Chapter 26: I’m Convinced After Being Severely Educated by My Rival (3)
Seeing her attitude change so rapidly, Director He’s heart felt complicated.
Could you at least be a little tougher? This entire variety show is sponsored and invested in by your family. What on earth are you afraid of? Is it Xu Yangyang’s casual beauty offensive?
Director He turned his head away, speechless, and looked at the other four.
Gan Duanling and Deng Bokai were very tactful, both announcing on the spot: “The two of us will share a double room too.” They politely said to Duan Qingli and Ying Chen, “Our relationship has grown a lot on this trip, so let’s leave the single rooms for the seniors.”
Although their agency had instructed them to cling to the three female guests for hype and minor scandals to boost their traffic, after witnessing Xu Yangyang’s methods and Fu Ying’s arrogance, how could they dare to shamelessly approach? They were certain that if they showed even a hint of such intent, those two women would ruthlessly cause them “social death” on the show.
Instead of that, it was safer and more effective to stick together as a duo for “bromance” hype—successfully fulfilling the company’s requirements while finding a scandal partner that wouldn’t bite back.
The final result was exactly what Ying Chen had hoped for, but as he scanned the group, he felt inexplicably uncomfortable. It felt… as if he were being ostracized.
Duan Qingli didn’t have many ulterior motives. Hearing this, she thanked the two boys very solemnly. “Thank you so much.”
The two waved their hands repeatedly. “No, no, it’s what we should do.”
Once the rooms were assigned, Director He told everyone to take their luggage to their rooms. They had been traveling for over seven hours, and celebrities are delicate. With a pampered heiress like Fu Ying present, Director He didn’t dare push them too hard.
Fu Ying had the most luggage: four large suitcases and two oversized bags. Xu Yangyang’s eyelids twitched at the sight, but she said nothing, silently carrying her single suitcase up to the room.
Whether at home or traveling, Fu Ying always had nannies and bodyguards. She had never done heavy labor in her life. Now, staring at her mountain of luggage, she was at a loss. The rooms were on the second floor with no elevator. It was pure muscle work.
The others were also stars who needed to maintain their image, so they had plenty of their own gear. One by one, they disappeared with their belongings, leaving her standing there alone, looking pitiful and helpless.
The crew was not allowed to help the guests; this had been agreed upon beforehand.
Fu Ying’s fans were already worried:
“Ahhh, someone help my daughter! She can’t lift those!”
“If she can’t lift them, why bring so much? Does she think she’s on a luxury vacation? She brought this on herself.”
Ying Chen’s fans, who already disliked Fu Ying, immediately mocked her: “What’s it to you? Baby Ying can bring whatever she wants. If you don’t like it, fight me!”
Xu Yangyang knew the “silly-sweet” supporting actress was a delicate princess. After dropping off her own bag, she immediately turned back. She tilted her chin at Fu Ying. “Are these two bags yours?”
Fu Ying nodded instinctively. “Yes.”
In the next instant, Xu Yangyang bent down, grabbed a bag in each hand, yanked them out of the trunk, and headed for the stairs without looking back.
Fu Ying was stunned, but her eyes brightened slightly. She hurriedly struggled to pull down a suitcase and stood at the base of the stairs, waiting for Xu Yangyang like a lost puppy.
Even though she always opposes me and is very annoying, she actually has quite a bit of chivalry, Fu Ying thought silently.
This weight was nothing to Xu Yangyang. After she took the suitcase Fu Ying had moved to the stairs, Fu Ying ran back to the car to fetch the next one. After a few trips, Fu Ying followed behind Xu Yangyang, holding only her handbag, and spoke awkwardly: “Thank you.”
Xu Yangyang glanced at her. “Don’t mention it.”
“Wooo, Sister Yan Man is so nice. Thank you for taking care of our daughter.”
“Yan Man is too kind. Unlike Ying Chen—Baby Ying gave him so many gifts, yet he wouldn’t even help her move a box. Is he even a man?”
“Gan Duanling and Deng Bokai are men too, why don’t you mention them?”
“Don’t bring them into this. Our Little Gan and Little Deng are ‘skinny dogs.’ They were panting just moving their own boxes, let alone helping Fu Ying.”
Eventually, all of Fu Ying’s luggage arrived safely. The room was about thirty square meters—not huge, but clean. Since all the supplies were brand-new and provided by the sponsor (Fu Ying’s own family), she found it tolerable despite her initial disdain.
Once inside, Fu Ying occupied the vanity and began arranging her high-end skincare products. The colorful array of bottles made Xu Yangyang’s head spin.
Xu Yangyang had nothing much to unpack. She only had a cleanser, basic toner, and a few sets of comfortable clothes.
Finishing her setup, Fu Ying realized she had taken up almost all the space. Her expression stiffened. “Do you have things to put here? I can clear some room for you.”
“No,” Xu Yangyang refused. “Go ahead and put your stuff there.” She stood up. “Dinner is ready. Come down when you’re finished.”
“I’m finished!” Fu Ying quickly followed her. A sliver of subconscious reliance on Xu Yangyang had begun to grow in her heart.
As they walked, Fu Ying looked around curiously. Downstairs, there were several cats, all fluffy and fat. The most ridiculous one was an orange-and-white tabby that was so round it looked like a mini-truck… or a little fat pig.
Fu Ying’s eyes sparkled. She ran over and poked its belly. “You’re too fat!”
“This ‘Cat Village’ is the real deal. Any random cat looks better than my picky eater at home.”
“Jealous. I can’t imagine how happy they’ll be this month.”
