The Amnesiac Drama Queen Is Crashing the Live Stream - Chapter 8
The air froze for a few seconds.
Pei Luoqing felt she was about to be both angered and amused by Xia Xingtang. While Xia Xingtang was generally well-behaved in other aspects, she never held back when it came to spending money.
In their three years of marriage, the closest connection between her and Xia Xingtang was probably the bank accounts linked to their cards.
Yet, despite never having been short of money from her, Xia Xingtang had not only called her “auntie” over Xia Qingyue’s bank card but also questioned her capabilities.
In social circles, Pei Luoqing was often praised first for her wealth, then for her striking appearance.
To be labeled “auntie” by her own wife and then doubted about her financial capacity, even knowing it was due to Xia Xingtang’s amnesia, still stung her pride a little.
The smile on her lips froze; her expression wasn’t exactly grim, but it wasn’t pleasant either.
“Is this really how you see me?”
Just a moment ago, Pei Luoqing had been coaxing her, yet now her attitude had shifted faster than flipping a page.
Xia Xingtang felt a surge of irritation as well.
It wasn’t as if she had chosen to lose her memory. Pei Luoqing could have explained things clearly from the start instead of making her figure it out on her own.
Once her emotions flared up, she couldn’t hold back from criticizing: “You won’t even sit beside me, and now you’re glaring at me with that stern face. Don’t think just because I’ve lost my memory that I’m easy to fool. I’ve been awake for so long, and you didn’t even come to see me. Are you seeing someone else? Should I even compliment you for being in your prime and scoring twice?”
As she spoke, a hint of grievance crept into her voice.
Hearing this, a layer of helplessness slowly settled over Pei Luoqing’s fair and elegant face.
Xia Xingtang was the one making false accusations, yet she acted like the victim.
Pei Luoqing glanced down and saw the other staring back stubbornly, yet with a trace of anticipation in her eyes. Her earlier annoyance vanished instantly.
She patiently explained, “The party at fault in an affair doesn’t get much in the divorce settlement.”
“You what?”
“Would you like some congee? It’ll get cold if you don’t eat soon.” Pei Luoqing’s tone softened again as she picked up the food container she had placed by the bedside earlier.
“Fine.”
Free service, why turn it down?
She patted the spot beside her once more. This time, Pei Luoqing finally sat down.
Xia Xingtang was baffled. Was this a case of the weasel paying New Year’s respects to the chicken?
After all, her spouse clearly wasn’t the type to take losses lightly and always had the upper hand in conversations.
Would she really yield for no reason?
Xia Xingtang reflexively replayed her own words in her mind but couldn’t find anything wrong.
A few seconds later, she watched as Pei Luoqing patiently set up the bed tray and arranged the purchased congee.
As if reading Xia Xingtang’s thoughts, Pei Luoqing handed her the spoon and said leisurely,
“But since I’m older, after I’m gone, you can always take the inheritance and find someone new.”
Her tone was drawn out at the end, almost like a resentful wife.
She passed the spoon over. “I’ve had a change of heart and want to work on improving my standing now. Is that not allowed?”
Xia Xingtang: “…”
Alright then.
She really never missed a chance to angle for benefits.
But… Xia Xingtang liked that.
Hiding a smile at the corner of her mouth, she glanced at the black card that Xia Qingyue had returned and felt she shouldn’t be too stingy either.
She asked, “So, how much allowance did I used to give you?”
Pei Luoqing simply gazed quietly at Xia Xingtang without saying a word.
Xia Xingtang pondered for a moment. Given the level of debt from her investments, she probably didn’t have much spare cash.
She made a conservative guess: “One million?”
Pei Luoqing shook her head. “Too much.”
“Then, ten thousand?”
Pei Luoqing shook her head again.
“Is that too little?”
“Too much.”
Xia Xingtang suddenly felt she was being rather stingy. If even ten thousand was too much for pocket money, her twenty-three-year-old self must have been incredibly tight-fisted.
She immediately decided to increase Pei Luoqing’s allowance.
When Pei Luoqing noticed the pity in Xia Xingtang’s eyes, she found it a bit odd but didn’t show it.
Then, with a swipe of her finger, Xia Xingtang opened her phone, linked her bank card, and like a nouveau riche tycoon who had struck it rich overnight, she generously transferred money to her little lover:
“I’m in a good mood. Consider this ten thousand as your pocket money. If you behave well, I’ll transfer more to you every day.”
Pei Luoqing: “…”
For some reason, Pei Luoqing, who usually dealt in billions at her company, genuinely felt that ten thousand was a fortune at that moment.
Satisfied, Xia Xingtang wore a smug expression, like a little fox that had just stolen something. Her features, reflecting her mood, became vivid and striking, any more would have been overly seductive, any less would have seemed plain.
Xia Qingyue, who had been acting as an invisible bystander, could no longer stand it. She coughed twice, drawing the attention of the two on the bed.
“Sis, you should rest well at your age. Don’t busy yourself with all sorts of things,” Xia Xingtang said with a hint of annoyance, almost outright stating that Xia Qingyue was in the way.
Xia Qingyue picked up her bag to leave. Before Pei Luoqing arrived, she had been Xia Xingtang’s favorite sister. But as soon as Pei Luoqing showed up, she stole all of Xia Xingtang’s attention.
Truly, Pei Luoqing was as cunning as ever, never changing over the years.
Before stepping out, she turned and gestured to Pei Luoqing with a tilt of her chin. “Come with me.”
