- Chapter 19 - A Minor Punishment — The Evil Dragon Entrenched in Her Territory Guarding Her Mate
Cang Lan did not know how she had managed to utter such words that were so difficult to speak aloud. Feeling as guilty as a thief, she lowered her eyelids, biting her lower lip until it was covered in a dense thicket of tooth marks.
For a long time, the wick of a mermaid-tallow candle by the bedside crackled and popped. Yu Xuanji gently cupped Cang Lan’s chin with one hand, her fingertips rubbing against that layer of slippery, soft skin for a moment.
Cang Lan did not dare to meet Yu Xuanji’s eyes. In an instant, she heard Yu Xuanji say, “Is it because my health is poor, and you are afraid of hurting me, that you are unwilling to be intimate with me? Is that right?”
Cang Lan felt a surge of guilt for a split second, then nodded vigorously, following Yu Xuanji’s lead: “Mm. I… I’m just afraid that your mortal body wouldn’t be able to endure it, so… so I didn’t dare to get close to you.”
This statement was half-lie and half-truth. Cang Lan usually did not tell lies, nor did she disdain to tell them. But whenever she met Yu Xuanji’s resolute eyes, the little secrets hidden in the depths of her heart had nowhere to hide.
Cang Lan knew that deceiving people was wrong, and deceiving Yu Xuanji was even worse. However, this relationship—and this person—had been tricked into her hands from the very beginning. If Yu Xuanji ever recovered her memory and realized that those flowery words were all lies, wouldn’t she hate her to death?
At this thought, Cang Lan trembled with fear, and the gaze she directed at Yu Xuanji became even more guilt-ridden.
Yu Xuanji drew closer while holding her chin. Cang Lan’s heart beat faster and faster, nearly leaping from her chest to her throat. She slowly closed her eyes, her lips parting uncontrollably in an expression that was both dazed and inviting a kiss.
After a moment, something cool was pressed against her lips. Cang Lan licked it with the tip of her tongue; it was sweet and sour. Opening her eyes, she saw it was a pale pink sugar pill.
Cang Lan took the sugar pill into her mouth. The tense expression on her face relaxed slightly, but her mood gradually grew despondent. She didn’t know what was wrong with her; she had clearly deceived Yu Xuanji, yet she couldn’t find it in herself to be happy.
Yu Xuanji withdrew her hand, patted the top of Cang Lan’s head, and looked down at the needlework and cloth on the bed, saying, “The measurements are taken. I’ll make them tomorrow. How many do you want?”
Cang Lan blinked: “I still don’t know what that thing is.”
Yu Xuanji slowly untied her robe in front of Cang Lan. Seeing the little dragon hurriedly covering her eyes, she laughed and gently moved her hands away.
Cang Lan’s eyes immediately fell upon Yu Xuanji’s exposed undergarment and the deep cleavage within close reach, making her so ashamed she wanted to ram her head into Yu Xuanji’s body.
Yu Xuanji had long since become accustomed to Cang Lan’s reaction. With an air of calm indifference, she grasped Cang Lan’s wrist and pressed her fingers against the shoulder strap of the undergarment, letting her try to feel it: “Look, it’s just like the one I’m wearing now. Feel it.”
Cang Lan’s hand trembled. Her fingertips inevitably brushed against Yu Xuanji’s warm, soft skin, and her body began to heat up again.
Yu Xuanji said with a smile, “How is it? Do you like this kind?”
Cang Lan felt as if her head was about to evaporate. Her gaze was fixed intently on Yu Xuanji’s lips as they opened and closed; she couldn’t hear a word the other was saying. Cang Lan could only nod blankly: “Mm.”
The smile at the corners of Yu Xuanji’s lips deepened. She draped her clothes back over herself, then leaned into Cang Lan, resting softly against her chest and listening to the other’s surging, powerful heartbeat.
Cang Lan felt as if she had turned into a drought-demon freshly dug out of the earth—her entire body was incredibly stiff, and only her eyeballs could move. In her ear came Yu Xuanji’s gentle voice, saying, “Then I shall make a few more for you.”
The night grew deep. Cang Lan took off her outer robe and leaned against the headboard wearing a black inner garment. Yu Xuanji snuggled in her arms, holding that copy of Dream of the Red Chamber, telling her stories.
Cang Lan wanted to hear Yu Xuanji tell her a bedtime story every night. However, she currently only had the one copy of Dream of the Red Chamber, which she had “borrowed” from the Old Phoenix’s study a few days ago.
The Old Phoenix had a large collection of books. Seeing that Yu Xuanji was bored, Cang Lan regretted not “borrowing” a few more volumes at the time.
