- Chapter 2 - A Sudden Turn of Events
“Field battle… rich people really know how to play…”
The veins on Feng Jingbo’s forehead throbbed, and his usually gentle expression almost cracked. He took a deep breath, trying hard to calm his emotions.
Feng Jingbo had done charity for years, helping many patients as well as children with physical or intellectual disabilities. After adjusting for a moment, he brought his compassion and patience back up to their maximum levels.
“Where is your friend’s grandfather’s house?”
“In a house at the foot of the mountains in the suburbs. But an old friend invited him out to play yesterday, so he’s not there right now. Ah, it’s actually perfect that he’s not there. The two of us can enjoy ourselves to our hearts’ content…”
Feng Jingbo raised his hand and rubbed his brow: “Forget it. Go to my house.”
Given Lin Xiaozhu’s current disastrous state, how could he feel safe leaving him home alone?
The night grew deeper, and the world outside the window was pitch black, save for the flickering streetlights. Feng Jingbo leaned against a cushion, closed his eyes, and began to rest. He intended to nap for a bit to let his eyes and brain recover.
He had suffered from severe insomnia for the past two years. He had seen many doctors, but it was all to no avail. Once he settled this poor kid, he would go back and take sleeping pills to get some rest.
The cold fragrance of bamboo seemed to linger in the air. His mind gradually relaxed. In his dreams, there seemed to be a bamboo forest bathed in sunlight. The wind blew through the leaves, making a rustling sound. Sunlight filtered through the bamboo, cut into thin fragments that swayed and shimmered with the breeze.
Around him was only the sound of insects—it was incredibly quiet…
“President Feng, President Feng…” the driver called out cautiously.
Feng Jingbo snapped his eyes open, a look of astonishment on his face. He had actually fallen asleep just now without taking any pills!
Perhaps it was because there had been too much work lately, and encountering such a special child had left him so mentally exhausted that he finally drifted off.
Feng Jingbo thought silently as he unbuckled his seatbelt. Lin Xiaozhu followed him out of the car, staying right at his heels.
“Butler, arrange a guest room for him.” Feng Jingbo said, pointing to the youth beside him.
“Yes, sir.”
Lin Xiaozhu looked bewildered: “Aren’t we going to roll in the sheets?”
The butler’s foot slipped, and he nearly tumbled over.
Feng Jingbo’s mouth twitched: “I’m tired. See you tomorrow.”
“Wait…” Lin Xiaozhu wanted to keep him there, but Feng Jingbo had already strode upstairs and disappeared.
Lin Xiaozhu lay on the soft, large bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. He took out his phone to complain to his friend.
“He suddenly didn’t want a field battle anymore and took me to his house. Then, he simply didn’t roll in the sheets at all. What should I do?”
The message went unanswered for a long time. Lin Xiaozhu glanced at the time in the corner of the screen. It was so late that Hu Li likely wouldn’t reply until tomorrow. Lin Xiaozhu buried his head and fell into a deep sleep, soon entering dreamland.
Meanwhile, upstairs, Feng Jingbo was tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep at all. He eventually had to take out his sleeping pills.
At noon the next day, Lin Xiaozhu finally stretched and rolled out of bed.
The butler smiled at him: “The Young Master is coming back soon. Mr. Lin, why don’t you stay and have lunch?”
Lin Xiaozhu was still pondering how to rekindle the flame with Feng Jingbo. Hearing this, he immediately agreed.
At the dining table, Feng Jingbo ate silently, quiet and elegant. He was refined and gentle, and every movement carried a sense of noble grace, like a painting. However, there was a faint shadow of dark circles under his eyes, creating a small flaw in his handsome appearance.
Lin Xiaozhu nibbled slowly on the human food, overwhelmed by the novelty. Hu Li had taken him to eat a few meals before, and the taste was okay, but compared to the Feng family’s chef, it was like the difference between heaven and earth!
