- Chapter 57.1 - The Apocalypse Has Arrived
It was the last day of the human civilization era.
The sky was stained with large swathes of red sunset clouds, like shocking, bloody color.
Within the clouds, a golden eye was faintly visible, replacing the sun’s presence.
It calmly, indifferently, and without sorrow or joy, watched the ground—the whole of humanity fleeing in panic.
The clear black and white of its pupil reflected the inverted image of the entire world.
It closed its eyelid.
Night suddenly fell.
Amidst the screams rising and falling, the era codenamed “Chasing the Sun” officially began.
…
…
Water droplets fell onto the moss-covered stone, producing a trickling sound.
You Ting opened her eyes, and a desolate emptiness filled the entire world.
The sky was like a dust-covered piece of glass, hazy, with the faint shape of an eye visible behind the clouds.
There was no sun, no moon, making it impossible to tell what time it was.
She lay on the ground, able to feel the outline of the stones pressing into the skin of her back.
The sound of dripping water in her ear seemed to be amplified countless times, as if with a built-in sound booster, even allowing her to hear the tiny differences between each drop.
You Ting tried to move her fingers; they were a bit stiff, perhaps from not having moved for too long.
She pushed herself up from the ground, and her vision suddenly broadened considerably.
Then, she was confronted with a rotting face.
Half of the face was melting and drooping downwards like an overripe fruit peel, and an unknown liquid dripped down the crevices on its face.
Blood-red and whitish flesh was exposed and churning, and a foul, putrid smell drifted in the air.
“Patter.” A clear sound.
You Ting suddenly realized that the dripping sound she had just heard came from this.
The other party’s face, which was already unidentifiable, suddenly moved closer to her.
A pair of protruding eyeballs stared intently at You Ting.
It was so close that You Ting could even clearly see the maggots crawling on the bloody flesh.
“Get lost,” she said expressionlessly.
“Otherwise, I’ll kill you.”
You Ting spoke somewhat slowly, as if she wasn’t used to the act.
This was a chaotic era.
A few months ago, a giant golden eye suddenly appeared in the sky.
Like a cold, indifferent deity, it bestowed not a blessing, but a curse.
Many corpses in grotesque forms suddenly emerged from the ground.
Yes, bodies that should have been dead seemed to have “come back to life.”
Their initial movements were extremely stiff, like a toddler learning to walk.
Whenever the eye in the sky closed, they would freeze, as if a stasis spell had been cast on them, unable to move.
But as the golden eye stayed open for longer and longer, their abilities grew stronger.
Science fiction became reality, and true zombies walked the streets.
They already belonged to another species.
Wantonly tearing at humans, their physical strength was more terrifying than the hardest carbon rock.
And the most terrifying thing was that people bitten or killed by them would also become infected and turn into new zombies.
From being monsters that initially only knew how to injure people, they had now begun to develop tiny sparks of intelligence.
Humans classified the zombies into different levels based on the intelligence and abilities they possessed.
Red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, purple.
The one in front of You Ting now was a Blue-level, ranked second to last.
Compared to Purple-level, it possessed a mere speck of intelligence, equivalent to a two-year-old human child.
When this zombie saw her looking at it, it seemed startled and staggered back a couple of steps.
The already precarious flesh on its face finally couldn’t bear the weight and fell heavily onto the stone.
You Ting frowned slightly, as if she had heard an unbearable noise, and glanced at it.
It backed away again.
Although its body was already a mass of bloody, rotting flesh, a sense of fear could still be discerned from it.
You Ting’s gaze fixed on the zombie’s chest.
Rotten muscle encased a blue, rhombus-shaped stone; this was the basis for humans’ classification.
They called it—Source Stone.
This was the source of the zombie’s energy, and also its fatal weakness.
Destroying the Source Stone meant completely ending the zombie’s life force.
Survival of the fittest, evolution theory also applied to this twisted era.
During the long struggle against the zombies, a portion of the human population awakened to the existence of supernatural abilities.
Such people were called Awakened.
You Ting was still sorting through her memories of this world.
The zombie suddenly let out a muffled “hiss-hiss” sound from its throat, like a leaky drainpipe.
Miraculously, she could actually understand it, and the sound automatically translated into a thought in her mind:
“Hungry! Hungry!”
“Human! Human!”
You Ting raised her eyes and gave it a cold look, and it immediately and stiffly lowered its decaying head very slowly.
She withdrew her gaze, then lowered her long eyelashes to look at herself.
There was no sign of decay on her body; it was immaculate, and she looked like a perfectly normal human.
But on her chest, there was a pure white, flawless crystal stone, fused with the surrounding skin, emitting a faint glow.
That was… a Source Stone beyond human comprehension.
You Ting raised an eyebrow with interest, closed her eyes, and with a thought, immediately sensed the presence of all the zombies scattered around.
