turn was exactly what a certain someone wanted. Jiang Yi effortlessly tucked himself into the “Immortal’s” embrace, his hand tightening around Xie Cheng’s waist.
The faint light of dawn filtered through the specialized fabric of the tent, softening every silhouette in sight. Jiang Yi’s nose lightly nuzzled Xie Cheng’s chin, and he repeatedly kissed those pursed lips.
Still a bit dry.
A little flower shouldn’t be lacking in water.
He needed to kiss them a few more times to moisten them.
Xie Cheng’s breathing grew slightly erratic. The lips held by Jiang Yi became exceptionally soft in their unconscious state, their color redder than usual, parting into a tiny slit with every breath.
“Xie Cheng”
Jiang Yi murmured, reaching out to cup Xie Cheng’s face. Perhaps due to the fusion of their body temperatures, the cold white skin felt warmed by his palm, glowing with a hint of pink.
The Immortal Flower smells so, so good.
Jiang Yi’s movements grew more cautious. He poked out the tip of his tongue and slid it into that tiny slit, bit by bit.
The sight before him glued his eyes shut; he traced that pink-tinted face almost greedily, noting the sprout emerging from Xie Cheng’s temple. The slender flower stem unfurled, then slowly curled back up.
So cute.
Like a little sprout letting out a lazy yawn.
Stripped of the sharp edges and distance he maintained when awake, Xie Cheng lay in the covers with a defenseless, ultimate beauty quiet and perfect.
A strong sense of unreality seized Jiang Yi.
He began to nuzzle randomly against Xie Cheng’s neck and chest, even asking shamelessly in a whisper, “Last night. did I take it all in?”
Tsk.
How annoying. He couldn’t even stay still during sleep.
Xie Cheng didn’t like being disturbed while sleeping, especially when his sleep quality was poor and his rest time had been cut in half.
“Shut up.” Xie Cheng grabbed that annoying hand and pinned it behind Jiang Yi’s back.
“Then I won’t talk, I’ll just kiss.”
“Don’t move.”
“Then I’ll just hold you. Can I just hold you?”
Xie Cheng turned his back to him decisively, leaving him with only one sentence: “Too hot. Move away.”
Jiang Yi looked at the back of Xie Cheng’s head and blinked. What a shame; Morning Romance Plan A was a bust.
But there was still Plan B.
Jiang Yi carefully pulled the duvet from the floor and covered Xie Cheng. He then took clean clothes from the space—from head to toe to accessories and stacked them neatly to the side. Only after doing all this did he step out of the tent with light footsteps.
To capture a man’s heart, the most important thing is to capture his stomach.
Chef Jiang Yi understood this truth perfectly.
*****
When Xie Cheng fully woke up, he found he had entered a life where everything was handed to him.
Clean clothes were folded and waiting; well-fitting shoes were placed neatly by the bed; water and towels for washing were just a few steps away.
And then there was breakfast.
Chef Jiang Yi, holding a large iron pot, was wearing a cartoon floral apron and humming a jaunty tune.
Xie Cheng:
Xie Cheng didn’t actually want to lose his basic ability to care for himself. He pushed aside the tent flap and walked out.
“Xie Cheng, Xie Cheng! You’re awake! Breakfast will be ready in a second!” Jiang Yi shouted.
Xie Cheng, Xie Cheng, you’re awake. Xie Cheng, Xie Cheng, you’re asleep. Xie Cheng, Xie Cheng, look at this. Xie Cheng, Xie Cheng, look at that. Xie Cheng, Xie Cheng, look at me.
Chattering away like a bird that couldn’t close its beak.
Xie Cheng covered his ears.
Jiang Yi had been waiting for him; the spatula in his hand began to stir frantically. Right in front of Xie Cheng, Jiang Yi cracked a palm-sized bird egg into the pot. Flames erupted from his other hand, and in the blink of an eye, the egg was fried to a crisp on the outside while remaining tender and runny on the inside.
The aroma of the fried egg was rich, the scent of char and savoriness perfectly blended. Jiang Yi fanned the air with his hand, trying his best to send the smell toward Xie Cheng.
“This is the first course. Uh… ‘Gold and Jade Filling the Hall’.” Jiang Yi held the tray in an awkward posture as he placed it on the small makeshift table.
“And the second course: ‘Clear Breeze and Jade Dew’.”
Jiang Yi put a handful of washed lettuce into a bowl and sprayed it with mineral water. He explained, “This space actually keeps things fresh. This is organic lettuce I found inside; you can eat it raw.”
Xie Cheng looked at the egg and the greens. “Jiang Yi, be normal.”
“Finally, the third course: ‘Hot Spring Cloud Silk’.”
Jiang Yi brought over two bowls of steaming food.
Xie Cheng took a closer look. “Braised beef instant noodles…”
“It’s not braised beef flavor.” Jiang Yi pressed Xie Cheng down into his seat. “It’s sauerkraut flavor, because I realized you prefer spicy, heavy tastes.”
Jiang Yi beamed. “I specially chose the classic Laotan Sauerkraut Beef flavor. You should eat something hot in the morning.”
Xie Cheng agreed with that much. Even as a flower, he needed to replenish his energy. And humans with fragile stomachs were destined to eat hot breakfasts.
