- Chapter 35.1 - The Dragon God’s Wedding – My Lady Has Eloped with Someone Else... She Doesn't Want Her Anymore.
Yu Xuanji was trapped in a dream.
In the dream, a sea of fire reached toward the heavens. Countless houses were engulfed by tongues of flame. People running to and fro were swallowed by the fire, falling to the ground with their skin split and flesh torn, their bones separating from their meat as they screamed in endless agony.
Yu Xuanji stood amidst the crowd fleeing for their lives. With an expressionless face, she raised the torch in her hand and set the entire village ablaze.
Cang Lan was napping by the bedside when a sudden gasp reached her ears. She opened her eyes and looked up to see Yu Xuanji clenching her teeth. Fine beads of cold sweat broke out on her forehead. One of her hands gripped the blanket tightly, while the other clutched Cang Lan’s fingers, struggling to wake up.
“My Lady! My Lady!” This was the first time Cang Lan had seen Yu Xuanji ensnared by a nightmare. She quickly reached out to touch Yu Xuanji’s forehead, wiping away the sweat, trying to wake her: “My Lady, I am here. Do not be afraid.”
At that exact moment, Ting Lan happened to pass by the bedroom door carrying a bundle of silk threads. Hearing the sounds of distress from within, she hurried inside and saw Yu Xuanji gripped by the nightmare while Cang Lan attempted to rouse her.
Ting Lan rushed forward to stop her: “Cang Lan, do not wake her!”
Hearing this, Cang Lan pulled her hand back. Ting Lan breathed a sigh of relief, muttering to herself: “Fortunately… fortunately…”
Cang Lan held the gradually calming Yu Xuanji, wiping the sweat from her brow, and asked in a low voice: “Why can I not wake my lady?”
Ting Lan explained: “It is like this. A person in a nightmare must not be awakened by external force. She must wake up slowly on her own, otherwise, the nightmare will follow her forever.”
Cang Lan nodded: “So that is how it is. I did not know such a thing was possible. I almost caused a great disaster and harmed my lady.”
Seeing that Cang Lan believed this explanation, Ting Lan secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Cang Lan held the still-sleeping Yu Xuanji, brushing her lips against her earlobe, and whispered: “Why does my lady have nightmares? I have already given her so much dragon blood; her body should have recovered by now.”
Ting Lan explained: “Nightmares are formed from the things one fears most in their heart. Perhaps the Master dreamed of something terrifying and cannot wake up for a moment. It has nothing to do with her physical health.”
Cang Lan murmured: “Something she fears… What is my lady afraid of? With me by her side, what could she possibly have to worry about?”
Ting Lan glanced secretly at the bewildered Cang Lan, lost in thought.
Yu Xuanji’s complexion gradually turned from pale to rosy. Cang Lan embraced her from behind, slowly laying her flat and placing a pillow under her neck. Having finished this, Cang Lan picked up the bowl of chicken soup she had prepared for Yu Xuanji and slowly took a small spoonful into her own mouth.
The chicken soup was fresh and flavorful, yet to Cang Lan, it tasted utterly bland. After two mouthfuls, she carried the bowl toward the kitchen to wash it, only to hear Yu Xuanji speaking in her sleep again.
Cang Lan lost all desire to wash the dishes. In the blink of an eye, she rushed back to Yu Xuanji’s side like a whirlwind, leaning over the bed with her ear pressed against Yu Xuanji’s lips. She wanted to hear if her lady was once again pining for that dragon in her dreams.
Yu Xuanji’s voice came in fits and starts.
“I will take you away… Let us go…”
“We will go far away and never come back…”
At that moment, Cang Lan’s heart froze into shards of ice; if thrown to the ground, it would have shattered. Her eyes widened as she stared at Yu Xuanji. Her chest throbbed with spasms of pain, her mouth open but unable to make a sound.
In the dream, her lady had eloped with someone else… eloped with that bastard.
Yu Xuanji didn’t want her anymore. She had eloped with another bastard, even saying she would take him far away and never return.
Yu Xuanji didn’t want her… Yu Xuanji didn’t want her… didn’t want her…
Cang Lan’s pupils dilated slightly. Densely packed pitch-black scales instantly covered her entire body. The white porcelain soup bowl in her hand was crushed into powder, yet the shards could not pierce her hardened palm.
The moment Cang Lan realized she was about to lose control, her tail had already slid under the covers, coiling around Yu Xuanji’s waist, the tip of the tail quietly probing toward her waistband.
In that instant, Cang Lan snapped back to her senses. She quickly withdrew her tail and crouched on the floor, picking up the shattered porcelain pieces one by one.
Before leaving the bedroom, Cang Lan stole a deep, lingering look at the sleeping Yu Xuanji.
Cang Lan swore that she would find that reckless bastard, tear him limb from limb, grind his bones to dust, and subject him to the most brutal execution!
But then, Cang Lan had a second thought: if she did that, how heartbroken would her lady be?
However, if she didn’t do it, her lady’s heart would be filled with thoughts of that bastard day and night. She might even treat Cang Lan as a substitute for him. Perhaps even when they were mating…
Cang Lan crouched on the ground, covering her face and wailing. She felt so wronged she could have died.
An Zhi, passing by, saw this scene. At first, she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her, but as she drew closer, it really was Cang Lan.
Seeing Cang Lan crying with tears and snot, An Zhi seemed to realize something. Her legs went weak as if her soul had been drained. She slumped to the ground with a thud, two streams of tears falling instantly: “Master… Master, how could you leave us like this…”
Cang Lan’s crying gradually stopped. She looked at An Zhi, who was sitting beside her and crying even harder, and couldn’t help but give her a kick: “What nonsense are you talking about? My lady is perfectly fine. Shut up and stop crying!”
