The Beautiful, Strong, and Tragic Female Lead is Mine [Transmigration Into a Novel] - Chapter 19
The night had grown deep. Buildings stood in silent repose, immersed in the dark, while the trees that lined the streets swayed, their shadows like the claws of demons.
Xie Zhitian followed closely behind Luo Yang, hurrying toward the outermost city walls. The wind rushed past her ears, and a few strands of her hair lifted in the night.
Luo Yang moved at a very fast pace, often taking shortcuts and climbing directly over obstacles in her way. If Xie Zhitian hadn’t awakened her supernatural ability and possessed physical qualities far superior to an average person, she wouldn’t have been able to keep up.
As she traveled, Luo Yang watched the person behind her from the corner of her eye.
She was worried about the young mistress and had initially slowed her pace slightly. But when she saw that Xie Zhitian was keeping up effortlessly, she immediately returned to her usual speed.
“Her physical condition is so good. It seems the young mistress has been exercising.”
She couldn’t help but recall how Xie Zhitian had easily broken the stone slab earlier. In terms of sheer strength, she was already stronger than many modified humans.
“Could a normal person do that? Is the young mistress a rare genius with a special talent?”
Luo Yang was confused.
The apocalypse had, to some extent, caused women to evolve. It was also possible that the young mistress was lucky and her potential had been activated.
Zone Z had entered a full-scale evacuation mode. Along the way, Xie Zhitian saw many panicked figures being guided by guards toward various underground shelters.
Just as the city walls came into view, a low cry suddenly echoed from a nearby corner. The sound was not distinct and was almost drowned out by the surrounding noise, as if it could stop at any moment.
From the sound, it seemed to be a small child.
Xie Zhitian’s heart stirred, and she followed the source of the sound to investigate.
Hiding behind a holly bush was a little girl, about five or six years old, crying with a tear-streaked face. She was incoherently mumbling “Mama,” “Mama.”
Xie Zhitian went over and picked the little girl up. She asked, “Where is your mom? I’ll take you to her, okay?”
The little girl seemed too frightened to speak in complete sentences and just kept crying.
“She probably got separated during the evacuation. It happens with one or two kids every time.”
Luo Yang’s voice came from behind her. “There are two shelters nearby. Her mom is probably in one of them. Would you mind taking her there, young mistress?”
Xie Zhitian knew that Luo Yang was not just asking her to take the little girl. Luo Yang also hoped that after dropping her off, she would stay in the shelter and not come back out.
But she didn’t point this out. Instead, she agreed. “Alright, you go on ahead then.”
The little girl was clinging tightly to her collar, and Xie Zhitian couldn’t just leave her.
Luo Yang breathed a sigh of relief, and her figure quickly disappeared into the night.
It took half an hour to find the little girl’s parents.
They were frantic. When the father saw Xie Zhitian bring his child back, his knees buckled as if he were about to kneel. The mother, wiping away tears, pulled out a stack of tokens from her pocket to show her gratitude.
Xie Zhitian quickly held the man up and refused the money, telling them not to worry about it.
Worried about Luo Yang, she didn’t linger. She left the shelter and went against the flow of people, heading toward the edge of the district.
Soon, the city walls were in sight. The area was illuminated by fire, and the ground was littered with shattered flesh. The smell of blood was overwhelming.
The “aliens” were true to their name, with ugly, twisted appearances. Their eyes were blood red, and they were twice the size of a normal person. Their dark brown skin was covered in bulging veins and muscles, and huge wings sprouted from their backs, flapping constantly.
There were a dozen of these aliens in Xie Zhitian’s line of sight, hovering in the air. They clawed and attacked the warriors on the ground, their bodies entangled as they let out unintelligible roars.
And for some reason, perhaps due to the evolved humans’ abilities, these aliens attracted many crows and bats, which swooped at the people, their flapping wings disrupting everyone’s vision, though their attacks were not very powerful.
Xie Zhitian stopped and took the cross-repeater crossbow from her back.
It was a beautiful crossbow, with a dark blue body decorated with simple, elegant silver patterns. Its silver-blue wings spread out like a bird about to take flight.