Xia Xingtang watched Xia Qingyue warily, clutching her bank card with one hand and gripping the hem of Pei Luoqing’s clothes with the other, greedily unwilling to let go of either.
Pei Luoqing gently freed her clothes and explained, “I’m going with your sister to the doctor’s office to get more details about your condition. You should eat your breakfast first.”
Xia Xingtang eyed her suspiciously. “Really?”
“Really.”
“Fine.”
Xia Xingtang watched longingly as the two left the hospital room, and the room fell silent once more.
She stared blankly at the door, biting her lower lip until she felt a sting of pain.
It felt all the more real.
The porridge in the nearby food container was no longer scalding hot.
Xia Xingtang quickly finished her meal in a few minutes and moved the somewhat bothersome dishes back to the bedside table.
The snow-white bed soon held a round, curled-up figure, rolling around in the blanket that smelled of disinfectant.
Soft, pleasant laughter accompanied her movements.
When Pei Luoqing and Xia Qingyue arrived at the attending physician’s office, several doctors were present.
Huanyu had donated two buildings to First People’s Hospital, and over the years, the company had allocated funds annually. The hospital had directly assigned a medical team to treat Xia Xingtang, including renowned brain specialists.
Xia Xingtang had almost no external injuries and no damage to her organs.
Yet, she had hit her head, resulting in memory loss.
For the doctors, even with the most advanced techniques, there was little they could do about it.
After repeatedly confirming that Xia Xingtang had no other complications, Pei Luoqing and Xia Qingyue left the doctor’s office feeling relieved.
Xia Qingyue had to return to work at Huanyu and called out to Pei Luoqing before leaving: “Pei Luoqing, wait a moment.”
Pei Luoqing turned around and asked expressionlessly, “What is it?”
Xia Qingyue scoffed, “How rare. I never thought I’d see the day you’d be asking for pocket money.”
Pei Luoqing retorted, “Indeed, it’s rare. I should thank Miss Xia for her generous contribution.”
Where was the good temper she had shown in front of Xia Xingtang?
Whenever the two of them met, it was almost always like this, if one didn’t throw a jab, the other wouldn’t retaliate, and neither would feel satisfied.
But this time, Xia Xingtang’s sudden car accident and the news of her memory loss had caught them off guard, leaving no time to coordinate their stories.
It was the first time Xia Qingyue realized that Pei Luoqing was not only eloquent in debates but also exceptionally skilled at talking nonsense with a straight face.
The two of them had little to say to each other. After exchanging barbs, they prepared to go their separate ways.
But Pei Luoqing seemed to suddenly remember something. She paused after taking a few steps, turned around, and called out to Xia Qingyue.
“Xia Qingyue.”
Xia Qingyue stopped and turned her head, her face full of impatience. “Aren’t you hurrying back to the room to take care of my sister? Aren’t you afraid your pocket money will be cut off tomorrow?”
Pei Luoqing took two steps forward, playing along with Xia Qingyue’s words: “Although I’m not short of money, Tangtang will still give me pocket money tomorrow.”
Xia Qingyue looked at Pei Luoqing as if she were an idiot. “Are you out of your mind?”
Pei Luoqing reminded her again, “I receive pocket money from my wife every day.”
“What does your wife have to do with me?” The words caught in her throat as the earlier memory resurfaced.
Wasn’t the bank card Xia Xingtang used to give out pocket money provided by her?
What could be more infuriating than seeing the sister she had doted on all her life siding with her archrival?
Xia Qingyue’s face instantly turned ashen.
“Pei Luoqing, don’t tell me Yunji ended up in your hands because it was about to go bankrupt. How can you stoop so low as to squeeze money out of Tangtang? Are you even human?”
“The money isn’t the point; it’s the pocket money that matters.”
It was a novel experience, to say the least.
Xia Qingyue: “…”
She finally understood Pei Luoqing’s intention, to flaunt it in her face.
Xia Qingyue took a deep breath. “I don’t care what game you’re playing, but don’t you dare take advantage of Tangtang’s memory loss to bully her. Otherwise, I’ll take her away at any moment. Do you hear me?”
Pei Luoqing dropped her casual demeanor and became serious. “I’ve already lost her once; I won’t make the same mistake again. Yunji is stable now, and I have both the ability and the time to take care of her. But for her recovery and to avoid upsetting her further, I believe it’s best to follow her lead.”
Xia Qingyue frowned and scrutinized Pei Luoqing carefully before finally nodding. “At Tangtang’s age, her personality can be a bit unpredictable.”
“I know.”
“Sometimes, her temper isn’t the best.”
“That’s fine.”
“She also loves to spend money recklessly.”
“Mm-hmm.”
Logically, Xia Qingyue should have been pleased with Pei Luoqing’s compliance, but her unresisting attitude gave Xia Qingyue the unsettling feeling that a little bunny was about to be snatched away by a sly fox.
Before leaving, Xia Qingyue suddenly brought up, “Since you’re so confident, shouldn’t you show some sincerity?”
Pei Luoqing looked up. “How should I show it?”
Xia Qingyue was astonished: “You have pocket money now, shouldn’t you take the initiative to buy Tangtang a gift?”
“Coincidentally, last week Tangtang mentioned she had her eye on a Kashmir sapphire necklace. How about I leave this opportunity to you?”
Pei Luoying: “…”
In the end, Pei Luoying forwarded the auction catalog sent by Xia Qingyue to her assistant and successfully bid on that sapphire necklace.
However, the amount spent would require her to be kept by Xia Xingtang for over a decade just to break even.
Making her already ‘struggling’ wallet even more depleted.
