- Chapter 2 - The Driver
However, a “White Moonlight”, the unreachable first love, remained etched in Gu Xun’s heart.
Rumble!
Thunder roared, and before long, a torrential downpour began outside. Yun Xi frowned slightly, standing barefoot before the floor-to-ceiling window.
In that book, it was written that on the seventh day of their relationship, which was also the day after Yun Xi’s birthday, Gu Xun asked to meet to break up. He left immediately after speaking, ignoring Yun Xi’s questions. Yun Xi was left sitting alone in the restaurant, watching the rain pour outside the window.
Was this the same rainstorm?
His phone vibrated. Yun Xi opened it to see a notification from an anniversary app: “You have been with Gu Xun for 7 days now!”
Yun Xi’s usually lively eyes stared blankly. He had a daring suspicion. To verify this guess, Yun Xi walked quickly to the hallway. From a pile of gift boxes and bags, he fished out an ordinary-looking paper bag. Inside lay a bright, tender-green beret.
Yun Xi stared at that splash of green for a long while. This was the birthday gift Bai Jingchen had sent him, insisting he remember to open it. In the book, after Yun Xi was dumped by Gu Xun, Bai Jingchen showed up to mock him, stating bluntly that Gu Xun had someone else in his heart and did not like him at all.
Picking up the green beret, Yun Xi went to the dressing room. Facing the mirror, he placed it on his head. Tender green is a notoriously difficult color to pull off, but on him, it made his skin look luminously fair.
“It actually looks quite good,” Yun Xi muttered expressionlessly. He took off the hat and dialed a number.
As if waiting specifically for his call, the other party picked up on the very first ring. Yun Xi leaned against the wardrobe, playing with the beret in one hand while holding the phone in the other, remaining silent.
The person on the other end could not hold back and asked, “Yun Xi, why are you calling me?” His voice was filled with ill-concealed anticipation.
“Bai Jingchen, you went to university in Country G, right? G University?”
On the other end, Bai Jingchen swallowed hard and said, “That is right.”
Yun Xi said slowly, “Then do you know someone named Su Yanqing?”
“Ah! Su Yanqing? Do not tell me you already know about that?” Bai Jingchen feigned shock with great affectation, waiting for Yun Xi to press for more details.
However, Yun Xi did not give him what he wanted. He simply gave a thoughtful, “Oh.”
When Yun Xi remained silent for a while, Bai Jingchen grew anxious. “Why are you asking about him? Do you know something? Did you and Gu Xun…”
“Shh,” Yun Xi interrupted. “Keep it down, will you? You are making my ears ache.”
Bai Jingchen forced himself to lower his volume. “Why are you asking about Su Yanqing? Did something happen between you and Gu Xun?”
Before he could finish, Yun Xi interrupted him again in that same unhurried tone. “I know a lot, including the fact that you have a crush on Gu Xun.”
Bai Jingchen froze instantly, falling dead silent. Yun Xi let out a low chuckle and strolled back to the window. A flash of lightning streaked across the sky, illuminating the horizon and highlighting Yun Xi’s beautiful yet somber face.
“So that is how it is,” he murmured.
Flustered, Bai Jingchen demanded, “How did you find out? What do you want? I am warning you, do not go talking nonsense.”
Looking at the name “Bai Jingchen” on his screen, fragments of the plot flashed through Yun Xi’s mind. In that book, he refused to accept that Gu Xun had dumped him. He insisted on approaching Gu Xun during his heat, leading to an accidental “bonding.” Under pressure from Yun Xi’s fathers, Gu Xun was forced to marry him.
However, Gu Xun had a “White Moonlight” in his heart named Su Yanqing. Last night, the person in the backseat of Gu Xun’s car was likely this White Moonlight. The flowers were for him, and the excuse for missing the birthday party was to pick him up from the airport.
“This is a classic melodramatic trope,” Yun Xi thought, his lip twitching.
Because Gu Xun loved someone else, he treated Yun Xi like thin air after the marriage. How could the pampered Yun Xi endure such treatment? The two became entangled in a toxic cycle of love and hate until Yun Xi’s fathers were killed in a shooting during a business trip. Yun Xi was imprisoned at home by Gu Xun and could not even attend their funeral.
Eventually, devastated by the news, Yun Xi took advantage of Gu Xun’s lapse in attention, escaped, and leapt into the sea to his death. And at that exact moment, Gu Xun realized he had long since fallen in love with this omega, who was as passionate as a rose. That was the final sentence of the book.
“Yun Xi? Yun Xi!”
Bai Jingchen’s frantic shouting brought Yun Xi back to reality. He rubbed his temples, feeling a wave of exhaustion. In the book, Bai Jingchen played a significant role, mostly serving to disgust Yun Xi.
In one scene, Gu Xun threw a few suppressants at a heat-stricken Yun Xi, telling him bluntly that he was disgusting and that he did not want to touch him. Yet the next day, Bai Jingchen showed up at Yun Xi’s door covered in hickeys and the thick scent of Gu Xun’s pheromones.
“So what if you are married to Gu Xun? He does not even care about your heat; instead, he came to sleep with me,” Bai Jingchen had sneered. “Yun Xi, how did you fall so low? If I were you, I would divorce him as soon as possible and get that permanent mark washed off.”
On the phone, Bai Jingchen was still rambling. Yun Xi’s head buzzed. Impatiently, he said, “You sent me a ‘green hat’ because you wanted to tell me Gu Xun is cheating on me and that he actually loves Su Yanqing?”
Bai Jingchen choked. “I did not mean anything by it; I just wanted to remind you.”
“So you are actually a good person?” Yun Xi rolled his eyes. Suddenly, an idea struck him. “Actually, I do not like Gu Xun that much anymore. Do you know why?”