Xie Zhitian had used a crossbow for many years, and this was the one she was most comfortable with.
Luo Yang had seen it earlier and asked where it came from. Xie Zhitian gave a vague answer, saying it was a weapon she had been using in recent training, and she was just using it for practical combat today.
Fortunately, the situation was urgent. While Luo Yang didn’t understand how she suddenly knew how to use a crossbow, there wasn’t time to delve into it.
And even though Xie Zhitian had demonstrated her strength in front of Luo Yang, the other woman was very much against her going to the battlefield.
Xie Zhitian felt that Luo Yang was being overly cautious. She had been through thousands of battles in her previous life, and her experience was vast. She only needed to glance at the aliens to gauge their strength and skill.
She wasn’t sure if she could beat a full-strength Luo Yang, but dealing with these few aliens was no problem.
Moreover, the modified humans who were fighting were not weak either. The aliens were falling one after another, and the warriors only suffered minor injuries, showing no signs of strain.
Xie Zhitian moved, darting toward the battlefield.
At first, she just used her crossbow in the shadows, secretly helping the warriors fend off some of the aliens’ attacks. Later, seeing that everyone was focused on the fight and no one had noticed her, she charged directly onto the battlefield to help everyone clear out the aliens.
With her excellent combat experience, she quickly integrated herself into the fight. The arrows flew one after another, their sharp tips reflecting the firelight as they swiftly pierced the aliens’ vital spots.
The number of aliens slowly decreased, and the situation became less urgent. Finally, someone noticed her. “Y-young mistress? Is that you, young mistress?”
The person’s voice was filled with undisguised surprise.
Xie Zhitian smiled. “It’s me.”
She glanced around and asked the warrior in front of her, “Where’s Luo Yang? Have you seen her?”
He pointed in a direction: “There are more aliens over there. She went to help out.”
Xie Zhitian thanked him and rushed in the direction he had indicated. Soon, she spotted Luo Yang’s figure in the chaos.
Her long hair was tied up, her indifferent eyes were streaked with blood, and the longsword in her hand gleamed like a crystalline flower in bloom.
This was Luo Yang’s other side. Unlike her usual quiet and distant demeanor, at this moment she was like a precision machine built for battle. Her moves were clean and every strike found its mark. Her figure passed through the moonlight with a graceful swiftness, and in an instant, her feet were surrounded by shattered corpses. The cruelty and beauty of war were strangely merged in her.
As Xie Zhitian watched Luo Yang attack so freely, a faint worry crept into her heart. She knew that Luo Yang’s injuries had not fully healed, and she couldn’t help but wonder if her movements were tearing at her wounds.
Just then, Xie Zhitian heard someone gasp behind her, “Luo Yang, look out!”
She looked up sharply to see an exceptionally large alien leaping toward Luo Yang.
Xie Zhitian didn’t hesitate and charged forward.
Several arrows shot out like lightning, hitting the alien’s two eyes with incredible precision. At almost the same moment, Luo Yang’s longsword pierced the alien’s heart.
The giant alien’s body crashed to the ground. In the mist of blood, Xie Zhitian saw Luo Yang turn around.
Her eyes, which were usually as clear as water, reflected the bloody light, filled with a killing intent.
She frowned and stared at Xie Zhitian. “Young mistress, why are you here?”
Xie Zhitian said, “I was worried about you.”
Luo Yang was stunned and subconsciously repeated, “Worried about me?”
Since the day she became a warrior, she had been told one thing repeatedly: your mission is to protect humanity; this is your value and the meaning of your existence.
Be strong, be tolerant, be self-sacrificing, and cast off all weakness. Fight tirelessly like a programmed machine.
Everyone made demands of her, seemingly without end. So she became accustomed to enduring, to being wounded, and even when her wounds ached, she wouldn’t slow down her attacks.
She had been on the front lines for so long that she had forgotten what it felt like to be protected.
“Yes, I know you’re very strong.”
Xie Zhitian raised her hand to strike down another lingering alien. She turned to Luo Yang and smiled. “But even the strongest people get tired. If you’re willing, you can try to rely on me.”
