- Chapter 8 - The Atmosphere Softens
From the shoulder blades down to the slender waist, all that remained in her line of sight was a waist as supple as a willow branch. Between each breath, the heat in her palm intensified. Jiao Jin swallowed her nervousness, her fingertips slowly sliding over the red welts on the side of the waist.
“Mm…”
The body beneath her trembled violently for a moment, accompanied by an irrepressible low moan that sounded enchantingly seductive.
“Cough, what’s wrong?”
With her head resting on her arms, Cui Yu’s mind had quickly become hazy from the heat. She didn’t know why she couldn’t hold back her voice, she felt as though the atmosphere was leading toward something else entirely. She buried her face into the scented pillow. “It hurts.”
“But there’s a scar here.”
Jiao Jin hesitated for a moment, then wondered why she had started worrying so much about Cui Yu’s feelings. Taking a deep breath, she said, “Endure it for a little while.”
However, despite telling the other to endure, her movements became lighter and lighter, as if she were handling the most precious treasure. Jiao Jin leaned in slightly, using her soft fingertips coated in cool ointment to glide over the whip marks.
“Ugh…”
Had she known, she wouldn’t have said it “hurt.” She hadn’t expected that after the other person lightened their touch, those inexplicable sensations would become even more vivid, to the point where her eyes grew moist from the stimulation. Cui Yu buried her head deeper into the pillow, her breathing suddenly becoming heavy.
“Does it still hurt?”
Distressed, Jiao Jin rubbed the back of her own neck, only now realizing just how hot her hands were. Deciding to let the injury on the waist go, she stood up and clapped her hands. “Put your shirt on. Then, take off your pants. I remember you have an injury on the back of your thigh.”
Take off her pants too?!
Becoming entirely uneasy, her voice sounding muffled, Cui Yu tried to refuse. “I… I can do it myself.”
“Can you see it?”
“I…”
Left with no choice, she made Jiao Jin turn around. She hurried to put on her pajama top and slid her pajama pants down to her knees. After lying face down, Cui Yu hesitated to speak.
“Not ready yet?”
“Ready… I’m ready.”
The moment she answered, she hid her face in the pillow again. There was no movement behind her, but she could feel a burning gaze studying her. Suddenly, her whole body trembled with tension. Cui Yu propped her head up slightly, not daring to look back. “Why… why aren’t you applying the medicine yet?”
Her breathing had grown heavy. Jiao Jin pursed her lower lip, her gaze falling upon a patch of dampness against the pure white.
So, it wasn’t pain?
Perhaps three years was too long, causing her to forget that the side of the waist was Cui Yu’s sensitive spot. In the past, a mere touch from her would elicit breathless moans and a sensation on her fingertips like a biting nip. Inexplicably, Jiao Jin’s face flushed red as well, she could only be thankful that the woman on the bed didn’t dare look back at her.
She hurriedly smeared the ointment on the middle of the thigh. She saw the moisture deepen, and the woman’s body tightened to the point of trembling. Jiao Jin turned her back, feigning composure. “It’s done. Put your pants back on. I’m going to wash my hands.”
It was only when the cold water rushed over her long, slender fingers that she slowly regained her senses. She thought she had completely moved on, yet she hadn’t expected that this woman could still make her breath hitch and her heart race. It was deeply frustrating.
She simply took her pajamas to the bathroom and took a shower, washing away all the chaos. Drying her damp hair, she returned to the bedroom only to find Cui Yu sitting blankly on the bed. Her soft hair cascaded down, and the daze in her eyes was illuminated clearly by the moonlight.
Sitting under the dryer, Jiao Jin leaned tiredly against the wall, asking with feigned indifference, “What are you thinking about?”
“I was thinking…”
The gaze she lifted was soft and delicate, filled with confusion. Cui Yu bit her lower lip and said, “I think… I might like you a little.”
The dryer was efficient, her hair was already dry. As she stood up and ran her fingers through her fluffy, natural hair, Jiao Jin’s hands, hidden in the shadows, trembled slightly. She let out a self-deprecating laugh. “What do you mean ‘might’? And what do you mean by ‘a little’? Cui Yu, you’ve always been quite something, always using these ambiguous words to throw others into a panic. Is it fun for you?”
Cui Yu didn’t understand why she had suddenly lashed out. Although the cold, barbed words weren’t loud, she was still very nervous. She gripped the quilt tightly, her voice strained. “I… I didn’t mean it like that.”
“Then what did you mean?”
“I… I…”
After discovering the abnormality in her own body, she had found it strange. Why would she have a physiological reaction to Jiao Jin?
After thinking it over, there was only one answer, she actually liked this person who gave her a sense of security. But Cui Yu was afraid her affection would be met with loathing, so she used “might” and “a little” to disguise her true heart. But it seemed those two words were the very source of Jiao Jin’s displeasure?
“Weren’t you always so eloquent? Why can’t you say a single word now?”
Hostility surged violently. Thinking of how the old Cui Yu had used a single ambiguous “confession” to make her surrender her defenses, only to walk away without a scratch, Jiao Jin lifted her cold eyes. Her naturally romantic peach-blossom eyes were now filled with frost. The lieutenant, known by everyone as gentle and refined, showed her sharp edges to the only woman who held the key to her vulnerability.
“No, I didn’t mean to play with you. I just… I just feel like I do like you. Just now, when you were applying the medicine… I… I had a reaction…”
Perhaps the fear of loss sparked courage. Cui Yu lowered her head, laying all her thoughts bare before Jiao Jin.
It felt like a punch landing on cotton. All the hostility, displeasure, and resentment lost their momentum. Jiao Jin actually felt a pang of guilt. Looking at the “little white rabbit” whose eyes were red and who looked ready to cry at any moment, her desire to criticize vanished.
Feeling quite awkward, she looked out at the moonlight beyond the floor to ceiling window, her voice sounding a bit stiff. “So you knew that was a ‘reaction’?”
“I only lost my memory, not my common sense.”
“I’m sorry. I just thought of the past and got a bit angry.”
Cui Yu seemed flattered by the apology. She quickly looked up, waving her hands repeatedly. “No, no! It must be because the old me was too much.”
“You really don’t hold back when scolding yourself. You trust me that much?”
“Yes. I think you’re a good person.”
“Is this a ‘Good Person’ card?”
“No, no. I think you are very upright, very gentle, and a careful, considerate Alpha.”
Jiao Jin hadn’t expected a string of compliments. Moreover, the woman said them with sparkling, earnest eyes that left no room to doubt her sincerity. A surge of warmth rose in her heart. Jiao Jin’s throat moved slightly, she increasingly felt that her aggressive behavior just now had been uncalled for.
“We’ve only known each other for a day. How do you know what kind of person I am?”
She walked out to the balcony helplessly, took down the newly bought and washed underwear, and placed it under the dryer. After ensuring Cui Yu had seen it, Jiao Jin got into bed to sleep, only to hear the woman’s soft chuckle.
“It’s okay. I’ll get to know you slowly as we go.”