“Is it not because he likes Su Yanqing?” Bai Jingchen asked instinctively.
“Heh, I will tell you a secret. Last night I went to his house and used pheromones to induce his rut. The result was…”
Bai Jingchen’s eyes widened. “What happened? He did not mark you, did he?”
“Shh, no. It is strange, is it not? Because he…” Yun Xi smirked and said playfully, “He is impotent!”
Bai Jingchen was horrified. “Impossible!”
Yun Xi continued his persuasion. “You know I am an S-rank Omega, right? I do not need to tell you what my pheromones mean to an Alpha. Besides, we are ‘fated pairs’ with a 100% compatibility rate. Even when his pheromones went out of control, he had absolutely no reaction down there. Is that normal?”
“It is not normal!”
“And I was shocked too! I kept asking him why he was not reacting. Gu Xun finally had to tell me in shame that he actually cannot perform. He has not had much contact with Omegas over the years precisely because of this.”
Yun Xi’s mind raced, forcing back his laughter to keep his voice steady. “Being an Alpha who is ‘incapable’ has made him a bit twisted. That is why he fell for Su Yanqing, who is another Alpha.”
Bai Jingchen was stunned. He never expected that the Gu Xun he had crushed on for years was hiding such a secret.
“Wait, that is not right. Then why is he still with you?” Bai Jingchen asked, a sudden realization hitting him.
Yun Xi lounged on the sofa. “Actually, it is because of my dad. You know how much he spoils me. Seeing Gu Xun acting aloof, he caused some trouble for Gu Xun’s company. I only found out yesterday myself. I feel quite guilty about it.”
Bai Jingchen realized, “So that is how it is.”
After hanging up, having successfully played Bai Jingchen and started a harmless rumor about Gu Xun, the heavy feeling from the dream had mostly dissipated. Humming a tune, Yun Xi called a familiar stylist to prepare for the “battle” tonight.
The rain stopped briefly in the afternoon, even letting a bit of sun through. Unfortunately, by evening, when Yun Xi left the studio, the rain started again. Because his mind was still a bit jumbled and he did not want to be a hazard on the road, he had not driven his own car today.
Checking the time, he hailed a ride-share. The app showed the driver was nearby. Yun Xi stepped out and waited by the curb. Soon, a car pulled up in front of him. He glanced at the license plate, confirmed it was correct, and opened the passenger door.
“Last four digits are XXXX. Please hurry, I am in a rush.”
The man in the driver’s seat did not respond, nor did he start the car. Yun Xi buckled his seatbelt and looked up. “Sir? Are we not going?”
Then, he internally raised an eyebrow. Are ride-share drivers this handsome nowadays? He looks much better than Gu Xun. But why was the driver staring at him in a daze?
Yun Xi waved a hand in front of the man. “Hello? Can we go?”
The driver snapped out of it, his gaze lingering on Yun Xi’s face for a few more seconds before looking away. “Where to?” the driver asked in a low voice.
His voice was nice too. Yun Xi gave the name of the restaurant and leaned back, focusing on the rain-streaked window.
At another long red light, Yun Xi stared at the signal for a few seconds before suddenly turning his head. The driver did not have time to look away, and their eyes met directly. At a distance of only a few dozen centimeters, Yun Xi could see the playful teasing in those almond-shaped eyes, as if the man had discovered a new toy.
“Mr. Driver, you should focus on the road,” Yun Xi said, squinting slightly with a curl of his lips. “If you keep stealing glances at me like this, what will we do if there is an accident?”
The driver looked away. “Sorry. You look familiar.”
That is a cliché excuse.
Yun Xi rested his chin on his hand, tilting his head to watch the man for a while. Suddenly, he pulled a business card from his bag, holding it between two fingers.
“This is my card.” Yun Xi flicked the card, a mischievous smile on his face. “Driver, I am about to go dump my boyfriend. If you want to pursue me, you had better seize the opportunity.”
The light turned green. The driver remained calm, stepped on the gas, and drove off. Yun Xi blinked, surprised the man was unmoved. The driver had clearly been lost in thought looking at him earlier; why would he not take the card?
Just as he was wondering, his phone rang. It was an unknown number.
“Hello?” Yun Xi answered.
“Hello, is this the passenger with the tail number XXXX? I am your driver. I am so sorry, I got stuck in traffic. I have arrived at your pickup point and I am flashing my hazards. Do you see me?”
Yun Xi was confused. If that was the driver, then who was the man sitting next to him?
Yun Xi turned his head slowly. They happened to reach another red light. The car slowed to a stop, and the “driver” turned to look at him.
Yun Xi covered the phone’s microphone and forced a fake smile. “Pardon me, handsome, but what is your license plate number?”
The “driver” also wore a faint smile. “A5678.”
Yun Xi checked the app. The plate of his booked driver was H5678.
Yun Xi felt his vision go dark. The driver on the phone was still asking where he was. Yun Xi took a deep breath, told the driver he had already left, hung up, and canceled the order.
The car was silent. The “driver” reached out and turned on the car’s music, playing a soothing piano piece.
Yun Xi had not encountered such an embarrassing situation in eight hundred years. In his mind, he cursed everything from his own “blindness” to the driver for not speaking up, and finally his ex, Gu Xun. Eventually, he regained his composure and smiled at the man. “You can drop me off at the next intersection. Thank you. I will pay you.”
“It is fine. It is on my way.”
Yun Xi fell silent.
After several piano tracks, the car pulled up smoothly in front of the restaurant. Yun Xi uncurled his toes and pulled out his phone with a smile. “Let me scan your QR code for the payment. Thank you for your hard work.”
The man in the driver’s seat did not move. Just as Yun Xi was about to bolt out of the door to escape the awkwardness, the man looked at him and said slowly:
“How about you use that business card to pay for the fare instead?”
