Chapter 7: The Devoted Stand-in is Coveted (7)
Wen Zhe felt immense pressure from Ye Baihuai’s gaze. He wasn’t sure if it was psychological, but before that explosive confession, he had never paid much attention to Ye Baihuai at such banquets. Now, he couldn’t help but notice him; he constantly felt the other man watching him, and the words Ye Baihuai said to Jiang Han always felt pointed.
Being so blatant, wasn’t he afraid of being discovered…
“I’m going over there to grab something to eat,” Wen Zhe told Jiang Han.
“Mhm, go ahead,” Jiang Han said. He was currently socializing and couldn’t spare much attention for him.
Wen Zhe left immediately, quickly vanishing from Ye Baihuai’s line of sight. He went to the refreshment station and picked up some pastries to eat.
He had only taken two bites when he felt someone standing beside him, seemingly watching him. Wen Zhe turned slightly and locked eyes with a man.
The other man was quite handsome, dressed in flashy designer brands with his chin slightly raised and a hint of arrogance in his eyes. He was sizing Wen Zhe up from head to toe, making Wen Zhe feel very uncomfortable.
“You’re Wen Zhe?” the man asked in an unfriendly tone.
Wen Zhe felt certain he had never met this person. “And you are?”
“You don’t need to know who I am. Just know that I am Su Cheng’s friend, and that’s enough,” the youth said with a haughty expression.
Wen Zhe realized then that this person was here to cause trouble. “Oh.”
“Oh?” The youth was clearly irritated by Wen Zhe’s attitude. “I shouldn’t even have to say it, but you must know. Jiang Han’s first love is Su Cheng. He only sought you out because you look like him.”
The youth stood on the side of the “White Moonlight,” as if standing on the side of the invincible. He looked down on Wen Zhe with a look of disdain.
Wen Zhe calmly took a sip of wine. “And so?”
The youth was fuming at his attitude. “So how do you still have the face to hang around Jiang Han? I’m warning you out of the kindness of my heart, otherwise, it’ll be you who looks bad when Su Cheng comes back.”
Wen Zhe smiled slightly and said, “You should offer your kind warnings to Jiang Han instead. I listen to him.”
“You!” The youth was speechless with rage. He scanned the room and finally located Jiang Han.
Jiang Han seemed to sense an intense gaze. He looked over, and the moment he locked eyes with the youth, a flash of surprise crossed his face. He walked over with a smile. “Lu Yan, when did you return to the country? Why didn’t you say a word?”
Lu Yan didn’t give Jiang Han a friendly face either. “I figure even if I told you, you wouldn’t bother with me. After all, what friendship do we have? We only know each other through Su Cheng. Now that you’ve replaced the person by your side, why would you care about me?”
“Now that you’re back, I’ll certainly host you properly.” Jiang Han’s expression remained unchanged. “How was it abroad? Why the sudden return?”
Lu Yan glanced at him. “I think you really want to ask about Su Cheng.”
“How is he?” Jiang Han asked.
Lu Yan swept a glance at Wen Zhe as if to say, See? The one he cares about most is still Su Cheng. Wen Zhe felt a bit awkward and took a sip of wine as a cover.
Lu Yan sneered. “He’s not like Young Master Jiang, who hasn’t been alone for a single day.” As he spoke, he glanced at Wen Zhe. “I have to say, Jiang Han, your taste is too poor. How can he compare to Su Cheng?”
As the words fell, Wen Zhe’s face began to turn pale, his expression showing embarrassment. He looked at Jiang Han as if for help, but the other man didn’t look at him. The smile had long since vanished from Jiang Han’s face, and the atmosphere around him turned cold.
“Jiang Han, you specifically kept such a person by your side just to disgust Su Cheng on purpose, didn’t you?” Lu Yan’s tone was full of mockery.
Wen Zhe suddenly felt dizzy, and a dense pain rippled through his heart. He had always known that in Jiang Han’s heart he was unpresentable, but hearing it from Lu Yan’s mouth—that he only existed as a means to disgust someone—was unacceptable. A surge of bitterness welled up, making his eyes turn red.