“But our Baby Qingli is allergic to cats! (Marmot scream).”
Duan Qingli froze when she saw the cats. She looked at them for a moment and silently went back to her room. Everyone thought she was afraid or disliked them, but three minutes later, she reappeared with a sneaky grin, approaching the fat tabby. “Hehehe, mommy’s here, sweet baby!”
Knowing her fans would worry, she said to the camera: “It’s fine, it’s fine! I took allergy meds in advance!”
Xu Yangyang: “…” Facepalm. Not a single one of them is normal.
The dinner was a feast. The village chief had killed a pig, two chickens, and a duck to welcome them. The aroma of wood-fired cooking filled the air. There was braised pork hock, ginger duck, mushroom chicken stew, and more—over ten dishes.
Xu Yangyang was the most enthusiastic. She sat down and dug in. The pork hock was tender and melt-in-your-mouth, not greasy at all. She drizzled the thick, savory sauce over her rice. It was heavenly. Even Fu Ying, who usually dieted, ate two large bowls.
After dinner, it was time to draw tasks for the next day.
-
Xu Yangyang & Fu Ying: Tilling and loosening soil.
-
Gan Duanling & Deng Bokai: Hunting/foraging for ingredients.
-
Ying Chen & Duan Qingli: Starting the fire and cooking.
Fu Ying’s face went dark when she saw “Tilling soil.” Me? Farming? I can barely lift a handbag, how am I supposed to swing a hoe?
Xu Yangyang, however, saw an opportunity to stir up trouble. “Director, is there a rule saying we can’t swap tasks?”
Director He blinked. “Actually, no.”
Xu Yangyang smiled meaningfully. “Then I’m relieved.”
Fu Ying’s eyes lit up. She looked expectantly at Ying Chen, hoping he would offer to swap. But Ying Chen wanted to stay with Duan Qingli to build their “couple” narrative. He lowered his eyes, trying to ignore her.
However, the other four guests all stared at him. The pressure was so high he couldn’t play blind anymore.
Ying Chen’s fans were furious: “This is moral kidnapping! Why force him if he doesn’t want to?” The “skinny dog” idols Gan Duanling and Deng Bokai were quick to read the room. They offered to swap with Fu Ying.
But before they could finish, Ying Chen—feeling his reputation was at stake—stepped forward and reached out to Fu Ying. “Give it to me.” His hatred for Fu Ying grew; he loathed her persistence for ruining his plan.
Fu Ying wasn’t stupid. She felt his anger and resentment. He knew she was delicate and had never done housework, yet he had stood by until others shamed him into helping. If it weren’t for the idols, he would have let her suffer.
Am I really that unimportant to him? Fu Ying felt a wave of sadness. She hesitated to hand him the slip. Ying Chen’s impatience flared—Was she doing this on purpose to embarrass him?
The atmosphere was incredibly awkward. Then, Xu Yangyang stepped in.
“Hey, hey, what’s with all the drama? I just asked the director a question out of curiosity. Why are you all acting so reluctant?” She put an arm around Fu Ying’s shoulder and snatched the slip. “Forget it, I’ll do your share of the field. It’s no big deal.”
Ying Chen’s face turned even uglier.
Fu Ying was stunned. “Can you do it?”
Xu Yangyang replied, “Watch me.”
Fu Ying nodded slightly. “Then… thank you. I won’t forget this once we’re done filming.”
Compared to Ying Chen, who repeatedly hurt her, Fu Ying found herself trusting her rival more. She would rather bow her head to Xu Yangyang than beg Ying Chen for scraps of attention.
She turned to Ying Chen coldly. “Never mind. You didn’t want to swap anyway. If you did, you would have agreed before the others spoke. I don’t want to ‘morally kidnap’ you, lest your fans attack me again. I can’t handle that kind of ‘blessing.'”
She grabbed Xu Yangyang’s arm. “Let’s go.”
Later that night, Ying Chen’s agent warned him: “Soothe Yan Man, or she’ll ruin you on this show.”
Ying Chen, frustrated, invited Xu Yangyang to meet privately, away from the cameras. Xu Yangyang went, purely to cause more chaos.
“Manman, you’ve changed,” Ying Chen said in his deep, practiced “smoldering” voice. “You didn’t use to treat me like this.”
“Yes, I’ve changed. I’m your daddy now; I’m full of surprises,” Xu Yangyang gave him a cheeky smile. “Speak up or get out.”
Ying Chen suppressed his rage. “Is it necessary to make me look bad on TV? What do you gain?”
“A lot,” she counted on her fingers. “Mainly, seeing you unhappy makes me very happy.”
Ying Chen tried a different tactic—the “seduction” play. “I wasn’t ignoring you before… I just didn’t think it was the right time. But if you insist… we could have a secret relationship. You know my career is at a peak, so we have to be careful. Be considerate of me, Manman.”
He gave her what he thought was a dazzling smile.
Xu Yangyang smiled back, then pointed to the side. “What about her?”
Ying Chen’s smile froze. He turned his head stiffly and saw a furious Fu Ying standing there.
Fu Ying, having heard everything, was livid. She turned and ran.
Ying Chen chased after her. “Yingying, let me explain!”
Xu Yangyang followed behind, adding fuel to the fire: “Yingying, don’t be mad! Ying Chen is just helpless. For his career, he can only have a secret relationship with me. Don’t be sad he chose me over you; who told me to be so beautiful and charming?”
Ying Chen, pushed to his limit, roared at Xu Yangyang: “SHUT UP!”
