- Chapter 6 - This Master and Xiao Heng Are Merely Master and Disciple
Ling City was a medium-sized town where all kinds of people mixed. Aside from mortals, many cultivators gathered here as well.
However, unlike Wen Shiqing, who deliberately hid his cultivation to maintain a low profile, many cultivators went out of their way to reveal theirs, trying to show off how different they were from ordinary mortals at every turn.
“Shopkeeper, what kind of trash wine is this? It tastes so bad it makes me want to vomit!”
Wen Shiqing was watching young Xie Yuan eat with a heart full of parental affection when he suddenly heard a crash from a nearby table. A cultivator dressed in an indigo Daoist robe slammed his wine flask onto the table, shattering it. He shouted arrogantly, “I heard that the Fenghe Restaurant in Ling City has good wine. Get out there and buy me a jar right now!”
Wen Shiqing glanced over. He could see through the cultivator’s cultivation level at a single glance. He was at the peak of the Qi Refining Realm, half a step into the Core Formation Realm.
The cultivation levels in this world, from lowest to highest, were the Qi Refining Realm, the Core Formation Realm, the Transformation Realm, the Unity Realm, the Lower Divinity Realm, the Middle Divinity Realm, and the Upper Divinity Realm. The higher one went, the more difficult it became to cultivate.
With Xie Xiao’s talent and his current status in the Transformation Realm, it would probably take him nearly a hundred years, or even longer, if he wanted to reach the Lower Divinity Realm that Wen Shiqing had achieved.
This blue-robed cultivator had a stubbly beard, heavy dark circles under his eyes, and a severe lack of vitality. It was obvious that he had no hope of forming his core, meaning his cultivation would stop right here for the rest of his life. Even so, his cultivation was still enough for him to walk completely unopposed among ordinary mortals.
The shopkeeper approached with a humble bow, trying to make amends. “My apologies, Immortal Master. It was my poor hospitality that displeased you. I will have someone go and buy wine for you immediately.”
The shopkeeper was already used to this. After all, cultivators came with all sorts of temperaments. This person clearly looked like someone he could not afford to offend, so it was better to keep the peace. He pushed the waiter standing beside him. “Hurry over to the Fenghe Restaurant and buy some wine.”
That waiter happened to be the same one who had served Wen Shiqing yesterday. He walked up to the blue-robed cultivator and said, “Customer, the wine from Fenghe Restaurant is limited each day and is very expensive. It costs fifty taels of silver per flask. Do you think…?”
“I drank your disgusting wine and almost vomited! I did not even ask you for compensation, yet now that I am asking you to buy proper wine, you still want money?!” The cultivator glared instantly, releasing his spiritual energy. The force sent the waiter staggering backward, nearly making him land flat on his backside.
The shopkeeper quickly grabbed the waiter and shielded him behind his back. “You fool! Go to the accounting room to get the money! Buy the wine immediately, and do not make the Immortal Master angry again!”
The waiter bit his lip and left. The shopkeeper apologized to the table once more before the matter finally calmed down.
However, Wen Shiqing knew very well that this shopkeeper might not even earn fifty taels of silver in an entire month. As he thought about this, his gaze shifted to Xie Yuan beside him, only to find that the boy had slowed down his eating at some point.
Xie Yuan’s dark eyes were narrowed slightly as he stared at the Daoist. There was none of the obedience he usually showed when they were alone; instead, his gaze looked very cold and sharp. However, the moment Xie Yuan noticed Wen Shiqing looking over, that coldness vanished instantly, as if it had never existed.
Wen Shiqing found the change strange, but he did not dwell on it. Instead, he began to consider how to find an opportunity to teach that cultivator a lesson while helping the shopkeeper out at the same time.
As he was brainstorming, the people at the cultivator’s table spoke up again.
“Hey, have you heard? Xiao Heng from the Wentian Sect has broken through to the Core Formation Realm! He is only fifteen years old! A fifteen-year-old in the Core Formation Realm! That is a whole year earlier than Shen Huan of the Lanyin Sect and Wu Nian of the Ten Thousand Buddhas Sect! He is practically the most brilliant genius in a thousand years!”
“In the Grand Sect Tournament three years from now, it looks like the Wentian Sect will come out on top again. It really makes one green with envy. If we had even half of Xiao Heng’s talent, how could we be stuck in the Qi Refining Realm for our entire lives?”