After the meal, Feng Jingbo picked up his laptop and began working again. His eyes remained on the computer as he multi-tasked: “Do you have anyone you’re familiar with? Have them come pick you up.”
“Grandpa is busy, but it’s lunchtime now, so Hu Li should be free.”
“Alright. Call him and pick a place to meet. I’ll have the driver take you.” Feng Jingbo picked up a nearby notepad and wrote down his private number.
“Don’t run around alone in the future, especially at night—it’s too dangerous. This is my number. If you have a problem you can’t solve, find me.”
“Thank you, Feng Jingbo.” Lin Xiaozhu folded the note carefully and tucked it into his pocket like a treasure.
Lin Xiaozhu got into the car and headed to the commercial center to wait. Hu Li arrived in a hurry and pulled Lin Xiaozhu into a cafe to sit down.
Hu Li was enchantingly beautiful, but this stunning creature currently had dark circles under his eyes and a haggard expression.
“Hu Li, what’s wrong? You look terrible.” Lin Xiaozhu said worryingly. “I’ll take you to see a vet!”
People nearby heard this and turned around, their expressions incredibly complex.
Hu Li’s mouth twitched: “I ran into some trash at the bar last night and fought with him. I’m fine now; I just didn’t rest well, so I have dark circles. I’ll be okay after some coffee.”
Lin Xiaozhu finally relaxed and told Hu Li everything that happened the night before. Hu Li’s expression grew uglier and uglier.
After talking a lot, Lin Xiaozhu’s mouth felt dry, so he took a few sips of coffee. He looked at Hu Li and tilted his head in confusion.
“Why are you unhappy? I got his number, and we’ve both visited each other’s homes once. I think sparks are flying fiercely between us!”
Shut up!
Hu Li pointed at the note on the table: “The signature says ‘Daddy Long Legs’ [anonymous benefactor]. You call this ‘having an affair’? The man is looking after you like you’re mentally disabled!”
Lin Xiaozhu was stunned.
Hu Li raised a hand to his forehead: “I told you to seduce the man, but you took it upon yourself to add plots about contract marriages and surrogacy. He’s a materialist, of course he thinks you’re a fool.”
“I was reading novels recently to brush up on common sense…” Lin Xiaozhu lowered his head and fidgeted with his fingers, feeling extremely guilty.
Hu Li didn’t stay mad at his common-sense-lacking companion. His eyes darted around: “I have a friend who is a manager at the Feng family’s entertainment company. You should sign on to become a star.”
The Feng family was a massive conglomerate with hands in many industries. Starry Entertainment was one of them. Hu Li, a minor assistant director, also worked for this company and knew some colleagues.
“Yeah, if I become a star, I’ll have many more chances to interact with Feng Jingbo. Hu Li, you’re so smart.” Lin Xiaozhu’s eyes shone as he grabbed the other’s hand. “Quick, teach me some more techniques for seducing men.”
Hu Li: “…Let’s wait until you actually have a chance to see Feng Jingbo again. His family owns countless companies.”
There were plenty of people trying to climb into his bed. Fighting through the crowd to stand out—how could it be that easy?
An hour later, in the same cafe.
Liu Xin held a contract, drinking coffee while sizing up Lin Xiaozhu.
“Your looks are clean and cute—that’s fine—but there are many people in the entertainment industry who look better than you. Can you act? Have you studied singing?”
“I can’t act, and I’ve never studied singing.” Lin Xiaozhu sat with his hands on his knees, behaving himself and looking obedient.
And Liu Xin… only felt despair. Fine, he was just here to join the company and munch on a fixed salary.
Liu Xin pushed the contract forward: “I’m only signing you for the sake of my friendship with Hu Li. I’ll do my best to get resources, but don’t hold your hopes too high.”
“Thank you. So a person with no talent like me can also be a star.” Lin Xiaozhu was deeply moved, the human world was truly magical.
