- Chapter 50.1 - Relentless Persuasion — "Has she been here before?"
Whether she was a “top” or not didn’t really matter to Yu Xuanji; she had no particular preferences regarding positions and was fine with anything. However, there was one thing: she could not let this little dragon feel wronged.
Now, Cang Lan was draped entirely over Yu Xuanji, the two of them entangled so closely they seemed like a pair of inseparable conjoined infants. Inside the room, the crowd stood still and watched, while An Zhi and Ting Lan stole glances at the two from time to time. Yu Xuanji’s face remained largely expressionless, but the upward curve of her lips betrayed her deeper inner feelings.
Seeing that Cang Lan was holding her and refusing to let go, Yu Xuanji said with a smile, “A-Lan, the big goose has already been driven away by Huang Liu. You can come down now.”
Cang Lan buried her face in Yu Xuanji’s neck, nuzzling her right in front of everyone, and stammered, “Is… is it really gone?”
Even though she said this, and she knew the goose had been chased off, she still didn’t want to get down from Yu Xuanji. Yu Xuanji carried a faint scent of kitchen smoke, which, when mixed with her usual light, cool fragrance, sparked strange fantasies in Cang Lan’s heart. A scent that seemed detached from the mortal world was certainly enchanting, but Cang Lan preferred this rich, intense scent of the hearth; even the fragrance she inhaled was filled with Yu Xuanji’s love.
At this thought, Cang Lan’s gaze drifted into the distance, meeting the eyes of Lu Xuan, who was standing at the kitchen door looking at her with an expression of pure disdain. Lu Xuan expressionlessly gave her the middle finger, turned around, and slowly sauntered away from the kitchen.
Tushan Bai returned from repairing the chicken coop outside and headed to the kitchen for a drink of water, only to see a massive dragon blocking her view, having jumped directly into Yu Xuanji’s arms and refusing to let go. Tushan Bai had never seen such a thick-skinned, shameless evil dragon. Showing such affection in front of so many people was unseemly; she clearly didn’t know the meaning of the word “shame.”
In broad daylight, under a clear sky, she hadn’t expected to see such a chilling sight in her own kitchen. Tushan Bai pinched her philtrum hard, wanting to step forward and peel Cang Lan off herself.
After a moment, Cang Lan hopped down from Yu Xuanji. She straightened Yu Xuanji’s messy collar and surreptitiously leaned in to kiss the other woman’s dark hair. Then, putting on an act, she lifted a pot lid and asked, “What’s stewing in here?”
Witnessing this, everyone marveled at how quickly the Black Dragon King could change her face. Just a moment ago, she was whimpering and acting spoiled; now she wore a stern face as if everything before had been a mere wisp of smoke.
Yu Xuanji quickly followed Cang Lan’s lead: “These are silverfish Huang Liu caught from the Dragon Pond. They’re perfect for a stew—good for beauty, nourishing the blood, and longevity.”
At the mention of Huang Liu, the little weasel, who was outside slaughtering the geese, appeared at the door holding two plucked, dead, plump geese. He asked, “What did the Lady say about me?”
Lu Xuan chimed in, “She said you’re capable and eat a lot.”
Shaking the two geese in his hands, Huang Liu said with a grin, “The Lady sure knows how to compliment! I’ve already avenged the Great King. Look, Great King! These two geese will never dare bully you again!”
Lu Xuan curled half a lip and said, “What if their ferocity remains and they turn into two ghost geese to seek revenge?”
Huang Liu asked, puzzled, “Lord Demon Sovereign, if they truly became vengeful ghosts, I could handle them easily when they were alive; they’d have even less power dead, wouldn’t you say?”
Lu Xuan laughed, “You are right.”
After watching Lu Xuan leave, Huang Liu couldn’t help but lean toward An Zhi and Ting Lan, asking confusedly, “Have you noticed the Demon Sovereign seems like a different person these past few days?”
An Zhi asked, “Really? I didn’t notice.”
Huang Liu leaned in mysteriously. “Yes. You haven’t spent much time with her. Usually, the Demon Sovereign rarely speaks and never smiles in public. Only the Phoenix has seen her smile.”
Ting Lan asked curiously, “Could it be because the Phoenix left and entrusted her to our Master’s care before she went? Maybe that’s why her personality changed so much.”
Huang Liu nodded. “That’s very likely. I bet that’s it. The Demon Sovereign was moved by our meticulous care and warmth, so her personality gradually shifted.”
Just as he finished speaking, a shadow loomed over Huang Liu. He looked up and met Cang Lan’s expressionless gaze.
Huang Liu asked with a grin, “Does the Great King have orders?”
Cang Lan pointed at the two geese on the cutting board and then at the bone-cleaver in Huang Liu’s hand. “Give me the knife. This King will personally chop these two stupid things into minced meat!”
Yu Xuanji smiled and said, “A-Lan, there’s no need for that. Just cutting them into small pieces is fine. If you mince them, they can’t be eaten.”
Hearing this, Cang Lan immediately followed Yu Xuanji’s lead. “My wife is right. Wife, what size do you think is appropriate?”
Yu Xuanji gestured with her fingers. “About three fingers wide.”
Soon after, rhythmic chopping sounds echoed through the kitchen, one after another, unending. The onlookers watched as Cang Lan split the two geese down the middle with a venting fury, beginning a series of “dismembering” actions. As they watched, they felt as though the knife was hitting their own flesh, and they broke out in goosebumps.