If she wanted to, she could even lock onto a specific one and gain information through its senses.
In other words, they were like mobile cameras.
As long as You Ting wished, she could see the footage they recorded.
There were also inescapable hierarchical classes among zombies, and she, startlingly, belonged to the very top of the pyramid.
A Zombie King, naturally suppressing all other zombies.
The name wasn’t pleasant; You Ting preferred another name given by humans—”X.”
The X representing everything unknown and mysterious.
Aside from her voice being a little strained and awkward, she looked completely no different from a normal human.
She was even wearing a clean and crisp set of clothes: a loose gray T-shirt on top, and military-green cargo pants covering her long legs.
On her feet were a pair of sturdy, polished black combat boots, reflecting a neatness that was incompatible with the surrounding environment.
It seemed the system was quite good to her.
The feeling of not being human… was quite interesting.
You Ting focused her mind, and the white Source Stone on her chest slowly retracted its glow, blending perfectly with her snow-white skin, barely visible upon a casual glance.
The zombie over there tilted its head, and the viscous brain matter flowed in a different direction.
From its tattered face, You Ting could discern a hint of confusion.
“Walk,” she raised an eyebrow, transmitting her intention directly to the zombie through the Source Stone, “I’m taking you to eat.”
You Ting stood up from the ground and brushed off the dust on her clothes.
The former bustling city center was now buried by yellow sand, devoid of any greenery.
The streets were full of abandoned buildings and vehicles, and from the dry, mottled bloodstains, it wasn’t hard to imagine the horrors that had once occurred there.
She looked in one direction, a slight smile on her lips, and strode towards it.
The ‘eating’ zombie wobbled and followed behind her.
You Ting walked a few steps, then suddenly stopped.
Her brow was tightly furrowed, as if making an extremely difficult decision.
A moment later, she rubbed some of the turbid, unknown liquid from the ‘eating’ zombie onto her overly clean clothes.
You Ting looked at her reflection in a broken glass door by the roadside, and, quite satisfied, relaxed her brows.
Having done this, she now looked more like a human struggling to survive in the apocalypse…
A human.
The street was deserted, the air filled with dust and fog, greatly reducing visibility.
The surroundings were extremely quiet; only the ‘eating’ zombie’s shuffling footsteps, creating a “shh-shh” sound as it dragged its feet on the ground, could be heard.
Finally.
You Ting stopped in front of a ruined, collapsed building.
This should have once been a bustling department store, but the building was heavily slanted, with only parts of the ground floor relatively intact.
Her gaze fell on the sign on the ground; the initial words were illegible, but the last few characters, “convenience store,” could still be faintly made out.
In the apocalypse, a place like a supermarket was naturally a vital resource point that must be fought over.
You Ting’s ears twitched.
Before she even entered, the commotion inside clearly reached her ears.
A coarse male voice and a weeping woman.
You Ting motioned for the ‘eating’ zombie to follow her, and pushed aside some debris to find an entrance and walk inside.
Without electricity, the visibility inside was very poor, completely dark.
But for You Ting, this was no issue; her five senses were far more acute than those of humans.
She found an aisle of shelves and successfully felt around for a fruit knife.
The sound of her combat boots on the floor, combined with the undisguised noise made by the ‘eating’ zombie, finally alerted the small group that had occupied the convenience store.
The leading man was large like a bear, with a pair of fierce inverted triangular eyes, and a long scar on his face, adding to his menacing appearance.
Several other people stood beside him, seemingly obedient to his every command.
In front of the scarred man was a woman sobbing, her face full of despair as she clutched her half-torn clothes.
“We’re so lucky today, to find a supermarket that hasn’t been looted yet, and a woman!”
The scarred man licked his lips and said condescendingly, “Once I’ve had my fill, I’ll reward this woman to you all. If you don’t play her to death, then take her with you; if you do, just dump her on the side of the road.”
The others exposed lewd smiles and repeatedly thanked him, “Thank you, Big Brother! Our brothers haven’t had a taste of ‘meat’ in a long time!”
They had done this more than once or twice.
Suddenly, unfamiliar footsteps approached from far away.
The scarred man looked impatiently interrupted, pulled up his pants, and cursed, “F*ck, which bastard dares to ruin my fun? I’ll chop him to death!”
He kicked the woman aside and led his subordinates rushing out from behind the shelves.
The convenience store wasn’t large, and the unfamiliar movement sounded very close.
But at a certain moment, it vanished completely, quiet as if it were a hallucination.
The scarred man frowned. He raised his hand, and a fist-sized ball of flame rose into the air.
Evidently, he was a fire-element Awakened—which was why the others were all submissive to him.
The firelight illuminated the field of view, and he heard a fearful shout from a subordinate: “B-Big Brother! B-behind!”
A sudden chill rose up his spine, and a putrid stench of decay wafted over.
