Chapter 3: The Whole Family Likes Men, Except Me (3)
Zhang Yulan’s brow twitched violently; Meng Zhichuan’s expression went blank.
The two of them stared at Xu Yangyang, one after the other, their intense gazes almost burning holes through her.
Xu Yangyang maintained her cowardly facade. Seeing that no one echoed her, she salvaged her own dignity by muttering under her breath: “Of course, it’s also possible I misunderstood.”
“Maybe Dad didn’t commit marriage fraud after all.”
The moment the term “marriage fraud” came out, Zhang Yulan could no longer maintain her outward calm.
She turned around immediately, closed her eyes, and took several deep breaths. Having bolstered her mental defenses, she strode aggressively toward Meng Rudeng. Looking at that momentum, Meng Rudeng was in for a world of pain tonight.
It took Meng Zhichuan a long while to snap out of it. “This… is your so-called brilliant plan?”
“Is there a problem?” Xu Yangyang glanced at him. “If you prefer, I can call Mom back.”
“Don’t!” Meng Zhichuan stopped her instantly. Better a fellow daoist dies than I. Though it was incredibly unfair to Meng Rudeng, for his own sake—and for Fang Tingyang—Meng Zhichuan had no choice but to harden his heart and let his father suffer.
But was his father truly like what Xu Yangyang said—someone who chose to be with Zhang Yulan just to satisfy the family and carry on the lineage?
Holding the same doubt was System 0357. It thought for a moment and couldn’t help but ask: “Host, how can you be so sure Meng Rudeng is the same as Meng Zhichuan?”
“I’m not sure,” Xu Yangyang said righteously. “I didn’t state it as a fact.”
“I merely voiced a tiny bit of doubt. As for whether Zhang Yulan chooses to believe it, and how much she believes, that has nothing to do with me.”
Xu Yangyang looked at the System with a half-smile. “But clearly, I guessed right, didn’t I?”
If Meng Rudeng had been pure and flawless from start to finish, Zhang Yulan would definitely not have reacted that way.
The System was choked. Before the mission officially began, it didn’t know the inside details either. This was a risk-control mechanism specially designed by the Main System to prevent the Transformation Guide and the Host from colluding.
Even so, 0357 felt that its “villain” Host was formidable. Given a little more time, she might turn the entire Meng family—and perhaps the whole world—into a chaotic mess.
Zhang Yulan originally intended to confront Meng Rudeng immediately, but after a few steps, she remembered Jiang Ni was still waiting for her downstairs. She was forced to suppress her anger and force a smile to accompany Jiang Ni.
Meng Rudeng was already family; he couldn’t run away. For now, Jiang Ni was still more important. She smiled, but it carried a hint of strain.
Jiang Ni was making her own guesses. Her thoughts twisted and turned, eventually evolving into worry for Xu Yangyang. She was well aware of Xu Yangyang’s current status in the Meng family. Because of that, she felt a strange nervousness for the young girl who had shown her kindness and warned her out of the goodness of her heart.
After I leave, will she be punished?
Images of Xu Yangyang suffering cold eyes and harsh reprimands at the Meng house circled in her mind, making her unable to sit still. Out of kindness, Jiang Ni proactively brought the conversation to Xu Yangyang, praising her non-stop.
Zhang Yulan, in a foul mood, instinctively wanted to contradict Jiang Ni and disparage her daughter to elevate Meng Zhichuan—hoping to make Jiang Ni like him more. But the words died in her throat as she recalled Meng Zhichuan’s murky private life.
Her thoughts were like clouds being pushed aside by a giant hand. Zhang Yulan realized belatedly that her daughter seemed much more sensible than her son. At least today, a few simple words from her had allowed her to see many things she hadn’t noticed before. Like Meng Rudeng. Like Meng Zhichuan.
Thinking of the two men in the house, the atmosphere around Zhang Yulan’s eyes darkened, though it dissipated quickly as if it had never been there. “Yes, Feifei has been sensible since she was a child.”
“It’s me who has neglected her all along.” Zhang Yulan felt a rare pang of guilt as she told Jiang Ni about the past. “When she was born, the family hit a crisis. Out of necessity, I had to send her to the countryside to be raised by my parents.”
“That ‘necessity’ lasted over ten years. She was only brought back recently.” Zhang Yulan murmured, “We’ve been estranged for so long, I don’t even know how to be a proper mother anymore.”
Jiang Ni listened quietly, occasionally chiming in.
After talking for a while, Zhang Yulan realized she had shared too much. She smiled apologetically. “As it happens, I’m free tomorrow. I wonder if President Jiang and his wife would do us the honor of joining us for a game of golf?”
Although things hadn’t even begun between Jiang Ni and Meng Zhichuan, Zhang Yulan didn’t mind doing the Jiang family a favor first to help them through their crisis. After all, she had the power to do so.
This was exactly why Jiang Ni had come today. Hearing this, she naturally and readily accepted on behalf of her parents.
