- Chapter 12 - A Pregnancy Pulse
The moment those words were uttered, the clamor in the room came to a sudden halt.
Both men turned their heads simultaneously. Song Qing was the first to rush forward, crying out in concern, “Lan Bie, you are awake!”
Lan Bie swayed slightly from the impact of the embrace. He suddenly realized he was no longer in the outskirts of the city. Seeing that his outer robes had been removed, he froze for a moment and asked in confusion, “How did I end up here?”
Song Qing beat the others to the punch. “You tell me! Lan Bie, you truly scared me to death just now. Why would you suddenly faint? You were even carried back by Sheng Yuli!”
“Did that brute Sheng Yuli do something to you?”
“You have an injury on your thigh. I was just about to examine it, but this fellow refused to leave no matter what!”
Hearing this, Sheng Yuli instantly became annoyed. He stepped forward with arms crossed and retorted angrily, “What do you mean by what I did to him? He fainted and fell from his horse on his own. What does that have to do with me?”
“Hey, Lan Bie, tell him yourself. Where exactly did that injury on your leg come from?”
A leg injury? Lan Bie was stunned.
He did not remember being injured.
Under the scrutinizing gazes of the two men, Lan Bie looked down between his legs. His cold expression stiffened, and his face turned deathly pale.
The crimson stain was not large, and it clearly showed no signs of spreading, but it was far too piercing to ignore. Lan Bie truly did not remember ever being wounded. If he were to consider any actual discomfort in his body, he realized clearly that the blood had not come from his leg. It had come from somewhere deep inside his body.
This sensation was somewhat similar to the morning after that event two months ago, yet there were also differences.
Lan Bie was a man of great pride. At this moment, he felt somewhat relieved that Song Qing and Sheng Yuli had been too busy arguing to strip his trousers while he was unconscious. But for him, this kind of matter was truly difficult to speak of.
He looked up with difficulty and saw Sheng Yuli sitting not far away, staring at him intently.
The general had chosen an excellent spot. He could take in the entire embarrassing situation, yet he was positioned so that Lan Bie could not reach out to strike him. His dark eyes were filled with defiance, showing no intention of leaving.
Lan Bie was currently weak. Although he desperately wanted to throw this annoying fellow out, he lacked the strength. He bit his lower lip and hesitated for a long time, eventually deciding that his health was more important.
As for Sheng Yuli? It would not be too late to deal with him once he recovered.
Thinking of this, Lan Bie lightly pressed the hand of Song Qing and whispered, “Zilin, this is not an external injury.”
Song Qing was taken aback. “Not an external injury? Then this blood?”
Lan Bie lowered his eyes, struggling to keep his voice calm. He said slowly, “Perhaps I have accidentally consumed something poisonous. This blood is flowing from inside my body.”
At those words, the face of Song Qing changed instantly. He grabbed the wrist of Lan Bie and pressed down, searching for a pulse while asking anxiously, “Let me see. What kind of thing is so toxic?”
Beside them, Sheng Yuli finally exclaimed in satisfaction, “Ha! See! I told you I did not injure him. Song Qing, do you believe me now?”
But in the next second, the expression of Song Qing froze. He looked stunned and bewildered, with a hint of disbelief.
Lan Bie had already had a premonition. Though his heart was pounding, he was prepared. He let out a soft sigh and asked, “Is it some rare disease, or has the poison already taken deep root?”
“Zilin, you do not need to hide it from me, nor do you need to lie. For these past two months, my throat has felt sour and I have been constantly nauseated. I have suffered from dry heaves and abdominal pain, unable to eat or sleep well. I suspect it was not wild mushrooms, but that someone has plotted against me and poisoned me long ago.”
Lan Bie felt frustrated. His beautiful eyebrows knitted together in resentment. “I simply do not know who possesses such clever means to slip past my attendants and strike me so closely without leaving a single trace.”
“I was too careless.”