Cang Lan grew happier as she chopped. Yu Xuanji watched her vent her anger as if she were playing and initially intended to let her be. However, within moments, she noticed the thick wooden chopping board had cracked down the middle. Realizing something was wrong, Yu Xuanji quickly called for her to stop. As it turned out, the board had indeed split in two, and even the stone table beneath it had cracked.
Unaware, Cang Lan turned back with an innocent look and asked, “What is it, Wife?”
Yu Xuanji pointed at the collateral damage of the board and the stone table, helplessly rubbing her forehead. She murmured, “When Tushan Bai sees this later, she’ll bring out the abacus to charge us for the damages.”
At that moment, Tushan Bai, having finished her water, returned to her post to repair the chicken coop. As she worked, she felt something tugging at her belt. Turning around, she saw several sturdy roosters scratching at her. Furious, Tushan Bai raised her water ladle and gave one a sharp blow to the head.
Cang Lan was clumsily trying to hide the damage to the stone table and chopping board when she saw Tushan Bai return with a dark face, carrying a dead rooster. Tushan Bai tossed the rooster onto the ground and said expressionlessly, “Extra dish tonight.”
Seeing her covered in dust and grime, Shen Xiu knew she must be exhausted from building the coop. She took out a handkerchief and gently wiped the sweat from Tushan Bai’s forehead. “You’ve worked hard.”
In an instant, Tushan Bai’s lips curved into a smile, and her voice softened. “It wasn’t hard at all. It’s just a chicken coop. Is there anything in this world that can stump me, Tushan Bai?”
Shen Xiu smiled. “Mm, you are the most amazing.”
Hearing this, Cang Lan’s hands on the stone table relaxed. She nudged Yu Xuanji and asked, “Wife, who would you say is the most amazing demon in this world?”
While frying chicken, Yu Xuanji answered without hesitation, “You, of course.”
Seeing the two about to bicker over a trivial matter again, Shen Xiu stepped in front of Tushan Bai and said, “Come, let’s go outside and clean this chicken.”
As Tushan Bai turned to leave the kitchen, she heard a booming collapse from behind. She bolted back and saw that her favorite natural jade table had split in two. The culprit stood by the stone table looking guilty, pacing around the kitchen—lifting a pot lid one moment, touching the salt jar the next, and then running behind Yu Xuanji to give her a quick touch before darting away.
Yu Xuanji smiled helplessly and just let Cang Lan be.
Seeing this scene and meeting Cang Lan’s defiant gaze, Tushan Bai remembered she had received a Baize brush from her earlier that day, so she slowly swallowed the insults rising in her throat. However, she still felt a lingering resentment that she couldn’t vent, which felt stifling.
At dinner, Tushan Bai looked at the table full of never-before-seen delicacies. She specifically went to the kitchen to get a large bowl, determined to eat as much of Yu Xuanji’s cooking as possible to get her money’s worth.
Cang Lan continued to pile food into Yu Xuanji’s bowl until the porcelain dish could hold no more. When the final fried shrimp was placed at the very top, the “palace of food” Cang Lan had built for her completely collapsed.
Lu Xuan sat opposite Yu Xuanji. Huang Liu, perched on a chair, noticed she looked somewhat somber while watching the King and the Lady’s displays of affection. He asked, “Lord Demon Sovereign, Senior Phoenix has been gone from the Wilderness for some time now. Why hasn’t she returned?”
Lu Xuan held the soup bowl in both hands for a moment before slowly speaking: “She’ll be back soon.”
Huang Liu couldn’t help but ask, “How soon?”
“Am I late?” A light female voice reached the ears of those eating. Cang Lan looked back and saw Ming Huang appearing at the door, smiling gently at them. “It seems I’ve come at an awkward time.”
Lu Xuan stood up, walked out the door without a word, a complex thought flashing in her eyes. She then took Ming Huang’s wrist and led her to the table.
Huang Liu hurriedly gave up his seat, ran to the kitchen with his bowl, and brought back a brand-new jade bowl. He filled it with rice and presented it to Ming Huang with both hands: “Senior Phoenix, here is your meal.”
Seeing Huang Liu’s eagerness, Ming Huang smiled and patted his furry little head. “Thank you.”
Lu Xuan expressionlessly stared at the hand Ming Huang used to pet Huang Liu. She stood up silently, moved her stool between the two of them, and used her chopsticks to put food in Ming Huang’s bowl. “Master, eat while it’s hot.”
Ming Huang smiled. Underneath the table, her left hand gently took Lu Xuan’s palm, slowly interlocking their fingers.
Cang Lan noticed the smile on Ming Huang’s lips and couldn’t help but ask, “Old Phoenix, you said you had urgent business and had to leave the Wilderness for a while. How are you back so soon? Is the matter settled?”
Ming Huang nodded. “Yes, it’s all handled. I missed A-Xuan at home too much, so I rushed back without stopping. I didn’t expect to make it just in time for dinner.”
Lu Xuan lowered her gaze, looking at her fingers tightly entwined with Ming Huang’s, and couldn’t help but tighten her grip slightly.
Cang Lan thought for a moment and said, “I wondered why the sky looked strange when I woke up this morning; it turns out you were back. Was there something important that made you leave the Wilderness so suddenly without a word?”
Ming Huang laughed. “Just some trivial matters.”
Cang Lan rested her chin on her hand, her gaze moving between Lu Xuan and Ming Huang. “Your A-Xuan stayed at my place for a long time. Food, drink, lodging, and so on… it’s not a small expense. Since we’re on good terms, I’ll give you a twenty percent discount as her guardian.”
Ming Huang couldn’t help but laugh. “Who taught you to say things like that?”
Cang Lan’s gaze turned to Yu Xuanji, looking proud.
