The Beautiful but Obscure Star Is Targeted by a Scheming Movie Star - Chapter 13
“There’s no need to examine Ran-ran. The entire nursing home just had a collective check-up last week before you came back.”
Early the next morning, Tang Jingran woke up and packed his things before taking Director Mama to the hospital for an examination. The Director’s name was Mei Run, and she was 78 years old this year.
She had no other health issues, aside from chronic high blood pressure.
Every time Tang Jingran returned, he would take Mei Run to the hospital for a check-up. Sometimes, when Mei Run got busy, she would forget to take her medicine…
Once, she forgot her medication and fainted, ending up in the hospital. Fortunately, the doctor’s examination showed no major problems, but they specifically instructed her to take her medicine on time.
Ever since Tang Jingran learned about this incident, he insisted on taking Mei Run to the hospital for a check-up every time he came back.
“You should give up on that idea; I won’t back down on this matter.”
When Mei Run came out of the examination room, she saw Tang Jingran standing in the hallway, staring blankly at his phone.
She knew this child had something on his mind; his mood had been low ever since they returned from the mall last night.
But she also knew that this child would not take the initiative to talk about it.
“Director Mama.” Hearing the movement, Tang Jingran put away his phone. “Please sit here for a moment while I go get the test results.”
Mei Run sat down, smiling as she watched Tang Jingran’s retreating figure.
“Doctor, how are the results this time?”
Tang Jingran sat in the chair, looking at the examination report.
“The results this time show that the blood sugar is a bit high, but it is still within the normal range of fluctuation. It might be related to her recent diet.” The doctor moved his gaze away from the computer and continued, “However, she still needs to pay attention to her diet over the next few days and take the prescribed medicine on time.”
“For now, there are no other issues.”
“Alright, thank you, doctor.”
“Let’s go, Director Mama.” Tang Jingran picked up the medicine and came over to take Mei Run home.
“Ran-ran,” Mei Run caught Tang Jingran’s hand and patted it gently. “If anything is bothering you, you must tell Director Mama.”
“Don’t worry all by yourself.”
Tang Jingran met Mei Run’s kind eyes, but the words he wanted to say still couldn’t make it out of his mouth.
He gave a small smile. “It’s nothing, I’m just a bit tired from participating in the variety show these past few days.”
“Alright.” Mei Run didn’t push him. “When we get back, Director Mama will cook your favorite food for you.”
She continued to instruct him: “Remember, you must never show your ears in front of anyone.”
The first time Tang Jingran’s ears appeared was when he was seven or eight years old. After Mei Run saw them, she specifically cautioned him, telling him he could never expose them to anyone.
Mei Run was also the only person who knew his secret.
Tang Jingran nodded, his heart suddenly filled with mixed emotions. Director Mama had reminded him that his identity was special.
He thought of the intimate way Gong Yingxiao and that woman looked at the mall entrance yesterday, and he felt an indescribable feeling in his heart. But he also knew clearly that he had no standing to be jealous.
Returning home, Mei Run told Tang Jingran to rest while she worked with others in the kitchen to cook. Tang Jingran sat on the sofa in the living room, fiddling with the cat-shaped pendant in his hand, feeling a strange tightness in his chest.
He had never been in love and didn’t know what love was supposed to look like.
To say the relationship between the two of them was a friendship didn’t quite feel right either.
Sometimes he felt that Gong Yingxiao was very special toward him, but at other times, he felt it was all just his own wishful thinking.
After all, neither of them had ever said anything to the other.
As of now, their relationship could only be described as that of colleagues.
His purpose in entering the entertainment industry was solely to earn money; he had never imagined having any kind of relationship with Gong Yingxiao.
This was an accident, something beyond his expectations.
But Mei Run had reminded him—he had to protect his secret first and foremost. He couldn’t let anyone discover his true identity.
Not even Gong Yingxiao.
Furthermore, the gap between them in every aspect was too large.