Having achieved her goal, Jiang Ni didn’t disturb Zhang Yulan further. Zhang Yulan, preoccupied with her own heavy thoughts, didn’t try to keep her. All she could think about was going to find Meng Rudeng to demand the truth.
As soon as Jiang Ni left, Zhang Yulan stood up immediately. Deep down, she wanted to scream at Meng Rudeng and get to the bottom of it, but she knew that without concrete evidence, he would never admit it.
Despite her anger, Zhang Yulan was not an impulsive or reckless person. Suppressing her emotions over and over, she stared at the floor with a dark gaze, her expression unreadable.
Xu Yangyang did not return to the original host’s basement to rest. She wandered around and, taking advantage of everyone’s lack of attention, slipped into the media room to sleep on the sofa.
The media room was spacious, and the sofa was more than enough for her. Most importantly, this place was remote and hidden, allowing her to keep track of the family’s movements perfectly.
Closing her eyes, Xu Yangyang thought for a moment.
The original host had just graduated from university and hadn’t officially started working. She wanted to enter the family business, but neither Zhang Yulan nor Meng Rudeng had ever proactively brought up the subject to invite her—not even to start from the bottom.
0357 had not yet announced the formal mission, but given Xu Yangyang’s personality, she had to be fully prepared in advance.
After a night of dreamless sleep, Xu Yangyang went directly to Meng Rudeng the next morning to state her purpose: “Dad, I want to go to the company to gain some experience.”
Meng Rudeng, who favored sons over daughters and never cared for this daughter in the first place, instinctively refused: “No.”
“What would a little girl like you do at the company? Just dress yourself up nicely and find your father a rich son-in-law, that’ll be enough.”
Xu Yangyang smiled upon hearing this, showing no anger: “Dad, did you know? Mom already knows that Brother likes men.”
Meng Rudeng was shocked: “What? Your brother likes men?!”
“Not only that, but Mom also knows that ‘orientation’ is hereditary.” Ignoring the stunned Meng Rudeng, Xu Yangyang dropped the second bomb without changing her expression.
Meng Rudeng felt like he was seeing stars; his heart was instantly gripped by a giant hand. He was in a state of panic. After taking in his reaction, Xu Yangyang continued: “But the good news is, Mom doesn’t know yet that I’m actually just like Brother—I only like the same sex too.”
Meng Rudeng was shocked once again: “What? You like women?!”
The old man was like a broken record. Xu Yangyang stared at him expressionlessly. Though her tone was calm, the threat between the lines was obvious. “So, Dad, can I go to the family company now?”
Meng Rudeng instinctively wanted to refuse again, but upon meeting Xu Yangyang’s calm, bright eyes, the words of refusal simply wouldn’t come out.
“…Fine.” After much agonizing, Meng Rudeng finally agreed reluctantly. “But you must promise me that you won’t tell your mother any of this.”
Xu Yangyang didn’t promise. She simply said: “Dad, I already told you—Mom actually knows everything.”
“So, regarding the matter of you deceiving her and using her as a shield…” Xu Yangyang smiled sincerely. “I advise you to prepare yourself mentally and come up with a counter-strategy. Just because Mom hasn’t exploded yet doesn’t mean the matter is over.”
Meng Rudeng’s heart, which had settled slightly, immediately leaped back up. His face looked as foul as if he had swallowed a fly. He glared at Xu Yangyang. You sure know how to “comfort” someone.
Meng Rudeng clearly had something to hide. Xu Yangyang thought for a moment and continued her proposal: “Right now, I have a brilliant way to divert Mom’s attention away from you.”
“What way?” Meng Rudeng asked impatiently.
Xu Yangyang smiled and looked at him without saying a word.
Meng Rudeng froze, then said solemnly: “I’ll arrange a position for you as a Team Leader.”
Xu Yangyang said nothing.
“Supervisor.” Meng Rudeng gritted his teeth and added: “I can’t go any higher. You’re young, you lack seniority, and you have no experience or connections. It’ll be easy for people to gossip and point fingers behind your back.”
Xu Yangyang lazily lifted her eyelids, her face showing a hint of boredom.
Seeing this, Meng Rudeng cursed her in his heart. This daughter, who used to be cowardly and lacked a presence, had suddenly become forceful, and he found it very difficult to adapt. “Manager.”
“I suggest you quit while you’re ahead, otherwise—”
Xu Yangyang interrupted the old man’s threats: “Fine, it’s a deal.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you get what you want, Dad.”
Meng Rudeng couldn’t feel relieved at all. Even though Xu Yangyang was saying nice things, his heart was in a state of upheaval, unable to find peace.
After receiving the appointment notice from the company, Xu Yangyang kept her word. She immediately found Zhang Yulan, who was having afternoon tea, and dropped a bombshell the moment they met:
“Mom, I… seem to like girls too.”
Too? Like? Girls?
Zhang Yulan almost stopped breathing; her blood pressure spiked instantly.
Her husband, her son, and her daughter all had feelings for the same sex that exceeded the norm. What about me then? For a rare moment, she felt lost. Do I like the same sex or the opposite sex?
Could this whole family, including me, be gay?!