“Lan Bie,” Song Qing finally could not hold it back any longer. His handsome face shifted through various expressions. After a long silence, he said with a lump in his throat, “Do you have something you are hiding from me?”
Lan Bie was confused and shook his head. “Of course not. Why ask so suddenly?”
The face of Song Qing grew even grimmer. After a while, he asked again, “Lan Bie, we grew up together. We are as close as brothers. No matter what happens, I would never turn against you. If you have a secret, I will certainly keep it for you and tell no one!”
“So,” Song Qing choked up for a moment, “tell me the truth. Are you a woman?”
Lan Bie was momentarily dumbfounded. Once he realized what was said, he knit his brows in displeasure. “Zilin, are you joking? We grew up together. Do you not know whether I am a man or a woman?”
Song Qing swallowed hard, his voice trembling. “I knew before. Now, perhaps I do not.”
At this, the frown of Lan Bie deepened. Even Sheng Yuli could no longer sit still. He stood up with a start and said impatiently, “You either know or you do not! Hey, Song Qing, you are a grown man. Why are you being so hesitant? If you are not sure, then I am telling you: Lan Bie is obviously a man! Just say what you have to say. Why play games?”
Song Qing stiffened his neck and asked, “How can you be so certain?”
Sheng Yuli replied without thinking, “Of course I am certain! I…”
In the next second, he saw the blade-like gaze of Lan Bie sweep over him. The words he was about to say were instantly swallowed back down. Under the questioning look of Song Qing, he hesitated for a long while before giving up. “Agh, I just know! If you do not believe me, ask him!”
He pointed at Lan Bie.
Lan Bie was speechless.
Suppressing the urge to kill, Lan Bie took a deep breath and finally moved his gaze back to the bewildered Song Qing. He said slowly, “Zilin, I am indeed a man. If you have something to say, just say it directly.”
“This, this,” Song Qing was practically scratching his head off.
How could he possibly say it?
After hesitating for a long time and nearly scratching his ear raw, Song Qing suddenly slapped his knee. As if he had finally made up his mind, he stood tall with a look of determination and walked back to the bed. He grabbed the hand of Lan Bie and said nervously, “Lan Bie, perhaps my medical skills are lacking. But you must stay calm. Do not think I have lost my mind and have me dragged away!”
Lan Bie nodded and said, “Just say it.”
“Exactly, Song Qing. I never noticed you were so wishy-washy before. Just say it. No one will hit you if you are wrong!” Sheng Yuli was also impatient. He walked over and leaned against the bed with his arms crossed to hurry him along.
Lan Bie glared at Sheng Yuli and then turned back to Song Qing, waiting for him to continue.
After a long silence, Song Qing looked up and said with great difficulty, “Lan Bie, you, it seems, you are with child.”
A crack sounded as a piece of wood from the bedframe was snapped off. It was also the sound of the expressions of Lan Bie and Sheng Yuli breaking.
Almost in unison, the two said firmly, “Impossible!”
“How could a man be pregnant?”
Both ears of Song Qing were struck by the shouting at the same time. He could not help but cover his ears and scramble back a few steps. He glared at the shocked Sheng Yuli and yelled, “Sheng Yuli, Lan Bie is pregnant! Why are you so agitated? You!”
As he spoke, Song Qing suddenly froze. His brain whirled like a returning boomerang. He recalled the strange reactions of the two earlier, and he finally realized something.
The expression of Song Qing shattered completely. He pointed at the two of them in disbelief. “You, the two of you?”
Sheng Yuli, who should have been flying into a rage or gloating over the misfortune, was instead rubbing his nose uncomfortably. His earlobes were turning an unnatural shade of red.
As for Lan Bie, who should have immediately refuted the claim or warned him sternly against such a joke, a layer of imperceptible shock and a thin blush appeared on his pale face. His light-colored eyes were lowered, appearing somewhat ashamed and annoyed. Yet, from beginning to end, he did not deny or explain a single word.
Song Qing was suddenly petrified. As if struck by lightning, he thought in a state of collapse, “This world is truly utterly absurd.”
