The Beautiful, Strong, and Tragic Female Lead is Mine [Transmigration Into a Novel] - Chapter 101
Looking out towards Zone B, you could see a massive cloud of dust rolling up from the edge of the horizon. Even at a distance, a series of piercing alarms and the clamor of clashing weapons were carried on the wind, disturbing the peace.
Xie Zhitian continued to observe with her binoculars, a slight frown on her face. “Strange, the aliens have already entered Zone B.”
Tang Zhuoran was taken aback for a moment. “That fast? Let me see.”
Xie Zhitian handed her the binoculars, then pulled a few more new pairs from her personal dimensional space and gave one to everyone.
Sure enough, in the binoculars’ view, they could see the dense, dark shadows of the aliens, spreading rapidly like a tide within Zone B.
When the metal fence was still intact, the male soldiers could just about hold their ground—at worst, if they couldn’t win, they could run home. The aliens couldn’t break through the fence in a hurry, so they could just hide behind it and attack with long-range weapons.
But once the metal fence was breached, the situation became uncontrollable. The soldiers couldn’t hold their own, so they threw down their gear and fled for their lives. The scene was pure chaos, filled with non-stop screams.
A few more powerful female fighters tried to stabilize the situation, but because the aliens were too numerous and their teammates were useless, they could barely protect themselves, let alone anyone else.
Xie Zhitian’s eyes flickered, and she felt a flicker of hesitation. With her personality, she couldn’t just stand by and watch people get attacked and die, but if she intervened, there were many other concerns.
First, Isabella had repeatedly stressed that they were not to enter Zone B. If they ran over to help and were then framed by the people from Zone B, it would be very troublesome. She was all too familiar with the command-level style of doing things; both Zhou Quan and Li Changhui treated human lives like dirt. They had no regard for even their own subordinates’ lives and would certainly repay their kindness with treachery.
Second, while Zone A and Zone B seemed peaceful on the surface, they were actually like fire and water. If a conflict were to arise in the future, the very people she saved today might be clashing with her on the battlefield tomorrow.
Xie Zhitian glanced at her companions and the other fighters not far away, and saw that everyone was looking in the direction of Zone B, their expressions thoughtful.
She knew that at this moment, everyone’s feelings were probably similar to hers—torn and in a complete mess.
“Help! Someone save us!”
Just then, a few figures ran directly towards them. They were a few injured male soldiers, covered in mud and blood, stumbling and looking incredibly disheveled.
Right behind them, several monstrous aliens followed closely. They were excitedly flailing their limbs because of the scent of blood, their fangs still stained with blood.
Luo Yang quietly called out to her, “Tiantian, the mining camp isn’t far from here, and there are a lot of workers.”
Xie Zhitian understood. She raised her repeating crossbow and fired a series of cold, gleaming bolts, riddling the two aliens in the lead.
Seeing this, the other modified fighters around them with ranged weapons also sprang into action, and soon they had repelled the few aliens.
The modified fighters were the defense line for the mining area. If they did nothing, the workers left in the camp would eventually be in danger. No matter how rational and cold-blooded they were, they couldn’t stand by and watch innocent civilians suffer.
The few soldiers from Zone B were so relieved to be alive that they nearly cried with joy. Their legs gave out, and they knelt on the ground, thanking them profusely. Xie Zhitian didn’t want to get tangled up with them and simply nodded coolly.
However, the situation took a turn once more in the next second.
One of the fallen aliens suddenly lunged up, its claws gripping the ground as it threw its head back and let out a long howl. It was the desperate cry of a dying animal, incredibly shrill, and it sent shivers down everyone’s spines.
Xie Zhitian’s heart gave a lurch. She had a sudden, ominous feeling.
This kind of thing had happened before. Some aliens were pack creatures, with very strong kinship ties. A cry for help before death would trigger extreme rage in their companions, leading them to retaliate with a frenzy against the human fighters. They were like a bloodthirsty wolf pack; if one companion was injured, the pack would swarm forward, fighting to the last breath even if it was a suicidal charge.
Sure enough, not long after, hoarse alien roars echoed from all directions, getting closer and closer, accompanied by ground-shaking footsteps that kicked up clouds of dust.
A large horde of aliens was coming!
The aliens didn’t care about Zone A or Zone B; if there were too many of them, it would only be a matter of time before they broke through the fence separating the two zones.
The few injured male soldiers didn’t have much combat experience to begin with and had never imagined they would encounter such a large-scale alien attack in a place like the already-cleared Umbra City. They were so terrified by the sight that they went limp, like a pile of mud, unable to even crawl.
Xie Zhitian’s eyes narrowed, and she exchanged a look with her companions. Everyone tightened their grip on their weapons, getting ready for battle. Fighters from a distance, hearing the commotion, also rushed over to provide support.
In their sight, the surging black shadows of the aliens were already visible. Conservatively estimated, there were a dozen or more, all tall and monstrously ugly. Based on past experience, they were the type that were not to be trifled with.
The fighters all stepped forward, ready to engage. However, before anyone could make a move, a black figure glided lightly past, landing between the aliens and the A/B Zone fence.
By her physique, it was a tall woman. She was wearing a large black cloak, and her slender fingers were covered in a pair of black gloves. She stood with her back to the fighters, holding a silver scythe as tall as herself. She raised her eyes to look at the gradually approaching aliens.
“Hey, what are you doing! Get out of the way!”
“Danger! Get back! We have ranged weapons over here, we’re about to attack!”
A soldier who couldn’t stand by and watch shouted loudly at her. But the woman was deaf to their cries. She simply lifted the silver blade in her hand, utterly fearless, as if she were casually looking at a view.
