- Chapter 73 - The Mysterious Secret
Uncle Ji Ershu, for the first time, seriously assessed the two girls opposite him.
No matter the era, women always seem to be the weaker party. Especially in this post-apocalyptic world, the number of female ability awakeners is far lower than that of males. Consequently, in the eyes of many, women without abilities are at the very bottom of the food chain.
And that is why they hadn’t paid much attention to these two girls in the beginning—when they passed the survival base’s entrance inspection, no abilities were detected from either of them.
But who could have imagined that precisely these two girls, whom they had overlooked, would defeat all the elites Uncle Ji Ershu had brought?
“What kind of energy is this?” Uncle Ji Ershu murmured softly. “I’ve never seen it before.”
There are many ability awakeners in the base, and all sorts of abilities are registered. But never has there been an energy that could be equated with what Jizhou just displayed.
The Ji family members behind him seemed unconvinced, stumbling to their feet and preparing to rush forward again.
Uncle Ji Ershu raised his hand, stopping their movement.
He saw clearly that the girl with the mysterious power was obviously led by the other girl. Even Ji Man subconsciously stood behind that person. Among the three, You Ting, in the center, clearly held the highest authority.
He scanned his gaze around, finally meeting You Ting’s eyes.
Even with Uncle Ji Ershu’s extensive experience in judging people, it was difficult to see through what the young girl in front of him was thinking. Her deep, ink-like eyes seemed to contain the whole world, yet also appeared utterly vacant.
After a silent standoff for a while, Uncle Ji Ershu chose to compromise: “Fine, let’s talk.”
The opponent was too mysterious, and he didn’t know what other trump cards they might have. Rather than confronting a powerful enemy, it was better to understand what they wanted. If possible, turning a hostile situation into friendship would naturally be the best outcome.
In Ji Man’s room, Uncle Ji Ershu stood on one side, and You Ting and the others stood on the other. The room was not large, so they were not far apart. Yet, those few steps felt like a vast divide, clearly separating them.
Uncle Ji Ershu narrowed his eyes. He stood in the shadows, like the slowly setting sun, exuding a decadent and aged aura.
The three people opposite him were still very young. Their youthful faces were even more striking under the illumination of the light.
Uncle Ji Ershu shifted his gaze, looking directly at You Ting: “May I ask, Miss, what exactly do you wish to discuss with me?”
You Ting replied, “Naturally, it is about Ji Man’s affairs.”
Her gaze was calm as she looked at Uncle Ji Ershu, and she slowly began, “Your Ji family should not confine him, nor should you treat him as an experimental tool.”
Uncle Ji Ershu’s brow twitched.
“Miss,” he said, his tone sinking, “this is a family matter of ours; you don’t seem to have the right to comment.”
“The right?”
You Ting smiled, but the warmth did not reach her eyes.
“If we are to talk about the right, I believe your Ji family are the ones who are least qualified.”
Uncle Ji Ershu was about to speak again, but then he heard the girl opposite him say softly, word by word: “For instance, the ‘thing’ locked up in the underground restricted area—who exactly provoked it?”
Uncle Ji Ershu’s pupils shrank abruptly.
This decisive and always calm head of the family couldn’t help but tremble slightly at this moment. He stared at You Ting, a chilling feeling rising up his back, momentarily forgetting how to speak.
“Sis, what are you guys talking about?” Ji Man, completely confused, rubbed the back of his head and asked, puzzled.
Before You Ting could speak, Uncle Ji Ershu roared, “Get out! Get out!”
Ji Man was startled. He looked up and saw that Uncle Ji Ershu’s face was very strange. It was an Uncle Ji Ershu he had never seen before. It seemed like the ashen color of extreme fury, yet perhaps mixed with a hint of… fear?
Before Ji Man could think too deeply, his head was patted.
You Ting told him and Jizhou, “You two go out first. It seems the Ji family head only wants to talk to me alone about some things.”
It clearly wasn’t a small matter, perhaps related to the repeated blood draws he had to endure since childhood. Ji Man wisely chose to comply and, without pressing for answers, pulled Jizhou, ready to walk out the door.
But he couldn’t pull her.
Jizhou stood still, stubbornly looking at You Ting. Her eyes blinked, her clear, spring-like pupils filled with worry.
You Ting smiled slightly at her and gently reassured her, “I’ll be fine.”
The young girl merely blinked, unconvinced.
You Ting thought for a moment and reached out her hand to Jizhou. She hooked her pinky finger around Jizhou’s, shaking it very lightly.
“Let’s pinky swear,” You Ting said.
Feeling the slight pull transmitted through her finger joint, Jizhou paused before nodding.
“Sister Ting, I’ll be waiting for you outside.”
“If…” She quickly glanced at Uncle Ji Ershu and lowered her voice, “If anything happens, just call my name, and I’ll come to save you!”
The young girl clenched her fist, her words carrying a touch of innate childishness, clumsy yet sincere.
You Ting smiled and stroked her head, nodding in agreement, “Okay.”
“Hey, hey—” Ji Man rolled his eyes rather ungracefully. “I’m telling you, can you two stop imagining my second uncle to be that bad?”
“Even though he hit me, scolded me, and locked me up, he’s a good person.”
Uncle Ji Ershu: “…”
“Alright,” You Ting gave Jizhou a final comforting look. “Go out with Ji Man first.”
Jizhou released You Ting’s hand and followed behind Ji Man, looking back at You Ting with every step until she walked out the door.
Ji Man couldn’t bear it and pulled her to hasten their steps: “Little Bean Sprout, don’t look so heartbroken, as if my second uncle would do something to Sister Ting.”
“With Sister Ting’s strength, what is there for you to worry about?”
He “tsk-ed” and then said, “Besides, my second uncle…”
Ji Man paused, seemingly organizing his thoughts, and only after a while did he say, “Although he looks old-fashioned and boring, standing there like a villain. But honestly, he’s really not a bad person, and it’s even less likely he’d lay a hand on a young girl.”
He chattered on for a long time, but didn’t hear a response from Jizhou.
“Say something, Little Bean Sprout, don’t leave me here awkwardly doing a solo performance.”
Jizhou finally diverted a trace of her attention to him, turning her head to ask, “Brother Ji Man, do you care a lot about your family?”
Ji Man was taken aback. Family…
“Although you always speak in a very dismissive way,” Jizhou said softly, “I saw you subconsciously step forward when I sent those people away.”
“The way you looked at that Uncle Ji, there was worry in your eyes.”
Ji Man heavily pursed his lips, reaching out to turn Jizhou’s head in the other direction: “You should stop talking.”
Inside the room, where the two outside could not hear, You Ting and Uncle Ji Ershu looked at each other for a long time before Uncle Ji Ershu broke the silence: “Tell me, what do you know, and how do you know it.”
He showed no expression on his face, making it impossible to discern his current emotions. His gaze was deep, carrying the suppressive weight of someone who had held a high position for many years, scrutinizing the young girl before him.
Yet, unseen beneath his sleeve, his fingers were tightly clenched into a fist out of nervousness.
The secret about the ‘thing’ in the forbidden area was only known to the high-ranking members of the Ji family. Even Ji Man was unaware.
But why could this stranger, whom he had only met once, speak of it in a single sentence?