“What kind of genius is he? The only reason he could grow this fast is because he was raised by Wen Shiqing!” The blue-robed cultivator sneered. “Who does not know that Xiao Heng’s parents were close friends with Wen Shiqing? Wen Shiqing treats him with absolute devotion, wishing he could transfer his entire cultivation to him. The Wentian Sect feeds all its resources to Xiao Heng as well. If I had that kind of treatment, my achievements would probably surpass his!”
Speaking to this point, he seemed to think of something and gave a wretched smile. “Besides, that Wen Shiqing always acts like a pure, lofty flower on a high mountain, keeping his distance from both men and women. Yet, he just happened to accept Xiao Heng as his personal disciple, living with him every single day in that Qinglan Courtyard at the top of the Sword Peak. They look like master and disciple, but in private, who knows if they are actually…”
Before the filthy words could leave his mouth, the blue-robed cultivator let out a miserable scream. He clutched his cheek, which had been pierced clean through by a chopstick. Blood poured continuously from his mouth onto the table, making him howl in pain.
The turn of events happened so quickly that everyone at the table was completely stunned. They looked around, and as expected, their eyes were drawn to the handsome man sitting not far away.
The man wore clothes as white as snow, and his face was cold. He held a half-empty cup of tea in his hand, looking completely relaxed, yet his presence carried an overwhelming pressure.
He spoke, his voice incredibly freezing: “Who knows if they are actually what?”
The entire tavern went dead silent.
The group of cultivators felt as if a mountain were pressing down on them. Under Wen Shiqing’s spiritual pressure, even breathing became extremely difficult.
When people are extremely terrified, their minds actually become the clearest. They understood Wen Shiqing’s question, and taking in his clothing, his bearing, and the absolute suppression of his cultivation, they asked with trembling voices, “You… could you be Daoist Master Wen?”
Having finally found a reason to teach someone a lesson, Wen Shiqing struck a cool pose. He sneered, “It seems you still have some eyes to see.”
He stood up and walked toward their table. This movement frightened the group so much that they backed away repeatedly, immediately blurting out apologies. “Daoist Master Wen, we truly did not mean to gossip about Xiao Heng! And I did not say anything bad about you either! It was him! He was the one who insulted you!”
Their fingers pointed toward the blue-robed cultivator in perfect unison.
The blue-robed cultivator sat on the floor with a mouth full of blood. When he raised his eyes, Wen Shiqing was already standing right in front of him.
“A fool like you thinks he is worthy of being compared to Xiao Heng?”
His spiritual energy materialized, grabbing the cultivator by the neck and slamming him against the wall. The tightening grip clearly displayed his anger.
“Remember this well: this Master and Xiao Heng have only ever been master and disciple from the very beginning. If you dare to slander Xiao Heng or talk nonsense again in the future, I will take your life!”
The blue-robed cultivator was frightened out of his wits, his face turning purple from the lack of air. This overwhelming, suffocating feeling brought him closer to death than he had ever been. He nodded frantically while coughing up blood. “It is all this lowly one’s fault! In the future, this lowly one will never dare to utter a single word about the Daoist Master and the genius Xiao Heng! Please spare my life, Daoist Master!”
Wen Shiqing smiled coldly, waving his hand to send a blast of spiritual energy into the cultivator’s consciousness. He threatened, “Now that this spiritual energy has entered your body, I will know where you are no matter where you go. If you say or do the wrong thing again, you know what the consequences will be.”
The cultivator’s heart trembled, and he nodded in agreement without delay.
Right at that moment, the waiter returned with the wine from Fenghe Restaurant. Seeing the chaotic scene on the first floor, he blinked, unable to react for a moment.
Wen Shiqing looked at him, gave him a small smile, and then spoke to the blue-robed cultivator. “I heard you say earlier that the wine from Fenghe Restaurant is not bad. In that case, let me have this flask.”
After saying that, he reached out to pay the waiter.
The blue-robed cultivator was startled and quickly stepped forward, saying flatteringly, “If the Daoist Master wants to drink wine, how can we let you pay? Please take the wine with you. This lowly one will cover the cost!”
Without hesitation, he pulled out fifty taels of silver and handed it to the waiter. After clutching his bleeding mouth and offering a stream of praises to Wen Shiqing, he turned around and ran off as fast as his legs could carry him.
Wen Shiqing watched his retreating figure and chuckled softly. After receiving such a harsh lesson today in Ling City, combined with the threat of the spiritual energy, this man would probably never dare to commit misdeeds again.