That night, Tang Jingran lay in bed looking at the gift he had bought for Gong Yingxiao, thinking back once more to the two figures he had seen last night.
Tang Jingran tossed the gift onto the bed, rolled over, and buried his face in the quilt, muttering softly.
“So annoying.”
Ding-dong.
The phone screen beside him lit up, popping up a new message.
Tang Jingran groped for the phone and opened it to look.
The next moment, he jolted upright in bed as if he’d received an electric shock.
[Gong Yingxiao: I am at the gate of your orphanage.]
The time shifts back to the moment yesterday when Tang Jingran had replied to the messages.
Gong Yingxiao was radiating a low-pressure aura, impatiently interrupting Jiang Guo’s words.
“If there’s nothing else, you can leave.”
However, Jiang Guo suspected that what Gong Yingxiao probably meant was “If there’s nothing else, get lost,” so he quickly packed his things and took his leave.
He couldn’t afford to provoke this “Cold Yama”; it was better to get out of there quickly.
Gong Yingxiao drove himself toward his local residence, but halfway there, he received a call from his older sister, Gong Lingya.
“Speak.”
As soon as she picked up, Gong Lingya couldn’t help but click her tongue. “Did you swallow gunpowder? Why is your temper so explosive?”
“I swallowed a missile,” Gong Yingxiao’s cold, lifeless words came through the phone receiver.
Gong Lingya: “…”
To be honest, she couldn’t quite get her brother’s sense of humor.
“Isn’t your variety show on break today? Come to the neighboring M City to pick me up.” Gong Lingya commanded into the phone. “Your brother-in-law had a last-minute business trip and can’t make it. Oh, and when you come, bring me two starch sausages.”
Gong Yingxiao: “…”
“Address.”
“My little brother is the best! Mwah! I’ve sent the address to your phone.”
When Gong Yingxiao arrived at the location, his sister was sitting on a park bench in an evening gown, barefoot, laughing hysterically while watching funny videos.
“Oh my god, this is hilarious!”
“Eek!” She jumped when she looked up. “You walk without making a sound! You scared me to death!”
“Where are the starch sausages?”
Consequently, a crowd of passersby saw a handsome man in a well-tailored suit handing two starch sausages to a bright, beautiful woman with a cold expression.
“Tsk,” Gong Lingya critiqued. “No chili powder.”
Gong Yingxiao: “…”
Gong Yingxiao took a deep breath. “Get in the car.”
“Where are you staying?” Gong Yingxiao asked his sister in the car.
“That hotel up ahead is fine.” Having said that, she observed her brother’s expression. “What’s wrong? Did you get dumped?”
Gong Yingxiao gave her a cold look. “You’re overthinking it.”
Gong Lingya: “Heh heh.”
Gong Yingxiao: “…”
Gong Yingxiao parked the car outside. “We’re here.”
“Tsk, walk your sister up, and by the way, pay for the room.”
Gong Yingxiao had no choice but to walk his sister inside with a cold face.
Passing by the mall from earlier, Gong Yingxiao paused for a moment when he saw a familiar figure.
Gong Lingya asked, “What’s wrong?”
Gong Yingxiao was certain he hadn’t seen wrong—the figure in the mall was Tang Jingran—but when he wanted to take another look, the person was gone.
“Nothing.”
Tang Jingran stared at the message back and forth twice, unable to believe it.
Why would he come here? Tang Jingran called him directly.
The call was connected instantly, leaving Tang Jingran stunned for a moment.
With the call connected, neither of them spoke.
After a short while, Gong Yingxiao let out a chuckle. His voice was inexplicably low and deep as it traveled into Tang Jingran’s ear. “Why aren’t you saying anything after calling?”
This was the first time they had spoken on the phone. With the atmosphere of the night, Tang Jingran suddenly felt a bit nervous.
“No… wait a moment, I’m coming out.”