Yu Xuanji’s voice was low and gentle. She turned the pages and said, “This chapter is about Daiyu’s father falling seriously ill and passing away. After she finishes arranging the funeral, she takes her family inheritance to seek refuge at the Jia manor.”
Cang Lan couldn’t help but feel a bit of sorrow upon hearing this, sighing: “Daiyu is so pitiful; both her parents are gone. What is her ultimate ending?”
Yu Xuanji curled her lips into a smile and said, “It’s bad form to spoil a novel. I won’t tell you.”
Cang Lan gave a huff, took the book, and flipped to the very last page. After a glance, she flipped back with an expressionless face and said righteously, “I want you to read it to me!”
Yu Xuanji gave a helpless smile: “Fine, fine, I’ll read it to you. But we’ve already read one chapter today, and it’s time for us to sleep.”
Cang Lan reluctantly put the book aside, extinguished the candle at the bedside, and pressed herself tightly against Yu Xuanji, pulling the woman into her arms and rubbing against her several times.
Yu Xuanji’s hair was tousled from the rubbing. Cang Lan was full of wildness, especially when sleeping; she wished she could wrap all her limbs around her, behaving exactly like an evil dragon entrenched in her territory guarding her mate.
Sometimes in the middle of the night, Yu Xuanji would often be suddenly awakened by a heavy weight. Opening her eyes and reaching out to feel, she would find a cool, thick, long dragon tail coiled around her waist, the tip of the tail tightly entwined with her two legs.
The bedroom fell into pitch darkness, and the faint fragrance of the burnt mermaid-tallow candle still lingered in the air.
Cang Lan kept her eyes open and said something seemingly out of nowhere: “The Old Phoenix told me that the lifespan of humans is very short, and living to a hundred is considered long life. Wife, is this true?”
Yu Xuanji’s lips were pressed against Cang Lan’s neck, and her breath was warm as she spoke: “Mm. People who can live to a hundred are few and far between.”
Cang Lan was fraught with worry and deep in thought. There were some things she didn’t know how to say, and a thousand words turned into a sigh in the darkness.
Hearing Cang Lan sigh, Yu Xuanji reached out to touch her cheek and asked with a smile, “Why does such a young age come with so many worries?”
Cang Lan was instantly displeased upon hearing this: “You’re calling me young again. I’ve lived for one or two thousand years; I’m many, many years older than you.”
Yu Xuanji said, “But I heard Huang Liu and the others say that some of the great demons here have lived for tens of thousands of years. Compared to them, aren’t you still just a child?”
Cang Lan couldn’t win the argument and couldn’t bear to bite her, so she secretly pinched Yu Xuanji’s waist as a minor punishment.
Yu Xuanji let out a soft gasp, a very faint groan escaping from her throat. Afterward, she laughed softly and said, “A-Lan, you have never told me how we met, fell in love, and finally became partners.”
Cang Lan covered Yu Xuanji’s eyes and pressed her head against her own chest: “That is a long story that cannot be explained in a few words. It’s so dark, wife, go to sleep. Sleep, sleep. If you want to know, I’ll tell you when I’m free.”
About half an hour later, Cang Lan finally coaxed Yu Xuanji to sleep. She whispered “Wife” into Yu Xuanji’s ear, and after receiving no response, Cang Lan lifted the animal-skin blanket and crept off the bed.
Cang Lan went to the study and looked at the Ginseng Baby sleeping soundly in the corner. Her lips curled into a slow smile as she swiftly stuffed the baby into her Universe Bag and then silently slipped out.
Cang Lan rode the clouds and mist for a thousand miles. She opened the Universe Bag at her waist and casually tossed the still-sleep-talking Ginseng Baby into a pitch-black, deep forest.
After completing all this, Cang Lan breathed a sigh of relief, and her whole dragon-self became much lighter. Humming a little tune and clapping her hands, she circled in the sky for a while before impatiently returning to the cave.
Cang Lan felt wonderful in her heart. Without these obstacles competing for favor, Yu Xuanji’s gaze should finally be focused entirely on her.
Humming her tune and kicking off her shoes, Cang Lan arrived at the bedroom door, ready to throw herself into Yu Xuanji’s warm and fragrant embrace. However, she soon stumbled, stammering: “Wi… Wife, why are you up?”
Yu Xuanji sat by the edge of the bed. The bright flame of the mermaid-tallow candle was burning, her high nose casting a shadow across her profile. She turned her head and met the eyes of Cang Lan, who was creeping back inside: “A-Lan, where did you go?”
Cang Lan’s body stiffened, she stood up straight with both hands behind her back. She shifted her eyes guiltily and said, “I… I went out to throw away the trash.”