An Zhi sniffled, looking even more disheveled than Cang Lan: “I am crying for my master. Why are you crying?”
Cang Lan stubbornly and arrogantly turned her head away, saying pathetically: “I am crying for myself.”
An Zhi climbed up from the ground and asked in confusion: “You are standing here perfectly fine, what is there to cry about? Seeing you cry so hard, I thought the Master had…”
Cang Lan sniffed hard and said: “My lady has someone else in her heart, and she is treating me as a substitute for that person. Can I not cry for myself?”
An Zhi felt as if she had heard something earth-shattering. She dug at her ear in disbelief: “Huh? What did you say? A substitute? What substitute?”
Cang Lan’s gaze turned cold. She grabbed An Zhi and flashed outside the cave, tossing her beneath the Bodhi tree. Standing over her, she demanded: “You talk too much. This King asks you: in all the years you’ve followed Xuanji, have you ever heard her speak of a ‘white moonlight’ or a childhood sweetheart? Tell the truth!”
An Zhi shook her head. She didn’t know what was wrong with this stupid dragon today—speaking nonsense and convincing herself she was a substitute. She had no idea what was going on.
Seeing An Zhi remains silent, Cang Lan threatened: “If you do not tell the truth, this King will tear every bone from your body and crush them. Will you confess or not?”
An Zhi shook her head quickly: “I really don’t know! The Master has always been a loner. In all these years, I’ve never seen her with a partner; she has always been alone. If you don’t believe me, you can ask Ting Lan. She never lies.”
Cang Lan gave a cold huff: “Hmph, I suppose a little ghost like you wouldn’t dare deceive this, King.”
But if An Zhi was right and Yu Xuanji had never had anyone before her, then why did she say those things in her sleep?
One dreams at night what one thinks of during the day. Since it had worsened into a nightmare, it meant it was an obsession of Yu Xuanji’s. If it wasn’t a deep love, how could it become an obsession?
Frustrated, Cang Lan punched the trunk of the Bodhi tree. She decided to wait until Yu Xuanji woke up to ask her about the origins of this matter. As she turned around, she came face-to-face with an aggressive Tushan Bai, who was dragging a skeleton by its leg.
The moment Tushan Bai saw Cang Lan, she yelled in a fury: “Cang Lan, you caught this little monster and threw it at my house to get revenge on me, didn’t you? Just because I wrote about the romantic exploits of you and your hidden treasure lady in my stories, you found a clingy skeleton to harass me. You have such a cruel heart!”
Cang Lan, already feeling uncomfortable and full of pent-up rage, found herself being scolded for no reason. Seeing Tushan Bai transform into a fox the size of a hill, Cang Lan assumed her dragon form and charged. A dragon and a fox began to battle in the sky.
Though Cang Lan was a divine dragon, the power of a thousand-year-old nine-tailed fox was not to be underestimated. However, Tushan Bai currently had only one tail left, and her strength was far from her peak. After several rounds, she landed on the ground, only to be embraced from behind by the skeleton.
Tushan Bai had been annoyed by it for days but couldn’t shake it off.
Cang Lan stood before them, stretching her muscles, and said: “Hmph, this King would never use such underhanded tricks to bully you. Besides, I caught this skeleton a while ago and sealed it in a jar for the Old Phoenix. It probably escaped from her place. You came here slandering this King without rhyme or reason. Since I am magnanimous, I will let it go for now.”
Tushan Bai helplessly tried to push the little skeleton away, but it clingily huddled closer. She was fuming with rage, yet had no idea what its deal was.
Seeing that the little skeleton seemed to really like Tushan Bai, Cang Lan’s eyes flickered. She smiled and said: “Since fate has brought you together, look at how much it likes you. It won’t let go. Why don’t you just give in? Don’t be so stingy.”
Tushan Bai grumbled: “Easy for you to say. It follows me at all hours—washing, eating, it even tried to sneak into my bed several times before I caught it.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Tushan Bai let out a howl and nearly jumped, pointing fiercely at the little skeleton: “In broad daylight, in front of all these people, you actually touched my butt! I’m going to take you apart bone by bone and use you as bookmarks!”
After Tushan Bai finished her roar of frustration, she saw the little skeleton slowly lower its head. Its hollow, dark eye sockets seemed to convey a hint of disappointment.
Then, Tushan Bai watched as it detached one of its own hands and offered it to her like a gift, resembling a small animal trying to please its master after making a mistake.
Tushan Bai froze. She took the bone hand, reattached it to the little skeleton, and then, without a word, grabbed its wrist and turned to leave.
As she passed Cang Lan, Tushan Bai said with a look of apology: “I acted out of anger; I was wrong. Please bear with me. In two days, I will personally deliver the newly revised version of my story. Your lady will surely like it.”
With that, Tushan Bai walked away, dragging the clingy little skeleton.
Cang Lan watched the fox and the bone leave and then returned to the cave dwelling.
Yu Xuanji was still trapped in the nightmare and wouldn’t wake up anytime soon. Having nothing else to do, Cang Lan stayed by her side, quietly accompanying her.
Cang Lan lay on her side, holding Yu Xuanji, her lips pressed against her forehead.
She had thought that the soothing presence of dragon breath would help Yu Xuanji sleep more peacefully, but to her surprise, half an hour later, Yu Xuanji began to talk nonsense again.
Yu Xuanji’s lips moved slightly as she spoke in fragments: “I believe you… Take me away…”
A moment ago, she said she wanted to take that bastard away, and now she was asking the bastard to take her away.