“Excuse me, please excuse me for a moment,” Wen Zhe said.
With that, he turned and walked directly out of the venue. However, at the moment he turned, he locked eyes with Ye Baihuai, who was standing not far away. Embarrassment immediately flashed across his face, making him feel a bit vexed. In Ye Baihuai’s eyes, he probably looked even more pitiful now.
This feeling was even more uncomfortable than when he acted out heartbreaking scenes.
Watching the fleeing Wen Zhe, Lu Yan couldn’t help but laugh. “Weren’t you quite capable just now? Why run away now?”
Jiang Han watched Wen Zhe’s retreating back, somewhat dazed. Those reddened eyes lingered in his mind, making him feel increasingly frustrated.
“Hey,” Lu Yan nudged Jiang Han’s arm. “You’re not really using him to get back at Su Cheng, are you?”
Jiang Han looked at the man in front of him, and that frustration was pushed to its peak. A sharp glint flashed in his eyes. “My business is none of your concern. Back then, Su Cheng left the country without a second thought and stayed away for four years. What? Is there a problem with me finding someone else now?”
Jiang Han’s sudden raised voice startled Lu Yan, and his momentum weakened. “Are you resentful toward him?”
Jiang Han’s chest heaved. Indeed, there had always been a trace of resentment in his heart. But now, it seemed to be gone. He didn’t know when it had disappeared…
Exiting the venue, Wen Zhe felt exceptionally relaxed. He saw a lounge in the hotel corridor and pushed the door open to enter.
He turned on the lights. Inside was a table and a long sofa. On a low shelf next to the sofa were various drinks.
Wen Zhe unscrewed a bottle of water and took a sip, then opened the door and called to a waiter in the corridor. “Please deliver a portion of fried rice to the lounge.”
He had only eaten two bites of cake, and he had exerted too much emotion; now he felt very hungry.
After giving the order, Wen Zhe closed the door and sat comfortably on the sofa. His body relaxed as he leaned back and closed his eyes to nap.
But after resting for barely two minutes, the door handle of the lounge suddenly turned. Wen Zhe opened his eyes, thinking the fried rice was fast.
In the next second, the door opened and Ye Baihuai appeared at the entrance. Wen Zhe’s face flashed with surprise, and he blurted out, “Why did you come over?”
Ye Baihuai closed the door and then naturally sat down beside Wen Zhe. “This is a lounge specially prepared for me by the hotel. It’s not strange for me to come here, is it?”
Wen Zhe opened his lips, wanting to say something but failing to find words. Finally, he just said, “Sorry, I’ll leave then.”
Just as he stood up, his wrist was grabbed by Ye Baihuai, who pulled him back down onto the sofa. “You can rest here. I didn’t say anything.”
Wen Zhe was at a loss for words. He hadn’t said anything, but he was the one who kept saying he wanted to “steal a love away,” and the one he wanted to steal was Wen Zhe himself.
The atmosphere was a bit awkward. Wen Zhe withdrew his wrist from Ye Baihuai’s hand. “Why aren’t you at the venue? Are you tired?”
Ye Baihuai looked at the person beside him. Wen Zhe’s eyelids were lowered, his long eyelashes casting shadows beneath his eyes, making him look somewhat obedient. “I saw you leave, so I followed you out.”
Wen Zhe: “…”
He shouldn’t have asked. As expected, he had followed him.
The atmosphere was silent for a while. Suddenly, Ye Baihuai smiled. “You surprise me a bit.”
Wen Zhe looked up at him. Even though they were both sitting, the tall man beside him was still a head taller. “Surprise?”
A hint of a smile touched Ye Baihuai’s dark eyes. “I thought you would be hiding in the lounge grieving alone, silently licking your wounds like a wounded little beast. I didn’t expect it to be not like that at all. Your whole person is very relaxed.”
Wen Zhe’s heart skipped a beat. Oh no, he had been found out.
“Actually, I’m just used to it,” Wen Zhe said desolately, frantically trying to fix the situation.