The two sat across from each other at the small table, which was covered in a floral tablecloth, and slurped their noodles. Since it was their first “date,” Jiang Yi had scrounged up some dried flowers and flower-shaped candles to decorate the table.
They didn’t eat fast. Under Xie Cheng’s refined eating habits, Jiang Yi also learned to chew slowly, unconsciously slowing his movements and stealing glances at Xie Cheng, quickly lowering his head whenever the Immortal looked back.
“What is it?” Xie Cheng asked without looking up.
Jiang Yi put down his chopsticks and cleared his throat. “Where are we going later? I know a really fun place; many coup. many people go there.”
“Back to the base,” Xie Cheng replied.
“Ah”
Xie Cheng lifted his eyes. “Don’t want to go back?”
“It’s not that I don’t want to.” Jiang Yi didn’t want to leave a record of being irresponsible in Xie Cheng’s heart. His voice grew smaller. “I just think Jiang Shui and the others need to train more.”
Seeing Xie Cheng remain silent, Jiang Yi muttered an addition: “You have no idea how much they rely on me. That won’t do in the apocalypse.”
He spoke earnestly, even managing to squeeze out a look of deep concern for the team’s future the image of a responsible, visionary leader sacrificing personal feelings. He unconsciously straightened his back, trying to make his words sound more righteous.
Xie Cheng just looked at him flatly. “Done? If you’re done, pack up. We’re going back.”
“Is there no room for negotiation at all?”
“None.” Xie Cheng stood up to clear the bowls. “If you want to do anything else, handle the task at hand first.”
****
By the time Xie Cheng returned to the Immortal Base, a full day had passed. They arrived at the villa district near midnight. Darkness reigned, without a single star in sight.
He didn’t go to the bedroom. Instead, he walked straight to the top floor of the central row house and entered a room guarded by several ability users.
The base was new, lacking food and resources, and the location was chosen at random. Building the reception hall and the prison in the same place was understandable, even acceptable.
The new ability users were seeing the legendary Base Leader for the first time. After catching a glimpse of Xie Cheng, they quickly lowered their heads, waiting for the hem of his clothes to vanish past the door.
#What is the Base Leader doing here so late?
Captain Jiang is sleeping alone in an empty room
Countless headlines flashed through their minds. Then, they heard Xie Cheng’s cold voice: “You may leave.”
In the dead of night, Xie Cheng stepped alone into the room where Xu Le was held. After ensuring no one was around, he walked toward the wall.
The room was empty. Thick iron chains bound Xu Le’s hands and feet to a wooden stake a primitive and forceful method. Hearing footsteps, the weakened Xu Le instinctively raised his head. He hadn’t eaten in days; his cheeks were sunken, and his eyes bulged, bearing no resemblance to the “innocent and harmless” beauty from the original plot.
His throat squeezed out several harsh sounds. Just as he was about to defend himself as he had before, a cold gun barrel was pressed against his throat.
The force was undeniable, instantly cutting off his unspoken words. All that remained was the trembling of extreme terror as his pupils contracted sharply.
He shifted his gaze upward with great difficulty. What met his eyes was that well-defined, exceptionally beautiful hand.
“I’m interested in the thing inside your head.” Xie Cheng used the gun barrel to tilt Xu Le’s chin up. His tone was calm and icy. “I’m taking it.”
“You!” Xu Le suddenly struggled violently, his chains clattering. His eyes shook with intensity. “How do you know? How could you know?”
No wonder. no wonder. In my previous life, there was no such person as Xie Cheng.
“Answer one question.”
Xu Le swallowed hard. “Let me go.”
“In the last life” Xie Cheng used the ambiguous term. “Why did Jiang Yi want to kill Xiao Yu?”
“Let me go!” Xu Le shrieked.
“You don’t have the right to refuse.” Xie Cheng’s eyes narrowed, his brow furrowing with impatience. He pressed the gun harder into Xu Le’s throat.
A signal of imminent threat.
One second, two seconds a high-velocity bullet could pierce his chest at any moment.
Xu Le went limp, his hands dropping. He spoke in a hoarse voice. “In the last life… in the last life, Xiao Yu was wary of Jiang Yi. While Jiang Yi was away, he plotted and murdered everyone in Jiang Yi’s squad.”
“Who specifically?”
“Everyone.”
“Very well.” Xie Cheng’s voice dropped low.
It was just two simple words, but Xu Le quickly realized he had provoked a rage. It was an ultimate, icy silence. The indifference surrounding Xie Cheng turned into something physical; the slight tension in his brow carried a bone-chilling hostility.
He would die. He really would die. And it would be a true death. That was the first thought in Xu Le’s mind.
He stammered, like a man trapped in a corner. “I am one of Lord Gnas’s people. I belong to Lord Gnas. You can’t kill me.”
Xie Cheng wasn’t from this world; surely he would fear that name.
“Gnas.”
Hearing that familiar name, Xie Cheng’s face twisted in disgust, his lips pulling into a tight, downward line.
Xu Le continued to babble, treating the “deity” who gave him the chance at rebirth as a life-saving straw. He repeated that disgusting name over and over.
Click!
The crisp sound of a gun being cocked.
“Did he ever tell you? He is the person I loathe most in this world.”
Xie Cheng aimed the gun directly at Xu Le’s heart and fired without hesitation.
BANG!
Blood sprayed, staining half of Xie Cheng’s face.
“Disgusting, filthy thing.”