After saying that, he threw on a windbreaker and prepared to head out. Seeing the plush pendant on the bed, he put it in his pocket anyway.
When Tang Jingran opened the door, he saw the man leaning against the car, the light stretching his shadow long.
A red glow sparked at his fingertips; the burning smoke slowly rose into the air, blending into the color of the sky.
Hearing the movement, Gong Yingxiao stubbed out the cigarette, his deep eyes gazing toward the person walking toward him.
When Tang Jingran met the other’s gaze, he felt a bit unable to look him directly in the eyes.
“Why would you come here?”
Gong Yingxiao stood up straight and walked toward Tang Jingran, stopping about a meter away.
“Don’t worry, I don’t have a hobby of investigating people’s addresses.”
“I just happened to run into your manager, Yan Jun, when I was leaving the production team and chatted for a bit. I knew you came here, and I happened to have business in the area, so I came to see my partner.”
“Is that not allowed?”
Perhaps because it was nighttime, Tang Jingran felt that the other man’s low, slow, and magnetic voice was actually damn sexy.
He raised a hand to touch his earlobe. “Of course it’s allowed.”
Gong Yingxiao laughed again, then took another step closer, raising his hand to straighten Tang Jingran’s folded collar.
As he withdrew his hand, his fingers accidentally brushed against the fair, warm neck, causing Tang Jingran to shrink his neck slightly.
“Sorry, is it very cold?”
Tang Jingran felt that the current atmosphere between the two of them was somewhat abnormal. He tilted his neck and took a step back.
“No.”
Then he took out the prepared gift from his pocket. “Here, a gift for you.”
Gong Yingxiao took the gift with surprise and asked, “Why are you giving me this?”
“Do you not like it?”
“No,” Gong Yingxiao said slowly. “I like it very much. Thank you.”
Looking at the other man’s appreciative expression, Tang Jingran wanted to ask about the scene he saw yesterday several times, but the words stayed stuck in his throat.
“What’s wrong? Is there something else you want to say?”
Tang Jingran suddenly felt a bit hesitant and shook his head lightly. “Nothing.”
Gong Yingxiao held the gift in his hand and took another step closer, asking in a low voice, “Is there really… nothing?”
The distance between the two was excessively close; it seemed that if either of them moved just a bit, they would touch.
Tang Jingran’s dark eyes looked into the other’s deep gaze. In the depths of those eyes, it seemed as if a more secret emotion was burning, about to burst forth.
Tang Jingran’s heart gave a violent thud. He felt a sense of alarm; what was reflected in those eyes was also the emotion in his own.
Tang Jingran uncontrollably pulled back, but Gong Yingxiao was quick and caught his wrist.
Seeing this, Gong Yingxiao let out a low laugh. “What are you hiding from?”
Tang Jingran couldn’t pull his wrist back and spoke up: “It’s too late; you should head back quickly.”
Gong Yingxiao’s long fingers rubbed the inside of Tang Jingran’s wrist twice before letting go, no longer teasing him. He looked at Tang Jingran and said, “Yesterday, I was taking my sister to a hotel.”
Tang Jingran suddenly looked up at him.
Gong Yingxiao met his gaze.
Tang Jingran: “Why are you telling me this?”
Gong Yingxiao asked back: “And you? Didn’t you want to know?”
Tang Jingran’s eyelashes fluttered slightly as he pursed his lips.
“I said it because I wanted to.” Gong Yingxiao took a step back. “Go inside. I’m leaving.”
Gong Yingxiao stood by the car, watching Tang Jingran’s retreating. Suddenly, the owner of that backpack stopped and turned around.
“Actually… I did want to know.”
After saying this, Tang Jingran didn’t wait for a reaction and went straight inside, closing the door.
Gong Yingxiao looked at the somewhat flustered, retreating figure and, once he realized what happened, couldn’t help but chuckle.
So cute.
I want to kiss him.