“That’s because I’ve made a name for myself and have a quota for signing people directly, okay!” Liu Xin’s mouth twisted in annoyance. “Starry is one of the biggest star-making companies in the industry. The competition is much fiercer than you imagine. Someone like you can only get a fixed salary. I’ll do an assessment for you tomorrow to see what kind of training I should arrange.”
Seeing the other party flare up, Lin Xiaozhu, the nepotism hire, nodded timidly.
Liu Xin pondered for a while: “What is your goal for entering the entertainment industry? Do you want to rely on connections to munch on a fixed salary, or do you want to become famous?”
“I want to marry Feng Jingbo!”
Liu Xin suddenly stood up and excitedly grabbed Lin Xiaozhu’s hand.
“I just love new recruits with this kind of awareness!”
Lin Xiaozhu: “???”
The smile on Liu Xin’s face became a bit more fervent, and his attitude softened: “However, you have no hope with President Feng.”
“I received the latest news. It seems President Feng took someone home last night.”
Lin Xiaozhu’s eyes lit up. The person Feng Jingbo took home last night was him!
Liu Xin continued: “Old Master Feng flew over immediately today and is pestering President Feng to agree to a marriage. The female stars in the company are going crazy. Almost all of them have gone to the top floor, lining up to be chosen like a royal concubine selection.”
“You… don’t stand a chance.”
Lin Xiaozhu’s mood dropped as he followed Liu Xin to Starry Entertainment to familiarize himself with the environment. His head was currently full of worries about how to dig up and transplant his bamboo family.
Liu Xin was quite busy. After showing Lin Xiaozhu around, he let him go home first.
Since it wasn’t quitting time yet, the elevator was empty. Lin Xiaozhu clicked the button for the first floor, only to find the elevator going up.
“Oops, I should have entered the elevator later.” Lin Xiaozhu knocked his head in annoyance.
With a ding, the elevator stopped at the top floor. An old man leaning on a cane walked in, followed by a middle-aged man wearing Taoist robes.
“With so many female stars, isn’t there a single one whose ‘fate’ matches my grandson better?”
For no reason, Lin Xiaozhu felt a wave of panic. He took a step back and pressed himself against the elevator wall, trembling.
The Taoist stared fixedly at Lin Xiaozhu, his fingers constantly calculating.
“Truly a marriage made in heaven! Looking at his features, his five elements perfectly prosper your grandson…”
To Lin Xiaozhu’s surprise, the Taoist didn’t punch him in the face or brutally beat him back into a little bamboo shoot. Instead, he praised him desperately, acting as if he wanted him to marry into the Feng family immediately.
If he didn’t know how much money Hu Li had, he would have suspected this Taoist was a shill hired by Hu Li.
Old Master Feng pushed the glasses up the bridge of his nose: “I’m getting old and my eyes are failing me. This girl really looks like a man.”
“He is a man. Moreover, he is a bamboo demon…”
Lin Xiaozhu was terrified. He hadn’t said a single word, yet his underwear was almost being stripped off by this man!
Old Master Feng sized him up: “Child, would you be willing to enter a contract marriage with my grandson, Feng Jingbo? As long as you bear him a child, I will give you a very generous reward.”
“I’m willing! There’s a bamboo forest in your newly developed resort. My whole family is right there…”
Just when the mountains and rivers seemed to end, a path appeared through the willows and flowers. For Lin Xiaozhu, it wasn’t just another path. It was a direct shortcut to the finish line, climbing straight to the peak of life!
Twilight settled, and the moon hung high.
Feng Jingbo sat on the sofa, using his computer to continue handling official business.
The front door suddenly opened. The Old Master, leaning on his cane, walked in with a beaming smile: “Jingbo, the wife I chose for you has arrived. You two will go get your marriage certificates tomorrow. Give me a great-grandson soon!”
Feng Jingbo looked up and saw a small head poking out from behind the door. The other party was wearing casual clothes, looking clean and cute with deer-like eyes that blinked at him.
“Hubby, we’re a family from now on~”