The aliens were approaching with a ferocious momentum. It would be a bit of a stretch for even a powerful fighter to block them all alone.
Although Xie Zhitian didn’t know who the woman was, she still raised her repeating crossbow, ready to assist from the shadows.
When the aliens were just a few meters away from her, the woman finally moved. She shifted her body so quickly that in an instant, she was right in front of the aliens, her movements so fast that they were almost invisible to the eye.
In the next second, a dazzling flash of silver light went past. The aliens in the front had their heads separated from their bodies or their bellies ripped open. Before the blood could even gush out, the woman lightly tapped her toes and retreated to her original position as fast as the wind.
The massive bodies of the aliens crashed to the ground, a mixture of blood and viscera spilling everywhere. The enraged expressions on their faces had not yet faded, but their bodies were completely shattered, utterly lifeless.
Beads of blood rolled from the tip of her blade, quickly sinking into the dirt. The woman remained in her relaxed stance, without a single drop of blood on her.
It was as if, for her, this was not a fight to the death, but a form of enjoyment—like a cup of coffee or a slice of cake.
The aliens behind, seeing their companions killed, became even more murderous in their blood-red eyes. They roared like mad and rushed forward, their claws leaving deep gouges in the ground from the sheer force, as if they wanted to tear the woman to shreds and swallow her whole to get their revenge.
The woman leaped again, nimbly avoiding the attacks, and landed firmly on the broad, thick back of one of the aliens. Before it could react, something from her sleeve extended, wrapping around the alien’s neck. The woman pulled hard with her gloved hands and then jumped onto the back of another alien.
Behind her, the head of the first alien was cleanly severed, sliding off its neck and rolling onto the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust. The cut was incredibly clean, blood gushing out, giving off an oddly artistic feel.
Xie Zhitian squinted, finally getting a clear look at the thing in the woman’s hands.
A blood-stained silver thread.
The woman wore a bracelet on her wrist, and the thread extended from it, becoming an indestructible blade in her hand. Judging by the sharpness of the thread, the black gloves on the woman’s hands must also be made of a special material.
Gasps of awe came from the fighters around them from time to time. The expressions on their faces had already changed from initial worry to utter shock, and they began discussing in hushed tones.
“Who is this person? She’s so incredible…”
“I don’t know, I can’t see her face clearly.”
“Is there such a strong fighter in Sector 54? I’ve never heard of one before.”
“A modified fighter who uses a scythe… I think I’ve heard of her before… What was her name?”
“God help me if I ever have to fight her. I would literally die.”
Compared to the aliens’ fury, the woman seemed unhurried. Her figure weaved between the aliens, maneuvering with agility, killing almost every one with a single move. The hood of her cloak hid half of her face, her eyes concealed in the shadow, only revealing her delicate chin.
When the last alien fell, the battle was officially over.
More than a battle, it was a one-sided beating.
The woman lazily retracted the thread back into her bracelet, shaking the blood from the tip of her scythe. Perhaps the fight had made her feel warm, as she pulled back her hood, her hair tied in a ponytail flying in the wind.
Xie Zhitian couldn’t help but take a step forward, looking in the woman’s direction.
She was very beautiful, with fair skin and a stunning face. Unfortunately, a long scar nearly bisected her entire face, starting from the brow bone of her left eye, crossing her high-bridged nose, and extending diagonally all the way to her right cheek.
Despite having just killed a large number of aliens, the woman didn’t seem to show any emotional change. She was cold from the inside out. Whether she looked at the corpses of the aliens or at the male soldiers huddled in a ball, her gaze was incredibly apathetic, without a shred of warmth.
The woman, scythe in hand, walked towards the male soldiers who were still in a daze. When they saw her approach, they looked as if they had seen a ghost, all backing away at once, completely unlike how they would act towards their savior.
One of them apologized in a panic, “Miss Zhong, I’m sorry, we really couldn’t fight them. We didn’t mean to be a burden…”
“Men. Useless.”
The woman clearly wasn’t having any of it, lightly tossing out a few words. Her voice was low and held no hint of reproach, yet it was devoid of any emotion. The way she looked at them was as if they were trash, from a lofty height.
“Now get out.”
Although the men were scolded in public, not a single one of them showed any sign of dissatisfaction. Their eyes were filled with terror. When they heard her say “get out,” they almost stumbled to their feet in relief and scrambled away in a panicked rush.
The woman looked off into the distance. After she had cleared out the large number of aliens, the battle had gradually subsided and returned to quiet. The ground was littered with the shattered flesh and blood of the aliens. The blood flowed in rivulets, spreading across the ground like a dark red spiderweb, eerily sinister.
She was about to leave when she heard someone call out from behind her.
“Miss Zhong, wait a moment!”
She turned her head to the side. “Is there something you need?”
The ones who called out to her were a few young female fighters. After seeing the terrifying display of strength the woman had just shown, they couldn’t help but start to speculate on her identity, and they had been discussing it heatedly.
The woman called “Miss Zhong” had a very unique weapon and made no effort to hide her strength, which showed she had no intention of concealing her identity. A strong person from the opposing faction was worth keeping an eye on, so now that they saw she was about to leave, they decided to just ask directly.
The girls looked at each other, and one of them, mustering her courage, spoke up. “Miss Zhong, may we ask your name?”
Just as everyone had expected, the woman didn’t refuse.
She raised her eyes and looked over, her tone unperturbed. “Zhong Wanfeng.”
Xie Zhitian’s eyes widened slightly upon hearing this. It was an unfamiliar name. She was certain she had never seen it in the original book. It seemed the world of the book was much larger than she had imagined.