As soon as he finished speaking, there was a knock at the door. “Sir, your fried rice is ready.”
Wen Zhe: “!” Before he could stop it, the lounge door was opened, and the waiter brought the fried rice to Wen Zhe…
Wen Zhe subconsciously glanced at Ye Baihuai beside him, only to see him full of smiles. He could only brace himself and accept it. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, sir.”
The waiter left, and Ye Baihuai teased him, “Used to it?”
Wen Zhe simply gave up and naturally scooped up a spoonful of rice. “I’m hungry.”
The aroma of fried rice quickly filled the lounge. After a few bites, Wen Zhe’s stomach finally felt much better. He glanced at the man beside him. “Do you want to eat? I can share some with you.”
Ye Baihuai shook his head. He rubbed his fingertips together, looking at Wen Zhe’s puffed-out cheek. He felt an urge to pinch it.
Wen Zhe ate quietly and elegantly. This couldn’t help but remind Ye Baihuai of the first time he saw him. It was also at a banquet like today’s; Wen Zhe had been scolded by Jiang Han, looking full of sorrow and so pitiful that it made Ye Baihuai want to step forward and pull him into his arms.
But in the blink of an eye, he had seen him in a corner of the resting area. Several kinds of food were placed on his tray, and he was focused on eating.
At that time, just like now, he couldn’t help but smile.
A sorrow that was visible to the naked eye, yet completely vanished in the blink of an eye.
“Do you really like Jiang Han?” Ye Baihuai asked.
Wen Zhe immediately choked. After coughing a few times, he looked at the man beside him. The other’s face was deeply handsome with deep-set eyes; when he looked at a person with focus, it was truly moving. “Of course.”
“Over so much time, I have already cultivated a wall of bronze and iron around myself. I shrink the time I feel sad shorter and shorter, but the degree to which I love him will not change,” Wen Zhe said with a face full of seriousness.
Ye Baihuai’s thin lips pressed together tightly, and he even gave him an angry glare. “Pig-brained!”
Hearing this, Wen Zhe didn’t get angry. Instead, he ate the last bite of rice. If he was angry, it proved he believed it.
Ye Baihuai was indeed angry, his chest heaving visibly. He truly couldn’t stand Wen Zhe’s “toxic” declarations, especially regarding someone else. But he didn’t believe what Wen Zhe said—that sorrow could be shortened. If such an emotion could be regulated so freely, was it truly sorrow?
He really wanted to fuck him to death in bed and see if he could still say words of being head over heels in love then.
Wen Zhe suddenly felt a chill down his spine. He glanced sideways and found Ye Baihuai looking at him with a fierce and sharp gaze, making his heart tighten.
Fortunately, he had finished the fried rice. He placed the plate on the table and stood up to leave. “I have to go out.”
Ye Baihuai’s face was tense as he stood up and smoothed his clothes. “I’m going out too.”
Wen Zhe ignored him, but just as he opened the door, a figure in the corridor caught his eye. Jiang Han was looking for something and was about to see him, which made him close the door again by reflex.
Ye Baihuai, who was walking out, pressed right up against him. Wen Zhe turned and placed his hand on the man’s chest to push him back. “Wait a moment, Jiang Han is outside.”
Ye Baihuai took the opportunity to wrap his arms around Wen Zhe’s waist. The two were extremely close, their breaths mingling on each other’s faces. At this moment, Ye Baihuai looked very dissatisfied. “What? Are you that afraid of him seeing?”
Wen Zhe also realized their current ambiguity, but in order to keep Ye Baihuai quiet, he decided to stabilize him first. “Avoiding suspicion…”
Ye Baihuai’s arms gradually tightened, his lips nearing Wen Zhe’s ear. “Do you know what we look like right now?”
Wen Zhe’s nose was full of Ye Baihuai’s scent, and his ear tingled from the vibration. His eyelashes fluttered as he looked up in confusion. “What?”
Ye Baihuai smiled, his lips almost kissing Wen Zhe’s ear. “Having an affair.”
